Definitely come before or after lunch rush. There's not a great amount of seating; about 6-7 tables and it shares a space with a matcha spot and a small Taiwanese goods store? Their service was kind, but their system to keep track of orders and tables seemed a bit hectic. Seems like they write down orders on paper to send to the kitchen there was a steady flow of customers coming in to order or inquire about lunch. Our table's order got mixed up with another so it took awhile for my friends to get their order while mine came out fairly quickly... I think I also took someone else's order but we had the same dish. I recommend labeling the table numbers so they can keep better track. I got the braised tofu and omg I love it all, great flavor in all the parts of the dish! Came with a variety of veggies and pickled cucumber. The tofu was a so flavorful and for being a vegetarian spot, I couldn't tell there wasn't any meat!! Definitely will be coming back :)

Came here on a Saturday at lunch time. A few tables were already taken, but we didn't have to wait for a spot. The waitress came quickly to take our orders but we weren't ready yet so she came a few minutes later. They have two sections of the menu: vegan and vegetarian (ovo-lacto vegetarian). Both have rice and noodle dishes. I got the braised mung bean noodles under the vegan section and my friend got the vegetarian eel rice under the vegetarian section. The eel rice came out a lot quicker than the noodles. Both the rice and noodles came with some seasoned edamame on the side. The braised noodles had carrots, daikon, shiitake mushroom, cabbage and fried tofu skin (though not crispy since it's already in the soup). The flavor was more subtle than the bright red color would suggest, and tasted savory-sweet from the vegetables. It's quite a big portion! The eel rice came with bokchoy, pumpkin and some salad. We also got drinks from the Orange Tabby cafe, but you have to order it from the counter and pick it up yourself. Although, you can see the counter from all the seats, so you won't miss your order. There's some pop music playing, but it was quiet enough where you can hold a conversation. The cafe is located inside a vegetarian focused supermarket, which is inside a plaza so there's also plenty of parking. Would definitely come back to check out the other dishes!

Birthday lunch here with my mostly vegetarian Taiwanese mother (who does not cook with salt or oil, and wants everything as organic and natural as possible - like to the point that she never let us wear non-cotton clothing growing up). Everything was well/-prepared and satisfying! My mother only complained a little bit that her Three Cup Oyster Mushroom had been prepared with too much flavor (she does not like any kind of sauce or seasoning). The women running the cafe were very patient with her and answered all of her questions about the food preparation and assured her that there would be vegetarian side dishes. Overall, a win. Afterwards, we browsed the adjoining grocery store's offerings, and she read all the ingredient lists on the packaging to her heart's content. If you have someone in your life who buys $22 organic soy sauce instead of the Kikkoman like me, and insists on scent-free natural detergent, this is the place for you.

This place is so sweet and endearing- service is great, from the orange tabby drink bar across the room and the ladies at the front for joyheart's food. All the food here is vegetarian or vegan, and delicious- super light, but still well seasoned food that doesn't leave you feeling bloated. The drinks are also amazing, would recommend the hojicha and tabby lattes. Everything feels like it's made with care and you feel at home- 10/10 would recommend for a healthy food break

Despite walking in 15 minutes prior to closing I received a warm service and the eel, oh wow the eel, was amazing! Highly recommend - since I already consume some plant-based "meat" products I couldn't tell any difference but the presentation is beautiful and appears very healthy. Of course, I recommend looking around the grocery shop before/ afterwards.

Nice clean balanced food. My mom is a super picky vegan and this meet all her requirements - vegan, no onions/garlic. Service was good, attentive enough but not too attentive. All the dishes are below. Love the side of pickle veggies. My noodles were very flavorful along with the vegan minced proteins so the bland veggies balanced the flavors well. Food had good flavors. Couldn't ask for more. Also has clean restrooms. I will be back to try more things. I really enjoy it and see why people have it such a good rating.

If you're into vegetarian food, this is a nice little spot only open for a few hours during lunch. The food here is amazing. We tried at Eel Rice and fried Chicken rice plates. All plates come with some vegetable sides. Service in here is decent, I believe it's mostly volunteers from what I've heard.

Growing up I've always gone to the temple once in awhile with my family and was able to try the wide variety of vegetarian dishes that were available. My mom also cooked up some dishes at home as well! This was my first time trying different vegetarian dishes as I've always been used to the Vietnamese cuisine. What we ordered: Japanese Style Eel Rice: 4/5 Right off the bat, this dish looked almost exactly like freshly grilled eel. It was mind-blowing. I also absolutely enjoy bok choy and was so glad that it came with it as well as some stir fried bean sprouts (just like my mom makes)! The "eel" itself was very meaty and flavorful, however, it had a slight sour taste to it. I enjoyed this dish nonetheless. Three Cup Chicken: 4.6/5 The "chicken" looked like sweet and sour chicken from Chinese takeout which was so cool. The texture was quite similar to the "eel" as well. I enjoyed the seasoning and glaze on this much more! I would order this again.

Enjoyed the food very much. We also got the matcha next to it. Also very excellent. Parking is excellent. Will come again for other in the menu. I do recommend this place

Very cute little Taiwanese cafe hidden away in a plaza. They have an entirely vegan and vegetarian menu! My favorite is definitely their Japanese-Style Eel Rice. I have never seen such a place have vegetarian eel, so I was very curious! The texture is very different than your typical unagi, but the flavor is definitely there. I highly recommend trying it at least once! KEEP IN MIND: The imitation eel is coated in egg, so it's not vegan. I also tried the Minced Pork Noodles, which were a HUGE portion and had lots of seasoning (so flavorful!!!)... but I must say, it was VERY OILY and did not taste anything like minced pork unfortunately. Definitely tasted like a five-spiced tofu stir fry. Still very delicious, just not what I expected.

Joyheart Cafe has really taken a piece of my heart. They are a vegetarian/vegan cafe that shares its roof with a grocery store. I don't know of many other Taiwanese vegan restaurants so I was excited to come and explore what dishes they would offer. I came here in search of a dish to take home to honor my brother who was vegan at the time of his passing. Since 2020, I've gone plant based and enjoy treating myself every now and then with vegan restaurant food. I'm also now posting this review on my own birthday. I'm also now posting this review on my own birthday. As I was browsing their menu from afar, there was one dish that caught my eye immediately: Japanese Style Vegan Unagi (Eel) ($12). I had to take a second glance and make sure that was correct... vegan. eel? The pictures looked great and I knew then and there that I had to get it for myself. I tried calling but nobody picked up the order so we decided to drive there anyways. Fortunately they were open. Damn. This vegan unagi was BOMB. It looked like unagi. It tasted like unagi. It felt like unagi. We took it home where we cooked up some brown rice and veggies to go along, and our meal was amazing. I'm not sure what type of meat substitute was used - perhaps some type of soy. But the way it was cooked up with their sauce made for an amazing dish, and a fraction of what 'real' unagi would typically cost at a restaurant. Needless to say, I was so happy we stopped by and I look forward to returning again. As of February 2021, they're only open from 11:00 - 14:00 on most days and unfortunately do not offer any of their vegan baked goods. I hope that they are able to sustain themselves through this pandemic and will hopefully have these options return as I'd love to try them one day.

One of our fav veg restaurants. Not many items on the menu, but we like whatever we ordered. Yes, a little oily, but the combination of the rice and veggie is very satisfying. We don't go very often as it only opens during lunch (11-2) M-Sat. I wish they would offer vegan options for some of the vegetarian dishes, such as the eel and 3 cups chicken.

The Chinese sausage pieces sprinkled throughout added extra flavor too. The bowl is deep so there seemed to be roughly 5 cups of rice. Unfortunately the laksa shrimp fried rice was disappointing in comparison. It didn't have much flavor overall - better than plain rice but definitely needed more seasoning. The menu lists homemade laksa sauce as an ingredient but we didn't taste that, and the dish wasn't spicy at all either despite the 1 chili pepper rating. But it looked just like the menu picture so maybe the description is wrong. Fried chicken with tom yum sauce came with 6 pieces. Very juicy. We also enjoyed the herbal roasted prime steak with sausage rice. The delicious rice had the taste of fish sauce. Most of the short rib slices were soft and a few were slightly chewy but overall decent quality. Some of the fattier pieces of meat were still attached to the bone.

I came here on a Friday evening with my friend to grab dinner around 6:00 PM. The wait was around an hour, so be very prepared if you're coming during the dinner rush. This spot is located where the majority of the Asian restaurants are in Milpitas, so it's safe to say the parking can get a bit hectic and intense. The interior of the place is very bright, modern, and clean. There is a lot of seating for a small space, but the reason they are so busy has a lot to do with the number of people wanting to check this spot out. When you sit down, you scan their virtual menu via QR code and order there instead of through a server. You have the choice to order on one phone as a group or separately. Between my friend and me, we ordered a beef mint salad, fried tofu, confit mushrooms, and truffle mushroom rice. I will say that when we first got the fried tofu and confit mushrooms, we were quite surprised by the small portions compared to the price. That said, they were delicious, but skippable if you're trying to find the best bang for your buck. What I absolutely would recommend is their truffle mushroom fried rice. This might have been my best bite this month. It was so savory, the mushrooms hit perfectly, and the coating of butter on the rice was supreme. It was $28 for a bowl, but it was a good value to split between two people. Overall, this place had great, fast service (our food came out in under 10 minutes), a nice ambiance, and fresh, flavorful food.
