This restaurant is not close. It's actually been bought over and reopened under a new name which is cornerstone's pub and they also have one in CarverI believe. So we're here. The food is just as good as before of course we missed the regular people, but the bartender is so in our service the same what so we ordered the garlic bread with the cheese the onion rings and the clam chowder everything is exactly the same. The only difference is that the drinks are not as strong as before they're on the right side we knew that was gonna happen with New Orleans we've also wore the pastrami pizza so we'll see how that comes out. Our first time at VEL'S. Drove 45 minutes on a beautiful spring day to have lunch here and it did not disappoint! The clam chowder was piping hot and yummy. His fishermen's platter was huge, plentiful, deliciously FRESH! My stuffed sole was good. If was on the luncheon special menu and it was just the right amount of food. We took some of the platter home to reheat in our air fryer. All in all it was worth the drive. Our server Casey was spot on checking in with us just enough times to be sure we did not need anything else. Great little place with some really good food! read more

Haven't been here in years and decided to stop in for some lunch. It's open seating and the booths are comfy and the atmosphere is definitely old school which I like. Our waitress was really nice and we started with some mozzarella sticks and they were nice and crispy with a great sauce. My wife ordered the lasagna with a salad and I can say that they definitely do not skimp on the portions! I ordered a pepperoni pizza and a meatball sub and I can say that they were incredibly tasty. I can't wait to go back and try the seafood as it looked incredible as well. If you are in the area and don't mind an old school atmosphere stop in and give it a try. read more

Delicious bread bowl! I had to option of either clam chowder, lobster bisque or soup of the day (I didn't ask what that was). I had already had the lobster bisque at a previous visit, which was very good, and wanted to try the clam chowder. It was very good, the bits of clams could have been a bit bigger and more of them, but other then that, definitely would order again. It also came with a side order of garden fresh salad. The service was good, waitress was prompt and made sure our food was delivered promptly. The place was very busy. The waitress was pleasant yet looked frazzled. First issue was no utensils or napkins. The next issue was lengthy wait for food which nothing like previous times. First time here and felt very comfortable like in Cheers where everyone knows your name. Waitress, "Shorty" provided great service and was so nice. Enjoyed conversations with customer Kathy and everyone she politely introduced me to. Ate meal there and I was surprised at how delicious it was because I'm pretty picky. Everything was fresh and cooked just right. I took an order to go of the seafood special over linguini and my husband who is Italian and from north end of Boston thought it was great. TERRIBLE!!!! walk in for a business lunch on 6-28-23 at 12:05, I asked a miserable heavy set waitress with giant black bags under her eyes if I could sit on the left section of the restaurant because it's quieter, rudely and loudly she said "how many people " I responded at the same volume, she said I don't need to be rude and I walk pass her to sit and she told me to get out and they would not serve us. It's a diner and lounge in the most traditional New England sense. Some would describe this as a whole in the wall, others would say its a place for townies, but I think if you peel back the surface you find that they take a very large, eclectic menu and make it very tasty. The dishes I had were all well prepared, the service was friendly, and the lunch was very reasonably priced. The portions are large as you would expect from this type of diner but it did not take away from the quality. I will go back many more times! read more

Visited Vel's for lunch and sat at the bar. We ordered sodas and lunch. Chicken Parm sub was delicious and roast beef club was also delicious. The service on the other hand was awful. The bartender was inattentive at best and had a bit of an attitude as well that we observed of other customers interactions. First off our waitress was so kind she even heated up my baby's bottle lol the stuffed shells...OMG! It was like a comfort food! Our food came out fast to. I ordered the Alfredo dish and I'd give it a solid 7.5 the chicken was missing some flavor and I like my broccoli with a little more buttery taste but to each it's own. I ate my husbands stuffed shells because it was like the best I've had lol the rest of my family enjoyed their good. The setting is pretty laid back, casual, comfy. Ambiance: Had never been but was told the food was good. Arrived on a Friday night around 6:30pm. Was seated within 10 minutes in the far dining room. The dining room was packed. The decor has a plain 1970s paneled basement feel. The tables that were available were against the far wall - seating for 6 consisting of a table for 4 that sat against the far outside wall, plus a table for 2 sandwiched against it. There were 4 of those setups that sat empty. One of those tables hadn't been cleared and had large serving trays stacked on them. The table where we were sat was a table for 4 against the wall. The host pulled the table for 2 about 6" away from our table to separate them. That table for 2 also had serving trays stacked on them. My chair back was about a foot from the chair back of the people behind me. There we sat, my wife and I at a table for 4 with that 2 person table they moved 6" stacked with serving trays. Service: We waited at our table, against the wall with the serving trays stacked on the little 2 person table 6" away. Nobody bothered to come to our table for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of nothing but listening to the customers sitting just a foot behind me, we saw that same host leading a party of 2 into the dining room and pointing to the tables in our area. The serving trays were still on the little table 6" from our table end and the other table that hadn't been cleared when we cane in was still sitting there not cleared with glasses and serving trays on them. Because the staff hadn't cleaned off that other table, they came over and took the serving trays off the little table beside us and seated the couple 6" to my right. At that point, the lack of service and the absurdity of seating another couple 6" off our table, we'd had enough of Vel's and their service. The food: I can't tell you how the food was because we couldn't get any service during the 20 minutes we sat there. The bottom line is I was a little put off by how the place looked when I went in. Very dated. My wife had heard the food was good so we stuck around. The fact that this staff left tables uncleared, and packed the patrons in so tight, you would have to crawl over the next person to go to the bathroom was a huge turn off. Combine that with leaving your customers sitting surrounded by serving trays and uncleared tables for 20 minutes with no wait staff to offer any service is ridiculous regardless of how busy you might be. read more

I've been coming here since I was a little girl, and love their food and menu.... however their service is absolutely atrocious. we have waited over 30min to even be greeted, forgotten to be served, and when they did take our order half of what we ordered was not delivered, yet charged to our bill.... ignored for boxes, the list goes on. Waitresses talked shit about the restaurant, service and management right in front of customers. Loudly announced being "short staffed" when there was plenty of workers on staff, and people leaning on counters and chit chatting with each other in view of customers doing nothing to help arguing about who's area it was.... So sad to see a town favorite go so far downhill. We will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

There are things I can nitpick at like the exterior appearance, or the dimly light dining room... so, now that I got that out of the way, it definitely feels like a place the locals like to hang out at. If I was a local, too, they have enough on the menu to come back every day for a month and try something new, and have stuff left over to try another time. Service was fine. As a first time customer, wasn't sure if it was seat yourself (entered through bar/lounge area into dining room) or wait for someone, so I gave it the two minute rule and picked an empty booth. Once seated and menus handed to us, looked around at other tables and saw piles of food on plates. From my own order I would say portions were appropriate for the price. Waitress was attentive for the most part, seemed to be on her own handling numerous tables. Turkey plate (open faced, think from the luncheon menu) was a good portion for the price. However, turkey was a little on the cool side - which I think had to do with ordering a pizza and that probably being ready last. Also got a roast beef club, delicious. Picked at a little of everything and had enough to take home. The pizza would be considered a small at most places, but it's only $8, but enough for two people. Pizza was good, turkey plate wasn't bad, roast beef club was good... while the turkey soup was on the bill but never received,, I got that to go. Probably for the best so I didn't have to be rolled out of there. I'll be back, even if I have to bring a flashlight so I don't trip over anybody. read more

I was initially annoyed when my sister gave me a gift certificate for this place ; due to it being over a 20 mile distance in an area we don't frequent. We finally made the trip for drinks & dinner & we're very pleased! We sat at the (basic) bar & watched an NFL game. Only minor complaint is that the bar is brightly lit. In contrast; the restaurant side is very dark. Sierra was our barmaid. I totally recommend her as she was friendly & professional.Atmosphere at the bar was pleasant & appeared to be a good amount of regulars. A heaping cup of kale soup came with my fiancés fish/chips. I ordered a 3 way combo pizza which was mid-sized and had plentiful toppings. Drinks were fine & Keno is avaliable.Prices are fair & affordable. Someone would have to be insane to pass this hidden gem & go down the road to 99 for frozen dinners.We will be back because this spot is worth the ride. read more

Visiting nearby and wanted a cozy, casual place with pizza, cocktails and Keno, Vels fit the bill. Great cosmo made by bartender Sam. We eat pizza twice a week and although theirs may not be everyone's cup of tea, it was good. The bottom wasn't as crispy as I prefer and the crust was flaky, but I really liked the sauce and it was overloaded with pepperoni (see pic). I'm a bit of a meatball snob, but decided to order a side meatball because why not? It was too dense for my liking, but definitely homemade with good flavor and the sauce was really good (bright flavors with a hint of spice). We were at a machine installation site close by for work and we did a carry out dinner from Vel's. As we entered a waitress immediately greeted us. We ordered fried calamari, hot wings, onion rings and cheese ravioli. We waited only for 15 minutes after ordering food. It was fast and convenient. Ravioli was freshly made and moist. Sauce was home made, lightly acidic with fresh tomato. Calamari was also fresh, soft with crisp layer of batter. The bar space was a bit tiny so maintaining Covid standard was difficult but everyone from staff was wearing masks properly. I can assume this bar is where small community of workers and families around the area gather for chitchat and casual dinner. Overall it was a great experience! read more

We had a new wait staff person, only his 2nd shift. Seemed like the restaurant just sent him out there unprepared as he had to check with the kitchen staff on every question asked. Nice person and will be a good wait person when trained properly. Although the restaurant seems to lack training. Order for 3 was given at 7:15, an hour later we had only been given rolls and soup. Dinner was still not out of the kitchen, or ready for pick up when we asked about it an hour later, even though 3 tables that came in after us had been served their food and were almost finished. We had to leave, as we were there after a wake and had things still to do. No one offered to make this right after we complained except to say basically 'wait longer and we'll bag it up for you'. Talk about insult to injury. That's so not right especially in this day and age where restaurants aren't doing well with workers or patrons. Management on last night was a joke, she obviously didn't care as she never even made an attempt to come over to the table to see what the issue was. On the way home, a phone call was made to that manager to discuss what had just occurred. When there was a cell phone drop out during the conversation, she got upset and stated that the caller was a "F'n A$$hole". We were fairly regulars there, and certainly won't be back after what transpired. She needs to be fired, and Vel's needs to get their act together. I am a senior and have never had such a horrid experience in my life at any restaurant. This is definitely not a way to do business.!!!! We won't ever be back, and will pass on this bad experience to others.!!! read more

It's been over 10 years since I've been to Vel's and gave them a 2* rating. I thought it was time to give them another try. On my last visit, I got Italian food and was far from impressed. This time we both got prime rib at the recommendation of fellow Elite Yelper Dave T. At Dave's suggestion, we sat at a table in the bar. I normally avoid bars due to the high noise level, but the noise was not a problem in this case. We were easily able to carry on conversations throughout the meal. The service as friendly, but not overly efficient. We never did get the water we asked for. In comparing prime rib, the easiest comparison for me is the 99 Restaurant about a mile up the road. We go to the 99 often and have a good feel what to expect from their prime rib. Both restaurants are in the same price range. The problem with the 99 is that they only serve prime rib 4 days a week and are frequently out of it when we go there expecting to order it. The rime rib at Vel's was a large portion, proper doneness, and tender. My biggest problem was that it was served just slightly above room temperature. Maybe if we had either been sitting at the bar or in the main dining room, it might have come out sooner and warmer. On a taste comparison between the two restaurants, I have to give the edge to the 99. I believe that the biggest difference is between the juices served with the beef. The meat juice at the 99 is a lot more flavorful and adds to the overall taste experience. I found the juice at Vel's uninspiring. We each had a glass of Cabernet, I would not recommend it, but it was drinkable. I wish one of us had tried the Pinot Noir. We will next time. I give it an overall rating of 3.5. This could easily make it to 4 on my next visit, and there will be another one. read more
