Food is delicious and plentiful and the price is reasonable. Friendly staff makes you feel at home.

Dined at Vel's last night on our way home from the south shore to the Cape. Vel's brought back the nostalgia of growing up in the 1960s when the "old" route to Cape Cod from Boston was Route 58 to 28 and then to the Cape. This was before Route 3 was extended from Pembroke to the Cape. Both routes--58 and 28--were lined with various mom and pop type eateries. Vel's must be a survivor of those golden days for travel along those two roads. The building and interior show their age, but both the service and the quality of the food was absolutely first-rate. After waiting just a few minutes to be seated--and the place was packed at 6:15 on a Thursday--the hostess settled us in and within another few minutes our wait-person arrived. Since the hostess had given us menus, we were ready to order drinks and dinner. The appetizers arrived very quickly (frankly it was amazing given how crowded the place was). The Portuguese kale soup was outstanding, as good as any as I've made or have had at Portuguese restaurants in New Bedford. My wife's garden salad, with oil and vinegar on the side, had plenty of fresh vegetables and was of an ample size. No sooner than we finished the apps, our main dishes arrived--we both ordered prime rib (which is Vel's menu every night, not just as weekly special). It was a very large cut of meat, mine perfectly medium rare and my wife's perfectly medium. A baked potato (with sour cream and butter) along with garlic and cheese infused green beans came with my wife's meal, I had spiced red beets and the green beans. The beans were very nicely cooked--not overcooked--and very flavorful as were the beets. Someone in the kitchen knows that they are doing and is taking pride in their food. Fresh rolls came with meal--and they were indeed fresh and warm. The prime rib itself was delicious as was the au jus which liberally covered the meat and the plate. Our wait-person came back twice to check on us before bringing our check. No room for dessert. Again, given how jammed the place was the speed with which the food was delivered along with the attentiveness and friendliness of the wait-persons was really pretty incredible. It's a pity that Route 3 put so many of these mom and pop establishments out of business, we were delighted to discover this nostalgic remnant of a slower time. read more

The onion rings were most likely cooked in the same oil as seafood as my onion rings tasted like fish. Instead of providing fresh cups for refills they took our cups with straws back and refilled them. That is NOT hygienic. Will not be eating here again. Needed to grab a quick lunch prior to visiting a friend in the area. Vel's seemed to have favorable reviews so we decided on this place. We were confused on which was the front door. There are two doors facing the road. The left door leads to the dining room. The right door leads to the bar area. It is definitely a townie restaurant. We stood out like a sore thumb sitting at a table in the bar area! I ordered the cheese burger deluxe while my friend got the shepherd's pie. Food was decent and appropriately priced. The restaurant is very casual. The ambience is a bit dated ... but we have never minded. The menu is made up of a variety of comfort food (my wife for some reason loves the liver and onions - whatever). I have enjoyed a variety of items - chicken cacciatore, meat loaf, and other items. Always plenty to eat. A big plus for us is that this is one of the few places we have found in the area that has salad .... We often find this as our place to go on a Friday night when we want to get out without any fuss. read more

this place was overall.. eh. we had a group of 4, and we were greeted by a waiter that seemed very new to the job, and i mean what are you gonna do. athough it was decorated okay, the ambiance of this place was... kinda weird. i was laughing with my cousin while waiting for our food and got a lot of judgemental stares. also, the waitresses would gossip right in front of you constantly. now, i'm aware this is not something the restaurant can fix but just something to point out. the food was subpar, nothing extraordinary. this was a good one time place, but honestly nothing special. i wouldn't come here for a special event dinner like graduation, there are lots of better places in the area! read more

I would have given 5 stars but the decor is dark and antiquated. A really comfortable place...very casual. They had a steady stream of customers even at 3:00 in the afternoon. My husband got the delicious clam chowder with a club sandwich, and I got the fish sandwich which came with French fries and a very tasty coleslaw. Great food! Our waitress was super busy but was attentive, efficient and upbeat - great job, Casey! We both love "regular", great food...and we will be coming back. Huge portions, good food, nicely priced old fashion good old restaurant. We went to on a Tuesday and on Monday and Tuesday you get free soup and salad and a dessert with your entree. I had baked stuffed haddock Newburgh with shoring in the stuffing I choose onion rings for a side and if was huge and summer squash my husband got the seafood platter loaded with sea scallops and some were the size of a silver dollar!!! We ate very little of our entrees because of the rolls, soup and salad and had our dessert, puddings were the choices but I opted for the lemon cake which was an extra $1.50 I think and it was heavenly! This place is great for retro night! Picture your local townie restaurant circa 1972. Dark panelling, paper placemats, those little red candle things from Italian restaurants of yore, low acoustic ceiling tiles. No fancy food here, chicken parm, red sauce, baked and fried seafood and charbroiled steaks. If I could give a zero I would. My meal arrived cold. I asked 2 people, including the hostess, to please send my server over. No one ever did. I asked another waitress in the dining room to please get our server. She took my plate to be warmed up. I NEVER GOT IT BACK! I finally saw our server, called her over and told her what happened. Passing through from Atlanta, we were in the mood for seafood and found this place using the Yelp app. First impression upon entering, the word "cozy' came the mind. It was dim lit, very out dated, yet, comfortable. The lounge side was very busy and loud, but the dining side was only semi busy and quiet. At first glance of the seafood menu, it looked a bit on the expensive side, but after ordering a $20 dinner each, we soon saw the value. Our $20 meal came with bread rolls, soup, salad, a massive helping of the main course, two vegetables, and a pudding for desert. It was more than one person could eat. The food was delicious and generously proportioned with a quiet small town restaraunt atmosphere and our waitress, Courtney, was very beautiful, very friendly, very attentive, and all the time with a smile on her face which just added to the wonderful experience. The only downside I found in this place was that when I ordered a Mt. Dew I was brought 20 oz. bottle for $2. I should have stopped at the convenient store and brought my own for cheaper. Great neighborhood restaurant. Vels has been in Wareham for years and continues to be really busy because of the delicious food and reasonable prices. I am a big fan of the stuffed mushrooms. I've had the filet a couple times, both times it was seasoned well but once it was well done vs medium like I ordered. My long island icedwas fantastic! I wish the inside was a bit nicer, the location definitely shows its age as some of the booths have ripped seats and it doesnt look loke theres been an interiror update in a while. Because of that we're more likely to get take out vs stay in. For a good lunch or dinner at reasonable prices it as worth checking out. read more

I've been coming to Vel's with my friends for years. It's a Wareham institution, and I'm ashamed I haven't reviewed it until now. The menu features a variety of favorites, from appetizers, fried and baked chicken, soup, salads, seafood, steaks (sirloin, steak tips, ribeye and even filet mignon).Other options include veal or eggplant parm, hot turkey dinner, chicken pot pie, italian dinner plates, pizzas, subs, and sandwich plates. The dinner menu is served all day, and includes larger portions of food than the lunch menu, for a few dollars more. Also look for daily specials, written on an index card, that the waitress will bring to you. Beverages include Pepsi soda products (with free refills), and a full bar with alcoholic drinks. I usually find myself ordering from the Lighter Fare section of the menu while I'm here (They have a fried chicken sandwich where the chicken filet is double the size of the roll it's served on). French fries are steak fries, nice and thick, always perfectly crispy. The steak tips are also a sure thing, the marinade they use is amazing. Portions are good, too. Even ordering off the lunch menu, I always end up taking things home and making two meals out of them. They have a dessert menu, but I've never seen it, since I'm always full before I finish my entree. Prices are fair for the amount of food you get. Staff are friendly and attentive. Oh, and note to all you gamblers: They have lottery tickets right on premises. Daily games (Megabucks, Mass Cash, Mega Millions, Powerball) can be purchased from the bartender, while they have a vending machine for instant scratch games. Ignore the decor because the food is excellent! Our waitress was wonderful and wanted to make sure our visit was as good as she could possibly make it. We went on a Wednesday and the place was empty food came out very quickly. I wasn't thrilled about the sides or the desserts which seemed like they were possibly from cans or the freezer but the main dishes were fantastic.
