Eight years ago, our nephews came to visit, and we took them to the Velvet Taco on Central Expressway. They were obsessed - like, "Why don't we have this in DC?" obsessed. Fast‑forward to last week, they came back to town and immediately asked if we could go again. The Central spot is gone, so we went to the Deep Ellum location, hoping it would still hit the same. It did - and honestly, the good vibes started with the guy taking our order - pretty sure his name was Phillip. He was super friendly, had great energy, and just made the whole experience better. The nephews loved the food just as much as they did years ago. One of them thought the birria consomé was so good he saved the leftovers and used it with chicken nuggets later that night. That says something! We hung out for a while, catching up and enjoying the food, and every now and then Philip would swing by to check on us like we were old friends. It ended up being one of those simple, perfect meals where everyone leaves happy. We'll definitely be back. read more

I ordered the Say What combo which came with two tacos, queso and chips And a drink which I chose the Sangarita. It was hard to choose my favorite taco but the Spicy Tikka Masala definitely stood out. It had just the right amount of spice and experience Indian food in the form of a taco was amazing. The Sangarita was also really good and had the right amount of sweetness and strong. The service was fast and the staff were so helpful with my first experience answering questions about the menu. I often come here when i'm seeing shows in Deep Ellum and it's always a clean, well lit, and delicious experience. This time I took my little sister and she devoured her Chicken & Waffle tacos while I got the Quesa Birria Duo and the weekly special, which was a Peruvian meat taco. All were tasty and fairly priced. I wish they had slightly more staff on payroll to speed up how long it takes to get the food out, but the wait isn't abysmal. I'll be back again and again. I'd say overall the food was very mid for me. Chimichurri is my favorite but my Chimichurri tacos were not giving very much flavor....and the rice on the rack was VERY messy. Queso also mid. Store was clean, employees were friendly, food came out pretty quickly, and it was spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered 3 tacos: 1) Mexi-Cal shrimp 2) slow-roasted angus brisket 3) fish n chips. I remember liking the fish n chips the other time I came and it was still good this time around. It was a popular one amongst the other members of my party. They also liked the grilled steak a lot, so I'll have to try that one next time. I liked the slow-roasted angus brisket better than the Mexi-Cal shrimp. I think I would enjoy these tacos more if they could be on corn tortillas. Okay, I was reluctant to try Velvet Taco because I couldn't seem to find a normal taco. Lol like all the options had peanut butter, curry, pineapples, all kind of stuff, and I'm a rather simple gal. But I gave it a try this past weekend and I was shocked! I got the slow-roasted angus brisket taco and it was so good! It was huge, so thank God I only got one. But all the flavors blended together so well. The cheese, the corn, the tender brisket. Loved it. And that crusted tortilla was perfect! I love when people care enough to show my tortillas TLC. I can't speak to the ambience of the place because I ordered online and had someone pick it up for me. But I look forward to going in and feeling the vibe out for myself. The ONLY reason I am taking away a star is because after I finished eating it, I felt nauseous like immediately. I don't know what the issue was. When you arrive parking is a bit tricky, but we luckily found street parking right off Elm Street. When you walk up the restaurant is located on the corner of North Good Latimer Expy & Elm Street. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. When you walk in, you'll proceed to the counter to order, sit down once you are done ordering, and your name will be called once your food is ready. I ordered the #11 Grilled flank steak (steak, grilled portobello mushrooms, queso blanco, grilled red onion, Mexican oregano, corn tortilla), the #15 Grilled salmon (napa slaw, citrus lime crema, pickled fresnos, roasted corn pico, avocado crema, micro cilantro, corn tortilla), and the Elote Guac (classic guac, roasted corn, queso listo, Valentina, citrus lime crema, queso). The tortillas were falling apart with how loaded the tacos were and they were so tasty. The Elote Guac is essentially just half Guac and half Elote in a cup and was by far our favorite item. Parking is Downtown Parking, so it's more timing than anything. Place was immaculately clean and the patio was as cool as possible and that was comfortable given the heat. I love the orders being plaved opposite of pickup and it prevents congestion. I ordered the number 11 and 11.5. Tacos were excellent and those tots were amazing. I give them props for such a wide range of meats from chimichurri to salmon to chicken&waffles but thats about it. I love the fact that you can swap out the tortillas for lettuce with any taco you order.
