I arrived in Dallas very late due to delays and found Velvet Taco at the recommendation of a friend. I got the "pick 2" which is two tacos, a side, and a drink. My partner and I split it and got a rotisserie taco and the Cauliflower one and for our side we chose guacamole. The food was very good however the tacos made quite the mess. The guacamole was really good. The inside of the place was nice and provided a good spot for us to talk and enjoy our tacos. Being from Washington State and just visiting Texas, we had never heard of the Velvet Taco (ahem, well the chain restaurant that is). We saw the sign and wondered if it was sex shop or a taco restaurant. My hubby and I decided to give it a try. WE WERE IMPRESSED BY EVERYTHING. The ambiance both inside and outside were super cool, we loved the signs, the lighting, and the outside eating area with misters. The menu was expansive and had so many choices, it made it hard to decide what to eat. I loved that you could mix up the type of tacos you wanted and customize your whole meal, really. What a super cool concept. We received our food within 10 minutes, cooked fresh to order. Both of us loved every single thing we ordered (fish, shrimp, and steak tacos). Prices were reasonable for the decent portions we received. The chips and elote dip were outstanding and the sides my hubby got were good too. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. This is not your traditional taco joint, they're bougie meals on a taco delivery device. Their frozen margaritas are on point, and I get them every time. The only thing I don't like is that the tacos are very drippy, and they come out on a metal zigzag tray with paper and no plate, so sauces can end up on you it your not strategic with the paper towels. The price is a little high but seems fair. What I don't understand is the auto highlighting for tipping when there's no table service. This was my first order from Velvet Taco, I heard they were delicious non-traditional tacos, and they did not disappoint. I ordered a two taco combo, both birria pork with a side of classic guac. The portion was very generous, I ended up with 4 tacos in all not knowing the birria come 2 to an order. The guac was fresh and had just the right amount of cilantro and onions without a lot of fuss. I ordered delivery which was quick and hot (unfortunately the Uber driver misplaced my sangria, but the restaurant made it right, even though it meant they sacrificed the sale). The menu is split by the type of meat or their vegetarian options. They also have gluten free options as well. We went with the queso blanco to start with, then got #16 Fish n' Chips, #11 Grilled Flank Steak, #3 Spicy Tikka Chicken, and #1 Buffalo Chicken. All were really good and so flavorful. My favorite was definitely the grilled flank steak. Perfectly seasoned and really good mix of ingredients in the taco. Tacos are good. Lots of variety, unless you are a carnivore, then there is maybe one choice. That's the case for my wife, but she liked what she had. You order at the counter and pick up when called, so there isn't much to say about "service". It's not cheap, we had three tacos and one Ranch Water and it was $32.00 with tax and tip. Honestly, I can't see that it is worth that, especially considering the seating options, mostly hard metal or wood stools at bar-height community tables. The tables on the patio are set up mostly for 4 to 6 people, and many had just two people taking up a 6 top. Drink options are very limited- a few beers, some sodas, and a marg made with a mix. First time trying Velvet Taco and I'm glad I did. Place has cool decor and atmosphere, seems like it would be a cool place to even watch a game but no TV's. The tacos are good fresh ingredients and lots of cilantro and other veggies. I had the brisket taco and the rotisserie chicken taco and would order it again anytime. Meat flavored well and taco shells tasted nice and fresh. FATBOY TIP: don't order more than you can eat at the restaurant, tacos do not taste or hold up good after they cool down. The menu is eclectic with something in it for everybody. I got the green chili pork taco and it was everything you can expect from this type of taco but so much better. Their fresh-made tortillas are BOMB. I also decided to go outside my comfort zone and ordered off the (available all day) brunch menu - chicken and waffles taco. Say whAaat?! A waffle taco is stuffed with crisp tenders, peppered bacon, peppercorn gravy, green apple slaw, maple syrup, red chile aioli and chives. IT. WORKS. It's so so good. They also have tacos like chicken tikka masala, falafel, Nashville hot tofu, Cuban pig, Kimchi, shrimp and grits, and flank steak. Way more than that but this gives an idea of the wide variety you can choose from, for vegetarians too! Also their pulled pork tater tots are so good they'll make you want to slap yo' gramma. They have some sort of goat cheese crema plus spicy stuff and cheese and a fried egg... y'all I don't really know what all goes into it but please eat it and get your own damn tots, don't share! I tried out their chicken tikka taco as well as the chicken and waffle taco & both were SO TASTY!!! The chicken tikka has a good amount of spice to it, which I loved. The chicken and waffle taco was the perfect comfort food. I also tried the crisp tots and local egg, which I highly recommend. The goat cheese on the tots were the cherry on top! I will be dreaming about those tots tonight. Last but not least, their red velvet cake was out of this world!!! The sauce that they put on top is SO good. Our first time to try the new Velvet Taco in Richardson! They did a really great job transforming what was an old gas station/tire shop into a trendy taco shop. I have to start out to say, my personal tastes are for food on the blander side. If you like really spicy food, you will probably love it. I ordered according and removed any spicy salsa's or sauces. Tried the rotisserie chicken and it was ok. The slow roasted angus brisket taco was good (but I missed something spicy on there, probably the salsa) and the inside of my mouth was on a slow burn. I really like the outside of the tortilla being crispy and the chunk of avocado was great. I think my favorite was the picnic chicken, crispy chicken pieces with diced potatoes. read more
