I liked it. I didn't realize it was an order at the counter place but that's okay. The staff brings the tray right to your table when it is ready do that was nice. I looked the staff. Super nice and attentive. There were only two people working that I could see, a gentleman who may have been the manager and a young lady. The man was so respectful and helpful when we said it was our first time. He pulled out the menu and went through it with us. The wall menu is also super helpful. As the tacos are mostly over $6 each, I noticed they have a combo for two tacos, a side and a drink. Great deal if you add two tacos, guac & chips and a drink up separately and compare to the regular price. I ordered the CHIMICHURRI STEAK* grilled steak, basmati rice, chimichurri, avocado, pickled fresnos, queso fresco, flour tortilla. I found this flavorful but I didn't thoroughly read about the rice. I don't care for rice in my tacos. But other than that. I liked it. I also ordered the HATCH CHILE PORK. guac, poblano slaw, pickled fresnos, queso fresco, micro cilantro, corn tortilla This was nice & spicy. Tortillas and all the ingredients seamed very fresh. For my side I ordered the guac and chips. The guac is delicious. Very refreshing. I think the chips are store bought but they are blue corn which I prefer anyway. My husband ordered the GRILLED SALMON. napa slaw, lime crema, pickled fresnos, corn pico, avocado crema, micro cilantro, corn tortilla. He said it was delicious. He also ordered the QUESA BIRRIA. pulled pork, gruyere, queso listo, pickled red onion, micro cilantro, griddled corn tortilla, birria consomé for dipping. He said it was good but lacked flavor. My only negative, and I don't want to necessarily blame the staff as it is the owner's duty to hire enough staff to care for the place. But the floors had little pieces of food spilled everywhere and the tables were sticky. Same with the soda and condiments area. It needs a good cleaning through day. I've been here for a Yelp event and couldn't remember if the tacos were good because I was too busy running my mouth, so tonight I came in again as I had two coupons for two FREE tacos from 2025 Yelp's Children's Museum event in October and Velvet Taco was giving away free things! I chose the cauliflower and salmon tacos and then also got a queso blanco and a frozen rita also. One thing I noted with their physical paper menu that no prices are listed, which I thought weird. Turns out the frozen rita was $7.50 and queso blanco was $5.95. The woman taking my order was super patient with me and very nice. She provided service and with a smile, now thats how I like it, do you your job well and smiling about it. The service was a bit slow but I didnt mind, I wasn't rushing to get anywhere. The ambiance here is super casual and lots of solo, couple, family diners here. They also play some fun poppy music which I enjoyed. Probably after 10-15 minutes, all my items came and then I mosied up to the second floor area to enjoy my early dinner. Nice views of downtown Scottsdale and the fresh air is always nice. Queso was good, but would have preferred the chips to be not so salty. I took my time with the frozen rita and was here for awhile slowing sipping it as I didnt wanna drive under the influence at all. No idea what cops are doing these days. Parking is a bit of a pain around here but I parked closeby, a couple of blocks away. ICE protestors were out when I was coming here, I honked a few times at them. Cauliflower taco was tasty but I think I prefer the salmon one more. I also liked how they package tacos to-go, the separate partitions are a real nice innovation. Overall, I had a good time here. I saved a little over $11 on the two free tacos and my order came to less than $20, with tax and tip. I may not make a special trip here again but if I am in the area and want a solid taco or a frozen rita, Id come back. They are open until 3am on Fridays probably for all the drunk people pouring out of bars in the area, good idea to feed them to soak up the alcohol! read more

I'd never been to Velvet Taco before (never heard of it, actually) but this place is a total vibe. It's definitely not your traditional Mexican spot--it's more of a fusion of inspirations so the creativity is awesome. (The red velvet cake? So random but it looks delicious.) I ordered the Mexi-Cali Shrimp Bowl and it was just as good as I was anticipating. The shrimp were perfectly blackened and the sriracha aioli gave it just the right amount of kick. We also shared the elote with chips, which was super fresh and the perfect side to round out the meal. Don't sleep on the drinks! We got a Kick-Ass Margarita and it was absolutely worth it--strong, fresh, and paired perfectly with the bold flavors of the food. The atmosphere is energetic and cool, making it a great place to start a night out in Old Town. And the staff is so rad. Today we tried the rotisserie chicken and the Weekly Feature aka the "WTF" taco which was a lemon pepper chicken taco. I loved the pickled celery on it. The margaritas are good for a chain and a mix. We stopped off after a movie nearby for a late dinner. The place was shockingly empty on the inside, but not soon after our arrival, it filled up quickly. A young lady opened up another register to take our order. I order the 2 taco combo (Nashville tofu), with elote. The food came up pretty quick and it was delish, especially with the sauce in the red top (nice & spicy). My friend order the shrimp bowl and I tried a shrimp and it was seasoned and cooked properly. So often places over cook shrimp, but this place prepared them well. It's a med size dining room that offers patio seating which was full (it was a beautiful night out) and apparently offers seating upstairs too. All the tables that were initially empty were clean and ready for seating. Highly still recommend this place, especially if you like spicy tofu (as a vegan option). read more

Our fave was the salmon, which came out super fresh, and a good portion. The chicken had a solid flavor from the sauce but the coating was a bit undercooked. You can get most of these as a bowl too. Pretty low key, urban hip-style atmosphere, super casual and relatively affordable with counter service and fast-food restaurant style seating. Cool upper level with outdoor seating too. I love swinging by this place. Who doesn't love good tacos? Velvet Taco is the newest indoor/outdoor patio restaurant in Downtown Scottsdale. This Texas-based restaurant took over the former Second Story Restaurant & Liquor Bar location in Scottsdale late last year. Velvet Taco's taco creations are inspired by different cultures. You can dine on the lower level or on the outdoor patio. Or you can book a room on the second story which has great views of Downtown Scottsdale. I have been able to sample a number of tacos including the Korean Fried Rice, Mexi-Cali Shrimp, Rotisserie Chicken and the Chimichurri Steak. So far everything that I have tried has been good here. My wife had first tried Velvet Taco in Austin, TX during a work trip. She RAVED about it, so when she found out Scottsdale was getting a location, she was thrilled. The restaurant is counter service style with two levels of ample seating. The decor was colorful and eclectic. We sat upstairs and we were the only one's eating up there (around 7-8PM) so it felt kind of odd. Note: They are open late on Friday and Saturday night (3AM). There was a heavy smell of cleaning product, which was not the most appetizing, but when we got our tacos, we were happy and the smell became irrelevant. The food came out fairly quickly and was hot (in temp, which is preferred) and fresh! We ordered one of each veg taco. Velvet Taco in Scottsdale is everything I want in a taco spot--creative, flavorful, and fun. We ordered a solid lineup and loved every bite. I had the Chicken Tikka and Chicken & Waffle tacos--two totally different styles, both delicious. The chicken tikka was bold and flavorful, like a full meal packed into one tortilla. The chicken and waffle taco was super unique with a soft waffle-cone-style shell that worked surprisingly well. Just a heads up--it's best eaten quickly, because the waffle shell does start to fall apart if it sits too long. My girlfriend ordered the Quesa Birria Duo and the Chimichurri Steak taco. She was all smiles the whole time and said both were packed with flavor and super satisfying. We also split the Crisp Tots & Sunny Egg--and wow. It was like a loaded breakfast bowl with perfectly crispy tater tots, creamy sauce, bacon, cheese, and a sunny-side-up egg on top. Easily sharable, but still filling enough that we brought half home. Inside, the place has a cool, casual vibe. There's upstairs balcony seating which is a great spot to hang out--just be prepared for the occasional loud engine from drivers outside trying to show off. Minor annoyance, but it didn't ruin the experience. The quality and portion size were fantastic. Two tacos each plus the shared tots was more than enough, and the fact that we had leftovers says a lot. I'm posting more photos on my Yelp review because the food looked as good as it tasted. Took my team to lunch and our group all went with the combo plate (two tacos, a side, and a drink for just under $15), which felt like an excellent deal. The tacos are bigger than your standard street taco and much more unique, with each one running about $5-6 on its own. They're flavorful, creative, and absolutely worth it. The setup is casual and fun. Ordering and pickup are on the first floor, with extra seating upstairs and bathrooms on both levels. When your food is ready, you'll hear it called out over the speakers. Parking is also easier than expected. There are a few spots out front, plus a public garage right across the street. One Star is Too Generous My husband and I were out celebrating on a Saturday night, had a few drinks, and figured tacos were a safe late-night move. Velvet Taco had 4 stars--seemed promising. Spoiler alert: it was the worst taco we've ever had. We live in Arizona, home of some seriously good tacos, so we know what a Carne Asada taco should taste like. This... was not it. Who puts rice in a taco? And worse--uncooked rice. It was crunchy in the worst way. Totally killed the vibe. To top it off, the staff (including what looked like management) were glued to their phones and clearly not concerned about the quality coming out of their kitchen. Let's start with the good: The employees here are amazingly friendly. The woman at the counter helped me choose tacos, and she recommended me the most DELICIOUS MARGARITA!!!! Now the food.. the tacos were absolutely disgusting. The fillings don't make any sense and the tortillas are served cold. There's no choice of flour or corn, or at least I wasn't offered that. The steak was EXTREMELY tough and the "quac" didn't have salt or pepper.. it was just mashed avocado. There's no flavor and the fillings inside these tacos are offensive. White rice, buffalo sauce. It's just disgusting. Furthermore - I don't understand why there's a tipping system if they don't bring the food out to you.. we tipped 20 percent and realized that we had to go get our food from the counter when our name was called.. counter service is fine, but I recommend giving customers table markers and running the food out if you'd like customers to tip for service. I wouldn't recommend eating here. It's not authentic tacos and they played with the ingredients too much. read more

The food came out okay and it was edible, but the quality was questionable, the flavor lacking, and all of these items that should have been served warm were more like room temperature. Luckily we enjoyed each others' company and some fresh air as we ate outdoors, but I found the prices high for this concept and the underwhelming experience. As soon as you walk up. Either placement of eating at the bottom or top. Custer service was fantastic. Meeting the GM and seeing his vision was intriguing. But the ambiance was relaxing. These tacos were the best I've ever had. They had the most creative and flavorful combinations and had options for everyone. It was reasonably priced and filling, and tasted absolutely wonderful. This one lady, Stephanie (sorry if I butchered that) was utterly amazing. She gave us complimentary dishes that elevated our experience so so much. She was so attentive and the dishes she gifted us were ones we had talked about sounding good but ended up getting different ones. I moved to Phoenix from Houston in January, and it's always nice to discover a restaurant that's in Houston also having a location in Phoenix. That was just the case with Velvet Taco. Located in Old Town in Scottsdale, I stopped by for takeout on a Saturday evening around 8 p.m. after watching some college football. I placed my order through their website which was a seamless process. Parking isn't easy in Old Town but I found some free parking on a side street close by. Ambiance (4/5): Think of Velvet Taco as a somewhat hipster, but comfortable, taco joint. While we didn't dine in, I noticed that they had plenty of seating downstairs, as well as a second level. Service (N/A): You order at the counter and then they call your order when it's ready, so service isn't a big part of the experience. And even more so for takeout. I will mention that the lady who gave us our food was friendly and greeted us with a smile. The little things count. Drinks (N/A): No drinks on this occasion, but I've been to Velvet Taco many times over the years. They are known for their frozen margaritas. They're tasty and they pack a punch. I'll definitely have to get one next time around. Food (4/5): I went with three tacos: paneer taco, chicken parm taco, and chimichurri steak taco. The paneer taco is one of their vegetarian tacos. I'm not a veggie type of guy, but I do love this Indian cheese. Talk about creativity. I can't say I've had a paneer taco anywhere else in my life. My second taco, the chicken parm taco, sounds exactly like it was. This one is not one of their standard tacos. It was their taco of the week. They offer a different, limited-time taco every week. Also, my first time having chicken parm in a taco format. My final taco, the chimichurri steak taco was similarly delicious. I've had chimichurri at various Latin restaurants and this was my first time having it in a taco. A+ to Velvet Taco for the creativity. And three tacos are more than filling. I could only finish two and a bite or two of the third. Velvet Taco definitely doesn't offer traditional tacos. Introduced to Velvet Taco at a Yelp event. Needed a quick bite after a self-induced, grueling shopping trip to the mall on my first visit. I remember what I ordered, a Chicken Tikka bowl, which I was able to split into two meals: dinner and leftovers for Monday's lunch. Second visit was with my husband, who raved about his experience, which is something to be said about a native desert dweller who has had his fair share of tacos! We had the trio of dips appetizer, which was huge, and when we went to take it home, they gave us a fresh bag of tortilla chips. Service was excellent, choices were so fun and flavorful. Some might not enjoy the non-traditional flair of the menu, but for me, that's the draw since there is an overabundance of traditional tacos in the Metro-Phoenix area. So glad they opened another shop closer to us in the old Paradise Valley mall area. Oh, I forgot to mention the vegetarian options like the sweet potato taco I had are on point! read more

My son and I came in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and should've probably figured right away that with the lack of diners and very cold and bleak feeling inside, we should've gone elsewhere. But I had seen some posts about this spot on social media, so we stuck around, ordered, and sat outside for a little bit more sunshine. I ordered the two taco meal - spicy chicken tikka taco & picnic chicken taco, with chips & queso as the side. Both tacos were lacking flavor; unexpectedly, the picnic taco was slightly better, except the crispy chicken skin was basically chunks of fat on top of the taco, and not crispy at all. The chicken tikka was had an odd flavor, and the rice wasn't ideal. I did like the queso but it would've been better without the extra sauces on top. My son had gotten a kids quesadilla, which was fine. Service was not bad, they brought out our food but I believe the expectation is to clear your own table. I loved the cheesy exterior of the taco shell and the filling was so delicious. I also always go for the birria and buffalo chicken tacos as they're my favorites too. I'd say the brisket topped both of them though! This is a casual order with the cashier then sit down and they'll bring it to your table restaurant which was great for a more casual date night. My last review here was a 5 stars but I'm adding a new 1 star review due to the most idiotic and frustrating business decisions made by the lazy management who run this location. The Good: Before digging into Velvet, I will standby the food provided being 5/5 95% of the time. Tacos always consistent, margaritas are solid, and amazing elote. The ugly: The new management here is ruining prime Old Town real estate. These lazy workers will close down the entire upper rooftop level of the restaurant pretty much every other day it's a toss up. Even on weekends at 5pm...they shut it down due to laziness. Back when Velvet opened the upstairs was packed and the management NEVER closed it. The entire appeal for going to Velvet is to take advantage of the rooftop because the downstairs is a disgusting sticky mess. They are so lazy here that the workers close down one of the main trash cans (there are two) leaving only one overflowing trash can. Like wtf? The floor is already gross so it's almost inviting it to be grosser. The theme seems to be that they are trying to close rush the restaurant hours before closing time. The seating downstairs is cramped/packed like sardines with seats directly next to the line where everyone orders. They shut down the top level and force people to sit at uncomfortable high top tables with strangers. The floor is usually disgusting and sticky too. The outside 1st floor is nice but this is Arizona. Also the reason why Velvet is never packed is because they choose not to install some TVs. You will see Loco Patron and Cien Agaves packed with people who want to watch sporting events right in the same vicinity and you won't get that at Velvet. Actually pretty much every single spot next to Velvet plays a sporting game. $5 margarita deal at Velvet is great, but sick, I can't even ******* go to your rooftop to enjoy your alcohol or watch a sporting event so why would I want to go here and sit half a foot away from the table next to me in a hot over cramped room? The upstairs is pretty much never open unless you don't work and go here at 11am on a weekday. Like seriously your food and drinks are good here but the way you utilize your actual real estate is so idiotic. I had 7 buddies in town and decided to go somewhere else that provided drinks + entertainment and usable eating space that isn't some high top 2 feet away from where the Uber Eats drivers wait for the food. I've never seen Velvet packed like other Mexican spots in the area and I wonder why?!! It's a shame, most of the time just pick the food up and leave, especially in the summer. The previous restaurant had a rooftop bar in this same exact spot that was always packed and it's a shame that Velvet which has excellent food does not know how to bring in more customers. Get it together. Wanted to get margs here this weekend but decided to go somewhere else as I didn't want to sit with the lads next to the screaming babies by the sticky drink station. Their likely excuse for closing things super early is because "it's not crowded" but the reason it's not as crowded as it used to be when Velvet opened is due to the above reasons. Could have probably 2-5x their profits the past few months if they had some TVs upstairs (with it open of course) with some music too. I standby the food being excellent here so if you are just wanting a chill cheaper meal then you'll have a great time at Velvet as they're very consistent with food but I would probably go here way more with more friends if they fixed these common sense issues. read more

My personal experience was excellent. Customer service was great, great menu selection of unique taco choices. It's a casual vibe in the heart of downtown Scottsdale. The chicken and waffle is where it's at for me. Tacos held great in flavor, fresh veggies and toppings with house made sauces to elevate these tasty tacos.
