So glad this place remains on the boulevard. A true collector of collections. I walked each isle with enthusiasm as I recalled memories of my childhood. The location itself is in a pretty sketchy part of town, so don't keep any valuables in your car... but other than that it's a pretty solid place. Owner(s?) are super kind, and there are plenty of comics, old and new. I only really collect modern day stuff, so cover prices is typically what you're paying on those (from what I gathered). If you're looking for first prints of some modern popular stuff you can't find elsewhere, solid chance they'll have it here. Only real complaint is the lack of card payment. They're cash only, unless you want to use an app like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. Definitely not a big issue, but slightly annoying as it wasn't advertised going in from what I saw. read more

We were in town and we always like to check out comic book stores. The store is pretty cool. So many comics to look at and go through. They have some $1 comics at the entrance if you have time to go through them. Toys also throughout the store. Employees were friendly and let you do your thing. I was looking for a very old graphic novel book that was published in 2012. The owner eventually helped us and told me where I can look for the individual issues. We couldn't find anything, which is understandable, because the issues & book are old. What made my experience so negative wasn't the lack of striking gold in a comic book library... it was the way we were treated. No one said hi when we came in. It took 10 minutes for the gruff offer of help to come, and instead of help we were set to find the item ourselves. Luckily, this only took a few minutes of perusal as all of the boxes were labeled and legible. I just didn't get a good vibe. I didn't feel welcome or wanted. The place seemed interesting at first... off the beaten path, a huge collection of comics, collectible figurines, and interesting (if cramped) displays. But, despite the cool underground feel of the place... I felt the need to bolt out of there quickly. Also, the parking sucks, but I don't hold that against the place. My review is based on how I was spoken to and how unwelcome and uncomfortable I felt. As a side-note: There were no graphic novel books. read more

Velvet Underground is the best comic store in Las Vegas, hands down. The owner, Steven is incredibly generous with his extensive knowledge of the industry, artists, and releases. My wife, Yendy, was a lifelong admirer of comics but never started a collection. Crowded but definitely a good selection of both modern and old comics, collectibles, etc. There is literally floor to ceiling merchandise. Some comics were taped to the ceiling when I went in. Downside: aisles are very narrow and you're practically tripping over items as you walk through the building. There is also no AC. First of all. This place is awesome and worth seeing even if you don't make a purchase. I see a lot of negative reviews and just don't understand why. Yes. It's cash only but why is that a problem? It is absolutely not in a seedy part of town. It's not the newest nicest neighborhood but if this is what you consider seedy then you probably grew up eating cake. Yes. The parking kinda sucks. Yes. I had trouble finding what I was looking for because I didn't know where to look. However. You know what they do have? Thousands upon thousands of comics. If it's not in the front it's in the back. They had multiple copies of multiple variants of out of print comics I couldn't get anywhere else in town and gave them to me considerable cheaper than I could order them online. You know what else they have? They have an owner with a true passion for collecting. He's been collecting comics for almost 40 years along with other collectibles and has amassed a wealth of knowledge that he loves to share. read more

Came in here to get a gift. Idk if the owner or an employee was working but he explained no prices on any comics because of theft exposure. He's right this is a terrible part of town and you won't feel safe here or leaving your car out front. So I had no idea what I could afford. He told me comics in case were graded 9.0 but they weren't graded so I guess he's estimating. It also doesn't make sense not to put prices on them and then put them in a glass case. Like a criminal wouldn't steal the old ones in the case if they robbed the place. He was so rude I decided to spent my $200 elsewhere. There are too many comic book stores in LV. I love this place. They have a HUGE selection of comic books and merch. It's very tight spaces, so be prepared for that- but that's because of how much stuff they have! They don't accept cards, so make sure you bring cash. The staff in there make great recommendations based on what you like. Always friendly. We bring our kids in there and they are always wonderful to them. With repeat customers they will start putting things aside for you so you can easily come and pick up. If you're new into comics, try going on Free Comic Book Day. You can start seeing what your vibe is, and they don't just do the same books everyone else does- they usually have a bigger selection of different genres. Small parking lots, but it near homes so you can just park on the street. Local owner, so I love supporting them and one of my best friends works there so I love supporting her as well. This is the best unknown comic shop in all of the Vegas Valley. I passed by Velvet Underground on my way back to work one day. It is in the corner of what is a very seedy Strip Mall. Blink and you will miss this treasure trove of Geekdom! Apparently the Velvet Underground is the oldest comic book store in all of Las Vegas, and stepping into the store brings you back, way back to the 1970's. It really is a throwback to the time! It has not been redecorated since that era, and I love it for that. You can spend a lot of time here just perusing what seems like endless amounts of long & short boxes of comics, all randomly placed with toys and memorabilia of all kinds...EVERYWHERE. Don't go here if you like alphabetized and organized, it will drive you crazy! But oh yes, owner-operator Steve Riddle (aka 'The Riddler') knows where everything is located in his slice of heaven and has a mind like a steel trap when locating anything from a new title to something more obscure for you. Ask...and he will tell! Velvet Underground is where I go when I can't get my hands on that latest issue of Walking Dead because I forgot to order it. Steve will usually have something for me when I do need it, or will get it for me if I do not. Great guy, Steve. Been in the business for years and yet not many folks in the LV comic business talk about him much. They consider him 'odd'. But spend some time with the guy shootin' the $hi+ and become a regular, he will treat you well. Who cares about odd anyway? The most interesting people I've ever met have been just a little bit off their rockers. Normal is all relative these days. Velvet Underground is Steve's baby, he is there constantly almost all day, every day. It's his haven, almost another home. If you have the courage to peruse his shop (watch out for falling merchandise...ha ha), you will find in one corner he has a drum kit and guitars always ready for an impromptu rock band session. For real! One cool cat. Speaking of which, you see a black cat running around from shelf to shelf in the store? Don't worry, no bad luck there, just Steve's pride & joy. There's everything comic and comic related in Velvet Underground, comics (duh), graphic novels, cards, toys, posters, trinkets, you name it. There's a lot of throwbacks too - lots of older Star Wars stuff and older comic book figures. You really need to spend some time in the shop because it's almost like an indoor swap meet! I went in there and asked the owner if they had a comic I was trying to find and he came at me so aggressive for no reason , literally going off on me like what?? He literally was yelling at me to look at him?? Like who does that , horrible customer service. Don't waste your time or money here. A store not interested in selling. I was so excited to go to this store when I read they have the most silver age comics in Nevada. The stores atmosphere was amazing. However they had only 40 or 50 silver age comics on display. When I asked if they kept them somewhere special? the woman looked at me and said they were just around in random boxes. While she was talking you could see behind her a giant wall of silver age set up in the back room. When I asked her if I could see those she said they were just for the staff. I spent another few minutes looking in boxes and never saw one silver age title. This store had so much promise. There's nothing worse than a store with no intention of parting with their good stuff. A lot of vintage comics on display. A gentleman that I believe is the owner was polite when I entered and departed. That's where the compliments end. Nothing is alphabetized. I had to skim through many mislabeled boxes. A lot of comics do not have a price tag on it. Would this mean the cover price is still in effect? (That would be a plus) The aisles are extremely narrow. If you are using a wheelchair or crutches, good luck. As I went to purchase three comics, I took my debit card out of my pocket. I was told the store only accepts cash. So that comic that DID have a $100.00 price tag, you want me to pay cash for. Do we realize, not everyone carries large bills since many businesses will not accept bill's over $20.00? The second I walked into this business for the first time in my life, I was not greeted but berated by the clerk for not wearing a mask.. I felt humiliated so I left and never came back. So I went in looking for a back issue of Futurama, and while they didn't have it, they had an amazingly deep selection of all kinds of comics. I picked up a couple that would've been about $15 total, but when I went to pay he told me it was cash only. I had just $6.60 in my pocket and despite that, he just said "they're yours for $6.60, happy holidays". That alone made it worthwhile of a visit, but the overall welcoming nature of Steven Riddler made it a rare gem of a comic shop since most are populated by unfriendly proprietors. Visiting Vegas, I went in and dug through boxes, pulled a handful of issues with some duplicates, and was about to bring them to the register, when the owner approached me and asked what I had. I handed him the books and he told me that he would not sell me multiples of each issue "so I could turn around and sell them on the internet," and accused me of trying to take advantage of him by buying them for cover price. I told him I would be happy to hear what he was asking for them, in response to which he told me he would not be selling me any comics today. BYW, books are unpriced, and there is nothing posted about limited quantities per customer. Absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. read more

Went here a few times. Steven was nice to me for every visit. I was at the shop looking at the vintage displayed on the cases. I find it satisfying that he lets you look through the book, and he grades it on the spot if its not graded. I noticed his store was alot cleaner compared to my first couple of visits after they moved from the old shop to this shop. And he prices vintage books at book price or less. This shop is good enough to make me visit again. Oh yea, Cash only. I dont mind that. read more

Remember when I said that some Comic Book stores looked like a dork's basement blew up.....well this is it. ( and i mean it in a nice way.) It seems Velvet Underground has always been around....it's first incarnation was in a warehouse space over near the Fantastik Indoor Swap Meet. (and that little garage was way cool.) The newer space is tucked in a corner in a strip mall behind a Dojo and a Gay Bar. Such flavor. The owner (Steve) who will most likely ask you to call him the Riddler, is pretty AWESOME in that "I have a really weird uncle who likes comics" type way. There is sooooo much cool collector junk in this place! It's like going to a antique store that specializes in toys and comics. The Riddler has a little bit of everything. (new and old) And he's got his drums set up in the back....I've never seen him play them before, but how rad would it be to see a comic book store garage band hit it on the weekends. I'd be there, oh yes, I'd be there. But only if they're called "the Frodo's" or maybe "Jean Grey is Dead." read more
