What does one do when it's 95 degrees out in the middle of the day? Get ice cream of course (or in this case, gelato). Luckily Venchi was just a block away from where we got lunch so it was an easy choice. First of all: the interior is gorgeous for an ice cream/chocolate store. It feels like a bougie designer store but instead of handbags, there is just chocolate everywhere. Gucci meets Willy Wonka, if you will. I was able to taste test the tiramisu, which I opted to get in a small (child?) cup. I believe the smallest size only allowed one flavor, but my friend somehow got 2 flavors in hers... I really like the strong kick of coffee flavor in the tiramisu. This is not a wimpy "coffee" flavor either. It's a bold, rich Italian espresso coffee that you will definitely notice. The chocolate bits and chocolate coin on top added a nice touch as well. Lastly, if you don't finish your gelato at lightning speed I recommend the cup over the cone simply because it melts so dang fast, especially if it is crazy hot outside. read more

Came here right at opening time on a Saturday morning and there was only one person working while still trying to get everything set up a few minutes past 11am. He probably wasn't used to folks being there so early so it was a little slow to get our Gelato. A friend and I shared a two scoop which was a little expensive in my opinion, but it was very delicious and refreshing for the hot day. It really melts in your mouth and isn't too sweet overall. I also loved the chocolate pieces that came with it at the top. Having been to a Venchi in Italy, this one makes the experience feel somewhat authentic to the real thing. The chocolate along the walls and the huge variety was very similar to the locations outside the country. The chocolate was also well made and super delicious as well - rich too! I've tried their regular hot chocolate before so this time I tried the hazelnut hot chocolate. I like it without whipped cream since the whipped cream makes it sweet and I don't like it too sweet. I would recommend it without whipped cream so that you can actually taste their chocolate flavor. Also there was a QR code that you can scan and subscribe which sends you a free mini chocolate bar. I dunno..maybe good for tourists? We went to Venchi after a theater thing at around 10pm on a Thursday. They were medium busy, not crazy. We are vegan and asked if they had any plant based options and they said yes, and pointed to a board with five sorbet flavors. I asked if I could try the raspberry, and they said I had to order first. So we went ahead and paid $17 for two cones. Then the cashier told us to move along and wait for someone else to make our cones. So we awkwardly stood there while the cashier stared into space and the "cone guy" had an extended convo with some people ahead of us. Then a young girl who honestly did not speak enough English to fairly be judged in this customer service situation said she'd help us. While she tried to understand that I still hadn't decided on the two flavors because my request for a sample was rebuffed until I paid, the chatty ice cream maker kept telling us to move to the end of the counter. It was awkward..my partner commented that "once they got our money all interest went out the window ". I gave a pre-tip when I paid, so he may have been on to something there. Anyway, the girl now informs me that they only have two flavors, so that's what I'm getting. Not to be a whiner, but that's annoying. Ok, I hung out at an outdoor table outside of Venchi with my son, daughter in law and two friends from home (Maine) who happened to also be in the city. It was one of those nights when the city reaches out with a big warm hug; perfect dry, cool weather, an open table, music drifting out of an apartment window and the people passing by are smiling. The line inside was long and so I waited awhile before heading inside. Once I entered Venchi, I was struck by how beautiful and varied their chocolate selection was. After perusing a bit, I headed to the counter to ask about the gelato, which was true of about 100% of the other patrons entering as well. They seem to have a specialty of lining their cones or ice cream cups with chocolate before placing the gelato, but I just went with it straight up. Not sure if they do samples here, it was busy, so I did not ask and just went right to my all favorite, go to, pistachio. Once checked out, I headed back outside to the love and laughter. Everyone SAID they didn't want any gelato before I headed in, but you know how that usually goes...the pistachio was a smash hit, with a really deep pistachio flavor, creamy, sweet and perfectly salty. There were plenty of other flavors, some of which looked AMAZING, but I pledge allegiance to the Venchi pistachio. Get some ASAP! read more

I can't believe I never heard of this place! After having dinner with my cousins, we decided to check out the European chocolate and Gelato shop. I really craved something with caramel, so I looked at the chocolate selection at first but couldn't really find something that tickled my fancy. I also noticed that they had really good gelato options. For those who couldn't eat a cone, customers could order a cup that was coated in chocolate and caramel among a few other options. I ended up getting a small with the chocolate/caramel coating in a cup with the matcha/white chocolate gelato. To say that the gelato was a win is an understatement. I've never been to Venchi before but I've passed by here several times and during the day there is always a long line going across the sidewalk - at night the line is limited to inside the store. The gelato is on the pricier side so even a little can add up. There are a lot of different flavors and the staff is really friendly and you can try any/each flavor before making your final decision. The gelato in my opinion is ok. It's good - it's creamy, not too sweet. Depending on the flavor, the flavor has a good balance of strength. It's hard not to like Venchi. Seriously, someone will take you there and you'll be hooked. I'm surprised I held out this long honestly. I guess friends have been keeping this hidden from me Located in a cozy corner on the edge of the West Village the foot traffic this Venchi gets can contribute to a line during a cool summer's (or spring or fall) evening. This particular line, and as with anywhere in New York when people see others join a line they will too. You know, just because. The process of ordering at the counter, picking your cone and THEN the flavors (which are kinda hard to see while in line) was a little tricky for someone who likes to have their order memorized (me) so try and do as much in line as possible The dipped cone. For my first time, I opted for the Piedmont hazelnut cone, which is first dipped in chocolate and then encrusted with little hazelnut jewels. It provided some well-needed crunch around the cone...was it necessary? As someone who grew up with a "get a cup it'll be less messy" mom, not really. The flavors could also be savored in cup form And that's a good thing. The interesting, complex flavors were a hit across the board. I sampled my friend's dark chocolate and dairy-free raspberry as well as the pistachio. I would've liked to see more diversity in the dairy-free flavors as most were fruit based. The first flavor I got ( regular has room for two) was stracciatella (if you know, you know). It was smooth and light, with a good ratio of chocolate in there. Good morning, I had an awful experience. Me and my friend had stopped in for some gelato upon going in the line was kind of long so we decided to wait outside until the line got shorter. A worker had come out and let us know that when we were done that we should put the chairs exactly how they were even though we were sitting in them exactly how they were. Afterwards the line went down, so I decided to go in and get a coconut cone. I had to come outside to sit down with my friend and finish my cone. Afterward, the same worker who had already spoke to us about the chairs came out almost yelling at us being very disrespectful, saying how if we're not going to order anything that we need to leave because we're not allowed to sit down if we're not ordering anything, and I let him know that I did order something and that he could ask the other coworker or I could provide a receipt. He proceeded to say that we had not purchased anything and he has been out the whole time, even though he had entered the back room when I was purchasing and purchased with another person at the front. me and my friend were really shocked and taken aback because he was raising his voice very loudly at us, but said nothing to the other people that were sitting just a few seats away from us. Venchi offers delicious ice cream, and I've visited the West Village location multiple times. My last visit was on Friday, but today was particularly disappointing. We ordered two regular cones, one small cone, and one small cup. The serving lady was extremely rude, insisting that we could only taste two flavors for one regular cone and two more for the second regular cone. Venchi has never imposed a limit on tastings before, and this was the first visit for my parents visiting from India. They were shocked by her attitude and manner of speaking. She didn't even provide paper napkins. I've also visited Venchi locations on Broadway and in San Jose, and neither restricted tastings before choosing a flavor. Policy couldn't have changed since Friday when I was allowed to sample multiple flavors. If there's a limit on tastings, customers should be informed upfront. Venchi is a reputed gelato shop, and such behavior tarnishes its reputation. Given the high prices--$10 for a regular cup/cone and $7.50 for a small one--customers shouldn't be limited on tastings. Please address this issue to maintain Venchi's high standards. read more
