Diane and I were in San Diego on the eve of catching another cruise ship--this time en route to Hawaii and back on Holland America Line's Nieuw Amsterdam. So, we came here again for a delicious pizza dinner. I began with a Small Greek Salad which was very good, with ample Feta Cheese, but not at all small. Then Diane and I settled in to eat as much as we could of our respective one-size pizzas. She ordered a Ham Pizza with Extra Cheese. And I chowed down on a New York style pizza with six components: Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Ham, Pineapple, Tomatoes, & Green Peppers. It was divine, with a great cheese pull on top, and wine-based sauce underneath. Diane was very pleased with her choice as well. I washed down my pizza with unlimited Diet Coke, left by our waiter in a carafe. I have been frequenting this establishment since my college days in the '60s, and expect to continue doing so when in the San Diego area. Went for a date night and despite showing up about an hour before closing, they treated us kindly, food did take a bit but nothing exaggerating. This gem has been around 72 years. There is parking in the back and a few on the street. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Atmosphere is fun. The staff is great and helpful when picking out a dish. They do have the games on the tv and nice mix of music playing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Host hour is from 3-5pm. The booth tables are a little high. They have nice wine options including bottle, beer and margaritas. The margaritas are in a wine glass so not big, but the pineapple one is amazing. Very flavorful. The portions s are definitely enough for two or leftovers. We split the spinach artichoke dip which was flavored to perfection. The bread with it is the perfect mix. My friend has the chicken Parmesan in which she said the chicken is made like a patty which is great for the plate. I had the veggie lasagna. It does have pieces of artichoke. Whoa. Never reviewed? Welp, let me change that. Venice Pizza House falls into a certain type of pizza category that I also put a place like Filippi's into. You best believe, I'm a fan of this type of pizza and I don't care if it's "traditional" or not, it's just damn delicious. Bring. On. The. CHEESE. Yep, their pizzas are cheese heavy and the slices carry some serious weight to them. A few slices eat more like a meal than most places and if you don't finish it all, the next day it's almost even better, to me at least. I feel like Venice Pizza House is a place that's a bit less talked about and only really known to people who live in the area, but that's a bummer as they're a total sleeper to me when it comes to a good quality pizza. I can't speak to anything else on the menu but the pizza lives in a world that I know isn't for everyone, but it is for me. read more

My husband and I hadn't been to Venice Pizza House for ages when I noticed the great reviews they were getting online. So we decided to give it a try again. What a great experience! David, our server, was friendly and attentive. The food was as delicious and well prepared, just as we remembered it from years ago. So happy the new owners are sticking to the old recipes. My small combo salad was so big we couldn't finish it between us. And the calamari was as crisp and delicious as I remembered. My husband pronounced the Chicken Parmesan outstanding, and had enough left over for dinner tomorrow. We stopped in for lunch... Torpedo and some raviolis. I have been visiting this restaurant since I was a toddler. Have bought torpedos regularly but this time we stopped in to eat. This is what we received. Torpedo had three slices of thin meat (1 type of meat) and cheese. DIPPED in OIL! No vinegar at all. Three little slices of tomato and a lot of lettuce. This is not a torpedo. Sorry excuse for a torpedo and the worse sandwich I have ever gotten there. I was sick all night. I used to be your biggest cheerleader. Now you turned me off like the rest. Did you know that torpedo's have salami, ham, provolone or mozzarella, lettuce, tomatoes and Italian dressing? This is not a torpedo. Yeah the ravioli was ok but I got sick on the "torpedo" so I wont be back. So sad that you ruined your restaurant. Call Chef Ramsay...... you need help. Seriously. I'm so disappointed. Despite no expiration date on card, she was told the promo expired and was snarkily offered a new card. Really? Horrible treatment of a senior citizen. Tonight we went to Venice Pizza House and didn't actually have pizza. They had a Dinner for 2 special this week which featured a choice of appetizer or salad, two main dishes and a dessert for a special price. We chose the small antipasto salad for our starter and it didn't disappoint. I've always loved Venice's Italian dressing and it was clear that even though they have new owners that the recipes haven't changed. For our mains we ordered the Lasagna and Chicken Parmesan dinners to split. The lasagna can be ordered with meat or veggies and we ordered with meat. It was absolutely delicious and the cheese and pasta practically melted in the mouth. The Chicken Parmesan featured two nice size pieces of chicken breast and was covered in cheese. I found it a little odd they didn't give at least a side of spaghetti but there was so much food that it wasn't really needed. Both meals came with garlic bread which was toasted perfectly. Last was dessert and we chose the Limoncello Cake which was moist and refreshing but we ate it before remembering to take a picture. We really enjoyed the entire meal. Inside the restaurant was slower than I remember from years ago when I'd dine here on Sundays but it's possible it was just the night. We were greeted warmly when we arrived and our waiter was a young man who said his family owned the restaurant but that they still had the same cooks and nothing had changed. He was attentive and ensured we were taken care of throughout the meal. They had older sing along music on the radio and seemed to have quite a few carry outs while we were there. There is plenty of parking in back or you can try to grab street parking in front. I hope things will go well with the new owners because this restaurant has been here a long time and has solid Italian food and pizzas. read more

The meatballs and mushrooms were hidden underneath the cheese with the sauce so it was a little thicker pizza and was very tasty. We enjoyed it.
