James says that Carol has been a hair stylist for over 20 years. She is also a native of Venice, California. James had a little grey and his hair needed some trimming. Jameslooked okay before he came to Carol. However, when Carol finished he looked like a budding Hollywood star. His hair was soft to the touch and the color was great. The haircut and styling looked like it came from a Hollywood studio hairdresser. The salon has a cool funky vibe with original art on the walls. I felt very comfortable there. There is free parking in the back lot where it is marked for customers. I am still a loyal fan of Noori at Next Salon in Santa Monica, California. However, James has been a client of Carol for over 15 years. To make a long story short, James was happy and he looked adorable. this is a long overdue review... came here summer 2013 based on a killer deal I got from Lifebooker.com. I had a good experience for my first time ever doing highlights so i'd definitely recommend this salon. My only feedback -- the blowout after was pretty mediocre. My highlights looked nice but my hair looked dead (flat). i believe their regular prices aren't that bad (comparatively) since they are in the heart of venice and all. read more

The shop is clean, bright and welcoming. The products are top notch, and there's parking! Pedro Estevez, is a rock star! He's a gifted colorist, and can work well with wavy hair, which many stylists cannot. If you're not sure what you want, I encourage you to set up a consultation. He'll totally know what to do & how to do it! On my last visit, he took me from a shag to a bob and covered my roots. Check out the pics! Can't recommend him highly enough. Stopped in yesterday thinking it would be impossible to get a same-day appointment but was able to set one up for just a couple hours later! Susan was amazing -- helped me decide on a cut, and gave me highlights using their organic, ammonia-free coloring system which was AWESOME -- smelled great, left my hair feeling soft and conditioned, and didn't have that burning smell/sensation of bleach! I've been going to Venice West Salon since it opened. Actually, I followed Christine there from her two previous salons. I love Christine and I love the salon. I hate noisy salons; this one is quiet (except for when the blow dryers are going). The music is mellow. The magazine selection is great. And the women who work there are all super friendly. Cathy does great, painless waxing. I've come to consider them my friends. I highly recommend the place. And the free parking and location two blocks from the beach are terrific. read more

I needed a haircut and a keratin treatment really badly. After seeing a deal for just a haircut at Venice West Salon on Lifebooker, I went ahead and emailed Sue Putnam to ask about getting both done. Sue couldn't have been nicer, and after asking a few quick questions about my hair, offered me a great deal on both together! She was great - I was able to set up my entire appointment and get all my questions answered via email. Sue even told me to park in the back - not to bother with the meters. The salon is clean and charming, great magazine selection (super important) and you have a great view of Main Street. My keratin treatment took 3 hours and Sue was super careful. As for the haircut - she's a stylist who asks what you want and then actually listens! I told her I wanted all my split ends chopped - she confirmed that I'd actually be cutting a good couple of inches off - and then did a good job of updating my basic layers and making sure I was happy with the length. My hair looks healthy and frizz free now. So happy to have found a great West Side salon with reasonable prices! read more

Just got back from the Venice West Salon and got an amazing, medium-length shaggy do from Susan. Exactly what I wanted!! I am so sad that it took me 7 years of living in Santa Monica to find out about her. I had long boring blah Marsha Brady locks and now I have a cool new look! The salon is unpretentious as others have noted here but then you are not paying for all the fancy shamcy decor you get at other places. Free parking in the back. I loved the haircut I received from Susan. She did exactly what I asked, but definitely offered sugggestions that were awesome. My college daughters also got wonderful cuts from her which shows she is great with all ages and hair lengths. Oh how I love Carol for my hair! She's a great listener and ultimately gives exactly what I wanted only better. The atmosphere is relaxed, this not an uptight LA salon -- there's no cappuccino or champagne, just beautiful hair. My entire family ended up there and we won't go anywhere else. Booked an appointment on Lifebooker for this salon. I called to check the location and work out what the parking was like and was happily informed parking was free behind the salon. I turned up 10 mins early for my appointment to be disappointed! When i arrived the Ladies at the front desk said that that i did not have an appointment which was not true as i had the email conformation on my phone. Then the lady who was meant to be doing my hair cut said that she could not do it and had already accepted another client, she also had clients after that. She then informed me that she had not confirmed the appointment which meant that it did not exist which again was not true, i showed her my conformation email, she persisted in saying that it was not confirmed and turned into a ridiculous discussion of I'm right and your wrong. She even went on to say that she does not blame me!!- i should hope not!! I left the salon then to receive a phone call saying that actually she had worked out that i had booked the appointment correctly and if i want then someone else could do the appointment. As 20 min had passed i was far away from the salon and it was hassle to go back. I ended up going further up Main street to Lorraine colour bar and had a great experience with Patti, they also do a big discount on your first appointment. Sue has taken excellent care of my dark brown locks for the past several years. I sought her out after discovering that she's one of the few hair stylists in the city who uses Organic Color Systems. Their products don't contain ammonia & they're better for the environment, as well as the health of the client (me), & the health of the stylist (Sue). WIN! The color is fantastic & long-lasting. It covers my (many!) greys, while keeping my hair smooth & soft - it never looks or feels 'processed.' There is absolutely zero eye irritation or stinging/burning of my scalp - & no nasty smells. YAY! Sue is also great with hair cuts - I've yet to leave her salon disappointed. Even my (very picky) mother insists on having Sue cut her hair, whenever she visits me from out-of-state. Although the woman who cut my hair was nice, I was disappointed with the way it turned out. At first, I thought that it was satisfactory, but as it grew out slightly the shape was funny. My most recent visit to a new salon confirmed that my hair was uneven, the right side a half inch shorter than my left side. A friend of mine just said to another- more of an acquaintance of mine- about me and right in front of me, "She's picky." I couldn't really be embarrassed, since it's true! I love going to calm, skilled Susie for cut and color. I trust her instinct and talent with all the nuances of both, and have never left there upset or disappointed. Never an off color, always a great cut whether I ask for what I want or I let her be the inspired artist. It is downright scary to put your head in someone else's hands! I have always been perfectly thrilled walking out of there, and not just on that first day after the stylist has fussed with my hair. One can park in the back for free (be careful- there are some signs reserving a few spots for some of the other shops there), or meter park, usually right out front. As a matter of fact, I have a text history with her going back a couple of years and it's been my diary of sorts as to when I last had color or a cut- helpful and easier than a file at a salon, for me anyway.
