I would like this place a whole lot better if they got rid of the fly issue. The last time we were there I could not finish my meal because I was so disgusted with the flies. Food is good, but not good enough to return if they don't get that fly problem under control. It just seems dirty. They need to shut it down for a day or two and fumigate, fumigate, fumigate. Went here as an alternative to the original place we were heading to. Hey, we're in Texas. Let's get BBQ instead. The place doesn't look like much of anything from the outside and as you walk in you realize it is very casual. It has a picnic/park shelter feel, but is clean and kept up. You order from the counter and find a spot. Everyone in the group gave it rave reviews. I had the 1/2 Chicken and although they wouldn't let me order just the back half, I found it to be Great! The sauce on the side (as it should be) was very good. Good Mac and Cheese and Fries. I'll try to find a way to go here again if I am close. We eat at Vernon's often. I think that their sides are pretty good, especially the pinto beans. They are actually my secret to my chili I make at home. Also, this might not sound good to everyone, but I absolutely love their half chicken because it's flavored well but mostly because it tends to be dry. Sausage is amazing and my fiancé loves their brisket baked potatoes. Also, I've had an issue where my son had an issue with his food and they noticed and fixed it without us asking. Parking is plentiful, interior is clean and simple. Bathrooms are outside around the back of the building which can kind of be a pain depending on the weather. Good value and above average BBQ! Ok, so I liked the vibe of Vernon's. You could tell, all the patrons with the exception of myself were regulars - usually a good sign. Also, the old faded Polaroid's stapled to the walls along with old award type accomplishments mean that this has probably been a Conroe/Montgomery institution for a number of years. Plus, they give you a free bucket of peanuts - that is bonus points in my book! Their menu is pretty expansive, which including tamales strangely enough. For my first trip here, I wasn't going to stray too far off the beaten path. I decided on the daily special which was their chopped beef sandwich with two sides and a drink. I know, I usual start with the sliced beef in some form, but penny pitching side of me thought $8.50 for this lunch special (which included tax) was a little too good of a deal to pass up. The amount of food was generous. I would certainly call my sandwich larger than normal. However, chopped beef didn't blow me away with flavor. It had a lighter smokiness, with a sweeter type sauce. It did not have that spicy aspect that I like in Texas BBQ, but overall I would consider the flavor better than average. The coleslaw was not my favorite, probably because it was on the sweet side. Don't get me wrong, some people love their slaw like that - but it's not for me. I would compare it to a rougher chopped, Chick-fil-A type coleslaw. The Pinto Beans were cooked perfectly and had a great texture, but I like them to have a little kick/spice and these were on the mild side. Also, I hate to say this but I think they could have used a little salt. The value is pretty good, so I will likely come back to give their sliced beef a try or grab a quick lunch when I am up at the office. read more

I ordered the loaded baked potato with a side of green beans. The baked potato wasn't bad. It was definitely loaded. I added extra BBQ sauce to my chopped beef so I can't speak on how the meat actually tasted on its own. Now the green beans were disappointing to me. I'm used to green beans being packed with flavor. This is what I thought I would get when the cashier described the ingredients. She said they were made with bacon and jalapenos, which added flavor, but not spice; but when I ate them, I got a lot of burned pieces of the fat of the bacon strip, no jalapenos or any flavor to them. I had to add salt and pepper and they were still pretty bland. The food came out quickly and the staff was nice. I'd return for a potato, but I'm skeptical of the sides. read more

On a drive back from all that is lame about a mall in the Houston suburbs, we decided we'd hit up this roadside BBQ joint. It's near a lake so gets a lot of business. Though the line to order was long, it moved rather quickly. (Though there are lots of tables and someone brings your food out, everyone orders and pays at the counter.) My husband and I split a two-meat two-sides plate (~$9) and got ribs, brisket, mac n cheese, and potato salad. All was great, the potato salad was excellent. The mac n cheese is the type that's almost soupy b/c it's so cheesy. Both ribs and brisket came out with sauce on top, but not slathered and certainly not cooked in sauce (so you can probably ask for it without or on the side if you're anti-sauce). The atmosphere is what you would expect for a roadside family-friendly place: not institutionally clean, but not dirty. There are picnic tables set up throughout, some with benches others with chairs. There are some video games and a pristine shuffleboard -- all of which can entertain you as you wait for your food to be plated up. The place is almost worth coming to just to play shuffleboard. Man, that's a nice shuffleboard. They have appealing lunch specials, which might just encourage me to make the drive out on a weekday. Friday has fish tacos + tamale. Not your typical BBQ special, but I have a feeling they would pull it off well. read more

OMG. A BBQ place both my husband and I liked. The ribs were so good and virtually no fat. "Brisket...put it on bread...I dont think so....nothing to take away from the flavor. This place is the most average BBQ out there. If you want some BBQ that is not good or bad, this is the right place for you. If you catch their food getting straight out, then they are decent. If you like brisket very well done you will love theirs. The good- Fried Jalapeños, the burgers, fried pickles, sweet tea, and free refills. The place is very clean and has a great country feel to it. Very nice and friendly staff. I ordered the 1 meat 2 sides plate which consisted of seasoned potatoes and potato salad. The potato salad and fries were delicious! Now on to the main course, the sliced beef. The meat was very touch, chewy. It had has an odd flavor. If you know me , you know I love bbq enough that I will still eat chewy brisquet. I couldn't take more that 3 bites before I made my Husband trade me for his burger lol. The burger was awesome! The brisket sandwich was better than I thought despite some of the poor reviews on their barbeque meats. Went back a second time for the baked potato topped with brisket. I expected a bigger potato with a bit more meat for seven dollars but it was lacking. The better baked potato would be across the street at Vernon's Kuntry Catfish. After driving past this place a dozen times and thinking it looked neat from the outside, I decided to give this place a try. The menu is great and the food smelled wonderful, however I'm not sure I will ever go back. I ordered fried mushrooms and jalapeno poppers as an appetizer for my family and I, pulled pork sandwich for myself, and mini corn dogs for the kids, I paid for our food, and we sat down. After waiting for over an hour for my food and watching people come in, eat their food, and leave the restaurant, I decided to go up to the cashier and ask where my food was. You ready for this?? The cashier had set my order ticket under some papers and LOST it!! Having waited that long with two small children, I was furious. All of the meat was excellent. The BBQ sauce was good, not too sweet. The fried okra was really crispy. They use peanut oil. I didn't care for the potato salad but I'm really picky about potato salad and usually only like my own anyway. The tea is fresh brewed and really good. The price is reasonable compared to other restaurants. It's so good we got some brisket to take home for dinner tonight. The restrooms are very clean. Free wifi to boot!!! I have been eating brisket sandwiches at Vernons for years. Something bad is going on here. Got the brisket sandwich fries and green beans. The brisket had absolutely no smoke flavor. This place is beautifully positioned on the side of the road, a really great setting. The meats are good, but the sides not great. The potato salad and pinto beans are the dullest. BTW, when are BBQ joints like this that are in the 'Kuntry,' going to start serving freshly baked bread instead of Industrialized, mass produced breads that contain enzymes, bleach and additives.
