A few months ago we visited Vernon's for the first time in a few years. We remember it as being a surprisingly good place considering the unimaginative building and decor. However, this time the food tasted quite flat - probably the oil they use, which in this case might have been old. The crust on the catfish and fries felt a little dull and maybe even dirty. And the catfish itself was not as fresh and firm as we remember. We might have caught them on a bad night or things may have slid, but we probably won't be back for a while. read more

Food was its usual... really good! but the service was not good at all. Our waitress appeared inexperienced and when asked for advice on a dish said "I don't like fish so I don't know but others say it is good." They were not overly busy for a late lunch but the service was haphazard at best. We still enjoyed ourselves until we got to the register where clearly we were an interruption to the two ladies at the register. I was in town for the weekend and had the taste for something fired. Gave Vernon's a try. The fish was fired perfectly and if I have one knock about the place was that the fish could've had some seasoning added. The service was great the sides were great, I had fried pickles they were great. No don't be turned off by my comment about the fish and seasoning, I would go back to this place in a heartbeat, I added hot sauce and used the tartar sauce and flavor issue fixed. Always like to try where " the people" eat. I can see the draw, big portions, fried southern cooking, decent prices. I had the seafood gumbo anticipating this close to the coast it might be amazing-huge disappointment. Not good. Wife had catfish, decent flavor but as some have commented, salty. Huge portion of fries. Side dish of pinto beans were a little undercooked to my liking. Like a slight crunchiness. Bleh. Sister had the chicken fried steak. Huge portion very good and hot, but the sides were just warm. Like they were plated and waiting while the CFS cooked. Speaking of sides, the potatoes were real not out of a box or bag. Green beans were ok. Unlimited hush puppies and green tomato relish. The relish was way more sweet than I'm used to, almost syrupy base. Honestly, tasted like they buy it. Hush puppies were decent, served hot, with mild jalapeño flavor. We shared a piece of "the good pie". It was good, but meh. The service was great. Our waitress Mikelah was fast and efficient. This is a longtime establishment with a great history of giving back to the community and truly being a center of calm in a storm. Even when they flooded, they kept the doors open and donated fish to those who were out and about in exchange for just tips for the waitstaff. It truly was a beacon in the night for all those in need. unfortunately, I guess that they are still recuperating financially from this loss because my mother and I used to share a three piece fish dinner and would each get a piece and a half. Now a "Three piece dinner," comes with two pieces each cut in half (see pic). I will continue spending my money at the various Vernon's locations and hope that I am able to contribute enough that they are able to get back to their old standards of full pieces of fish. Maybe a note in the menu explaining the change? Or just change the menu to "Two piece dinner," of that's the new norm? I'll update this post to reflect any changes that I become aware of. read more

This is some of the best fried catfish we've ever eaten! (Sudie's in Pasadena, runs a close "second"!) Their coleslaw is finely shredded and has a slight "sweetness" to its taste, just like I prefer it to be! Their "loaded" baked potatoes have always been fresh and "fluffy"! They offer fried green tomatoes, as well as pickled green tomatoes, along with other sides. (check out their online menu for their full fare) And finally, if you're not too stuffed, their key lime pie runs a really close "second" to Pappa's Seafood's key lime pie, which, in my humble opinion, is the very best I've ever tasted! I highly recommend the drive up to Conroe, if you have the time, and are so inclined, to enjoy this restaurant! Their servers have always been sweet, kind, courteous and cordial. Take I-45 North to the Hwy 105 exit in Conroe, take a left (westbound) under the I-45 freeway and set your odometer for 4 miles "exactly", and you'll see the red & yellow sign for Vernon's Kountry Katfish on your left. They have a very roomy and large dining area, and there's very rarely a very long wait to be seated. read more

Love this place! The hush puppies with the tomato relish to start off with are just delicious. The cat fish has the perfect breading to fish ratio. Service was exceptional. At the end of our dinner, our server asked us "if you came back, would you order the same thing?". I have never been asked that before but I think it was a great question to ask for feedback! I just left the restaurant, I wasn't very hungry and I ordered a Cat Fish sandwich, boy that was the worst I ever had. The bun was cold out of the refrigerator and it was like a sponge, the cat fish was 2 small and very thin pieces mostly corn meal ant the fish been so thin it was very dry. I would of been better off to get a fish sandwich at McDonald's for half the price and you can see the fish! At the cashier I was asked how was it? I responded terrible, the answer was...I HOPE YOUR DAY GETS BETTER! I answered my day is fine, your food need to get better. With the attitude from the cashier I will not go back any time soon. PS I asked for tartar sauce and charged me .50 cents for it....not at McDonald's. I have been eating here for years and the food has been good. Extremely disappointed. Placed our order for pickup and it was ready in ten minutes but the food was barely warm, the fries soggy and the flavor BLAND. Either the fish was overcooked or had been sitting, it was barely mediocre. The coleslaw was good, the pinto beans were left out of our order, so ... Pros: Catfish was decent. Cons: sides were served cold. The waiter did not know what fresh green beans were. So, I was served canned green beans that were cold. I drive by this place all the time and have been meaning to give them a try. I have tried their bbq place across 105 and liked it. So came here on a Tuesday evening and gave it a go. Had the catfish with fries, beans and coleslaw. Kids has the kids burger and catfish. The good was: Service was good and the atmosphere is tidy and clean. The coleslaw was tasty. The not so good: Catfish was average at best. I'd compare it to furrs cafeteria maybe, but not as good as lubys. Nothing like catfish parlor or a decent soul food joint. The fries were cold. This was strange I though but all three meals had fries and all three plates had cold fries. The burger must not have been good as my son had two bites and didn't eat anymore. To be fair it came fully dressed and my son doesn't care for mustard and all the vege. I forgot to mention it to the waiter and she didn't ask. I hate to give a local, non-chain restaurant a poor review, but unfortunately my experience was not good. Maybe I'll give it another try someday, but not anytime soon. read more

Wow! It was amazing! I couldn't decide what to keep eating. The pork ribs were so delicious and the fried fish was fantastic. But my favorite was a biscuit. Finally found a place that knows how to make a good biscuit. We all loved the food and will definitely be back when we come back through Conroe. read more

Do not go here if you are ordering takeout! The prices listed online are not the prices they charge! When I called to speak to the manager, she had the "oh well" attitude and admitted they just had not gotten around to updating the increases. She refused to honor their menu prices posted on their own website. I don't know what is worse the overcharge or the managers intolerant and dismissive attitude towards their once faithful customer. Well, they have really good hush puppies and pickled green tomatoes. And they come free. Now the bad news. Canned veggies made to pass as fresh. Doesn't work on the green beans and differently not on the corn. So I ordered the baked potato...it was steamed in Aluminum foil. Nothing fluffy and baked about it. The " Katfish" I think was tilapia but not sure. I used to get thick, lovely " Catfish" here although it was always heavy on the cornmeal breading. In years long past, my husband and I came here and enjoyed the food somewhat. I husband loved heavily fried food. I feel it was partly what killed him. Cancer. Did I mention the desserts? There's not much to mention there either. They'll be happy to know, I won't be back. I'm amazed so many elderly people keep coming here----it's not cheap for what they serve. The food was good, heavy on the starches (fries, hush puppies, corn bread, fried okra, and a pile of pies for dessert). The fried catfish was dusted with bread crumbs and not a heavier batter. The broiled catfish was reasonable but felt a little under done. They both felt under spiced, but there were plenty of things to spice it up.
