Let me start by saying that 4 stars is pushing it. I'd give the place 2.5-3 as far as the wine, but 4 for the service and the friendliness of the woman in the tasting room. The vines are pretty dismal-looking this time of year, but it's still cool to be able to go to a vineyard out in Contra Costa County and just relax and try free--yeah, the sign says $.75 for samples of certain wines, but when you buy a bottle, your tasting is FREE--samples of liberal size. From Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon, Viano has a pretty wide range of wines, ranging from $4 a bottle (their Hillside Red & White, neither of which I was very impressed by) to a little under $20 (Late Harvest Zins, etc). To say I wasn't expecting more from the wine would be a lie, as I was very impressed with the Zin I get at Concord Costco for $5 a pop. It may not be the best Zin I've ever had, but for $5, it's freakin' delicious. Unfortunately, I think that may be their best offering. The Lodi and Sandcreek Zins, which were over twice the cost of the other Zin, weren't as tasty, and the other wines I tried (Cab, Chardonnay, etc) didn't particularly excite me. The Petite Sirah especially was a letdown. HOWEVER, I'm going to be going back. I got a $15 bottle of Cab that, at 10 years old, is described as "earthy," but smells to me like feet and mushrooms. But not in a bad way. Overall, this is a friendly, unpretentious winery that's great for people who want to cut costs. What more do you need? read more

My girldfriends and I came for a wine tasting. It's a cute little place with friendly family staff. The wines were a bit too pricey for my taste and the surrounding area is nothing to look at but I like to support family businesses. I did get some red wine vinegar. It was a good sized bottle and the price was very fair at $5. The owner did warn me that it's a very strong vinegar and unfortunately, he was right. This is probably the strongest vinegar I've tasted. It was too strong to use as an Italian salad dressing like I wanted. Now I'm not sure what to use it for. My suggestion would be to tone down the vinegar just a bit and maybe watch the wine prices if they want to get a bit more business from word of mouth. Otherwise it's a nice little hop outside of downtown Martinez and a fun thing to do after lunch with the gals. read more

Decided to visit the winery in Martinez and tasting room. tasting fee is $5 to taste 5 wines and if you purchase a bottle they don't charge for the tasting. but to our surprise the girl who was serving us was giving 1/2 oz , you can get 3 very small sips out of it. if you are paying $5 for tasting and you get 50 ml of wine tasting that is a rip off. we bought few bottles. and again to my surprise when I compared the price at the total wine each bottle was $3-4 cheaper at the store, so they ultimately got the tasting fee out of me. not planning to visit them again , I will buy their wines at the store. read more

Our first few visits were very pleasant. Paula and her daughter were always friendly and welcoming. We purchased wine, including cases, on every visit. We decided to rent the picnic area for a birthday party. Paula went over our options with us. We had the option to purchase wine, or purchases tastings for our guests. We decided to just purchase wine and pour our own wine. Paula explained the only 2 rules- no children and no kitchen access, which we agreed to. Paula helped took our wine order and we were good to go. We had a pleasant time at our party. The area was clean when we arrived to set up for our party. Paula wasn't there, but Vicky and Jon were. At the end of the party, several of our guests told us that Vicky had told them that party guests were not welcome in the tasting room. Vicky told them that we (the party hosts) had already purchased wine and that the tasting room was only open to paying guests. Now, our guests intended to pay for their tastings. As a matter of fact, many opted to purchase wine despite Vicky's rude behavior. A few days later, my husband called to speak to Paula, but spoke to Jon instead. My husband asked for clarification as to why Vicky was so rude to our guests, who were willing to give them business. He responded by saying, "THATS BULLSHIT!". That's all we had to hear. We will never return, needless to say. Our family and friends will not return either because of the awful way they were treated and bad impressions cannot be forgotten. read more

First, they have these two dogs that you can play with. They bring a little ball in their mouths to you so that you can play fetch. Endless fun for those of us without pets to play with at home. Their wines are very good. I went to a few other wineries in Sonoma before this, and the wines that Viano had were more subtle in taste which I preferred. Their wine tasting is $5 for 5 or 6 wines, and the prices of their wines are very attractive (one of them was $6.50 I think). The staff is very friendly and easy to talk to, and it's a small shop so you really get an individualized attention when you are asking questions and ordering. I went in with little knowledge of wines and a million questions, and they treated me like a friend. I would say this is probably not what you are looking for if you want to impress your visiting friends by taking them to a fancy winery filled with sommeliers and guys in polo shirts. There are dozens of $$$ wineries in Napa and Sonoma that are perfect for those occasions. This is a $ winery in Martinez, and it's probably the best in class. read more

One of Martinez's best kept secrets is Viano Winery. The price is unbeatable ranging from $6.50 to $18. This is family owned and operated, with gracious and polite pourers. The wine is all enjoyable and easy to drink. The port is our family's favorite as it is not overly sweet and easy to enjoy after dinner. The grounds are also quaint and the rolling vineyards hills make for excellent photos. They have outdoor seating and two dogs that are always up for a game of fetch. read more

Was here for a birthday party. I was really enjoying the Rose wine so was talking with my cousin, who was hosting the party and he told me that they had wine tasting in the little house. Went into the tasting room to see about trying the red wines, with it being very hot at the party did not want to have a full glass of red wine. Was told that they did not do tastings for people at a party. WHAT THE HELL. Told them I was willing to pay for it and got the same answer we don't do tastings for people at the party. Ok, really dumb thing.....since I was planning on buying a case of the Rose and some wine for my cousin who was the birthday girl. My friends and I go wine tasting all the time and can tell you that I will never go back there or recommend them to anyone. This is a small family run winery hidden in the sleepy town of Martinez. Their tasting room is on the left as you pull into the driveway. If you're lucky, you'll get to play fetch with the resident dogs. As you enter the tasting room, there's a small bar counter in the far corner. Shelves of wine and accessories are on display. This place is unpretentious and humble. It's a lovely laid back place which I hope never becomes as impersonal as the larger Napa wineries. I love this place. They offer a Personal and private collection. The most expensive is $18. Great value for what you get. My favorite is their Reserve port. It's like no other and if you like a fruity but not boozy port, this smooth liquid will fix any bad day. I'd recommend their wines - very affordable both as gifts and every day accompaniments! read more

The first stop on an East Bay wine tour, Viano seemed a little unsure what to do with the 5 of us when we showed up at 11am. Service was initially adequate, with standard small tasting pours. When we started talking about buying their VERY affordable wine by the case, however, her smile got larger, as did the size of our tasting pours. Out came the reserve wines also. The standouts were certainly the inexpensive house red and white table wines ($4/bottle) and the Late Harvest Zinfandel. By the time we left, I think we had 15-18 bottles of wine collectively, plus 2-3 bottles of wine vinegar. At $1.99 a bottle, those last were simply too good to pass up. There are some picnic tables tucked onto a patio beside the tasting building where you can bring a picnic and drink while looking out over the vines. Looks ideal for spring/summer/fall. Bonus: If you're in the market for a REALLY big bottle of wine for a party, they have a few of theirs available in the uber-large sizes: Jeroboam (3L), Methuselah (6L), and Salmanazar (9L). I didn't see a Nebuchadnezzar (12L); maybe Nebuchad-next time! TRIVIA: For unknown reason, a Jeroboam of champagne or burgundy is 3 liters, while a Jeroboam of Bordeaux is 4.5 liters. (A 3-liter bottle of Bordeaux is a "double magnum".) read more

Good + Cheap = return visit As DD on EBWT II, I had to wait to write a little review love for Viano. I have driven by this place countless times, and always told myself I should stop by sometime. Well, it happened. Yay for me. I am enjoying the Hillside Red as I write, and I must say....how much was this?? Wow, can't be that cheap. This is great. It's a table wine that went well with my Chicken Florentine Panini. The wife was wise and picked up a few other bottles to sample over the next few weeks. Huzah! This is the little winery that could. It's right off HWY 4, down Morello, just before the rail road over-crossing. It look like a house with vineyards all around, but keep going. That little tasting room off the gravel driveway is where you want to be. I didn't spend a lot of time inside, but is was quite spacious. Among the many wines available, you may find some other seasonal nuts and maybe fruits. They can also host parties with the outside picnic tables and grill. Please stop by and visit one weekend. It's easy to get to, very well priced, and lovely to drink. read more

Alright, for any of you who have seen my reviews of other wineries, please understand that this four-star rating is heavily weighted by the awesome tastnig room experience and reasonable price/quality ratio. Also, if I had stumbled on this place in sonoma valley it would have been a two-star, but this is Martinez. First off, they do a pretty darn good job with the italian varietals that they make and I love that I can go 15 minutes up the road and pick up a case of daily-drinker zin or sangio for about a hundred bucks. You're not going to get a paso robles quality zin or a sonoma coast pinot, but you're also only paying $5 to $15 a bottle versus $35 to $80. As for the tasting room, they are SO friendly and really make it feel like you stopped by a friend's house to drink a few glasses of wine. They are a bit difficult to find and you're not likely to stumble upon it on a wine trip (mostly because they're the only winery in the area). This place is great if you live in the area and like the idea of supporting local businesses. read more

a drunk diamond in the rough, Viano is a getaway you never knew was in your backyard. My brother took me to this winery having just recently visited it, and we rolled up on our bikes about 30 minutes before they closed on a sunday and they sold us a bottle of wine and let us sit outside, enjoying the sun, while they took care of other matters. we enjoyed the view, the sun, and each others company and no one came to bother us or force us to leave. we were mindful of the time they wanted to close and we put our glasses inside for them.... personally i dont want to get doted on when i go to a winery.. i just want some artisan experience and this family delivered! I see myself coming here often with friends and family instead of livermore, napa or sonoma as those places are all so over commercialized and their egos!! Viano has no ego... just a multigenerational winery, tucked away, and very unassuming.. top notch guys! read more

I'll keep this simple. My husband and I visited this winery--simply because it's in the area, got good reviews on Yelp, and the prices are evidently low. The winery and grounds are rustic, not froo froo. In fact, two sweet dogs each "greeted" us there. (We later hung out with the dogs as we ate our picnic and drank our wine, sitting on a huge boulder.) Because we purchased a more premium wine (about $12 and up), our tastings were free. Otherwise, I believe it's just $6/person, with keepsake glass. This vineyard is over a hundred years old, and beautiful. Totally worth picnicking there in good weather, and just taking in the views with your wine. read more

Viano is a fantastic local winery with great history and heritage in Martinez. Often times in the tasting room you can meet the founders son who now runs the place, and pop-pop's picture up on the wall. Their wines are fantastic and all reasonable priced. Took a friend a few weeks ago who sort of considers himself to be a wine snob. At first he wasn't expecting much from the low bottle price, but this guy ends up taking a mixed case home! We always keep a few bottles available at home, and I suggest you do the same! read more

This is a wonderful find tucked into the near industrial area of Martinez. You can find their zinfindel at the Concord Costco for $5, but their white wines are great for the price. The chardonnay is very buttery, and at $6 for a magnum, their table white exceeds pretty much anything even remotely in the price range. I think the tasting was either free or maybe a dollar, but waived with purchase. Their red wines are very light, so if you like a rich, oak-y red, I don't know if the will suite your fancy, but I did not sample their reserve wines. read more

Super cute winery tucked away in the hills of Martinez...it doesn't get much better than that. I'm no wine snob, but the stuff was tasty. We bought a case of the Hillside Red for only $48! The atmosphere was so much better than I would have imagined for a winery...I especially liked the three dogs protecting the doorway as we drove up! The owner's wife was pouring our tastings and was very nice and knowledgeable about the winery and about Martinez in general. We will be back as soon as our case runs out, can't wait! read more

A hidden gem! Its right on Morello Ave but if you blink you'll miss it. You would never expect to find a winery here right next to the railroad tracks, and within a stones throw of the refineries in Martinez, but it's there and its worth the search. When we visited the tasting room was deserted and unstaffed, but after a few minutes someone eventually turned up. Don't be discouraged. Someone will eventually come in to serve you! All of the wines we tasted were wonderful, but I especially recommend their Port. Seek this place out and you won't be disappointed. read more

So I learned about this wine from a good friend of mine. We were at a function and i had tasted this wine and he later told me that it was a local wine from Martinez. I decided to give the place a visit and inquire about some wine I needed for a banquet. The people there were super friendly and it had a down-to-earth feel that you just cant get in Napa Valley. I bought 8 cases of wine and got a great deal on it. It should also be noted that the wine was so good, I wouldnt have mind paying a higher price for it. Next time I go there I want to buy a bottle of their lemon infused olive oil and check out some of their dessert wines. This is an awesome local place that is fun to visit! read more
