I got cookie dough (which is mostly chocolate chip cookie dough chunks, the perfect ratio imo) and muddy mocha (coffee ice cream with chocolate swirled through it). It comes with fudge drizzled along the side of the cup, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry on top. I'd definitely get it again. The small was large enough for me to share -- but I can't eat too much haha, I'm a kiddie scoop girl. If you eat more, you could handle the small on your own or might order the regular sundae for sharing. Vic's has such a cute vintage diner vibe. So glad that Vic's is back! This is one of the Sacramento area's legendary ice cream spots- before I moved here I would always hear about Gunther's, Vic's, and Leatherby's. Vic's is very cute with an old school feel. They have a take out line and a dine in line and have tables as well as a little ice cream counter to sit at. They offer a good variety of flavors and they have some unique items on the menu as well as savory items for sale. On our recent visit we dined in with friends and had one of their little booth tables. Each couple ordered a hot fudge sundae and with that you get to choose up to two ice cream flavors. We chose their peppermint and chocolate mousse and it was a great combination. We also ordered their Lime Rickey which was delicious, it was very lime forward and tart without being bitter or too sour. It was also very refreshing- maybe not the best choice with our sundae but so worth trying. I'd definitely grab one of those for a hot Sacramento treat. We also bought a pint of peppermint ice cream to take home and were happy to enjoy it as an extra treat over the week. I've been coming to Vic's Ice Cream since high school, which for me goes a long way back, so I was honestly really excited to come back after the remodel.....and this one is hard to write because the ice cream itself was still delicious and exactly as good as I remembered. Unfortunately the service completely overshadowed the experience. The employee helping us was incredibly rude from the start, especially toward my daughter who is very shy to begin with. We were trying to decide on flavors and felt really rushed the entire time. At one point we stepped a little closer to the menu to read it better and she immediately snapped "don't sit down until I clean it." We explained we weren't sitting down and were just trying to read the menu, but she repeated herself again in the same tone. What really bothered me was how she interacted with my daughter. My daughter was trying to ask how big the scoops were and instead of just answering, the employee said something along the lines of "well is your daughter going to ask how big they are?" which honestly caught me off guard. I finally responded that she could also just tell us the scoop sizes. The entire interaction just felt tense for no reason. We were also shuffled around to different spots while waiting, and when I asked for a sample of the banana ice cream because I couldn't see it in the case, she pointed out it was behind her and then just stared at me until I awkwardly repeated that I was asking for a sample. She sighed before finally getting it. We stopped by right about the time I was getting dark lines weren't too long, but they had a steady full of customers. The workers are really nice. They were out of three of the ice creams that we wanted the peach the banana and one other I can't remember, which made us kind of sad. We came here about 30 minutes before closing on Mother's Day weekend and I was worried we would be *those* people showing up at near closing but to my surprise there was a line and a couple groups waiting for their orders. The employees were still smiling, working hard, and getting through all the orders so I appreciated that. The place has a very 1950/1960s vibe that's likely nostalgic for many. I noticed the glassware for banana splits on the booth tables which was such a gem to see, not just because of the vintage feel but also because it's less wasteful for our precious planet compared to plastic and paper cups. The ice cream scoops are generous! Coming from the Bay Area, I was shocked and elated haha. We all ordered different flavors. My mom had the mint chocolate chip ice cream which she felt was too sweet. My partner had the cherry amaretto and toasted almond ice cream, both of which were delicious except we both didn't like the almond pieces inside it. Glad to see Vic's is back and open again after a few years hiatus. I waited a few weeks after they officially reopened so the lines weren't as long. I went here on a weekend night about 20 minute before closing and waited about 10 minutes before I got to order. I got the cookies and cream and chocolate chip cookie dough. Ice cream is still as good as always and customer service was great. Inside still looks the same as before. There are booths you can sit and eat at or do counter seating. DINE IN :) Sunday afternoon at 330pm I would like to start with the positive :) Hubby and I shared the banana split- vanilla, coffee, rocky road and each one was just yummy. Even the husband said it's better than another ice-cream spot we have gone to. They were out of whipped cream which was a little disappointing :( The staff crew was friendly and attentive, our host (male) was super nice. What could have earned the 5th star?? I'm not a fan when a staff has to do multiple duties. I watched a young lady jump from cleaning a table, grabbing a wet towel from a red bucket to wipe the tables and counter, puts the towel back into the red bucket then goes to the ice-cream area to help the next customer without washing her hand. Now I understand that it was really busy and it may have just slipped her mind but then I watched another person make a sandwich - No gloves - to washing the dishes in the sink to then cleaning a counter of dirty dishes to attending to another customer. Made me wonder what she was doing before she made the sandwich and scooped a handful with bare hands of chips from the Ruffles bag that I watched her do. Clean duties and dirty duties shouldn't mix without proper handwashing in between or if possible, avoid all together. I would suggest that one person should be assigned the cleaning and not cross over to handle food. Hope the owner/manager sees this and approach my review with grace for I mentioned it with grace and make adjustments. To end on a good note because overall really enjoyed our visit and understand this establishment has newly re-opened with new staff is that this restaurant is located in a neighborhood and is more likely going to be if not already loved by the locals. I can't rate Vic's Ice Cream without also discussing Brew Bird, the replacement for Vic's Cafe adjoining Vic's Ice Cream, because the value of one is enhanced, or fails to be enhanced, by what the other offers. I was wobbling between three stars and four. As i wrote, I realized that I couldn't give Vic's more than three stars though I wanted to, out of sentiment. I'm delighted to have Vic's back - not overwhelmingly for the local tradition, though I feel some of that, but certainly for the convenience of an ice cream store and cafe at this location. I love ice cream though I don't eat it super-often. For the most part I've loved the flavors and the richness of the ice cream at the new Vic's. Also, they now have some non-dairy "ices." The mango, which I've had more than once, is splendid: creamy (how do they do that?) and packed with fruit flavor. The ice creams flavors are mostly what they should be. The flavor that missed the mark on one visit was the lemon, which was simply blah. Apart from the frozen treats, unfortunately, the new owners were enraptured with the idea of keeping the old Vic's menu. With the exception of a couple of prefab veggie burgers, this is straight=up 1950s fare - egg salad sandwich, hot dog, etc. The thing is, many of us don't eat this way now and there isn't much more on offer. Today, in desperation (next door for coffee with friends, hungry for an early lunch), I ordered the veggie burger and it gave me the necessary calories but was not more than blah. So many places do so much better these days. Ah, you say, but you can get more contemporary and appealing food in the adjoining cafe the way you could before Vic's closed, right? WRONG. The cafe next door no longer has as much of a food menu. They have very nice pastries, some really fun gourmet popcorn (the truffle is an inspiration), bagel/cream cheese, and now a quiche - sometimes with a choice of bacon or veggie though today no veggie. But gone are the wraps, the smoked salmon on bagel with a choice of cream cheese or avocado, the avocado toast, egg options at breakfast time. I asked staff about this and they acknowledged the issue but said the new owner has a "vision." Sadly, the vision doesn't start from an awareness that Vic's Cafe, just like Vic's Ice Cream, had become its own tradition and hub by the time it closed. It used to be lovely to be able to sit with a friend or a computer, good coffee or tea (more about that in a moment) and a light but pleasant lunch or breakfast. Adding to the frustration of not having a real food menu at the cafe, if the ice cream parlor is open and you want to wander over and get some (1950s) food to supplement your coffee or cafe snacks, you have to purchase it as take-out, generating environmental waste. At Brew Bird Cafe, the coffee is very good. I happen to be a tea drinker these days and, unfortunately, the owner's didn't see fit to continue the previous Vic's Cafe's excellent menu of fine teas. Fine tea does not mean funky blends. It means real tea, well sourced - green, jasmine, Earl Grey, Oolong, etc. And pure, honest herbal teas. On the herbal side, Brew Bird does have chamomile but other than that, the mint has green tea in it (so not really an herbal tea) and there's a strange ginger/turmeric blend. In other words, a notable dearth of non-weird herbal flavors. Since the new owner's vision purportedly includes homage to the old Vic's, it's too bad they didn't honor what Vic's Cafe did so well. On the bright side, now now you can purchase and paint unfinished pottery. On my most recent visit, people seem to be enjoying that - but it's an add-on, not what makes a great cafe. Vic's, are you reading this? You have a built-in, loyal following and I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, primarily for your location, but this project needs more thought. Really. read more

The ice cream didn't taste as creamy as it used to be. The scoops also appear to be smaller than before. I came in around 7:30 p.m. on a Wednesday evening. The place was pretty packed, with most of the seating occupied, but there was no line. When I walked in, there were about four employees behind the ice cream counter. They all saw me come in, but one girl immediately turned away and noticed the others did too. No one greeted me or acknowledged me. I had to wave someone down and call out just to get help. When ordering I felt rushed like I was making their job harder just by being there. Then a group of white customers came in and were greeted and helped right away. I also noticed I was the only non-white customer there at the time. Welcome back, Vic's! After more than a year closure due to a change of ownership and much-needed renovations, Vic's Ice Cream reopened to long lines of happy community members, even in spite of the rain. I arrived at 10:30am for an 11am grand reopening and there was already a line. People were reminiscing and looking forward to having Vic's ice cream again. It became a sort of community reunion as people saw those that they hadn't seen in a while at this community hub. By 12:30pm, I had ice cream in hand (a mini scoop of mint chip and a kiddie double scoop of Muddy Mocha & Pecan Praline) and it was delicious! It was definitely worth the wait. Here's a bit of info: a kiddie double is 2 mini scoops. For me, it is just enough for me to get two great flavors. It was a great time and I know I'm not the only one that is glad to have Vic's back as well as their café next-door, now dubbed Brew Bird. I was really excited to see that Vic's was open again, so I sent my boyfriend to grab me a banana milkshake. When I took the first sip, it tasted a little off. He mentioned that the bananas they had looked brown on the outside but wasn't sure what the inside looked like since he didn't watch the drink he made. I tried a few more sips, but it definitely didn't taste right, so I stopped drinking it. When I poured it out, I could see that the bananas looked old or possibly rotten. He also mentioned that the girl who took the order was the same one who made the milkshake and that she looked pretty frantic, probably because it was busy. My husband, my 6 year old and myself were out recently for Sunday Funday, and looking forward to visiting the newly reopened neighborhood gem. Although a briskly chilly day, the shop was still busy with customers. Initially, we waiting outside in line with a few other customers, then followed a couple in to wait inside where it was much warmer. After waiting in the stagnant line for about 5-7 minutes, my family was rudely commanded by JAYDEN to "wait outside" as we were a "disturbance" to the cafe patrons. My family and I were next in line and weren't even talking beyond asking each other what flavors looked good etc. So including my family, two other groups of people moved back outside and sort of meandered as nobody gave us any inclination as to when we would be allowed to come back inside. Had it not been Sunday Funday that he looks forward to weekly, we would have left after being ordered to wait outside by JAYDEN. It seems I stepped into a portal and traveled back in time to 60 years. I found myself in Vic's ice cream sitting at the counter. As a kid, I remember ordering drinks called the suicide, cherry or orange phosphate and the blue drink. It was pure sweetness, but now what I know today, I would probably go into a diabetic coma if I drank those drinks today. There were 5 people in the restaurant, so this wasn't a peak time to make mistakes and cause long wait times. Skimpy servings: egg salad sandwich is maybe 3 TB of egg, 2 slices of bread is $10. Hot dog sandwich is 1 hotdog - $10. Dirty food handling: the food was touching a wall. The food would fall onto the counters, and they would toss it back into the bin or add it back to the plate. The counters are not clean - cell phones laying on them. Dirty rags. Then the food sits on these areas. A man waited about 15 minutes to have ice cream packed. We came on a warm weekend afternoon so there was a bit of a line to the door but it wasn't that bad at all. It's just a tiny place inside so not much waiting room! They have tables and some barstool seating so we were able to sit inside luckily. There are a couple tables outside but not as many as inside, but at least they were in the shade. I decided to try the fresh boysenberry sherbet. I am assuming that means the other flavors are not fresh fruit? You could definitely see the little seeds in this flavor and it was so flavorful! I'm also a big fan of peach so I had to try that off of their seasonal menu. The cup shown in my photo was considered their single scoop but I was able to get the two flavors which was nice! My husband's butter brittle flavor was also delicious but unfortunately only a seasonal flavor as well. I definitely wouldn't mind coming back for a hand packed quart or half gallon to go! The food was very good, but the table service experience has a lot that needs to improve before we will come back for that. The person who was taking the orders, took an extremely long time getting from table to table. My wife asked for her sandwich order to have no condiments, but when her sandwich was brought to the table, it had mayonnaise on it, and the young lady said that the order did not specify that. I think that the shop needs to formalize their service structure so that not only are ice cream counter orders being handled well but also the table services being handled just as well. Hopefully this is just growing pains after their recent reopening, and not something that will continue into the future. read more

Welcome back Vic's! As a long time former employee, I was very nervous about any group being able to do the Old Vic's justice. The new ownership, Dave and new Vic's crew knocked it out of the park. The attention to detail on the interior, using the same dishes, keeping the classic menu... amazing. We were there later in the evening close to closing (very taboo because I know showing up the last hour sucks all around)... all the workers were working hard, smiling, sweating and polite despite the chaos of the continuous line of customers.
