We've been here a couple of times now, and love it. Arguably my favorite pastry shop/bakery in the city, please note that lines can get long. The staff are all cool though, but because of the foot traffic, they may have to be the bearer of bad news and tell you that by the time you pull up to the front, that stuff may be sold out. To ensure the baked good or dish you want is still available, heavily encouraged to get there early. Everything I've had here is delicious, and we haven't had a bad bite yet. While they are all delicious, arguably the standouts include the cherry pistachio almond croissants, za'atar Gruyére croissants, and lap Cheng and cheese scones. We had some of the dishes, and enjoyed them. The French toast is next on the list to try, and they look incredible. We'll be back again and again. read more

After hearing so many good things about Pastry Cat, we were excited to finally stop by. We were short on time, so we only grabbed a few pastries to go, but it looked like a nice space that had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We picked up the za'atar croissant, sweet corn scone, and miso brown butter cookie. Everything was nicely balanced without being overly sweet or heavy. My favorite was the za'atar croissant--the flaky layers paired nicely with the savory cheese and herby flavor of the za'atar. Despite a steady line, the service was warm, personable, and efficient, which made the experience feel very welcoming. My only small suggestion would be to offer the option to warm pastries, even for to-go orders. We ended up eating ours almost immediately on the way to our next stop, and I think a warm croissant would have elevated it to the next level. Really good bakery. I don't go to many bakeries, but I enjoyed almost everything here. My favorites were the Za'atar Gruyère Croissant. The spice was really good with the savory cheese. The Coffee Choc Croissant was super flaky and nice texture. Canelé also had a nice contrast in texture between the spongy inside and the slightly crispy outside, and it didn't reek of rum at all. Danish was solid and a nice sweetness level, Ham and Cheese also had a nice salty melted and crispy cheese and savory ham. I actually didn't like the matcha yuzu cookie that much, but it's a really spongy cookie. A line. I came at like 9, had to wait a bit. Nice place to sit and eat at. read more

I've tried Pastry Cat pastries when they had the pop up at Offbeat Coffee. The line is always out the door and often sell out on the popular items. When I heard they opened their own store in East Sac, I was excited to go check them out at their new home. As of right now, they are opened on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 AM to 1 PM. I stop by on Friday at around 11:30 AM and the place was packed. The line move pretty quickly but by the time I was in front of the counter, almost everything is gone with cookies and plain croissant left. Sigh~ I didn't want to leave empty handed and got the Earl Grey Brownie, Diamant sable, Chocolate Chip Cookie and Matcha Latte. Their Matcha Latte is probably one of the better ones I had in Sacramento. You can taste the matcha and it's lightly sweeten and smooth. The Diamant sable cookies were a nice treat. Not too sweet, light and buttery. I'm not crazy about the Earl Grey Brownie, even though I like Earl Grey tea. It's not doing it for me. They also serve lunch from 11 AM to 1 PM. The braised pork rice bowl sounds good. I hope to try the Black Sesame Almond Financier and Cherry Pistachio Almond (or one of their seasonal) Croissant next time and will have to aim to get there at 8AM. Congrats to the owners- from pop-up to storefront. The location is located within a cute neighborhood. My friends managed to come on a Friday, so parking wasn't too bad. There wasn't a line either, but I would say it was busy. After ordering, we sat at the bar since all the tables inside were taken. Luckily, we saw a table open up after our pastries were delivered. My name was shortly called to pick up our drinks. While the rice bowls (lunch) sounded good, we decided to order a few pastry items to share. My favorite was the ham & cheese pain suisse- flaky. I also enjoyed the cherry pistachio almond croissant, but wish for more pistachio flavor. The salted honey croissant bun and miso brown butter cookie that my friends picked were just ok. We stopped into Pastry Cat for the first time, on a late Sunday morning. My girlfriend was familiar with the owner back when they bothe had pop-up shops, and did events at the same location. Once we arrived there was a small line out the door which we assumed would move rather quickly so we decided to wait. Because Pastry Cat is still in the soft opening phase, there was a limit on pastries per customer which was noted on sign inside & outside of the establishment. Ultimately we waited maybe 30 minutes in total before it was time was us to order inside, and we ordered the following: Coffee: Vanilla Latte (hot) Vanilla Latte (iced) Pastries: Vanilla Rum Canele Matcha Yuzu Almond cookie Miso Brown Butter cookie Chocolate Chip cookie We originally planned to have coffee and a biscuit breakfast sandwich and a French Toast plate and then taken some pastries home. But theu were out of the biscuit sandwiches, so we just oped for the coffee and took the pastries home for the family. Pastry cat is no longer just a pop-up at your local farmers market and other places, it is a true brick and mortar location. Located in East sac/Sutter Park, it definitely has that neighborhood feel to it. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and people bring their leashed pets to sit outside. Both indoor and outdoor are pretty limited with seats, so keep in mind. You may need to get your treats to go. You stand in line, and from what I can tell, there is always a line, to order at the counter, and then your items are brought to your table. Many of the items are on their regular menu and they do have seasonal items such as the cherry pistachio croissant that was being offered. They only had one offering of a breakfast Sando, and I was hoping for more of a protein push, and they graciously offered to make just the patty for me. The patty had an unusual flavor. And almost tasted like they perhaps add cinnamon or something to it. Definitely not a fan. The Matcha latte was delicious and I had them add date syrup to it. This combo really made for a tasty drink. I really enjoyed the cherry pistachio croissant. I'm not a fan of pistachio and was hesitant to try it, but I'm so glad that I did. It definitely taste like hard work and love. The couple that own and run pastry cat are very present and you'll see them bringing food to the tables and interacting with their favorite customers. I love that it feels like a neighborhood location and we need more of these type of places throughout Sacramento. Such a great new restaurant. We came on a Saturday morning, and while there was a line they moved quickly. We ordered a variety of items, and will say the cherry pistachio croissant had to be my favorite. The flavors melted in your mouth and the croissant was super moist. It was busy, and seating was limited both inside and outside. While it wasnt crazy loud, you could hear the various conversations going on. Staff were super friendly and attentive too. I've been going to Pastry Cat's pop ups at Offbeat for a while. This place combines my love for cats and sweets. I love their pastries and the fact they buy local seasonal ingredients. They cater their menu based on what's in season and also use Asian spices frequently, which I love. When they opened a brick and mortar, I had to go visit. The space has an open kitchen and some seating, not ideal for big groups. There's also a little amount of outdoor seating as well. They serve hot breakfast and lunch too, so it's nice to see your meal being made with the open kitchen concept. Pros: fresh pastries need I say more? One of my favorites is their chocolate chip cookie, just the right balance of chocolate and salt. I love their seasonal croissants too. Cons: don't love the parking situation as it's near a neighborhood. There are other businesses nearby so parking isn't the easiest when it's busy. read more

I've walked out with plenty of pastries from Pastry Cat before and they're always so delicious and unique! My boyfriend and I were super happy when we found out they opened a storefront in East Sacramento. We skipped the soft opening as we knew it would be packed and most likely sold out (as they were and should be). We came this past Saturday around 9:30 am and there was a decent amount of people inside and on the patio. The line went by quick and we got our pastries and drinks in no time. We decided to get the zaatar gruyere croissant and salted honey croissant. We promised we were not going to walk out with a box filled this time. I loved how they added drinks, since my favorite thing is to have a coffee with a pastry. I tried their iced latte with date syrup and my boyfriend got an americano. I'd say the drinks are decent but nothing you have to go out of your way for. I will say $1 extra for the added syrup is a bit much for me, but I think they're all made in house. I couldn't really taste it in my coffee as it only added a settle sweetness. I did enjoy my iced latte but I would say it was more on the milky side. I didn't try the americano, but my boyfriend finished it and he didn't seem to have any complaints. I do wish they were the same size though, looks like the americano came in a smaller cup. Now onto the stars of the show, the pastries were great as usual. You could really taste the zaatar and gruyere. I thought the flavors complemented each other really well. And I really enjoyed how the zaatar flavors were more enhanced as you ate the croissant. The salted croissant surprised me! The honey gave off a caramel flavor and had a really good thickness. I didn't get any saltiness from it, but I enjoyed it and would get again. Super happy for the owners! They definitely deserve all the praise and recognition. Very nice bakery cafe! We were planning on driving from the Bay Area to Folsom for an event and made a detour to Pastry Cat in East Sacramento. So glad we did. The food is delicious, the service was great- super fast with the drinks and food- and the cafe itself was clean and bright. We came around 11:00 and even though the line was to the door, everything went quickly. We got a bunch of stuff: chocolate croissant and chocolate chip cookie for my son, breakfast biscuit sandwich, French toast, zaatar pastry and a salted honey pastry, matcha latte and vanilla latte, and a bag of coffee and a few bags of granola to-go. We got the food to go and were able to stand and eat outside and enjoy the weather. The pain suisse was delicious and crispy on the outside, but we made the error of not asking for it to be heated up. Regardless it was super yummy and can only imagine how heated would have been 5 stars. The croissant was perfection and closest to French quality we have had in Sacramento. We never caught Pastry Cat for their popups and were really excited to try them out at their brick and mortar location. We got there just before 8 am on the Friday and there was already a line. There's plenty of free street parking. As far as lining up, it was a bit tight with everyone on the ramp (there's a big rose bush or something), so you're going to be running up against the thorns if you're not careful. The seating inside is a little limited, but very cute! There's a little outdoor patio as well, where you can exit from, but then you'll get back to the ramp where people are lining up. I imagine this will be less of an issue as the hype eases over time. We got to the front of the line, and there are items like craft coffee beans, matcha, and chocolate that you can purchase. Their pastry case was beautiful. Service was alright. The gal at the front was kind of low energy and didn't really bother to introduce any of the items or ask if we had questions. Additionally, after we got our drinks, we noticed that the lids didn't fit properly on our matcha. My partner asked if there was a different lid for the matcha, and they simply pointed to the lids on the counter, which was where we got it from. We tried a couple of lids and it was clear they were all the same size and did not fit properly. I'm kind of surprised they didn't test it ahead of time. In any case, the matcha was just ok. Color seemed ok, but not as vibrant and the flavor is not as strong as other local matcha shops. Overall, the sweet pastries were quite sweet for my palate. As for the pastries, we ordered the following: -Hazelnut hojicha financier: I liked the texture due to the butter, a bit of crispiness to the edges and it was soft, moist. I liked the large salt pieces and this was probably the least sweet of all 3 pastries (which were all sweet for me). This would go well with black coffee. I think this was my favorite of the 4 pastries we got. -Cara cara almond croissant: This was probably the sweetest pastry due to the almond portion of the filling. The cara cara marmalade (?) was strong in flavor but it didn't seem well distributed with the almond (edges and center had almond, and it seemed the cara cara was more towards the center). The croissant had a very nice crunch though! -Strawberry banana passionfruit scone: Quite sweet as the drizzle was covering most of the scone. I felt like there was a lot going on with the three fruits. -Zaatar and gruyere croissant: It was nice and flaky, buttery. Again, I wished the toppings were distributed a bit more. The gruyere was more towards the center of the croissant, with the zaatar being more evenly distributed. I hope to try their cookies and kitchen items in the future! read more

The chefs do not wear their hair back or in any sort of net and visibly are touching the plated food with their bare hands. As for service, I was waiting in line then waited outside per the signage indicating not to block the door. However you cannot see if the line has lessened from the POV of the entrance. I waited then entered and was immediately told to wait outside although I was not blocking the walkway. The short younger brunette was quite rude in her tone as well. Pastries are mid. They have a max of 6 which seems odd considering the hospital is within walking distance, hindering the health workers from placing large orders. The pistachio cherry is overfilled and overly saturated with filling making it mushy and hard to eat. The vanilla rum canele was burnt. The miso cookie was way too salty and had an odd texture. My visit to Pastry Cat is only one star less than perfect because the long line to get in was really to get a beverage. Blessedly, there were two Caramel Apple Crumble cakes left. So...if ever there was a perfect bite, this was it!!! Each bite greeted your tongue with a layer of caramel, followed by a slightly tart apple slice, a moist spiced cake and then a crumb topping that was not dry!! The ham and cheese croissant was probably the best I've ever had! Real ham (not lunch meat) with aged cheese. My waistline is happy they are only open weekends at this time. Split if your partner is willing as items are quite rich. (But I'm not splitting the ham and cheese next time). Downside: Coffee not as good as Temple, but then nothing around town is. However, the matcha latte was very light - it's giving I drink matcha for aesthetics. There is a limit on pastries yet even with said limit, they continue to sell out bright and early and it discourages consumers from wanting to even try to come back to snag a pastry. Like another review stated, they just can't keep up with the demand and I can't help but feel that the beginning is the most crucial time to build clientele. What do you mean you open at 8a and sellout of pastries by 9:30a? And to only be open Friday-Sunday... And when you finally do get a chance to snag some pastries, the pricing is steep. I saw this place randomly when getting food at Druthers. I went in and the place was packed. I got a vanilla canella and a mushroom pastry. Both were amazing! Parking is in the neighborhood. First time here at their new location, great service with the cashier and food delivery. I used to go to their pop-ups @ Off-beat coffee. Unfortunately this is where the experience turned sour.. I had some of their water out of their self-serve dispenser and I got a gulp of bleach water. So I tried to wash it down with the latte that I purchased, but it just made my drink taste bland. I tried eating the Cara Cara almond croissant, at least that cut through the bleach taste just a bit. I told one of the workers and at least she took the dispenser to the back right away. At the end of my experience, my throat was dry and closing up. read more

!!Hot Take Alert!! *Best* laminated pastries in the Sac area. The bountiful thin and crispy layers in the ham & cheese pain suisse and the kimchi cheese danish.....pheeew. Taste-wise, I'd say the pastries here are pretty above average based on my whole haul. Love how fermented the kimchi is on the kimchi cheese danish (though wished that the kimchi was cut into smaller pieces as for each bite I felt like I was removing a whole chunk on top of the pastry lol). The ham in the ham & cheese pain suisse is a bit sweet for my liking but if you like honey ham you'd enjoy it. Calamansi almond croissant is twice-baked-style, which is my favorite style of croissant, so bonus points from me. Scrumptiously buttery and crispy. Could've used slightly less calamansi curd filling as it's on the really rich side. Heavenly glaze on the persimmon pecan scone! I prefer this scone over the shiitake bacon cheese scone, which is also tasty but I'm not fully on board with the gummy texture of the shiitake mushroom slices in it. Sobadoodle cookie got its name because one of its ingredients is buckwheat flour, which is also used to make soba noodles. Her pop up's were already selling out every time I've gone to her for years, and on their soft opening day the line was the craziest I've ever seen for any similar business in Sacramento. The "Pastry Cat" bakes all of her pastries with love, and now that I've tried her husband's cooking too I am convinced love is abundant in that household. When you look around the dining room you see so many smiles, you see families laughing everywhere, the vibe is just so inexplicably right. So much attention to detail was put in to getting this atmosphere to look clean and welcoming. The open kitchen concept is going to be used in some magnificent ways, I can already tell! Both times I've come in I've chatted with the most random and lovely people. That doesn't happen to me in other places often. The pastries here offer something unique, seasonal, creative, and seemingly personal to Nariya. The ham and cheese is elevated with delicious Gruyère, her zataar croissant bun is exactly the kind of savory pastry I never knew I needed, and her fruit selection sings to my tropical and seasonal palate. I am looking forward to the return of her donuts which often change with the fruits of the season. My second visit I got to try the French toast which I believe is her husband Scott's side of the business, and I am absolutely blown away at how fast the service was on this dish. It was out in minutes. The home baked shokupan was so perfect. I am so happy to see that day 3 of being barely open they are even selling out of the biscuit sandwich now in addition to all the pastries. I can't wait to try that one next time! Best ham and cheese croissant in Sacramento hands down. Given the regional competition this is high praise. The croissant dough is flaky and the ham and cheese are generously portioned and well seasoned. We tried a few other pastries and all were delicious. From savory sausage scones to flaky almond yuzu croissants everything was delicious and meticulously prepared. Expect to wait in line as word is getting out about how good this food is. On Saturdays they are located inside Offbeat coffee as a pop-up. Seating and ambiance are pretty typical coffee shop.
