Victor's Cafe has some of my favorite Mediterranean food in San Diego. Their chicken kebab plate is genuinely the best chicken kebab I've had. The chicken is always so flavorful, but honestly, the rice might be just as good. It's the best rice I've had from any Mediterranean restaurant in San Diego. My husband usually gets the gyro salad, which is another favorite for us. And we can't come here without getting the feta fries! Definitely one of those places where we already know exactly what we're ordering before we walk in. If you're going for the first time, get the chicken kebab plate and feta fries. Before opening the to-go containers back at our hotel room, I would have bet good money that I'd never had food from Victors before. However, as soon as I saw the salad dressing container, I realized I have had their food. On several ocassions, in fact, as this is the go-to spot for our events team when we're prepping for an internal event and need food to feed a crowd. I recognized the pinkish salad dressing right away, as I mentioned, and one bit of the buttery, almost too-rich rice sealed it for me. I got the Gyros & Spanakopita plate ($14.95), my husband ordered the Victors Chicken & Spanakopita plate ($14.95). Each combo plate came with a small side salad (and the pinkish dressing.) We also got an order of their Baba Ghanouj & Pita appetizer ($4.95). While I did enjoy the flavor of the gyros and spanakopita, the plate felt like it was more rice than meat. The spana was crispy and flaky, but I would have liked a little more feta in the pastry; it felt a bit thin. The rice was overly buttery, which I expected, but not so oily that night. Their baba was unedible. It was bitter and too watery, I think they put too much tahini in it, maybe? We ended up just splitting the pita to finish our entrees and dumping the baba. My husband said the chicken had good flavor, but wished there were a few more pieces - even if they had been tiny - on the plate. He also liked the spanakopita, but said it was on the thinner side. There ls a young lady that has taken my order several times and she is consistently pleasant. However, the young man that took my order today was not. I've been going to the RB location since Victor opened the RB location (I worked across the street since '77!) and then the Poway location that his son's started. The best Gyros anywhere around, and the best conversations with the sons in Poway in the evening. Wed temporarily relocated out of state and had a hankering for a Gyro so off I go to RB. Unfortunately it's not what I remember. Ordering was fine, talkative, attentive, friendly and appreciative. Ordered a Gyro plate combo with salad as my 2 sides (double me up!). Their dressing was the best ever and I remember asking how they made it long ago (and they'd told me). They brought out the plate and had to first ask for tzatziki sauce, then for salad dressing. It wasn't busy so that was disappointing. Overall the Gyro was good. Plenty of meat with a few slices of tomato & red onion. Salad was ok, the lettuce was ... robust, I think it would survive a nuclear war. Dressing is not what I remembered and I didn't eat much of the salad. The tzatziki seemed very thin but it worked. The plate was $17 with water. Overall if I really had another hankering for a gyro and I hadn't found anything better by then I'd definitely go back, however; I'd skip the plate/salad and just get the sandwich. read more

Paid by card. Victors is located in the same plaza as Jersey Mike's and offers plaza parking. I went in on a weekday night and was easily able to order to go since no one was ahead of me. I ordered the gyro plate with fries and hummus and pita bread. When I left and started eating I realized I didn't have the hummus and pita so I called them and asked them to refund my card because I wasn't going back to pick it up. My family and I have been coming to Victors for 10+ years and this wasn't the best experience We ordered a combo plate, our usual, to go and when my husband got back home it was the smallest portions. I would best describe it like a child's meal. The side salad was lacking lettuce and the meat and rice was half the usual portion. The lamb was so incredibly dry too. On Wednesday this past week, the family wanted me to pick up dinner at one of our local restaurants. We debated what we wanted to eat, so I suggested Greek/Mediterranean food. Within close proximity to our house, there are several restaurants that serve this type of cuisine. We've eaten at the chains Kebab Shop and Luna Grill, and we've eaten at a local mom and pop Victor's Kafe, but I've never reviewed this restaurant. Our to go experience of their Family Meal was worthy of 3.5 stars. Victor's Kafe is located in Rancho Bernardo specifically on Bernardo Center Drive heading west as you exit off of the 15 freeway. It is located within a small strip mall that contains 7-11, Domino's Pizza, Kelly's Pub, and Jersey Mike's Subs. Victor's Kafe is a small restaurant that has adequate indoor seating and few tables and chairs outside. It's a clean restaurant with minimal decor on the walls except for a pic of who I assume is Victor with a child and there is a television mounted to whatever is showing. When I traveled to Victor's Kafe, the plan was for me to purchase gyro sandwiches and fries. I went ahead and started my order with the friendly young man behind the counter, but changed my mind after I saw a placard advertising their Family Meal. It stated that the Family Meal feeds 4-5 people for $49.99 and it includes the following: 1lb of gyros, 1lb of Victor's chicken, 1lb of rice pilaf, Greek salad, pita bread, tzatziki, and VK dressing. I also ordered french fries and feta fries. When we got home and opened our to go order, we were disappointed by the minimal amount of rice and pita bread. It definitely fed our family of four, but I thought it was overpriced. The gyro was tasty, the chicken was tender and dry on some pieces, and the Greek salad with the VK dressing was one of the highlights. I was also disappointed by the amount you get with the fries and feta fries, both of which were just okay. I read some reviews where people thought highly of Victor's Kafe. I'd rate it 3.5 stars and there were some positives about the Family Meal. Next time, we'll just order gyro sandwiches and fries like I had initially planned. read more

My gyro sandwich was great, but the fries were burned. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this. My wife said the restaurant was dead so being slammed isn't an excuse. You have one job... provide great tasting food. How in the world do you serve burnt fries? It's either the employee didn't care or wasn't paying attention. Awesome little Mediterranean place. It's in a little strip mall that has a bit of tight parking but manageable. Some outdoor seating although the view isn't ideal. Everyone seems friendly inside, and their combo plates which include 2 sides of choice and a drink are only 11.95. But they forgot the spicy sauce no both of them. I got the combo with double fries....small portion of fries for a double order. I actually thought they forgot one of the fries so asked and she was not helpful and stand offish. She even went to get the receipt for some odd reason. I didn't forgot what I ordered. Lol. I often have my husband pick this up on his way home from work. It's very good Greek food. I usually order the Pepper plate with gyros which means gyros are served with cooked onions & bell peppers. The rice pilaf is excellent & the salad dressing is one of the best I've had in Greek restaurant. It's creamy, not the standard oil & vinegar with herbs (which I happen to love), & has a bit of "funk" - perhaps feta?. At any rate it's delicious. My husband usually orders chicken & gyros plate. Chicken is tender & not over cooked which tends to be a problem w/ chicken kabobs. I look forward to days when I'm too tired to cook & having Greek food instead. read more
