Tucked into a nondescript strip mall in the Horsepen area, this fabulous little joint nails authentic Vietnamese food. When you walk in the door, the smells and sounds take you to a noodle shop in Ho Chi Minh City. The staff is friendly, fast, and dedicated to service. The pho and noodle dishes are rich in flavor and variety. Lunch specials are priced right and they get you in and out quickly. Lunch gets busy, so get there a little early. The location is clean and pretty uncluttered compared to other Vietnamese spots in the area. I love the Pho here and also there wide selection of Boba tea. The Pho broth is not as flavorful as Pho So 1, but that might just be a discrepancy for today. I have been here once before and the broth was delicious. The meat portions are very generous. One of the many suitable spots in Richmond (and more specifically Near West End) to get your pho phixe in a casual setting with equally casual prices. Having been to most of the Vietnamese places north of the river in Richmond, I'd say this place holds its own. Not a total dive like a couple of the other places close by, but equally inexpensive prices and flavorful pho. I thought service was great- just remember you pay at the register. I've actually been here a few times over the past decade I've been in RVA but have always preferred pho so 1. After my run this late morning, I ran extra hard thinking about a wonderful bowl of pho afterwards but to my surprise ran into a sign that said pho so 1 is now only open wed-sun.....so since I was still in the area, drove over to Viet 1 to fulfill my pho craving. The service is always good here. Polite and very efficient, may not always be the friendliest but they typically always get your order right and check up on you regularly. The pho itself was nothing special. It wasn't bad or anything, it did the job in fulfilling my craving, priced at $9 and had a good portion mix of noodles, veggies and meat. They didn't check on our table one time. I didn't complain, I just walked up to the counter and asked for the other dish we'd ordered that they'd forgotten about. Meanwhile, I watch the owner's daughter and her kids all wearing Lily Pulitzer just striding through the restaurant like they couldn't bear to look at the common people eating in their restaurant - still, while not a single person came to check on the table. There was used chewing gum on the basil leaves that came with the soup that I didn't know about until I was literally tearing the basil leaf into my soup and I felt then saw the gum on my finger. It was so disgusting I can't even put it in words. There was a man who ordered carry out and just sat in the corner staring at me and my children. I used to go to this restaurant a lot, but for eff's sake, this was an unbelievably bad experience and I can't believe they still expect a tip. read more

The portion size is perfect and you can always add extra to you order. The dining location is family friendly and the variety of food to order from is extensive. WORSE SEVICE EVER!!!! They sat me, took my order, and delivered my food.... that's it!!! They never came back to check on me to see if I needed anything. Never refilled my water. One of the guys just stood behind the cash register with his back faced towards the dinning room. One guest waiting to pay waited five minutes before someone else came out from behind where they eat (it's blocked off by a shower curtain in the dining room) and collected his payment (the guy at the register still stood with his back towards the dinning room the entire time the guest waited to pay his bill!!! I got up, paid my bill (left no tip because well you actually have to do something to earn a tip) and walked out. The food was okay, I could get better else where with better service!!! While on my journey towards sampling new Asian inspired cuisines from restaurants in RVA, I stumbled across Vietnam One. Now throughout my lifetime, I've had, Chinese, Korean and Thai inspired food, but I've never had Vietnamese inspired food. And it just so happens that I've passed this particular restaurant hundreds of times over the past few years and decided to give it a try. How did my experience go? To find out, read below: The Good: Deceptive Portion Size- I ordered the Beef Broth Pho with Chicken Strips. Inside the bowl was of course the broth, meat, rice noodles, and a few other goodies. When I initially saw a picture of the bowl of Pho, I initially thought that it would be a meal that would leave me hungry after consuming it. But the Pho was pretty filling, so much so that I didn't even finish most of the broth. Price- The price of the Pho was under $8. Given the portion size I thought that the price was pretty fair. On the Fence: Taste- Prior to eating my bowl of Pho, I was given a plate of items which included lime wedges, bean sprouts, peppers and a leafy vegetable. There was no explanation from the server on what I was to do with that plate so the assumption was that I was supposed to add the items to my bowl. Before adding anything to the Pho, I tasted it to see what all of the hype was about. After one sampling, I knew that I had to spruce that baby up. I added some lime wedges, peppers, bean sprouts and even a liberal spritzing of the red chili sauce and bam, that was a Pho that I could enjoy. The Bad: Service- The food was brought to the table lightning quick, but the server had taken his time to refill our drinks and clean the dishes off of the table. The server also did not put the check on the table. I had to inquire about the bill at the cash register and was able to pay up there. Overall- After adding the additional ingredients to my Pho, I became a fan, but first impressions are lasting. The service was far from perfect and it certainly didn't appear to be friendly to anyone that is eating Vietnamese food for the first time. Nevertheless, I could see myself giving this place another chance. There is no rating between three and four stars so I will give this place a low FOUR STARS. read more

I've been coming here for four years with my three best friends and this is the number one place we collectively miss the most now that I'm living back in Ohio and they in different states as well (college has ended for us). Oh my god though, it's so good. This place is home to us. We come here when we are hungry, stressed, sad, or celebratory. We frequent this place every other week. There is literally no other viet place better than here. Their tofu is seasoned to absolute perfection and pairs so well with vermicelli. Their peanut sauce is literally the best one of all the viet places in this city. Their hot and sour soup? Better than the Chinese places. Their Thai spicy noodles? Better than all the Carytown Thai joints. Is there anything they can't do well?! Not to mention their bubble tea slushes are just amazing. Service is always great too. I come here so often that I feel like I've watched the owners family grow up. I've witnessed babies reaching walking age. And after having been absent for two months in Ohio but recently in Richmond for a week...I stopped by the other day and got a warm "long time no see" greeting that nearly brought me to tears. I can't cope knowing that I'll have to go back to Ohio soon and miss this place for many more months again. Oh Vietnam one, how I love you so thanks for being not just a place with incredible food, but a second home to me and my three other college best friends. Out of the blue one day I told my buddy that we should come here for dinner we drove 45 minutes just to get here. My buddies from Rhode Island and he told me that the noodles here we're better than places that he had tried back in Rhode Island. We got our appetizers quick and the main entrée shortly after. The service was really good, and the amount of customers, not too crowded and the place was very clean. The menu has a lot of different choices. Be forewarned: this is not your dressed up dinning experience, clearly money is not invested into the decor and it does look like a cafeteria when you walk into it (all good signs when dealing with an Asian restaurants). This past time I ordered the (N6 - I think) Hoanh Thanh Mi. Its soup (beef broth) that has egg noodles, small pieces of roast pork and pork dumplings. You can dress it up very similarly to how you would Pho or eat it as its served. This to me is one of their best dishes. The soup has great flavor that mixes incredibly well with the egg noodles. The dumplings and roasted pork add nice surprises to the dish. I would tell you this place is a must to check out if you want solid Vietnamese food. I had a sudden pho craving and Yelp made it so I would be satisfied. Actually, I was on my way to Pho So I, but never found it. I ordered a Spring Roll (photo) and the P1 (Pho-Beef Noodle Soup with everything). Dislikes: I was disappointed at the size of the Spring Roll. I know I shouldn't compare this place to my faves in sunny San Diego, but it wasn't the best way to start the meal. Neutral: The service was decent. The staff wasn't rude nor were they overly friendly either. I asked the waiter for more napkins (I'm a chronic spiller) and he brought me two napkins. Hah. Likes: The pho was delicious. The portion wasn't as large as I'm accustomed to, but I was more than satisfied. The restaurant itself was neat and clean with a great mix of customers. I went during lunch and it was decently filled. Definitely a good sign. Star Rating: I gave 4 stars because I will definitely return to this place and would recommend it to someone wanting to try pho. Vietnam 1 is one of my favorite spots for lunch on the go. It's pretty much the Vietnamese equivalent to a diner: not much decor, lots of tables and chairs, quick efficient service. I've had the rare beef pho and the vegetarian pho here. Both were tasty. Flavorful broth, lots of noodles and they come with copious amounts of basil, jalapeno, lime and sprouts for adding. I almost always start my meal with the jicama roll, a fresh roll with jicama used in place of noodles. I love the crunch and fresh flavor the jicama adds. The House-Grill Vermacelli bowl here is also a hit. A selection of barbecued shrimp, chicken, pork and crispy spring rolls sit atop vermacelli noodles, lettuce, cucumber, bean sprouts, carrots and basil. The meat is all very flavorful from the grilling technique, and it combines perfectly with the rest of the stuff for a big bowl of noodley goodness. The barbecued shrimp are the best here, if you're looking for one meat instead of many. Add some hot sauce, dip in fish sauce and it's a sweet-spicy goodness at its finest. You can even add a crispy spring roll into the mix for a bit of an upcharge. Thinking about all the fresh flavors and they way they blend together perfectly is making me think I might have to go here for lunch today. That's how good it is. Service is always friendly, but it's also efficient. They are trying to move people in and out, especially at lunch or on rainy days when there's a line out the door for soup. It's not a place to come and linger. It's a place to dive in, eat, and make room for more people. Note to those who haven't been before: even though there's waiter service, you pay at the counter. Overall, my review can be summed up as good, but there's better. The reason for this is that some things are good, but others leave much room for improvement. Good pho, but the spring rolls have far too many harsh-tasting herbs...a mixture of licorice-tasting basil (as opposed to sweet basil) and mint and it all adds up to a pretty offensive flavor. Bear in mind that this comes from one of the least picky eaters I know---me! And I love strong flavors, but stuff like this is where I draw the line. Great banh xeo and that's the main reason I'd go. The banh xeo isn't greasy at all and this is one of the few places in the area that has it, besides Mekong (where it's terribly greasy and unappetizing). Banh xeo is 5 stars. The price was right, service was good, and atmosphere was just fine. I just like to know that I will enjoy everything I order, and it bugs me that I can't count on good fresh spring rolls (AKA summer rolls--not fried) at this place. read more

One of the best Vietnamese places in the area! Local and family run that stay true to the taste and culture of Vietnam. They have a wide variety of items on the menu but my favorite is the bbq chicken and shrimp with either rice paper rolls or rice noodles. Love that they are a small family run restaurant that is a gem in our community. The family that runs it are kind and hardworking folks with good service. Right nearby Tan-A Asian super market as well. We have enjoyed many a family meals here and love it! read more

BEST veggie pho w/ vegan broth that i've EVER had. A huge heap of fresh vegetables (snow peas, broccoli, carrot, etc.) and plenty of tofu. The broth is exquisitely seasoned and the noodles are delicious. Good and clean ambiance, although it is a tight space for the number of seating. Food arrived quickly, very pleasant service. I had the fried dumplings but I didn't care for them much. They were clearly frozen and were oozing with water. I didn't expect them to be so chewy. Meh. I had the Bun Bo Hue, which is a spicy beef stock and lemon grass noodle soup. The flavor of the broth was good and the goodies were plentiful. It was on their current special list, so it was delicious. My girlfriend had the Gio Ga (chicken salad). This was very disappointing. I was expecting the usual Vietnamese salad that consists of pickled carrots, lotus root, cucumbers, cilantro, mint leaves etc. Instead, she got iceberg lettuce, dry carrots, and bean sprouts. The chicken was ok and had some sort of bbq sauce on it.. She said it was good. But for my Vietnamese tongue, it was not exciting. 3 stars because the Bun Bo Hue saved the lunch. Vietnam 1 is a very special restaurant for me because this was where my first date was, ever! Not much has changed in the last 10 or so years that I have been coming here. Most of the employees are still the same and decor just simple. On my most recent visit I got the combination seafood noodle soup (hu tieu mi) that comes with both vermicelli noodles and egg noodles. The protein included: shrimp (only 2..), scallops (only one piece), sliced fish balls, and I think also chicken as well. The broth was very tasty! Not too salty, and didn't taste artificial. Noodles were also delicious and soft. I wish there was a little more protein though and that they didn't skimp out on that. Service was fast like usual and the food came out in less than 5 minutes for our table. Bathrooms are always pretty clean and I've never really had a bad experience here. As for the pho when I do get it, it's average for RVA. It's not the best, but it'll satisfy my craving if i have one. When you're done you pay up front at the register and tell them what you got. Parking lot is a little small and shares it with several other small businesses so parking can be a little crazy on the weekends when it gets busy. read more

A 3.5. The pho here was good, but I prefer Pho So 1. They have more selection than just pho and grilled meat on bun or rice and that's why I'd go again. My mom got the Hu Tieu (a pork based soup with clear noodles, with pork, shrimp, quail egg) and she liked it. Service was fast. Ambience was like an average pho shop. I had lunch here before picking up someone from the Staples Mill Amtrak Station. Since I was short on time, I only got to quickly glance at the menu. I ended up ordering the ubiquitous "Pho #1". There was only one size available for $7.95 (+$2.00 for extra noodles). As always, I tasted the broth first. It was tasty, but not quite as rich and flavorful as Pho So 1's pho base. Also, the bean sprouts were not as fresh-looking. I would have liked more tendon and tripe too. The decor was very nice, better than a lot of Vietnamese places I've eaten at (of course, the food is what matters most). I'm still learning Vietnamese cuisine and am not a picky eater, but this place blew me away! This is only the fourth Vietnamese restaurant I've tried and all have been good for different reasons. Pho '79 in VB was my first pho, House of Vietnam was where I became a man, and Saigon River is where I got a little adventurous from the menu (hehe). I've quickly learned that it's all about the food and not about the elegance. I'm sure there are faaancy places out there too but I'll take the food first any day. I followed Megan M.'s suggestion of the House-Grill Vermicelli and loved it. Perfectly grilled meats (no overcooked shrimp here!) on a bed of noodles and fresh and crispy vegetables. I emptied the bowl and would have continued to eat it if they brought out another one. (I'm big boned!) I want to hang out in this part of town to try the places that others have suggested. I'll be back here though; I'm anxious to find my standard Richmond pho and want to have a little fun with the menu. read more
