Flavor nonexistent The Bun Tom Thrit Nurong - shrimp and sliced pork over bean sprouts - with some hot sauce on the side and the Nurong Cuon - sliced pork with vegetables in rice paper wrap were built with the same dry sliced pork pieces. The shrimp were the best part of the two dishes. The Sake (salmon roll) Roll was not bad but fresher salmon have been sighted elsewhere. The Spicy Conch sushi roll and the Steamed Shrimp Haukau were good but not sufficient to redeem the meal, and not worth the trip. Not representative of good Vietnamese cuisine. read more

My family always enjoys the food and its favor. There's something special about how they treat their costumers and I love their love for their craft. I worked in a pho restaurant for about 6 years. I was a server, but would also regularly cook and help prepare food with the Vietnamese family that owned the place, so I know a bit about what goes into most of the stuff you see in the average Vietnamese restaurant. I also often ate at other restaurants to help our own food improve! I'm not Vietnamese nor have I been to Vietnam. But please take my experience into account as I have cooked in a traditional kitchen and eaten LOTS of Vietnamese food through the years! Here's a breakdown of my order: Pho Tai | 2/5 | Probably the thing you will order, and I'm here to tell you it is very very average. Extremely mid pho. The broth is very bland-- maybe they don't cook it with a large enough bones & brisket slabs or maybe the spice ball isn't big enough..maybe it isn't cooked for long enough? But this was just not flavorful at all and in fact tasted almost diluted, like they mixed 30% or so of my serving with water. The veggie portion is OK as was the meat. Noodle portion was a bit small in my experience (about a handful), but it's enough. Hoisin and sriracha cup they include is also hilariously small, so make sure you have extra at home. Bún Riêu | 2/5 | I was really excited to this because it's a traditional dish with tons of different flavors and ingredients and it's not always on every restaurant's menu. I ate a lot of this through the years and it's my favorite so when I saw it offered I ordered immediately. The broth was pretty bland, and a bit too heavy on the tomato so the acidity was very high without any noticeable cut from the umami of msg or sweetness from something like sugar. The tofu was not fried which is possibly a personal qualm, but most bun rieu i've had included fried tofu. Noodle portion, as with the pho, was a bit small. About a handful. It came with a good amount of veggies and crab/egg "meatball" but the broth did not pull everything together, making it a disappointment for me. Fried Eggroll | 4/5 | Pretty good! These have a great filling and a good amount of filling too, plus they are fried quite well! The only downside is that the sauce it comes will tasted quite diluted, almost like a sweet chili sauce mixed with water. I was expecting traditional nước chấm, so it was a bit odd without it. If the sauce they included was "nước chấm," then it was very oddly thick and did not taste like it as all. Veggie Tempura | 2/5 | It's just ok. This was not really what I wanted it to be. Given this is a Japanese frying method, it's not really meant to be the star of the show at a Vietnamese place, but the panko was fried a bit too hard (it was slightly too hard--more of a "crush with your teeth to break" than a "crunchy bite"). And to my astonishment... there was celery? I have never before had tempura celery and it was not good by any means. This definitely felt like a way for them to save money or something. I would not order this unless you are really just craving fried stuff. Really, just make it at home. Without celery. BBQ Bánh Mì | 1/5 | There is a LOT of mayonnaise on this. Like way too much for the ratio of bread/meat. The jalapeno slices I got were more than 1/2 inch thick--when they should either be finely chopped or thinly sliced maybe a few millimeters. Just absurdly large slices. It felt rushed/careless. The meat had a decent sweet/savory flavor blend but there were multiple bones and chewy bits throughout the sandwich that it was practically inedible as I ended up spitting about half of it out. Only thing that was okay was the daikon/carrot mix which I already make at home myself as its extremely easy to make. So I can't really give them any props for this at all. Tuna Maguro (Sushi) | 4/5 | Yeah, this is just a slab of tuna on rice. It was good. Their sushi rice has a good flavor, wasabi has a good potency & came with a nice bit of ginger. It was, however, packed next to hot food and I think probably was "unsafe" to eat at its temperature, possibly even got a tad cooked. So overally good, but hard to mess up raw tuna slices. Overall this place just tasted like someone's first attempt of making Vietnamese food, or like someone diluting down the restaurants food. Most of the items I ordered I felt to be missing "something." It was truly a disappointment and I will be going out for pho elsewhere later in the week as this did not even satisfy my craving. read more

FIRST EVER 1 star review for a Vietnamese restaurant. THIS IS NOT A REPRESENTATION OF VIETNAMESE CUISINE. Banh Mi was bread, 4 table spoons of mayo, 6 tiny pieces of meat. No flavor. Spring rolls were made yesterday completely fell apart with a week old sprouts. Beef stew meat was CHEWY. Its beef stew cmon yall! Suppose to be tender. I stopped coming here. Unless I am REALLY craving some Vietnamese food in a hot-mess way, I don't think that I will return. Mostly because...There is something strange going on with their Pho broth; it tastes like they use either Korean or Japanese dashi powder as the Pho base. Pho base should never be prepared with such a base, because then that would not be considered Pho since it tastes in-no-way Vietnamese at all. For those that do not know what dashi is and are not able to google it--- Dashi is dried and smoked fish shavings, often eaten as-is (like potato chips or fries with beer), used as flavor enhancers (ex: in broths), or as a condiment/decoration (on top of takoyaki or okonomiyaki). The ladies from work refer to their soup as "the yummy fish bacon soup." And that is why. No thanks. Interesting that one of the employees from this location moved over to the new Vietnamese restaurant in Cortez Mall, and their Pho broth tastes like Pho. Enough about broth... ----------------------------------------------------------- I have noticed a steady decline on all of the foods items in general. Well, not all, because I refuse to eat sushi here. The jasmine rice is often overcooked. They use Korean style kimchi instead of Vietnamese pickled on rice plates. And it tastes from a jar, you know, like the kimchi that you buy at Publix and then never buy again. The Banh Mi has waaaaaaay too much mayo. I would call this Vietnamese-inspired food made by non-Vietnamese. To me, Pho broth is probably made with instant pho powder rather than the real broth that usually made by slow cooking beef bones over night. Spring rolls and banh mi were looking miserable. In this town with not so many Asians I wasn't expecting the great quality but this is way below acceptable. Saturday night but there was only one server. The sushi chef helped out but the real problem was the kitchen took at least 45 min to deliver. Just hope the owner reads this message and improve the quality. I LOVE and MISS Vietnamese food! I'm Vietnamese and its very difficult to find a good place in Sarasota. My hubs is Italian so he's happy with his cheese and pep so I'm typically on my own for Asian. I love Pho Cali but it is much further than we'd like to go for take out. I saw this place on yelp and decided to try. I ordered the fresh roll, banh hoi, and banh mi. I make fresh rolls at home so I'm used to "fresh flavor". These were delicious. Had both pork and shrimp. Good size and delish! Next, the banh mi (Vietnamese hoagie). These I absolutely love. I can eat these 4 days in a row. It was pretty tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Next time, I will order 2. It was smaller than I expected, but then again it was only $3.50. That's it! When I arrived in the restaurant, I was greeted by the owner and chef. He was extremely nice but he didn't really offer any recommendation. I order the bun bo hue and he states not many people order it so he doesn't have the thicker noodles. He had to uses thinner noodles for the dish which I was fine with. When the noodle soup arrived, the broth wasn't strong enough and the ingredients within was overcooked, specially the meat. I like Pho but I'm far from an expert with the exception that I know good from bad, and I thought this was quite good. Flavorful broth, plenty of rice noodles, TENDER beef, and served with very fresh basil, bean sprouts, peppers, lime etc. And reasonably priced too at $8.95. They have a sensibly priced Sushi menu and a selection of Banh Mi neither of which we tried on this first visit. I do wonder how a place this small in both size and volume can have truly fresh fish on a daily basis? I'll have to try and hopefully be able to add some stars. Awesome little place.....so far I've made two trips...one for the Vermicelli Noodle Bowl, and one for the Meatball and Top Round Pho (#25 on the menu)...both were beyond awesome. Great flavor, and HUGE servings. On top of that, the price is more than reasonable. Not much room to sit down if they're busy (lunchtime), but well worth it if you can get in. read more

Worst pho we have ever had. Maybe it was because we got it to-go, but holy cow... we got food to eat after because it was so bad. First, I ordered extra noodles - I would say I got less than I would normally get, in general, even. The amount of chicken was so little and it was very dry; definitely not tasty. We asked for extra sauce and chili paste and were rudely told "all the sauce was in the bags." We get home to open the bags, there is about a pinch of soy sauce, NO siracha, a tiny bit of hoisin sauce, and NO chili paste. What? How am I supposed to make a broth? The potstickers also came with no soy sauce, good thing we have our own. I will say, the fried egg rolls were VERY GOOD. But I can't even bump up my stars based on just those since the rest was so bad. Maybe the key to good pho is to eat it there? Either way, we will not be going back. read more

I too have been dying for this place to open. It did, I gave them a few weeks and a couple of weeks back I gave them a try. Since I was flying solo so I kept it simple, just the Bun Bo Hue. One of those touch stone things I get at new places to see what htey are up to. I read in another review it had the shank and the blood cake, which you just don't see that often. I knew I had to try it and plus spending money at a place with the guts to put that on their menu in this area was a must do. I hadn't had Bun Bo Hue with blood cake in it since I lived in Cali. You might be wondering, "blood cake, shank, trotters" is this guy insane? One thing many american's don't realize is a lot of asian food is about texture as well as taste. I found once I appreciated that fact my squirminess for odd foods was reduced and now I want to try everything the way their grand ma makes it back in the old country. So I figured this was perfect opportunity that I don't often get without leaving the area. The Bun Bo Hue was good. The broth was fine, but not the best I've had. A bit of spicy pepper paste on the blood cake and it was supper yummy. Think blood sausage and you'll get the idea. The shank was nice and chewy without being tough and very tasty. A nice chunk of pork with good bits that you have to work for. I don't know how long they'll keep these sorts of things on the menu in the face of squeamish folks, but go check them out. I enjoyed myself, the price was right and it was a great way to spend a quick lunch. The older couple at the table next to me ask what I was having, I told them and they said "really?" ANd i said "yes, it is great, but not for the novice and it is all bout the different textures, stick with the spring rolls and order some sushi." They laugh at that and the waiter rolled his yes. Half of me wants to keep this restaurant a secret; the other wants to let everyone know what a great place this is. I'll put my selfishness aside in the hopes that it'll keep this place open for a long time. I've been here twice now, and I loved the experience both times. The first time was with my son; he got Pho with sliced beef and meatballs (I won't even try to butcher the language - descriptions will have to suffice) and I got Bun with grilled chicken. The Pho was flavorful and fresh, with plenty of accoutrements - he got a plate filled with jalapeno slices, lime, bean sprouts, and the freshest basil I've ever seen or tasted. My Bun came with fish sauce, and I also stole some of my son's jalapeno. Both meals were filling and delicious. I took the rest of my family there for Mother's Day and we had much the same. Three of us ordered Pho, and my daughter ordered a Bun with grilled pork chop, meatloaf, and something else I can't remember now. The four of us were absolutely delighted with our choices. At the end, presumably because it was mother's day, we were presented with four small dishes of sticky rice with black-eyed peas and coconut milk for dessert, and my wife also received a steamed dumpling wrapped in a banana leaf. We didn't try any of the more unusual items, as we're easing into this type of cuisine. But our limited experience has been very positive and we're hopeful that they'll stay open for years to come. Let's just dive right in. This is my second time here and I have ordered the pho both times. I can say that the broth is very consistent. I had a decent experience both times. I didn't write a review the first time, but I was contemplating how to write this. I want to write a good review but I can't ignore the fact that the pho broth doesn't exactly taste like pho......now hold on, I'm writing a good review.. I know both pho places are not all the same, some really sweet, some really salty, some just taste like a bowl of MSG, but you can taste that the pho ingredients are all there. I'm very picky about my pho broths and really, the only place I really approve in Florida are 2 restaurants (one in St. Pete and one in Orlando...and I've pretty much tried all the places in the Tampa Bay region) and mostly due to the fact that their broth are flavorful and not heavy and not sweet. Okay, back to the review for this restaurant. The broth at this place is really flavorful and yet not heavy or sweet. You can taste that they used lots of good ingredients in their broth. I absolutely love the broth. It's perfect when you need a little pick-me-up or just craving some good noodle soup and won't feel like dying afterward. I am glad there is such a place in Bradenton. They are the only Vietnamese restaurant in Bradenton. The other Vietnamese restaurants around are in Sarasota, which are all pretty horrible (heavy in MSG, sweet, etc.) and are way overpriced... I believe Pho Cali charges $11-12 for a bowl of pho! This place only charge $7 here! Big difference there! They also serve banh mi and have a sushi bar, which I will need to try next time I have more people to join me than myself.. read more

Hidden gem! This place is tucked inside a small shopping strip, don't let that fool you! When you walk in the owner welcomes you. it's our fav spot to get Pho with extra bbq pork, yum! My husband loved his sandwich bahn mi, and now he wants to go back just to pick up a couple of these to smuggle into Carmike Theater. We probably eventually will. I'm originally from California, and was completely depressed I was missing out on a wide range of ethnic food I was used to.Pho is definitely one of those comfort foods, from feeling completely ill to helping with a hangover. I dragged my boyfriend here to help me find a pho joint even though he'd never tried it before meeting me. It ended being a stone throw away from our house which is even better. We have been deemed regulars by the owner. I was get a number 27, which is always spot on. My boyfriend deems the sushi delicious, the Vietnamese sandwiches are amazing as well. This is my first time here. Today I tried the grilled pork on steamed rice (#9). It was delicious! The flavor is slightly different than what I'm used to (relative to many other grilled pork Vietnamese dishes I've had) but it was satisfying. Also, it was either the fish sauce that accompanies this meal or the slight variation in the marinade that made this dish a bit spicy. Please note that I don't eat a lot of spicy food, so my tolerance is quite low. Regardless, I finished every last bite. The owner is really nice too.
