I've been working in the area for a while but somehow never made it in to Villa Mexico until today - and I'm so glad that I went! I noticed yesterday while walking by that they had tamales on their menu so I decided to stop in for lunch today. The menu is extensive and everything is freshly prepared, and the woman working the counter was so nice, friendly and accommodating. I got two pork tamales which came with a side of salsa, rice and beans. I also got a side of guacamole. I wasn't a huge fan of the guacamole as it was very smooth - more like an avocado puree. But that's just personal preference. The tamales were delicious but the real star of the show was the salsa. SO delicious. I scraped that little cup clean and will definitely be purchasing a jar from them in the future. Can't wait to go back and try more things on their menu and enjoy some of their daily specials! read more

I only just found out this morning that Villa Mexico Cafe had found a "new" home, only a half mile or so from my new job, so of COURSE I went there for lunch. I loved Villa Mexico years ago when it was a counter in a gas station mini-mart, and years before that when it was a sit-down restaurant in Woburn Center. In the seventeen years since I first tried Julie's salsa, I've never tasted another that I love anywhere near as much, and I'm delighted to find out (again) that I'm not romanticizing or exaggerating it out of nostalgia - it's still EXACTLY the salsa I fell in love with. I got the Chicken Mole Poblano, because Julie's Mole sauce is as good and as memorable as her salsa. The shredded chicken is meltingly tender, and the sauce is dark and complex and mysterious, and I finished with a spoon to make sure I didn't miss a drop. read more

Went in Tuesday of their first week around 1:30 for lunch with a friend. Was cheerily greeted when we walked in the door. There were people standing, waiting for food but the order was taken quickly. Didn't have to wait as long as I thought we would, and also managed to snag a seat at the adorable round seats by the windows. Friend really liked her chicken tacos, said they were very fresh. I always see lines of people outside this place so I finally gave it a go. I got the Carnitas Burrito. I got back to my desk to eat and was surprised to see a bland-looking burrito when I cut it in half. No salsa in it at all. I think I saw one piece of corn. Not many beans, rice was luke-warm, Carnitas was ok, but I am just shocked that I have heard good reviews about this place. I got a tastier burrito at Taco Bell! I am not sure what went wrong. Fantastic Burrito! I read the other reviews on here and the bad ones seem to be from they were first open. Usually I always wait at least 6 months to try a new place. By then the places gets the right flow going or is terrible. This place is 5 star all the way. Everything is cooked to perfection and fresh that very day. My wife had the cactus salad and I had the mole burrito. Everything was perfect! And the mole sauce was authentic and tasted amazing. This place is NOT a 3.5 place it is a 5 star for sure. Let me list the things that have made me a fan of Villa Mexico: 1- This place is clean, it's nice, forget about the stereotype Mexican places you've visited. This place feels like you are walking into someone's house from Mexico. It's a beautiful spot, the window chairs are really cool and they even have Mexican art. No fluorescent colors or sombreros, I immediately liked that about this spot. It's not cliche Mexican. 2-The food is amazing. Yeah, after you get over how pretty the restaurant is you get to order food and try it, that's the point. I almost feel like I gottta make a sub-category list for all the food. The burritos are just the best, period. Screw reviews here saying they're not "pescetarian" friendly (what the hell is that anyway girl?) This is a real Mexican food business, which means: don't ask for "pico," don't be surprised because guacamole is extra (where the hell are you getting free guacamole btw?), don't freaking hold the line because you want to change the menu!!! Which brings me to... 3-Lunchtime is PACKED...so don't hold the line changing the menu to fit your baja-cali-I'm on paleo- diet requests pleeeease! It's simple: choose your item, pick a meat, add guacamole or sour cream, done. The actual owner of the restaurant is usually charging and she's sweet as can be, but if you make extra requests she can take a little longer putting the items into the register FYI. Be patient, and also be nice you people. Because... 5- no wait, 4- This is the nicest possible crew ever found in the freakin' Financial District. Over the past year I've been visiting the restaurant at least once or twice a week and I have gotten candies, free drinks, treats like free dessert for Independence Day, Halloween, the start of summer, Thanksgiving, winter holidays, and their anniversary. I'll check Facebook or their little announcements to make sure I don't miss a party. They once gave out baby Tabasco bottles for some holiday, they were adorable. Yeah, I'm saying it. I still have my baby Tabasco bottle at my desk. If I ever wanna have a momentary moment of heat, you know what? I'm prepared! Those baby Tabasco bottles were a hit at my office. (Villa Mexico owners if you are seeing this can you make sure we get more baby Tabasco bottles please?) 5- They do catering, and they're competitive with their prices. I think that because they're still "new" in this area, they really go out of their way to get you anything you ask for. Our office got burritos and ordered a cake within a day and they complied, baked us a fresh cake. Maybe that's not a big deal but I think that a big cake from one day to the next plus cooking all the food and making catering orders is pretty awesome. 6- I should have written other things I had in mind but already forgot. Overall, the food is better than any "Mexican" place in Boston you can currently go to, hands down. Don't get me wrong, I still like and will eat at Pelon, or Tu y Yo or Tenoch, or Zocalo (I try a lot of Mexican places), but nothing has compared to the flavors here. The carnitas are so delicious, the mole so juicy you want to lick your hands, they have breakfast burritos, their salsa is unlike anything else I've eaten, the spicy option tastes good and won't just burn, everything tastes fresh. I know from working around here that the food business is competitive in the financial district, so I hope Villa Mexico continues with their success and stays for years to come. A few places have shut down and it would be a shame to lose a spot like this one. Pay them a visit if you want real Mexican food. read more

Stumbled into Villa Mexico while looking for someplace to eat in the Financial District after a full day of training and oh my I cant say that I could have landed anyplace better. I have not had authentic Mexican food outside of Mexico that was anything close to authentic, but Julie and her duaghter and their staff have changed all that. I honestly could have been on any Av in Roma Sur or Polanco sitting in any cafe having a meal. I had the carnitas tacos and came back the next morning for the chorizo burrito for breakfast. All I can say is this, if you like real authentic Mexican food, prepared with love and integrity, if you like people who will talk with you instead of at you, and you happen to be in Boston, go to Villa Mexico and tell Julie that Jonallen from San Diego says thanks and hello. read more

Have been going here since they opened near my office, the place is authentic and owned by Mexicans. That to me is a very good sign, because I am Hispanic and know each country's people make their own food best. I have tried: burritos, quesadillas, tacos, the desserts and the bowls. Of all of these I have been most surprised and obsessed with the bowls. It sounds simple, right, a burrito bowl? But, no, they make them in some amazing magical way because I have never tasted such good bowls anywhere, for real. Today I went in and they made a huge party for they 100th customer, which apparently they do every day and I was impressed by the customer care enough to finally write a review. This place literally serves the most disappointing burrito I have ever had. Despite having ordered steak, I received beef that more closely resembled Taco Bell beef than it did 'steak'. The only difference is that Taco Bell beef is no where nearly as greasy tasting. Enough about the poor meat they serve they don't even offer pinto beans when you get refried beans. This would be totally fine if they had some sort of disclaimer but it was basically just black beans, they weren't even blended in usual refried beans style. When I called thinking they had just gotten my order wrong their excuse is that this was more authentic. As a Mexican woman I can surely say that is not true. To make matters worse right after eating just half of the world's worst burrito me and all of my colleagues who ordered from this place ended up with food poisoning. They claim to be authentic mexican food but as someone who travels to mexico at least 6 times per year for work this food has nothing to do with authentic mexican food. Got the spicy chicken burrito, and it was among the most disappointing burritos I've ever had. The best thing was the spicy salsa, but everything else was all wrong: not enough rice or flavor in the rice, not nearly enough seasoning on the beans or chicken, beans and chicken were both dry and very overcooked, flour tortilla was too thick which threw off the ratio of starch:filling...a very disappointing initial bite that didn't get any better after I ate half of it before throwing it away. It reminded me of the type of burrito you get at a suburban pizza shop that suddenly decides to add a "mexican" section to its menu. If you're going to go here, I suggest ordering some of the more traditional offerings - they have mole poblano, flautas, and tamales on the menu - or for breakfast if you want something other than an egg and cheese sandwich. But for standard fare, Boloco (burritos, salads, smoothies) and Sabroso (quesedillas, tacos, burritos) are much better nearby options, and Pedro's tacos (fish tacos) is also a short walk away near DTC. Was excited to have an authentic Mexican option in the area, but honestly I don't think they'll be around for long. read more

This place was voted the best Burrito in Boston! If this is the best Boston you are in BIG trouble Boston. The place is very pricey at $11 for a burrito and a can of soda ($1.75). The portion size was are fine, but it was very obvious the chicken inside was reheated from yesterday's leftovers. Who serves white rice in a Mexican restaurant? Next time I am looking for Mexican food in Boston I will look for the nearest Chilis because this was down right awful. I have lived in San Diego and went to Mexico on a regular basis this isn't worth the time and not very authentic. I have been here a couple times now - it is DELICIOUS! The burritos are insane, one of the best I've ever had in the area.. probably ever. The way they grill them is mouth watering. I have had chicken and beef and both are exceptional. I went during lunch rush hour with a long line that moved quickly and a friendly worker taking my order - she was so sweet! Fair warning: the burrito is HEAVY. I'm talkin' you're carrying a football back to your office heavy. I finished the first half, and am currently debating whether or not to go back in on the second OR being so full I can't work the rest of the day (hey, it's worth the risk!). I am halfway through my pregnancy and will undoubtedly be back (with a justified excuse for now) to test out the rest of the menu and add to this review. My final points: 1. I never review food but felt compelled to share just how good my food and experiences were. 2. The chicken had absolutely no flavor to it. I got the Flautas and it was just dried, gross, shredded chicken. Maybe I came on a bad day, but regardless the food should be good all the time and my food was just not good. Also what Mexican places puts peas and carrots in rice? My office is very close to the restaurant and we waited for their opening for a long time. Now they have been in business for one year and it has been great to have them around. While I'm not a Mexican food addict, I do like their food quality. Not sure what is really authentic or not, what is clear is that the food is fresh, that's wonderful because eating fried food or sandwiches or pasta around here every day takes a toll on my stomach. In the mornings when I walk by I always see the huge pots on the stove and the people cooking everything. I get the burrito bowls, which are plentiful and tasty. Of the fillings I prefer the chicken and veggie, which has actual vegetables so if you want just rice and beans don't order "veggie." I also try the tacos and tostadas, light enough to eat them all but will keep you full past lunchtime. I also like that they have natural fruit drinks as an alternative to soda. read more

The first time I came here about two months ago I got food poisoning but I'm not one to hold grudges and this place is *sparkling* clean. I came here yesterday and got a standard steak burrito with guac and sour cream. It was pretty good, but not amazing. Each burrito place has their own unique flavor profile and I'm just not 100% into theirs. Everything seems really really fresh. I couldn't tell if they put mole or something in there... Maybe that's what I didn't like. Anyhow, $12 for a burrito is steep for a brand that has not been established. I'll be back every once in awhile when I wear out my usual spots. I have heard great reviews from a friend so I decided to bring my coworkers along to try this place. My coworker loved her tacos but said two was not enough. Three would have been perfect. I ordered a burrito with mole. I think it was a bit too much mole in my burrito so I didn't enjoy it too much since the ratio of mole to other stuff was like 80/20. At the end of my burrito there were only mole and no rice and beans and cheese. And where's the salsa?? Everyone else was raving about it. Bummed out I didn't get to experience the salsa. Villa Mexico makes the best rice and bean burrito in the world. I've never tried anything else there (except chips and salsa, also the best in the world) because all I ever want is that burrito- I actually dream about it. So disappointed!! After having just returned from Mexico and still craving authentic Mexican food I made my way to Villa Mexico. Pictures on FB, Twitter and Yelp had me super excited to try this place out. Well first off the door was wide open when it was in the 30's out. I asked if they could close while I ate my food but they said she could not as they were cooking peppers. My 4 year old daughter kept complaining how cold her hands were. My thoughts were to cook peppers on times there are no customers and to accommodate customers especially when it's cold. My husband who is Mexican American tried the Burrito while my daughter had the rice and beans. I wanted to order something but paused as they reheated the meat, rice and beans in the microwave!! I declined to order anything. If my food was going to get reheated I am not interested!! I cannot believe that they would throw it in the microwave right in front of the consumer! My husband was ready to walk out. I cannot say I blame him. We came to try some fresh Mexican food and got reheated food! My husband tried the burrito and said it was good despite the process. I guess what we wanted was FRESH and of course authentic Mexican food. It failed with the fresh part unfortunately! I also would have appreciated better customer service especially when a family of 3 comes in to purchase food. I like my food hot and being warm when I am eating and this place missed the mark. We had such high hopes! I would only consider returning to get the Jamaica though as I have not really been able to find in Massachusetts.
