I've been coming here for years. I'm typically there on Thursdays. Never had a wait to be seated. (Weekends are busier but I can't comment on how long a wait might be). I've never had any of the problems I see people writing about here. NO roaches, don't even think I've ever seen a fly or ant. Regarding the cash only, they have an ATM. There are other restaurants in the area that are far more expensive that are cash only such as Choates and Farnhams, and last I knew, Agawam was also cash only. This isn't something that just the VPH does. I love the ambiance. This is a true colonial house built in 1660 and always feels homey. I usually get breakfast and am a fan of their scrambled eggs. TRUE scrambled eggs that are light and fluffy. Not fried and then cut up or folded over into a square like McD's. Huge omelets. They also have an early bird breakfast menu with good choices, good prices until 11:00. I've tried different options and haven't had anything I didn't like. Good coffee too! I usually have to have decaf and theirs is good, but one time I forgot to specify decaf. I tried the regular coffee and had no issues. It was very good! Most of all, the staff! The owner is always there. She is the lovely lady that greets and seats everyone. If you ever experience an issue or have a question, do not hesitate to talk to her. She is very approachable. Their servers are excellent and they always get a nice crop of summer student help. Plenty of parking, and in nice weather, you can eat outside on the porch. I highly recommend! read more

I stopped by Village Pancake House for breakfast on Saturday morning. It was around 8:30am and it wasn't too crowded. The restaurant is a lot bigger than what you'd expect. The quick start comes with two eggs, potatoes, choice of bacon or sausage, fruit or warm apples, and toast. It was very filling. I wasn't a big fan of the fruit, it had a weird aftertaste for me. Everything else was good. Tip: they are cash only, so remember to have cash on hand if you're planning to stop by. read more

VPH is simply fabulous. Not just because the food is almost always good, but because the people who run it are great people. The menu is huge so you have to try things and find what you like. Some things, like in every restaurant, can be skipped. In my review, I'd like to highlight the turkey dinner. It's one of the best. Traditional, bountiful, and delicious. You won't regret it. I've tried many others in the area and they don't deliver. The place is historic, simple, and busting. The background music is right up my 60 year old alley... I love it. Cathy and Ed just can't be beat. They make everybody feel cared for and important, something hard to find these days. There are people who've been coming to this place their whole lives. Super cute quaint "New England" type of breakfast/brunch/lunch place. It is a house that turned into a restaurant. The decor and everything looks from the 1980s style like flower wallpaper and old wooden floors but that's what it makes it homey and welcoming. The waitress was very nice and friendly. She kept refilling our drinks and asked us if we needed anything else. I ordered the baked Hancock which came out very delicious. The biscuits and whipped butter was so so good. It tasted very fresh and homemade. I would eat their biscuits any day! The salad was okay. It was a very simple cheap looking salad but the Italian dressing made up for it. The dressing was very good. The mashed potatoes were kind of bland though. Not much flavor, salt, garlic or butter. Unfortunately I wouldn't get those again. I didn't take a picture but I tried their pancakes and usually I'm not a fan of them but this place really knows how to make them fluffy and thick - just the way l prefer. It tasted like homemade buttermilk pancakes, not like the ones you buy frozen and heat up. I used to love this place not sure what has happened here but today was a big disappointment, waited at least 30 mins to be seated and another 20 minutes before order was taken, then another 40 mins before I got my food, which was cold . The prices for two for breakfast were $ 38 without the tip. Nothing extravagant. Not even a sorry from the waitress for the food being cold. When we came home we both had tummy aches to top it off. this is a must stop place, if you're driving through Ipswich. If I lived on the North Shore, I be here every weekend! The staff is super friendly, remembering everybody's faces and many of the names. It seems the regulars here are more like family to them. The food is all handmade and exceptional even amongst other similar restaurants. These people will fawn over you till you feel like royalty. The only drawback is that the news is out. The restaurant is popular and so the line is long on the weekends for brunch. If you are starving and coming for brunch on Saturday or Sunday, maybe have a snack first? THE DEAL: Best pumpkin pancakes I've ever had! Old school pancake house with a rustic comfy feel. Busy menu with lots of delicious options. Potato pancakes were fantastic and our eggs were cooked perfectly. Got the most cliche awful fruit dish comprised of 80% honeydew with a couple grapes and a single piece of pineapple, haha. Service was a bit slow for our visit for whatever reason. People who were seated and ordered well after we did were served before us but the staff was very friendly. Cash only, fyi. This restaurant is hands-down the best breakfast place in New England! The pancakes are heavenly but everything here is great. We've been coming her for the last 12 years and have NEVER been disappointed. The service is awesome. Waitstaff are always attentive. Breakfast is their specialty but lunch is equally good. The Steer Burger or the Chicken Club sandwiches are great choices and the Pot Roast is amazing! For breakfast I would recommend any if the Benedict's but straight up bacon and eggs are always cooked to perfection. Don't forget to add a short-stack of the best pancakes you're ever going to find. Despite asking for WELL DONE Corned Beef Hash it was crispy on the outside and RAW inside! It was also the nastiest tasting CBH I have ever tried...ABSOLUTELY GROSS! The Home Fries were way undercooked and unseasoned/tasteless. The Blueberry Pancakes tasted like they were made with cake batter...overly sweet. They accept cash only which is very odd. We passed by The Agawam Diner on our way here and I am so sorry we didn't stop. However, I will never make that mistake again. read more

It's fast, bustling, and kind of wild on the weekends, so there may be a wait but you'll be seated promptly. My only irritation is the orange juice "large" is super tiny, maybe 10 floz? We've been going here a few years, a lot of things are done well. I made the mistake of getting a grilled cheese, it was horrible. Instead of sliced cheese, it was grated cheese. Which CAN be done right, but this wasn't even distributed across the sandwich. It was a clump in the middle. None of it melted properly, it was just a hard ball of chewy yecch. It's been several years since my last visit to this restaurant. From the road the house looks as lovely as ever. However, inside really could use an update... I detected a musty smell when entering. It really took over in the room we were seated in. Feeling my appetite wane from it, I still really wanted an order of the pancakes I remembered having. I was with 2 other companions, seated it seems way too close during this time with the pandemic. I also have to say that other than the mask the servers were wearing, I wasn't able to point out any other precautions or mandates ... Even the menu was the usual - not a one time use like I've been given at other establishments... And yes, when I picked mine up it was clear that they are not wiped down between uses. So here we were. I felt uneasy with 1st the musty odor. Secondly, no social distancing - sanitizer etc. I thought...what to do? I ordered a cup of coffee & an order of pecan pancakes. My dining companions ordered egg dishes along with bacon & other items. My coffee was hot without any bitterness - absolutely perfect ( I drink it black without sugar) . The pecan pancakes I ordered were fluffy, cake like and studded with a generous amount of the wonderful nuts. They were served with 2 containers of butter. Syrup was in a pitcher on the table... Ok, now I'm very sorry to have to write this but when I went to pick up the pitcher, the handle was sticky from previous pours - obviously not from our time spent at the table.... Yuck! Here we go again.... Appetite suppressant #2 or 3? My dining companions didn't say a word, but it was obvious we were all uneasy . I pushed my food aside... We started out with 1 server. Then a second .. they kept alternating which seemed odd. Between the two servers no one asked how our food was - or if we needed anything. When done? I didn't feel right leaving my uneaten food here. So I asked for a take out box which was brought over quickly. The bill came & it wasn't my imagination that we all silently paid it, left the tip no questions asked ..and took off! In sum: * With the pandemic we are very lucky that there are restaurants open & servers to serve us! This place s always busy. It's clear that many people love this restaurant. But it's definitely seen better days. I' myself am not comfortable with the cleanliness - or should I say non- cleanliness. This restaurant will never miss my patronage...
