I've lived in Winston for more than 10 years and we usually have an annual "anniversary" dinner at this restaurant. After yesterday, we will not be back. The crab cakes were terrible quality - undercooked and I found myself pulling crab shell out of my mouth more times than I could count. The caramelized onions in the chicken penne were HUGE and I had to cut or remove them entirely for my daughter to eat her pasta. While the restaurant was busy, it felt like they were rushing and quality was compromised. It was so loud in the main room of the restaurant, we were quite literally yelling across a small table to be heard. I would not recommend this restaurant for parties larger than 2 but based on the quality of food this go round, our family will no longer have anniversary dinners at this restaurant. read more

As always, a fantastic experience from start to finish. We were seated inside, with a view of a gorgeous fireplace and chandelier. We came at an unusual time -about 2:30pm- so we didn't have a wait, but they are usually pretty packed so keep that in mind if you come during peak hours. Our waitress, Stephanie, was one of the best waitresses I've ever had. She was ready with details and suggestions about the menu and gave us extra reassurance about their produce, due to the current outbreak going on. Our spring roll appetizer came with three delicious sauces and everything about them was perfection. For entrees, my husband had the Maryland crab cake and I had shrimp Hemingway. WOW. I tried a bite of the crab cake, and it's by far the best I've ever had. So fresh, and truly full of real crab, not just breadcrumbs and extras. My dish was wonderful, great size portion, and flavor was spot on. My only complaint was that it wasn't very hot, but it was still slightly warm. The dessert menu tempted us too much to resist and I have no regrets. The warm butter cake served with fruit and ice cream, and a sugary crust, was just phenomenal. I also ended my meal with a tavern cappuccino and it did not disappoint. If you're looking for a guaranteed positive experience, top tier food and service, look no further. We went Sunday around 2pm. This place stays packed! Unfortunately, they only have a brunch menu on Sunday until 4pm, so most of the items I wanted to try weren't available. The waiter was nice and attentive. The ambiance was great for a dinner night. We started with the crab dip. Very good and flavorful, I wish there was more crab meat in it. I ordered the burger, solid burger, nothing special. The margherita pizza was simply a cheese pizza with basil, very basic. I wish the brunch menu had some pastas on it! It's the kind of place I'd go to and wind down from a long day or a long week. Fantastic experience as always. I've went to the Village Tavern chain a few times and have had mixed experiences before. However, my visit to this particular location was spot on. We got seated right away, though we did have a reservation, which I feel is extremely necessary, especially on weeknights. Service was quick and friendly. As an appetizer, I got the hot crab dip. It was delicious and plenty to share between two people. As an entrée, I got the 10 spice glaze salmon, garlic mashed potatoes, and asparagus. I was really happy with how the asparagus was cooked to be just a little firm, and that it was a nice healthy size. No shoestring asparagus here! Had a nice lunch here recently. We had reservations at 1:45 and was greeted walking in and seated within a minute or so. All the staff were professional and friendly. A large restuarant, with seating inside and out, a dark heavy wooden interior. We opted for inside. Calamari for starts. It was a good start and well prepared with a sweet garlic dipping sauce. Served on nori sheets with sesame seeds. I went for the Baja fish tacos with french fries for my late lunch. Two flour tortilla shells, nicely batter fried fish with a slaw topping. The tacos were good, and the fries golden brown and freshly made. A solid lunch. This establishment has been around for years and is still popular and busy. We ordered the following: chicken and penne pasta, cowboy burger, strawberry citrus Paloma, and warm butter cake. Chicken penne has basil cream sauce. The pasta was cooked well, and the sauce was good. Could use a bit more salt to bring out the flavors more but overall, good effort. Would order again and try other pastas as well. The cowboy burger was supposed to be cooked to medium, but it was overcooked and dry. My fiancé also didn't like the barbecue sauce so would not get again. The strawberry Paloma was sickly sweet, probably won't get again. The warm butter cake needed more flavor inside. The fruit was delicious, and ice cream had good flavor. But the star of the dish left something to be desired. Won't order again. But interested in the double decker cheesecake, so if we go back, I'll try that next. Overall, we want to like the place so will likely return while we're in town but noting what they seem to be good at and not so much. The service was good. I love getting the shrimp and grits from here and it's the best I've ever had. The flavor of the bacon and mushrooms together are immaculate. I had the pleasure of dinning here on Wednesday night. Was traveling for work and my colleagues and I needed dinner. This place did not disappoint. Although a lil loud at times-it was a great ambiance. I had the 16oz prime rib, a wedge salad, and French onion soup. My meal was delicious. Our service was incredible as well. Ok so In order to use up the last of my amex credit I chose to stop here on my way home as I was driving through winston to grab a few kids meals for the kids(and me) we all got grilled chicken, green beans and either French fries or mashed potatoes. For a kids meal the portion was huge and these were some of the most well seasoned chicken breast I've had. It's been a minute since I've been to village tavern and it was absolutely delicious. The crab cake was one of the best I've had in the area and I wish I'd gotten the meal. The spring rolls were loaded with chicken and I loved them with the sweet Thai chili. The Thai chicken salad is a go to for me. I tried the firecracker shrimp for the first time. It was the sweet thai chili sauce which I love and didn't have much spice but they were incredible. My husband got the prime rib sandwich and it looked incredible. The whole meal was a 12/10 for me. Came back for a nice work dinner and had a great time. Pre fix menu so I got the tavern salad, shrimp and grits, and crème brûlée cheesecake. Service was a little slow with drinks (to be fair it was a party of 20+ people) so I accidentally got served two French pear martinis but we made them disappear! I tried the spicy jalapeño margarita too and that had a nice kick to it. It was packed for a Monday night at 6pm and the function room where we were seated had at least two other large groups. A medium sized groups of us came in for my mother's birthday on a Sunday afternoon. Village Tavern has a solid reputation, so I was pleased that she chose this spot. Because there were more than a handful of people, I won't cover everything that was served. I did implement the "dad tax" on a couple of kids, and my granny gave me a bite of her meatloaf, so I can at least say I tasted half the table. First of all, we were waited on by Sydney, who was amazing. I did encounter a couple of other staff that helped as well, and all of them were attentive as expected. I ordered a gastropub burger -medium rare- with sweet potato fries. It was very good. Juicy and tasty. The sweet potato fries were dusted with a sugar, which is fine, but I prefer them salted. Not bad, but not the best I've had. The honey-mustard sauce was good too, middle of the road, not super mustardy. I tried the regular fries too, and they were some of the best I've had recently. Crunchy with the right amount of salt. My wife had chicken and waffles, which was good. Real maple syrup (as far as I can tell). One of the kids had a pepperoni lunch pizza - wood fired. Excellent dough. For a pepperoni pizza, this was really good. And of course meatloaf with mushroom gravy, green beans and mashed poh-taters. Tasty comfort food that I could eat all day. One downside is sitting under the tent-covered area in the back while it's raining. They should probably have someone go through the roof of that thing once a year and patch. Last night's order; however, was a clear difference in quality & quantity. The only way to see veggies was to remove the bun; otherwise, it appeared as a plain cheeseburger. I ate at the Village tavern on Sat night. I've been a few times but it's not a regular place we dine. When I do go I usually order the crab cakes because they're delicious. Saturday I decided to try something different. I got the maple glazed pork chop with garlic mashed potatoes, apple chutney, and I subbed the green beans with mac n cheese. While we waited on our food I ordered an espresso chiller. Skrewball whiskey, oat milk, cold brew coffee, and a salted cinnamon syrup. Holy moly was that good. We ordered the hot crab dip so I snacked on that and drank my drink. When the waitress brought our food out my jaw dropped. This pork chop was almost 2 inches thick. I knew immediately I wouldn't be able to finish it. It had perfect grill marks and a delicious maple glaze that had just a slight peppery kick at the end. It was cooked to perfection. The garlic mashed potatoes were delicious as was the mac n cheese. I have never had a pork chop that big and even the staff said that might have been the biggest they've ever served. It was busy but that's because it was a Sat night and we were dining at peak time. The decor is very warm and inviting. Even though the dining room was packed it wasn't extremely loud. Alright, so let's get into it. I've been a huge fan of the Village Tavern in Greensboro for years so I was extremely excited to try this one. Especially for Sunday brunch. I mean, how could one NOT be excited about a Brie and bacon omelette. Well, as excited as I was, I was unfortunately let down. It was majorly lacking flavor. I mean, I know Brie is a milder cheese. But I was hoping to get the creaminess of it, and that just wasn't there. The bacon was crispy and provided saltiness and fattiness. But over all, the omelette was disappointing. Ever since I was a child , this was my favorite place to go for special occasions or my birthday , I haven't been in several years and last experience wasn't the best . Unfortunately this time wasn't any better which is very sad to say . I ordered the tuna sashimi for an appetizer and it was horriable to thick of cut , fishy taste and for $18 the sauces and "salad" with it all were nasty and only a few pieces of tuna . I have this at another food chain and was amazing so had high hopes but had to force my self and Gaf down a few bites just so I didn't waist $18 . Got a blue moon draft and beer was old and no orange slice . I got the pimento cheese bacon burger and it was so soggy I had to eat with a fork no flavoring to the meat and the pimento cheese was just hot soupy mess and bacon burnt , my wife had gotten the shrimp and grits and she said the shrimp was fishy and nothing like you would get at the coast and wasn't happy and we barely made it home before she was in the bathroom . For a $100 meal I'm extremely disappointed in our food the quality and the waiter was terrible and couldn't care less that we were even there . I typically try not to leave reviews that are more negative than positive, but this is now the third time that I've been to Village Tavern in recent months and have been disappointed. I would like to start by saying that the wait staff are not the disappointment, it's the food, the kitchen, and sometimes the managers. The issue may be back in the kitchen, but the upfront staff are always wonderful, welcoming, and a joy to be served by. On this most recent visit, my friend and I split a cowboy burger with fries, a spring roll appetizer and 1Mule from the bar. The burger was perfectly cooked and tasted good, but it had been left to sit long enough that the cheese had started harden and it wasn't hot anymore. The fries were almost stale and certainly not hot. And the spring rolls were tasty, but weird. They put chicken in their spring rolls and the chicken was really dry. Of the three sauces offered for spring rolls, we had specifically asked for the peanut sauce and the soy sauce and no sweet-and-sour sauce... They only brought us sweet-and-sour sauce. I know our waitress wrote the sauce request down correctly because I saw her do it. Our waitress was super fast in giving us the right sauce for the spring rolls! The floor manager delivered our food and asked if we needed anything both my friend and I asked for sauces which he never brought back. If you have no intention of bringing things back, don't ask if the table needs anything, just to say, "enjoy your meal" and walk away. The drink from the bar was super good! It was full, it was flavorful, and it was delicious! I did appreciate that the kitchen cut our split burger in half and divided our fries onto two separate plates. That was a nice touch. Our bill after what we ordered, plus tip was $53. When you're spending that kind of money for food that's not hot, tastes stale, and dry... and we split the entrée, it's a little extra disappointing. read more

It was just as I remembered it more than 20 years ago as a student at Wake Forest. I was shocked to be seated so quickly during peak dining hours on a Friday night. Hubby and I were seated on the back side of the fireplace which was perfect on one of the coldest nights of the year so far. Wendy was the absolute best server we could have had. She was so attentive to us and bubbly. Definitely ask for her. As a student, I would always get the hot crab dip so it was a must. It tasted the exact same as I remembered! The dip is super creamy and rich, filled with the sweetest crab meat and accompanied by buttery toast. Forget your diet on this one and it's worth it. I had that and spring rolls as my dinner. The spring rolls are really tasty and come with three dipping sauces. The sweet chili Thai was my personal favorite with a perfect blend of sweet and heat. This was our first trip to Village Tavern after having lived in Winston for five years. We should not have waited so long. Our server was Kaylay (I think was the spelling). She was very good. She knew the menu and offered suggestions, kept our glasses full, and was attentive without interrupting our conversation. The fish tacos my wife had were excellent. I had crab cakes. The were outstanding. The crab was fresh with no hint of the fishy smell or taste you might find at lesser restaurants. We dined on a Friday night. The restaurant was full when we left at around 7:30. We had reservations for 6:00 and there was no one waiting at that time. One "complaint" I have with most restaurants these days is that they are so loud. I have a feeling this is social engineering of some kind. Other than that, the atmosphere was great. But I can't remember eating at a restaurant of this type that wasn't that way. Maybe, just maybe, I'm getting old (as indicated by the use of the Oxford comma above). Over the years I've eaten at all 3 Triad locations of the NC based upscale dining chain headquartered here. Whether you are looking for a relaxing lunch, an upscale dinner options with a varied menu and nice bar choices, or an interesting brunch with contemporary dishes as well classic breakfast comfort food, this spot will meet your needs! My favorites here are: Fish & Chips, Prime Rib, French Onion Soup, Calamari, and Clam Chowder - but there is little here that you'll go wrong ordering. This location, especially the bar area, doesn't have the old school comfort of the original spot in Reynolda, nor the more relaxed atmosphere of the one in Greensboro - not that this is an unpleasant experience. The food here is certainly not inexpensive, but the consistent quality somewhat negates the price and the less than robust portion sizes. read more
