Our good and faithful restaurant across the way just happened to be closed today sadly enough, so we decided to venture out and try Vinh Chau - much to our disappointment. When we first walked in, we were greeted by a slight "off-ness" in the air. We should have known right then, but we proceeded. We ordered the fresh spring rolls, which were pretty status quo. They seem to be standard no matter what Vietnamese restaurant you patron. Problem was not a minute or two after we got them, we were abruptly approached by our pho... mid-bite. I just wish people would wait to bring out our meals until we are actually finished with the appetizer we just ordered...I don't think that is too much to ask as that is the definition of appetizer, right? Trying to thank our server was difficult as the fresh spring rolls were filled with pig skin, which was very elastic in texture making it difficult to speak and eat at the same time. Now we are out of water, and yes you guessed it...they don't offer refills of water. That said, we delve into our pho. The price was cheaper ($7.50) then the traditional price ranging from $9-$10 elsewhere. That's because the bowl is smaller...don't be fooled. I ordered my typical shrimp "pho" (although it goes by another name when it is seafood "pho") which allows me to compare businesses on a level playing field. First thing I notice is that they must have gotten their shrimp sizes mixed up and maybe lost count in the difficult task of boiling pre-made chicken stock. They were small, shriveled and there were only four of them (a blessing in disguise after I ate one of them). They reminded me of what happens when you linger in the bathtub too long...all shriveled up and water logged. Eating them wasn't a pleasant experience either - too tough for my liking. The broth was quite clear, with very little taste. Even adding an abundance of hoisin sauce I didn't achieve the flavor I was looking for. Halfway through the soup and we still have no water. I see other patrons in the restaurant poking their head up trying to capture the attention of the two workers playing trashcan basketball in hopes of a getting a splash of water. When I was finally able to grab their attention, it quickly came to light that everyone else was looking for the same thing...just give the people some water please and thank you! So we are finishing up our meal when we witness them give wrapped up left overs to a take-out patron who looked at them with a "cocked" head as if to say could this really be mine...I thought I ordered so much more? The exchange was made and the situation rectified, but seeing that this is a small restaurant with limited customers, one would think they would be able to keep that straight. So ambiance. Quiet, so you could talk to your dinner partner, relaxing, if you could get over the awkward smell, but you were deceived if you thought the condiments on the table were clean. No dribbles, check. You think to yourself, nice, until you pick a bottle up that is and you realize that they feel slimy. Hard to describe, so lets leave it at gross. So overall, not the worst, but certainly not the best. At a minimum, one I won't be visiting again. The value added lesson learned for the day...check the hours of your favorite restaurant before going out of your way only to find they are closed. read more

A fortunate discovery. While Pho Saigon is good, and more upscale looking, I stopped i@Vinh Chau on a day that they were closed...... Instant convert. Fresh rolls are very fresh. Pho is awesome! Spicy Chicken Lemongrass Soup caused my scalp to sweat.... OH YEAH!. Interesting specials that I'll have to experience. Friendly service. If only the kids would put their phones away while at work. Owner as the cordial host, while his wife is at the stove. Frequented by SPD, a vote of confidence in my book. read more

This is my favorite place to get pho! It's amazing! The location is not the best area of the city, but its worth it for the taste.

When it comes to Pho I am always looking that certain something in the broth. Either a place has it or it doesn't, and if it has it then I am always left craving more of it. Vinh Chau Pho Tai was very good, but it was missing that "have to have more" quality. The serving size and quality was good. If Pho Saigon wasn't across the street this place would be our next pick. Their chicken fried rice is very good and highly recommended. I would definitely say check this place out, there are so many Vietnamese places in the X that you just have to give each a whirl and see which one strikes your fancy. I wouldn't turn down Vinh Chau by any means, but it slides in as a close second if the choice is up to me. read more

A traditional Vietnamese hidden gem. Friendly staff and very delicious food. I really enjoyed their fried egg rolls.

This is a lovely family run restaurant without any ethnic kitsch. The food is excellent. Restaurant is clean. The owner and his family could not try any harder to please without being intrusive. The neighborhood, however, is marginal and caution should be taken not to park too far from the restaurant. The tables are little too small for the large size of their plates and bowls. The food and the chef/family get five stars but the ambience and restaurant experience need to be a little bit more polished as their competitors across the street. It is noteworthy, however, that most of the patrons were well-dressed middle-class and upper-middle-class Vietnamese-Americans. Most of the patrons at their competitor across the street were white urban white collar types. read more

Have eaten here with friends many times ,but last night we had our first bad meal.The meat in our spicy chicken and vegetable stir fry tasted distinctly freezer burned,not edible.The owner would not talk to us about it,did not acknowledge there was any problem,would not take the dish off our bill. We went last weekend in the middle of snowstorm for lunch. In spite of the snow, people were constantly coming in for takeout. We had recently been to Pho Saigon and had liked it a lot. But, I honestly say that I preferred Vinh Chau. Of course it could be the different meals that we had, but I especially liked the Pho Special. It was excellent. The young waiter was very friendly and willing to suggest 'what was the favorite meal' there. Parking can be difficult I would imagine if you went on a busy weekend evening. read more

I really like rice with grilled chicken thigh at this place. The chicken thigh is so tender and delicious!!! lemon grass flavor with fish sauce is a perfect combo. As a vietnamese, fish sauce runs in my blood. I truly believe its the most delicious sauce in the entire world. Some of the best Pho I've ever had. Delicious, flavorful broth with a heaping portion of noodles and fresh veggies. I wish they also had dry chili flakes along with the chili sauce, but I can look past that considering the flavors in the pho broth were so good. Staff was very attentive, which is sometimes a rarity at Vietnamese restaurants. Super friendly service and they were able to accommodate my special request for beef broth with just noodles and vegetables. All of the other food that came out of the kitchen looked amazing, especially the stir-fry. Can't wait to go back and try some more from the menu! read more

Vinh Chau easily is the best place for pho around. Portion size is great, the broth is amazing, and the meat always seems as fresh as it can be. Top it off with a very friendly wait staff and owner and you can't get much better. The selling point for me is the hot chili oil available at your table. The owner said he makes it himself with only 5 ingredients he specially orders. Can't get much better than that. I can only vouch for the beef pho and fresh spring rolls being amazing but every other dish I've seen looks amazing too. If you haven't been yet give it a try! read more

I will never go back there. They told me if I wanted more than 3 small pieces of lime that I would be charged 25 cents per piece and also for basil. No wonder why that place is empty and pho Saigon is always full. Not to mention the waiter had no knowledge of the menu. If you want an all around better experience, go to pho Saigon right across the street where the prices are reasonable, customers get amazing quality and aren't charged for water. I took my hubby here on two occasions and loved it! A hidden gem in the Springfield area. The pork clay pot is my favorite! Pho is outstanding, best around. The house fried rice has so much flavor, and is a HUGE portion. Also comes with homemade soy sauce. Service is always friendly and accomodating. My husband loves Pho, so we have been to many Pho restaurants over the years. This place is definitely at the top of our list. Not only is the broth delicious, the portions are big and the price is low. If you're debating between here and Pho Saigon across the street, and you are not trying to impress your date/company, you should choose Vinh Chau every time, because the food itself is much better. But if you want smaller portions in a nicer setting and don't mind Americanized pho for higher prices, then I suggest you go to Pho Saigon instead. read more

Had lunch here today with a friend and I must say the PHO broth was in my top three. I have been to well over at least 45-50 Vietnamese Restaurants in my life even across the street but this little gem makes the best bone broth I've had in a long time. The owner was very very nice communicated well and even introduced me to his lovely wife what a clean, petit, orderly establishment they run I am very proud of them for all their effort and hard work I mean they even decorated the place very nicely and their bathroom was spotless. The older gentleman that ran the place was a character and definitely made the place what it is. He came by several times to check on us and make sure everything was good. Had fresh spring rolls, pho and bun here tonight. Portions were enormous. Flavors were fresh, light and exciting. It's a hole in the wall with street parking, but the restaurant itself is cozy and well-lit and the employees are friendly and helpful. The menu is large to the point of overwhelming, especially when you're not completely familiar with Vietnamese cuisine. But something tells me that everything here is good. read more
