I went to Virgil's as a party of 4 for brunch on a Sunday. My food was good and everyone else said that enjoyed their's as well. I also feel like the prices were appropriate for the portion sizes. That was the only positive thing about our visit. Service was EXTREMELY slow, it took 20 minutes for waters. An even longer wait for food followed by another few minutes for hot sauce and lemon slices. For a restaurant with a 2 hour table/validated parking limit I'd expect faster service. Questions about cross contamination with allergens were met with a blank stare and shoulder shrug. The DJ was great but the music was way too loud and made it hard to hear each other. 20% auto grat is included for all checks over $100 according to the menu, but it should say all parties or something similar as it's determined by what the table spends. This was even more annoying considering the lackluster service we received. He did remove the automatic gratuity from my check, but it was only $10 due to a special so I'm sure that was only accommodated since the tip was $2. read more

This was our first time here, and it was a recommendation from the front lobby staff at our hotel. The place exudes a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with a clean and well-maintained interior and exterior. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating options. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The bartender crafted some of the most delicious drinks we've ever had, and the food was equally impressive, bursting with flavor. But, I won't get into a long story about my rating but I will instead highlight 3 my biggest pros and cons Pros 1.) the food was good. Really good. They weren't stingy on the portions. Nice and different options on the menu. Awesome food 2.) our waitress (Alycia) was awesome. Great service. She was a delight. Even the manager (Miko) was cool and addressed our issues expeditiously and graciously. 3.) the decor and how the restaurant is decorated and set up is cool. It's 2 floors. Each floor has its own balcony. It's a small establishment but they did a lot with little room. Cons 1.) the music was loud. Some people may like to have music playing during dinner but I couldn't even hear the people around my table...and we were seated outside on the front porch. 2.) the hostess was very nonchalant. We had been seated, had our drinks and appetizers ordered when he asked us move to another table to accommodate another party. That move was very unwelcoming. First impression visit at 5:30PM on a sunday. Large black and white sign with a large front patio and balcony. Located in a suite next to Paloma. There is a parking lot right next door. Not sure if you have to pay- I did not and my car was fine. We got the deviled crab eggs, fried green ma'tis, afta church plate, smoth'ad poke chop, geechee pasta, fried fish, and the slammin salmon. An appitizer, two entrees, and 2 non-alcoholic drinks cost about $100.00 with tip. Pros Great food and great service. The food was hot, fresh, and seasoned to perfection. The restaurant was able to accomdate my large party with alternative seating due to the loud music being played. I appreciate them acknowledging the problem and doing their best to help solve the issue. Cons As stated before, the music is very loud. Especially upstairs. We had a reservation at Virgil's and really appreciated the complimentary parking. The restaurant itself is nice, though a bit tight in size. We were seated upstairs, and since it was a Sunday night the music was lively. As the DJ got going, the volume made it a little hard to carry on conversation with my guests. Our server (who was also the upstairs bartender) was wonderful--attentive and friendly. We ordered the Afta Church Plate with fried chicken, greens, mac and cheese, and yams. The greens were definitely the standout! I should've asked for the chicken without sauce (it tasted like a hot honey glaze), which wasn't quite my preference. I went to Virgil's with a group of 9 people. We had a reservation for 11:30, and when we arrived, we were seated right away. Zachary was our server, and he was awesome. He didn't take long to come over and greet us. He started by taking our drink and appetizer orders. We orderd a bunch of different appetizers and drinks. For starters, we ordered the bussin' corn muffins, fried green tomatoes, Gullah eggrolls, and the Sol-E-Gre crab cakes, which we shared. Everything came out quickly, fresh, and hot. My favorites were the corn muffins and the crab cakes. Zachary took our entree orders. We all picked different things. I went with the skrimp n' grits with crab, and I had the gravy on the side. It was really good, and I was able to take some home. Since there were so many of us, the gratuity (20%) was already included. I also liked that we could pay separately, which was a big plus for a group that size. Overall, the visit to Virgil's was great. I look forward to visiting again in the future. Thoroughly enjoyed this place. I came for the happy hour special mid week for a reconnect with some friends. I ordered almost everything off the happy hour menu. I enjoyed everything except the deviled eggs did leave me wanting for more. The wings were really good. I probably should've ordered an extra plate of those. I also got the margarita flight while they were still on special. My favorite was the blackberry. They were all very good. The flavors come true compared to some places where you can tell there's only a little bit of the flavoring. This was a perfect mix so I wasn't too sweet, but you could still taste some of the alcohol. So it was not giving water down juice. They had karaoke on this night so we did leave the downstairs patio where we were initially seated and went upstairs to enjoy karaoke. However, if you do go upstairs (moving form your original seating) , be prepared to possibly not have as much seating we did leave downstairs where we were at earlier in the evening; because again as I mentioned, we were there for happy hour by the time we got upstairs a lot of the seating was reserved so we were moved out of the seats that we were at to accommodate for the reservations. We ended up on the patio outside until a friend of ours chose to do karaoke we were able to come in and stand around to support and record . Overall, I do believe they also have specials I believe the night we were there. They had $100 bottles of tequila. I cannot remember which brand. But it was announced over the audio where they were doing karaoke that they didn't have bottle specials. It was a good midweek, happy hour vibe . I probably would come back with a smaller group I believe initially it was about seven of us. I probably would come back with it just about one or two people so we could really vibe and have a little bit more wiggle room larger parties are harder to accommodate and move around. I would also like to come back for brunch, so hopefully I am able to go to brunch and give an updated review but definitely try the wings . everyone was very accommodating. I ordered the salmon and husband ordered a Couple of the 1/2 happy hour meals and $15 flight. The food Was fair to food. Salmo was garnished with a Cream sauce and corn was good. Came here for dinner with friends and the vibes were great. My drink, Ladylike, was delicious. We shared the sampler platter which serves 2-4 and it was a great array of their different appetizers which were all flavorful. I enjoyed the Gullah and Geechee sauces served with the platter. For my entree I got the slammin sammen and the salmon was seasoned great. It came with with geechee corn, rice and a crab cream sauce and garnished with a fried shrimp and oyster. The corn was a perfect accompaniment to this dish. The crab cream sauce had a great flavor but the crab was nowhere to be found. My dish also didn't get enough sauce nor the shrimp or oyster initially but that was remedied when I brought it the server's attention. There was a DJ playing a great selection of songs. One complaint sitting upstairs is the music was just a touch too loud, not sure if it was as loud downstairs. It was very hard to hear my server and tablemates. Our server, I believe her name was Marie, appeared to doubling as a bartender but was still very attentive. I appreciate authenticity and execution. Stepping into Virgil's Gullah Kitchen & Bar felt like entering a thoughtfully curated space. It is a genuine, vibrant love letter to the Gullah Geechee culture, shown through its food and drinks. I came hungry and started with two appetizers that immediately showcased the kitchen's skill: the BUSSIN' CORNMUFFINS (Sweet Potato Puree/Honey/Butta Drizzle) - these are not your standard dry cornbread. The texture was light, the sweet potato puree provided a sophisticated, earthy sweetness, perfectly complemented by the honey and butter drizzle. A great start; and the Gullah Eggrolls (Red Rice/ Fried Cabbage/ Skrimp) - this is smart, elevated comfort food. The eggrolls were crisp, holding a savory, well-seasoned filling of traditional Lowcountry red rice, tender fried cabbage, and perfectly cooked "skrimp" (shrimp). They were an excellent fusion of textures and flavors. For the main course, I selected the SLAMMIN' SAMMEN (Blackened Salmon/ Jasmine Rice/ Geechee Fried Corn/ Crab Cream Sauce/ Garnished wit' a Fried Oystuh & Skrimp). This dish was a masterpiece of layering and balance. The salmon was blackened flawlessly--tender, moist, and deeply seasoned with a perfect crust. It sat atop a bed of fragrant Jasmine rice that skillfully absorbed the rich Crab Cream Sauce. The sauce itself was luxurious, velvety, and intensely flavorful without being heavy. The plate was crowned with Geechee Fried Corn for sweetness and crunch, and the presentation was elevated with a garnish of a fried oystuh and skrimp. The dish was harmonious, utilizing all components effectively. It was simply delicious. Zero notes. The restaurant space is impressive. It is pretty large, offering ample seating indoors across the main level and an upstairs area, as well as a decent outside area. The decor is rich, warm, and inviting, fostering a comfortable and buzzing atmosphere. The size makes it suitable for both intimate dinners and larger groups. Ordered through uber eats and it was not good. Got the seafood pasta and they sent it without crab and shrimp it only had sausage. Actually had to go up to the establishment to get the right order, which of course defeats the purpose of uber eats so I was rightfully pissed. Smothered chicken was ok, it had this weird taste that I can't quite put my finger on, it was like the pan was scorched and it tasted burned. Overall, would not go back. I was visiting Atlanta for work and had the opportunity to visit Virgil's for a work dinner. My group and I had the best time and my only regret is that it's so far away and I'm not able to eat here regularly! The staff is absolutely lovely and very attentive without being smothering. There was one person in our party with food allergies and they were able to thoroughly answer questions about the menu and modified dishes to accommodate the allergies. The presentation of every dish we ordered was beautiful. I had the shrimp and crab with grits and would highly recommend this dish. While we did not participate, they were also having a karaoke contest while we were there and also mentioned that they serve brunch on weekends, which I have no doubt is delicious and fun. read more

My first time here. Brought family that came from out of town so it was all of our first time. First off my niece and I were majorly disappointed off rip because they were out of sweet tea--a southern staple. I never understood how restaurants can run out of sweet tea down here :( but the rest of the experience made up for it. I really only gave 4 stars because of that. I wanted to get an AP. Anyway, we decided to order the appetizer sampler with the gullah eggrolls, shrimp, deviled eggs, and salmon bites. All very very good. I LOVED the gullah eggrolls. For my entree I got the geechee pasta (chicken sausage, crab meat, shrimp) and it was very tasty. See pic below. I'm a pasta lover so it was a no brainer that I'd order that. my niece has fried cabbage and yams--she liked them. My o er family members all got the after church plate--VERY VERY GOOD, and HUGE portions. Everyone had leftovers and couldn't finish. It came with 4 wings, mac&cheese, yams, and greens. The greens were my fav (a liiiiiittle salty but tolerable). Our waiter was nice. He was balancing making drinks and waiting on our table. Overall this place has a cool vibe. We incidentally went on karaoke/trivia night and I actually won trivia 2x and got 2 free shots. And despite there being a parking lot that says you have to pay, it's free to park there. Don't quote me on weekends or during brunch hours. I can't remember what the nice gentleman said about the free parking as far as hours or when it is free (idk if it's all the time or just on weekdays), but that was a pleasant surprise being that this is Atlanta. I visited Virgil's on a Friday night it was extremely busy. We planned ahead and had made a reservation so we were seated right away. The restaurant is on the smaller size so the ambiance is more loungey than fine dining. I started off with the cornbread which was delicious! It is not your typical cornbread, it is more sweet than savory but super fluffy. I would pair this with a savory dish for a knockout experience. I also tried the she crab soup which was a little salty but flavorful! It was also a perfect portion size. Lastly I tried the Afta church plate which was also great. I wish it came out a little hotter but the flavor was all there! The only downside to my experience was the music. There was a dj performing, and the music was way too loud for the small space. It was hard for me to talk with my friends while eating or even hear my server. Overall I would recommend this restaurant, but if the loud music is not your style, just grab your food to go! This is definitely one of those places that I will go back to! I came here for my friends 30th birthday and we had a large party of around 25 people and I feel like the servers did a good job on managing our large party (on top of a private party that was happening upstairs). With that, the restaurant is a little smaller/cozy! I know some people will like that vibe while others won't so keep that in mind! And again, i'm coming from the perspective of being apart of such a large party. I heard the upstairs is beautiful & fun so next time I definitely want to opt into sitting up there if it's available. I can imagine going during a beautiful fall afternoon or evening and taking advantage of the outdoor seating. With that in mind, MAKE A RESERVATION. They had a DJ there which I haven't been the biggest fan of lately (not the actual DJ, she was amazing and played the best music). Everyone may have their own opinion of a DJ inside a restaurant and for me, I notice the music can get so loud & it's difficult to converse and connect with the people in your party at your table. Again, personally I'm not a fan of having to talk extremely loud or yell when trying to have conversation with someone sitting directly across or next to me. I know this is common in the Atlanta culture and I love music myself, just at a moderate level when I'm having dinner with friends and family (especially if it's before 10pm) As far as parking, there is a lot next to the establishment that I overheard a host saying the first 2 hours are free. However, I didn't see where I would be able to get a free two hours and I had already paid for parking before entering the restaurant anyway but keep that in mind :) Now let's get into the food! Sooooo flavorful and taste good! I wasn't the biggest fan of the cornbread muffins and it's not because they weren't good, it's only because I didn't expect it to taste the way it did. I am looking forward to trying the Crab Deviled Eggs next time as my appetizers. The food all looks and sounds good so it may be hard for you to choose but highly recommend that if it's your first time going like me, to get their popular dish, the "Afta Church Plate." My friends and I wanted some soul food while visiting this area and came here based off the reviews on Yelp. The patio area is well lit but inside is dimmed. I thought it was a bit hard to see what I'm eating but I think that's the vibes. It took some time for the waiter to stop by our table. We were pretty hungry. The good thing is food came out very fast! I had the Smotha'd Chicken and Unc Bread Puddin' with sweet tea. I wasn't sure if it would be rude of me to ask for gravy on the side instead of on top of the fried chicken. I like my fried chicken crispy. With the gravy on top it became mushy quickly. I'd love to try hookah here next time if we had more time to stay out. Restroom, unfortunately, was not very clean. But I had to go so I cleaned it up myself a bit. We came here for dinner on a Saturday night and I was able to join the waitlist ahead of time on Yelp. It was a spur of the moment decision so I am glad we had this option. The lot next door says it is paid, but the people at the restaurant said you didn't have to pay. Not sure if it was because it was the weekend. We were seated immediately upstairs and the music was loud! I did appreciate the 90s R&B playlist though :) The menu was big, and had a lot of great options at reasonable prices. I got the Geechee pasta and it had a decent amount of crab. The shrimp were big too and the overall portion was huge. It was a bit too salty for my taste and I am not sure if it was just this dish, or if all gullah food tends on the salty side.
