I took my car in because my AC wasn't working and blowing out hot air. I had a AC leak that needed to get fixed. I left my car with them overnight and picked up my car the next day being that my AC was fixed. $479 dollars later, It was blowing out cold air and worked that night. The next day, I went for a drive and my car was blowing out hot air again. I gave Matt (owner) a call to let them know what is going on with my car, but they are closed for weekends. Monday comes around and I have still not recieved a phone call till that afternoon. They informed me to bring the car in, so I did. Well Tuesday afternoon comes around and I still have not received a phone call about my car. I give them a ring and they inform me that the bolt for the condenser doesn't fit and will need to buy a new AC condenser. They inform me that "if I need wheels", I can pick up my car to drive and they will work on getting a quote for condenser. It has been 4 days and still haven't gotten a phone call about a quote. The major problem I have with these con artists is that they are supposed to be mechanics. They threaded the condenser bolt in 1/4 of the way and thought it was in all the way. I then should of gotten a phone call before they went any further, but they "thought the bolt was in all the way". When I took back the car after AC didnt work the next day, they caught the fact that the bolt wasn't able to go in any further. Anyone that has ever screwed any bolts in to anything would know that it would fit or not. Not only was I scammed on the whole job, I still have yet to get a phone call! DO NOT GO HERE! read more

What can I say. They are honest mechanics I know it is a rarity!!! I have had my car served numerous times from them. Every time they have been upfront and honest about what needs to be fixed immediately and what can wait to be fixed. What is also cool is that they will drop you off home and pick you up once your vehicle is ready!! If you do drop off enough money on your repairs they do have your vehicle washed and cleaned for free. Which is also cool is that they don't nickel and dime you to death. For small things like broken light bulbs they replaced them for just the cost of the bulb. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs a repair. read more

They like telling you that no "good" shop can give you an estimate without first doing a thorough diagnosis - at a cost of about $130 per hour. If pressed, they'll give you some stupid answer like "it could be $150 or it could be $5,000, we don't know. They like saying that a 'real' brake job will cost about $900 and that the brake places don't do it right. - BS. Have any of you ever had a problem with your $400 brake job at the brake place? I don't know much about cars but I do know that the people who work at Virginia Auto really care about their customers. Matt, especially, has gone above and beyond what was expected to help me out. Last week my car broke down on the side of the road in Austin, TX, and I had no one to help me. The road side assistance card I was given during my Groupon I had used a few months prior was expired and I had forgotten to get a new one. I called Matt and he stayed on the phone with me for over an hour trying to get a hold of someone to come and pick me up. He eventually found a truck to get me, free of charge, and then sent me the new road side assistance card the next day. He knew that I was living in Austin and would probably never bring my car back to his shop for repairs but he still did everything he could to help me out. We recently moved a few blocks from here and they always have a ton of cars out front so, decided to give them a try. After setting up an appointment for an oil change, which apparently is just an appointment to drop off your car, not for the oil change itself, I brought my vehicle to them for the oil change. During the intake I explained there were some other concerns with the vehicle surrounding the suspension. The guy who helped me was nice enough, but when he was done with the intake stuff I asked how much for the oil change and tire rotation. Apparently it was going to be around $170. A little confused I asked what that amount entailed. He quickly said there was a fee for evaluating the vehicle. This is certainly something I have not encountered before, previous mechanics will tell me what is wrong without charging, because then I can get the work done and they can charge for labor and parts. This was something even the dealership gets right, they'll charge $40 for an evaluation, but then let you apply that to work performed. If that option was available here, it was never mentioned. Furthermore, there was some sort of mumbo-jumbo about wheel-spin analysis automatically added on to my tire rotation. I have been driving cars for almost 30 years, never heard of wheel-spin analysis as an added fee, seems its usually is part of tire rotation - but its not an added fee. Needless to say I went back to my old mechanic, the only reason I had even thought of trying this place was they were close and seem busy. They changed the oil, rotated the tires (with wheel-spin analysis) for $50, and let me know that a number of my issues were related to the motor mounts needing to be replaced. So, I brought the car back two days later to get that done, $1000 - but they didn't try to get me to pay to find out I needed work done, or make up fees for things they should just be doing anyway. Assumedly, the folks at Virginia will just slap the tires in the new spots and not spin them for you unless you pay them to spin them, these guys need suckers to stay in business, fortunate for them PT Barnum's adage is truer than ever. read more

The team here at Virginia Auto Service is the best. We bought a used car from another local service center and boy were we sold a lemon! We even own a business next door to the place that we have trusted to work on our vehicles. When the other shop refused to stand behind their work, and the car they sold us, we sought out the crew at Virginia Auto on the advice of a friend. Robert took us through the engine of our vehicle and showed us all of the poorly done work by the other mechanic we trusted and then, he advised us on what we should do to keep our car running smoothly. The price was fair and the service was done quickly. We will be trusting only Virginia Auto Service from now on. We will be referring all our friends and customers here in the future. These guys are dependably polite and make you feel at ease. I have been fairly paranoid about being taken advantage of by auto mechanics, but you could sense something different at this shop. The owner himself has come out to talk through things with me and all my questions and need for clarification. Through all of it, the staff has always been patient, pleasant and trustworthy. As my boyfriend says about them, "I don't mind paying a little more than the cheap-o shops to know that things will be done properly the first time." Also, something significant for me is their ability to provide a prioritized list of suggestions regarding what needs to be fixed on your car, what can wait and how "dire" they each are. After just 2 weeks of being in Arizona, I had another incident added to my string of bad luck. I was trying to register my car after having been pulled over and, luckily, let of with a warning, when my transmission lines blew all the way across town. I called my insurance for a tow and then a brand new Amazonian friend recommended Virginia Auto to bring my car to. I could kiss this new friend. Pascal answered when I called to let him know I was coming on a tow and he couldn't have been nicer. When I arrived, he got me checked in and offered me options to get home, since they couldn't look at my car until the next day. Luckily, though, I had a ride on the way. Via text the morning, he let me know what the problem was and the cost. Once I ok'd , he was on it and I had my car back at 5 pm. Not once did these guys try to upsell me on anything I didn't need or ask for. In fact, they washed my car before giving it back to me!! Who does that? These guys, apparently. I've never had such a good experience with a shop in the years I've owned cars. I will definitely go back to Virginia Auto if I have further issues with this or any future vehicle. read more

I always passed by this place on my way to work. I was due for an oil change and decided to stop to have my car serviced. My concern with going to a new mechanic is to 'not get taken for' doing work that does not need to be done, etc.. but with this place, I felt at ease, seemed honest and only advised on what your car should need and not need. Friendly, professional, clean, and what was very convenient was that a very friendly guy named 'Bergie' took you to your work and back. Recommended. read more

Well, I have a little 2001 Ford Taurus. My lovely silver grandma car is fantastic for the 100-200 miles I drive per month. And now, my little car has a great shop looking after her. I took my car in as it was time for an oil change and I was convinced my serpentine belt was about to go. It had that tell-tale burning smell which was making me nervous. Turns out I had a loose oil-filter from my last oil change and dripping oil + catalytic converter = my car is about to die smell. Virginia Auto Service changed my oil and cleaned up my engine. It was so nice to receive a call from them saying my belt was fine and an oil change was all I needed. It was refreshing to be given an honest assessment vs being told some great story about some random repair that was needed...I am a female after all and have received some rather odd diagnoses in the past (your rotors fell off, so you'll need to have them replaced for example). It is very reassuring to know I now have an honest, kind and reliable repair shop for my car. Did my oil change run a bit more than some $19.99 special? Yes, but it was so worth it! Now my little one won't be getting an oil change for another year most likely, but my service advisor, Robert, asked me to please stop by every three months so they could check out my belts, tire pressure, etc just to be safe. I recently had an issue with my Ford Edge.. i knew something wasn't quite right (but no one believed me) accept the guys at Virginia Auto. I called and explained the "noises" and "issues" and they had me bring it in right away. They did find a huge transmission leak (that was apparently very obvious; (yet just 2 weeks earlier when i had the oil chained at the dealership, they said they couldn't find anything wrong ... ) Virginia Auto handled the repairs quickly & called me every day with any updates. They also saved me a HUGE amount by contacting my Extended Warranty and getting about 75% of the cost covered!! They are great neighborhood mechanics! read more

I took my car in for an oil change they apparently could not get the plug out from my oil pan so they called me and said the plug costs $400 I told them I didn't want to pay for it since I didn't damage it. I believe the managers name was Tim I told them I didnt mess it up why do I have to pay for it. The manager said if someone turns a light on in your house and the light bulb goes out who replaced it and pays for it. Their remember was to put a temporary plug in and change my oil and they charged me for the temporary plug when I payed for my oil change. I know the owner is on a radio show and everyone raves about this place I will never do business with them again. read more

Took my car into their shop without an appointment and got it back before my shift was over. They really took the time to explain what was wrong with my vehicle. They only do what is necessary and never push you to repair other things on your vehicle, they just like to let you know what's gonna need to be done in the future. Really great customer service, they emailed me all the information about my vehicle and gave me a paper copy as well. Bergy gave me a ride to work and back to the shop, such a nice guy! These guys charge outrageous prices and don't stand behind their work... Whatever you do do not take your car here... I took my car here for an oil change....they stripped the bolt on the oil pan and then had the nerve to tell me it is my fault because of the miles on the car...they told me for a new oil pan and bolt would be 400 dollars because the car has too many miles on it! Listen people they told me that the oil bolt stripped and its my fault! And for them to replace an oil pan is going to be 400 dollars!..learn from my mistake of taking my car to virginia auto service...i talked to the owner and he to talked to me like i was stupid...he had the nerve to tell me if someone changes a lightbulb in my house and it dosent work...than its my fault...they talk about honesty but they do not care. WOMEN BEWARE: They will treat you like you're an idiot. Do women need to send a male representative as their liaison when working with Virginia Auto? I took my car there for a complementary safety inspection (cool, right?!). The Pros: They have a lot of great specials and I totally believe they do excellent work. They also have a drop off and pick up service. They called when the inspection was complete to tell me what issues they found. I would love to have them work on my car. The Cons: Or, why I will never have my work done there. 1. They told me I'm overdue for an oil change when I still have 600 miles to go. I get that it's close. I even understand that my oil is getting dirty. Because I'm almost due for an oil change. Not overdue. Let's not cause a panic here, people. That's not what completely turned me off. 2. I had to ask 3 times for an itemized estimate breaking down parts and labor. This has been a courtesy at every other repair shop I've done business with, and I've owned a lot of clunkers. I asked for it over the phone when they called to tell me what they found during the inspection. I arrive to pick up my car. No print out. I ask again for an itemized estimate. He writes down numbers on the receipt and hands it back to me. Not what I asked for. I ask again and he finally, reluctantly gets me what I asked for. Three times. I found it so unprofessional and rude to have him write down a few numbers and toss the sheet back my way, as if that even came close to what I wanted. He knew exactly what I asked for. It took him all of 10 seconds to print out the sub-estimate. Why not just perform normal, expected customer service without making the customer badger you for it? It's a shame, because Virginia Auto has high reviews for their work and apparently I need a lot done. I know there are lots of clueless people in the world, but my boobs don't automatically make me one of them. And my request should have been a courtesy. I'm going to stick with having my work done at 180 Automotive on 7th Ave, because apparently women have to do it for themselves. read more

Just thought I should update and mention that well over a year later, the $90 brake job held up just fine. I eventually sold the car, which had 300,000 miles on it, but the brakes never did become a problem again. I took my car to 2 other mechanics and neither of them quoted me over $1,000. I do not think they are honest and I definitely do not recommend them! Good service, reasonable prices. I took my truck in for a basic oil change. I received a call from the owner letting me know about a brake light that was out & asked if I wanted them to replace it. *Updated* In the interest of transparency, I'm including my original review and a follow-up. But here's the summary: they're a good, dependable local business that has earned their strong reviews. Original review: "My car died on a Sunday. I had AAA come out and do a diagnostic. I was hoping it was just a battery problem, and they could fix it and be done with it. The AAA guy worked with my car for almost an hour, but the starter was shot, so I had to have it towed. I decided to have it towed to this shop because it's around the corner from my house, I like to support local businesses, and all the reviews were so positive. Robert called me early in the morning and he was initially very friendly. He told me they would do a diagnostic test for $64.99 and call me back. I declined the test (because two different AAA guys already told me the problem), and his response was deeply patronizing: "Wow, well, if you feel confident that *you* know the problem, sure I can give you a quote for the starter." His quote was $500. I called a couple other shops, including my trusted mechanic in Tempe, who all quoted me around $300. I called back and asked if $500 was the best they could do. Robert offered me a different starter ("it's decent, and it just has a 1 year warranty") for $414. I understand that all shops have different prices, but I am disappointed. I won't be giving them my business." Update: Shortly after I posted the review, the owner of the shop (Matt) called to discuss the situation. We chatted, he took down some information, and called me back later in the day. We talked for a long time about labor costs, parts and vendors, how shops arrive at estimates, etc. He was professional and courteous. I haven't yet decided whether I will ask them to fix my car; I'm updating the review mostly because I agree with Matt's replies to other comments below -- that price quotes alone aren't worthy of bad reviews and that if we have a mechanic we like, we should stick with them. I left a bad review because I didn't like the way Robert spoke to me *and* because the price quote was dramatically different than other places. I felt exploited because I was vulnerable -- my car was towed there and I was stuck. (I couldn't go to my mechanic because he was too far away and I was running between my two jobs.) Today I took my car in for an Oil Change (PERIOD). The mechanic decided to play with my coolant overflow and when he pulled the clamp off the line the plastic broke inside the hose and they wanted me to pay for it. THAT IS CRAZY!! This past Friday I was ready to head to Texas with my boyfriend for a family gathering. For once, I was ready to go bright and early so that we could make the six-hour drive before the holiday weekend traffic got to be too terrible. My car, unfortunately, had other plans. The battery, which I had purchased less than a month prior, decided it didn't want to work. We suspected it was a bad connection to the terminal but couldn't be sure. Instead of driving to Checker Auto, I decided to take the car a couple blocks away to Virginia Auto. I have a few friends who regularly take their vehicles here for service, so even though I had never utilized their serviced, I felt confident about taking my car in. At 8am, their small lot was already packed, and I snagged the only available spot. We walked in and were helped right away. The very nice lady at the desk asked if I'd made an appointment ahead of time and I explained our situation. She said they had quite a few other cars in with appointments but she would see what she could do. We sat inside the small lobby and chatted for a while before she came back in. My brand new battery was dead. It had been completely drained! She said they could put the battery back in and we could go back to Checker to have it replaced or they could install a new battery for me. Not wanting to take a chance on another bad battery, I decided to have them take care of it for me. Not more than 20 minutes later, they had finished! I wasn't thrilled about having to pay more than I wanted to, but it was worth every penny. After we got to Texas that afternoon, my very car-savvy Dad looked at the car and said the battery had been installed very well - it was in securely and everything had been cleaned up really well. I need some serious maintenance done on the car, and I will absolutely be taking it in to Virginia Auto. As soon as I do, I have no doubt I'll be coming back to this review to change it from a 4-star to a 5-star review. I've been taking my car here since moving to Phoenix a year ago. Three things really stand out about this shop: 1. Everyone is professional and very nice. That's not a given at every auto shop. 2. Honest service - Several times, I've asked them to look at something and to do the service only if it needs it (for example, if my car's manual suggests something at a certain mileage). Many shops would just take the opportunity to do the service and charge you. However, Virginia Auto has come back to me several times and said that things look fine now and that they'll check it again at my next oil change. 3. I went there for an ac diagnostic, seeing all these good reviews. Here is what happened. 1. They will charge you 150 upfront without even opening the hood. 2. They will not ask you about what went wrong and they will blame you for it. My ac suddenly stopped working and the clutch overheats, and causes the temperature meter to go awry. I told them over the phone but they blamed me later for not telling them. 3. They charge 50 for a general checkup. I told them diagnosis is usually free or no more than 20$. They become really impolite, after I said it. 3. The manager is very rude. I asked him for two separate receipts and he told me he can't and shouted at me asking why I have to argue with him. Because it costs you nothing and I paid for the service!!! Haha, I stand by everything I said even he admitted an AC examination was 150 which is usually free as a courtesy check by many other car repairs .It's true there maybe a communication problem. The person who answered the phone was not the owner or the manager but an older guy. You can't blame me for that right? I will also need to add the AC stopped working after a week, so not only I question their service ethnics but also their service quality and ability to provide accurate diagnosis. read more

I agree with what others have said: these guys are honest, reliable, and competent. But they are incredibly expensive! As an example, they recently changed over my 1990 Ford Taurus' air conditioning from R12 to R134a. After they did that, they were able to run a vacuum through the A/C system to check it for leaks. They discovered that the discharge hose had a leak in it. They quoted me $800 to replace it and then to recharge my A/C with R134a. Not wanting to spend $800 to replace an A/C hose on a 24-year old car, I looked for a less-expensive option. I searched online and found two different websites selling the hose new for $50. I bought the hose and then had a retired ASE-certified auto mechanic install it and then recharge the A/C. He did the job in two hours and charged me $160. I purchased the A/C oil and the R134a he used to recharge the A/C system for about $65 from Auto Zone. (I subsequently saw that Big Lots sells R134a for $6.50 per 12 oz can - about half of what Auto Zone does.) In sum, parts and labor totaled $275, almost one-third of what Virginia Auto Service quoted me. read more
