I agree with what others have said: these guys are honest, reliable, and competent. But they are incredibly expensive! As an example, they recently changed over my 1990 Ford Taurus' air conditioning from R12 to R134a. After they did that, they were able to run a vacuum through the A/C system to check it for leaks. They discovered that the discharge hose had a leak in it. They quoted me $800 to replace it and then to recharge my A/C with R134a. Not wanting to spend $800 to replace an A/C hose on a 24-year old car, I looked for a less-expensive option. I searched online and found two different websites selling the hose new for $50. I bought the hose and then had a retired ASE-certified auto mechanic install it and then recharge the A/C. He did the job in two hours and charged me $160. I purchased the A/C oil and the R134a he used to recharge the A/C system for about $65 from Auto Zone. (I subsequently saw that Big Lots sells R134a for $6.50 per 12 oz can - about half of what Auto Zone does.) In sum, parts and labor totaled $275, almost one-third of what Virginia Auto Service quoted me. read more

It's been years since I had the car that Virginia Auto Service worked on before. I'm wondering what took me so long long to return since they are in my neighborhood and have been a long-established business. Yesterday, I knew there was something wrong with my car, but it took much of the day to figure out what the mystery noise was: It was a large plastic piece under my engine that was no longer secured. As a result, I felt less secure, too. We have regular doctors for when we are sick at the last minute, but so rarely to people have regular mechanics for the same reason. It's a crazy week with work, and I called in the afternoon to see if there was a chance to take a look at the car. The best I could do was get there later, but the nice person on the phone encouraged me to come by so they could take a look. When I arrived, it would have been easy to reassure me and put me on the road, but I was glad for the genuine interest for someone to take a look. While I was prepared to set an appointment later as long as nothing completely fell off, instead, the whole thing was fixed in 10 minutes. It's this kind of friendly, reassuring service that the reviews mention, and I'm happy to add my review to the mix. In the time I was waiting in the clean, front-desk area, I talked with 2 long-time customers who described how they've come here for as many as 7 years because it's a place they can trust. Got my truck in by 5 on Thursday, got a ride home and it was ready by Friday. I had an oil change done a month ago and notice this past weekend of a clacking noise coming from the top of the engine. After doing a check under the hook I noticed that the oil reading was low; strange since it had been done recently. So I look at my service receipt and to my surprise in the fine print it states: oil was changed using 0w20 which is the WRONG oil for my truck that take 5w30. When I made the appointment with Robert he specifically stated that because I'm requesting a high mileage oil to be used, it had to ordered in due to the shop not keeping it in stock. So I paid extra for something that in the description of the report shows was not used. I've contacted the shop to rectify the issue I'm having and the gentelman that answered did not provide his name, and claims that the high mileage oil was used and that the 0w20 is a generic message written on all orders! Later to follow up with it's a typo! This is the most concerning reply...so everyone that comes to this shop will have to get their air filter changed or tubes replaced etc. and it will be marked that the wrong oil is used? It does not make sense and has conflicting information listed. read more

I can't sing higher praises of these guys. My 30k mile Versa had developed an idling problem. I took my car in for routine maintenance and asked if they would have a look at the problem. They performed the routine maintenance I requested and although I was a little bit taken aback by the price for the inspection ($100-$200 based on what they had to do) I have trusted them for quality service on other vehicles. They did a diagnostic and the problem was a misfire on cylinder 2. They went out of their way to call my dealership to see if the problem was covered under warranty, which it was. As it turned out Nissan had to replace my engine. This mechanic could have chased the problem from sensor to sensor and fuel filter and ignition etc etc but they didn't, they found the correct path for me to save money and get my car running perfect again. After that Matt who is the friendliest and most helpful person you will EVER meet at a mechanic offered to take my car to the dealership and pick it up for me, free of charge. He even knocked off most of the inspection charge because they quickly realized they wouldn't be doing the work to repair it. There are cheaper mechanics out there but the quality of service here not only made my experience much better but ended up saving me potentially thousands of dollars worth of repairs that were ultimately covered under my warranty. Although there is a small premium to get work done here (there are shady mechanics that will do jobs for less) the customer service by itself, let alone the quality of work, honesty and integrity of the staff are well worth the marginal pricing differences. These guys are AMAZING! I brought my car in and they checked over the WHOLE car! I realize my car needs some TLC. The guys prioritized my list of things I need to get done and made me estimates too. I know I have alot of money I need to save to fix my car but the guys are helping me out and we are doing a little at a time. I LOVE the fact they told me EVERYTHING that was wrong with my car. I went to this establishment because this is where my Uncle brings all of his cars I did not really want to bring it to them because they always overcharge him and endlist to say they did the same thing to me!! I brought my vehicle there to run or supposably they ran a diagnostic they told me that my car was shutting off because my factory alarm !! So I paid them for the diagnostic which I believe was too high and prices well I soon as I got home which was 45 minutes from their establishment my car was still doing the same thing I called them to let them know that they had not solved the issue and that I would be bringing it back to them and about an hour because as how long it took my car to cool off and then restart I then brought it back to them and when a meeting the mechanic I let them know that I believed it was the neutral control safety switch which I had told them before A-day had passed and they called me to let me know that indeed it was the neutral control safety switch that have been melted and they needed to replace that along with the pig Tales. When they had called my Uncle and gave him the price he said go ahead and do it upon picking up my vehicle I paid almost $1200 for them to only price gouge me on the Parts Plus their labor is higher than any other mechanics around I would not recommend this place because I basically diagnosed my own car for them they never did it A diagnostic on it and they never applied the diagnostic to the cost of the 1200 because I left their establishment and then had to come back and still after I came back they still never ran a diagnostic I know that 100% because I have a sync in my car and it lets me know when it's been unplugged which they never did I'm plug it in order to put the diagnostic machine fed up with them would never go back there again I am a single mom of 6 and I guess they believe because my Uncle was Paying for the repairs They Could charge whatever the hell they wanted!!!! I found out they had a Groupon offer coming up. I bought the Groupon, took my car in and was very pleased with the technical work and customer service. This is the first review I am writing for Yelp and I am inspired to do so because of my great experience at Virginia Auto Service. (Although I didn't know it) My engine belt broke on my way to work while driving on the highway. I managed to get safely to work and I ended up calling Virginia Auto Service upon the recommendation of a friend. Within minutes of talking to Matt he had provided an initial assessment (which turned out to be correct) and advised me how to proceed. He encouraged me to get the car towed and was VERY clear that he would rather I bring my car to another shop if it was less expensive for me and/or safer. How refreshing! He also took the time to look at a similar car in his lot so as to better inform me of possible scenarios.... all before I had committed to utilizing his services. I towed it to Virginia Auto Service (thanks for instructing me to contact my insurance company- towing was free) where it was assessed, fixed, cleaned and ready in hours. I have been taking my vehicle's to this shop for the past 5 years. Before then I would float from shop to shop ......never satisfied with work or price, if work is quality I can justify it with price, but if workmanship and price don't match up its frustrating. Too Expensive ! $$$ Work does NOT match the price charged I used to go to Virginia Auto until they began charging $100 - $200 for ALL diagnostics. (AKA last visit they wanted $200 just to look at my car) I confronted them on the $200 charge JUST to look at my car, and they claimed that they would deduct money if the repairs made matched their diagnostic. So HOPEFULLY it will match, or you'll be popped with a $100 - $200 charge. If you don't believe me, give them a call. They will briefly mention this ridiculous diagnostic charge when you call to make an appointment or drop off your car. Listen carefully, because they will say it faster than a commercial stating the side effects of a drug. I will admit, they do a pretty good job ... but the price does not match the work they do. They called me with a totally different problem the cost to fix was outrageous. I repeated what i needed and they told me no, no, no. They really thought i would be bullied into getting a service done that I don't need and that would not fix what was wrong to begin with. Yelps review process is totally rigged...what a joke! They only claim to be impartial. I took my 2000 Ford E-250 van in last week after I rebuilt the engine and transmission. This isn't the first rebuild that I have done and it won't be the last, but it will be the last time I give Virginia Auto another dime! I replaced just about every sensor and I used brand new parts while performing a complete rebuild. Chuck's Speed Shop did my block work @ $680.00. Between the engine and transmission, I have over $4,500.00 just in new parts, the labor was from myself...and the van does run. I'm just not happy with the idle once the engine is at temp. History: My van fired right up after the rebuild, but it began to run rough after warming up with 50 miles on the new rebuild. The dash cluster temp gauge wasn't reading the temp, or it was inop., so I figured that the computer was unable to read the temp and make fuel mixture corrections . It turns out that the temp sensor on the cylinder head does this job, but Virginia Auto never mentioned this fact to me. In a weak effort to find what was wrong with my van, they checked the fuel pressure, which they said dropped off shortly after turning the ignition on. They recommended changing out the fuel pump, fuel filter and swapping out the temp gauge with Ford Motor Craft parts. I had already changed the fuel filter. I asked how much they would charge to install a new Motorcraft fuel pump and they told me $900.00 - $1,000.00!!! I asked how much the fuel pump would cost and I was told $600.00!!! You can purchase the Ford fuel pump for $297.00 from rockauto.com! I chose the Carter for $135.00 and they looked identical during the swap. I used a new Motorcraft temp gauge too. Virginia told me that they have never heard of "Carter". I'm not sure how much these guys know about anything. My major complaint comes from having to argue over how much the diagnostics fee and time should run. They gave me an attitude when I told them $300 - $500 was too expensive and I'd give them 2 hours, then I wanted a call because I wasn't giving them an open checkbook of mine. Their shop rate is $127.00. The second service writer chimed in and informed me that they would need to retrace my steps on my rebuild because I might have stuff crossed, missing, or incorrectly routed, which pissed me the off! I kept my cool and I told him that I took pictures, made diagrams, and I purchased the Ford repair manuals, which are three thick books! After just over an hour, I walked over and asked about the progress where I was informed about the fuel pump pressure, which they said they found within the first 20 minutes. The rest of the time was spent doing god only knows what, but they didn't even come close to helping me fix the poor idle at temp or the rough start and they charged me $289.00 without finding a single issue. NOTE: They had the van for an entire day, but only worked on it between other jobs - this info came from the manager. I told them what I didn't change out during the rebuild because there was only a couple parts. I also wanted the timing checked, but they never wrote that down because they were way too busy pressuring me into giving them an open checkbook! Seriously, does anyone do honest work anymore?! I've gone to Virginia a few times. I have often felt upcharged on services but a recent visit confirmed my feelings and I will not return. My car was running hot and my "check air bag" light was on. They wanted $145 to diagnose each issue. That is nearly $300 just to tell me what was wrong - not even fix it! Unbelievable. I checked out this business in connection with a Groupon, and after becoming very disenchanted with the dealership. After my regular service adviser was "transferred" after returning from maternity leave, I was regularly facing pricey service visits even for regular maintenance. The increase in cost was pretty odd since it corresponded with the change in my service contact (they are paid on commission at the Acura dealer). I was also pretty annoyed by the "transfer" of my trusted contact. So, I started my search for a better option. I went ahead and purchased the Groupon after checking out the business on garagefly.com. I was very impressed with the service here -- they did a comprehensive inspection and everything checked out fine. They made no attempt to up-sell me on anything, including brakes, which the dealership had coincidentally told me would "definitely be due" on the next service visit (my brake pads were on the good side of fine when VAS checked them). Everyone seems very honest, and friendly, and while I don't know about the prices for major repairs, it's good to know that they'll only be charging you when you really need work done (unlike the dealer). They also have a driver to take you where you need to go while they work on your car. read more

The first time I took a vehicle to VAS, I gave them 5 stars. The second time, was just the opposite - thus the low rating. The diagnostic inspection of the collectible car was good, but after that the vehicle sat in their lot while more "bread and butter" jobs were performed. I was initially told they would overhaul the carb, but it was sent out. Why additional work on the vehicle couldn't be done while waiting for the carb (shocks, springs, etc) remains a mystery. After close to two months, I had the vehicle towed elsewhere. The owner's attitude toward this project was negative and he would not agree to any kind of timeline. So I guess if I hadn't pulled the car, it might have sat in his lot for over six months...or more! Sorry, but I won't be back based upon this experience. read more

These are the most honest and upfront auto mechanics I've ever met. I was driving my son's KIA from Tulane University in New Orleans to Sacramento California. He had taken his car to a local mechanic in New Orleans, to get the car in good working condition before I was to make this cross country trip. The only problem was that the mechanic in New Orleans who installed a major component of the engine (timing belt), put it n backwards. By the time I got to Arizona, I knew I had to stop at a auto shop or the car wouldn't make it to California, where I had intended for my mechanic to look at it. I was lucky enough to find Virginia Auto Service. They documented and took pictures, of the problem. I paid for the repair (reasonable, considering what they had to do) and safely drove the rest of the way home. Because of their precision and documentation as well as pictures of what the previous mechanic had done, my son was able to get all of his money back. I can't thank these guys enough. I only wish they worked in California. Before them I was driving on hope and a prayer. They literally saved my life. I am truly eternally grateful for their service and honesty. Have you ever gone somewhere and just felt things were off? Over the years we have patronized VAS for services ranging from a full cooling rebuild to a sticky seat lever. progressively things got pricier and the tone of voice when asked about the price and suggested service more and more condescending. My wife recently purchased a value card with various services included. What she did not do was read the fine print about what a free oil change would cost beyond the purchase price of the card. Really? $11 for a free oil change? Really? your conversation about dinner last night is more important than the customer standing in front of you? Really? the ringing phone takes president to the conversation being held with a customer when three other employees are in the office? When the car was picked up and was not washed, for the third time, I was told that she made the appointment wrong and that they don't wash the autos of those who arrange for a waiting appointment even when they know that the client will not be back for hours. That might be OK, however the talking down and rude demeanor tinged with 'we don't need your stinking oil change why don't you do all the work we tell you needs to be done?' is not not at all OK. We have found a new garage a few miles east where they seem to care and give good service and at a much more competitive price. Goodbye VAS Happy to be Gone! read more

I've never felt it necessary to post a review of any company before, but my experience with Virginia Auto Service was so terrible that it needs to be written about. I just moved to Arizona two months ago and my check engine light went on. Panicking, I decided to take it to the nearest shop, which was Virginia Auto Service. Well, they charged me an upwards of $130 just to see WHY my check engine light was on. They told me I would need a new throttle body, which was going to cost $700, and then they listed another $700 of repairs that my car supposedly needed. Appalled at how much it had already costed and how much it was GOING to cost, I took my car to a mechanic that a friend recommended. He took one look under the hood of my car and told me that my throttle body did not need to be replaced, using some choice words to describe the mechanic who did the test at Virginia Auto Service, saying that the mechanic there is an idiot for thinking I needed to replace a throttle body. He said that my car probably just needed to be reset (which was done when they ran the diagnostics for my check engine light) and that it would run fine. Lo and behold, I've been driving my car around now for two months without replacing the throttle body and my car has been running smoothly with no issues. Thank goodness I trusted my instinct and picked up my car before I let them take care of a problem they created just to make money off of a young, inexperienced female who doesn't know anything about cars. And thank goodness for the mechanic that I found who actually told me the truth and saved me $1400. read more

My car broke down due to a battery alternator issue. When I called and spoke with the Manager/ Owner and asked him for an estimate, he told me for alternator/ battery problems it could range from $150 to $500. I had the car towed to their garage and he calls me and tells me it would cost about 700 dollars. When I ask him to explain the difference between his earlier estimate and now, he says I can take it elsewhere if I am not happy with their price knowing fully well that it would cost me another 100 dollars to get it towed to another garage. I went online and found that the remanufactured alternator for my car (a landrover discover 1997) which is what Virginia Auto put in is available for less than 250 dollars and it takes about 30 minutes or so to replace. So I was overcharged here by double (almost 350 dollars) in what I can only think of as a "bait and switch operation". Looking at some of the other similar negative experiences/ reviews of them on Yelp, I am convinced that I was knowingly "taken for a ride here" and boy I don't appreciate it. Hopefully others will be smarter than me and read these reviews on Yelp before using Virginia Auto. read more

Summary: The shuttle is great I felt they were trying to sell me services I didn't need They charged me for a service I specifically declined and I had to argue to get it removed from the invoice The sales person was incredibly rude While I don't feel they were "out to get me," I have an overall feeling of dissatisfaction and distrust for the woman I dealt with. I would not go back or recommend this business. I purchased a groupon for a year membership to the auto club. I took my car in for an oil change and asked that they also check the bulbs and and anything else that seemed out of the ordinary. I was initially very impressed with the courtesy shown at the front desk and by the driver of the shuttle. I received a call later in the day from a woman and again, she was initially very helpful as she gave me their recommendations. She recommended several things (prices were approximate so they may be off by a few dollars) new shocks (she said my tires were damaged heavily from having bad shocks) for $640-700, an 80K mile service for $569, windshield wiper replacement for $70, battery cable cleaning for $30, taking my car to the dealership to get recall work done, and bulb replacement and cabin air filter replacement (I don't remember the prices - they were reasonable). She even gave me a recommendation for which dealership and service person to take my car to for the recall work. After discussing the recommendations I told her to go ahead and change the bulbs and air filter, I would consider the 80K inspection for another visit (I only have 76k on my car) leave the wipers and battery cables alone because I could do that work again and hesitantly told her to go ahead with the shocks. However, a few minutes after hanging up the phone, I decided to get a second opinion at the dealership for the shocks as $700 was more than I wanted to spend. When I called her back about 5-10 minutes later to tell her I wanted to hold off on the shocks, her whole attitude changed. She went from being helpful and almost maternal to downright rude, telling me what a big mistake I was making before hanging up. When I went to go get my car (the driver was still incredibly nice and helpful), her rude attitude continued. I don't know if she was offended that I didn't take her advice or what, but she was VERY UPSET it seemed. When she gave me my total it seemed a bit high and I asked to see the bill and she handed me an invoice with no descriptions. I asked again for an itemized receipt so I would know what I was paying for and the attitude and huffing came out again as she gave me the list. Included on the list was a charge for battery cable cleaning. Now, $30 isn't going to break me, but I am not going to pay for something I specifically said not to do. I politely told her I didn't authorize that service so I wasn't going to pay for it and asked for my new total. She argued a bit but eventually took it off the bill once she realized I wasn't arguing back but just staring at her waiting for my new total. I realize the work was done, but if I didn't order it I am not paying for it. She then asked who I was taking my car to for the recall work and when I told her a dealership that wasn't the one she recommended (BTW the one she recommended is 30 miles from my house on the other side of Phoenix and the one I went to is ten miles away from my house) she again got offended and told me I was making a HUGE MISTAKE. When I replied that I appreciated the recommendation but it didn't make sense for me to add on an hour to my commute each way when there is a dealership on my way to work she was again rude, telling me what a big mistake I was making. The entire experience after I told her no thank you to the shocks was very unnerving. I don't think that I was scammed, but I do not feel comfortable with my transaction either. Although I have two more "free" oil changes there, I will not be going back. Update: I had my car thoroughly inspected at the dealership and they said that not only were my shocks fine, my tires were too. Additionally, they said the wrong type of coolant was in my vehicle and I needed to get the system flushed and cleaned because of it. I am not saying Virgina Auto put that type of coolant in my car because they didn't mention adding any, but I would imagine that checking the coolant would be something they would have checked on during the inspection they claimed they performed. Again, I will NOT go back to this shop and will not recommend it. I give the shop 2 stars instead of one star is because I think if you go in there and say you want one thing and one thing only, they will probably do a good job, the driver and the shuttle service was great, and the woman did take off the charge for the battery, although I did have to fight for it. read more

The customer service was above and beyond my expectations. The service advisor, Pascal was very understanding of my needs and my budget and seemed extremely knowledgable. I went in for engine noise and my engine light was on, also when I hit the break the rear end of the SUV kinda felt weird (I didn't mention that). I have a 2010 Chevy Tahoe. I dropped my SUV off and was given a loaner car. That was very convenient, considering I had to get the kids to school and myself to work. I have never been offered that, unless I was at the dealership. Within a couple of hours Pascal contacted me regarding the engine noise and low and behold (without me mentioning it...he told me what was wrong with the rear end of the Tahoe and what needed to be done to repair that as well). I appreciate how they didn't only pay attention to what I brought it in for, but any other issues as well. The estimate was very fair and comparable to the dealership, however I was getting first class service and felt like my thoughts and opinion actually mattered. The work was done in a timely manner and I am back on the road once again. As far as I am concerned, this shop should be rated "best in the valley". We recently took our Mercedes to Virginia Auto Service for a new set of tires. Since we purchased the vehicle there has been a vibration in the rear of the vehicle. We have taken it to several places, including the dealer, to have it repaired, to no avail. When Matt balanced the tires on his new machine, that simulated road force, the problem totally dissapeared. I thought I had a problem with my car's heater. I took it into Virginia Auto and they discovered that was only a symptom of a major engine problem. So they did some research on it and found out it was a manufacturer's defect. They arranged for the dealership to get me a whole new engine, for free! There was nothing in it for them, but they took care of all the details to get this done. Tim got it all arranged for me and explained everything as he always does. I love these guys, they are smart, friendly and fair! read more

I took my truck to get an oil change and inspection. Robert was super friendly and knowledgeable. They did a great job and even picked me up from work. The only thing I didn't receive was the truck wash I was told I'd get (not the important part). Overall, great mechanic! read more

I was tired of going to the dealer for my truck, which is out of warranty coverage and tried Virginia Auto on the recommendation of one of my business partners. My truck had been shuddering and shaking badly at certain RPMs & speeds. The dealer diagnosed the problem as my catalytic convertor and replaced it. After driving my truck for a day, I could tell the problem was not fixed and even felt worse. Rather than go back to the dealer, I thought it was a good time to sever ties and try some place new. They had to keep my truck a few days to fully diagnose and repair the issue and actually took the time to drive the truck, first to recreate the problem, then to be sure it was fixed. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but the dealer clearly did not do this. They kept me updated throughout the process (what tests they were running, possible causes and next steps), offered me rides to and from the shop and a loaner car when they had to keep my truck a few days. Turned out to be a spark plug issue, adding to my frustration with the dealer, as the technician there had even written, "probable spark plug issue" on my receipt/work order, yet failed to fix it. However, their lack of follow through and poor customer service forced me to find these guys, who I feel like I can trust, so all is good in the end. I went into the situation a little standoffish because I knew my fix would be expensive, but I left feeling good about the service I received. They also warranty their work, I believe it's 2 years/24,000 miles? I've been to other shops that will fix your car for cheap and do a quick-fix repair that will mask or even fix issues for a time. If that's what you're looking for, don't bring your car here. These guys work hard to find and fix the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. read more
