Thought this was a bbq shack but the smoker out front was a gas fired unit and small .. get inside and bbq option is brisket or pulled port sandwich no other bbq options and no plates combos etc. Go for brisket sandwich which was sliced and reheated on the flattop .. topped with sauce and onion rings .. was actually a good sandwich but not exciting if you were expecting a sliced brisket dinner. Was a non and pop type place and appears it was a burger bar and bbq sandwich's were and after thought. Price was fair, service was decent, but menus and salt/ pepper shakers need to be wiped down as when you pick them up they feel greasy. Favorite place for burgers whenever I'm at Charlottesville. It's an uber casual place but it's so fun coming here with a group of friends. The sides are AMAZING. I tend to order tons of sides whenever I'm here. I love the fried pickles and onion rings. The burgers here are fantastic too. Service is very quick as well. Martin's grill is just a great place to go if you want burgers without spending a lot of money or simply settling for a fast food joint. So I wanted to love this place, but they didn't have any PORK! The whole reason I came to this place was to try their homemade pork, and they were completely out. I understand that this can happen, but seriously they didn't let us know until AFTER we ordered. So after this bitter news I opted for a chicken gyro. Yes, they worked with me and let me make it chicken instead of lamb, so I appreciate that. I also ordered a side salad, and it was very fresh so bonus points. Why the 4 stars? However, I ordered a salad and I didn't like how the onions and cucumbers (way too many) were chopped super big with a small amount of chicken given..plus there's no cheese or croutons or an option for them? They were attentive as far as service w but running out of food is unacceptable when your restaurant is right beside of a Food Lion. We chose to go to Martin's last night for dinner since we hadn't been there in a while. Food was good as usual but service was not up to par. Our server rushed to our table as soon as we sat down and took our drink orders. When he returned he said "Just to let you know, we close at 8 on Sundays." With the time change this weekend we were running a little later than usual and weren't really paying attention to what time it was. OK maybe it was 7:45 but if you are open until 8, you are open until 8, meaning we were there before you closed. Another party of four showed up and I heard the server say the exact same thing to them. Next thing I know they were walking out the door. Sorry but we felt unwelcome and rushed and apparently weren't the only ones that felt this way. read more

I entered Martins grill jolly as can be on Monday afternoon. The service was subpar, but the big problem I had with was the extra $2.75 for a dern egg. The average single egg costs about 67¢. Now I understand that with the terrible circumstances we are in today's world business can be struggling, but that is no reason whatsoever to charge a loyal customer $2.75. I have decided that next time I will make my own burger with an egg on it at my house, and not return to this eatery. read more

This is my favorite burger in Charlottesville. Easy choice. It's simple and classic. The food options are your regular grill. I'm a cheeseburger and fries fan. We end up getting a half fries, half rings basket. So much fries goodness. The service is quick and super friendly. The establishment is well run and the people care about what they are doing. Nothing on the menu could not have been made at home in less than 20 minutes. Footlong All The Way was uninteresting - spicy yet bland Burger was very tasty. Not sure if this is considered a new review or an updated review but it's meant as an update. Martin's is on it's third owner who like the most recent father and son owner team is trying to do new things, new food items, etc. A prime example is the Lonestar sandwich. It started as a one or two night a week special now it's a menu item all the time. This owner tried Sunday brunch about two or three years ago so kudos for him trying that. The food I think is still good but the service has gone down hill. I don't come here as often as I used to but when I do it seems like a new server from the last time when there were great ones in the past that stayed. Even some of the cooks from years ago who doubled as servers are gone. In my most recent visits the server is pretty quick to greet you and your orders then the cooks including the owner brings out your food. The problem I've had with the servers is they don't come around often enough to check on you and get you a refill. Half the time you have to ask them. Be careful if you have a large party. One time last year I was here with friends from my church after service and I guess because there was so many of us that the orders were between two or three order pad sheets that some of my friends got food before others (and not just a matter of it was about to come to the table like it might not have been started yet). My friend Logan got a basket of fries he didn't order what he actually wanted never came. It was the worst experience ever here and it had never been a bad experience. I just hope they get better servers who will do a better job of taking care of guests. read more

No frills. No nonsense. Top-notch burgers, fries, and onion rings. I'm partial to the triple cheeseburger and the cheeseburger sub. Very friendly atmosphere. You can have a beer or a Coke in a glass bottle with your food (or choose from a good selection of fountain drinks). There are plenty of tables if you want to bring the kids (as many do), or you can pull up a stool to the counter. One minor complaint: stools have no backs - a pet peeve of mine. Our third time will be our last. We ordered wings with sauce on the side. When we arrived to pick up our food the wings were made with the sauce on them and they said the order did not indicate we had wanted sauce on the side. My wife was with me when I ordered and she confirms that we ordered it properly. The wings were awful. They were soggy and anyone could have done better baking them at home. read more

This place is a classic burger joint with some sandwiches. The burgers were nice, fresh and thick, they were super juicy and the bacon on top was a crispy delicious addition. Service was nice, but a little slow. Someone in our party ordered the chicken Philly cheesesteak and thought it was great too, they similarly thought the meat was really juicy. The tater tots in my opinion needed to be fried a little longer, but they were pretty good regardless.
