Timberwood Grill in Charlottesville is one of my favorite afternoon restaurants. I love the ambiance of this place. There is plenty of room and normally on Monday through Friday there is not a large crowd during the 2-6pm Happy Hour. Table, booth, or bar they normally have room for you. On this visit during their Happy Hour I had a few of their $4 drinks to go with my meal. Their dry cider is worth a try, as is their Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. Their Philly cheesesteak sandwich is loaded with steak and cheese. Be sure to get the skin-on house fries. Their Pastrami Reuben on grilled Rye bread is an excellent choice. The thousands island dressing is homemade. There is a generous portion of Pastrami on their Reuben. Their wait staff is excellent. They are very informed and helpful with all your menu questions and will help you decide on a selection if you are having trouble deciding. Our waiter was most attentive on bring our drink refills. For me, this is easy in and out from the Seminole Highway. read more

This review is for the lunch time orders. Came here in November based purely on reviews and it did not disappoint. It was a Monday late lunch and plenty of patrons inside. Everyone got sandwiches or burgers from the regular menu, and one item from the special menu. I came to this location as I had been craving the chicken wrap and original fries all day. Truly one of the meals that always satisfies my hunger. This trip however was my worst ever to date. I want to give them a better rating as I have been here many times and usually left satisfied. The waitress that served us was one of the worst I have ever had. Made the entire dinner night out awful. She gave us incorrect orders, never came to check on us, and by the time the check rolled out she wouldn't even come to take it after multiple attempts to get her attention. It was almost like she had made a conscious decision that she was done waiting on us. Prioritized other guests the entire night. I really hate giving a place a 1 star solely off the actions of one individual but most of it was egregious that it overshadowed the entire experience. Did a review 9 years ago and we still come to the smokies twice a year. Which means we come here twice a year. The food is always really good. The prices are a little steep but, like I said it's always good. My wife had the cheeseburger yesterday and my step daughter had the fish ( cod) and chips. She said it was the best she ever had. I have been coming here for a couple years now, my order is always a Durango salad with blackened salmon. It is a special treat, as I wouldn't normally pay $25 for a salad, but the blackened salmon makes it. Today we both ordered this and I clearly said BLACKENED SALMON. Our waiter, Drew, indicated that he understood. When we received our salads the salmon was NOT blackened. I asked Drew for blackening seasoning for it because they forgot to put it on. Drew decided to argue with me saying they NEVER blacken the salmon. Unfortunately he had an attitude after that and was a bit patronizing. I appreciate Timberwood's Variety of vegetarian options! We tried a few items when we dined in: -Nachos (minus ground beef): I really loved the homemade queso dip on these nachos. They could've used some quac and salsa, but ultimately pretty solid. -General Tso's Cauliflower: my favorite of the 3 dishes, really great flavor and cooked nicely. -Patty Melt with Garden Patty + Sweet Potato Waffle Fries: in my opinion, this dish just lacked flavor. The waffle fries had a lot of potential as well but just fell short. Service was attentive and we got what we needed. This place was not bad, but was not outstanding - it did the job and was fairly priced as well. The vibes give early 2000s family-style restaurant, which is intriguing for my 90s babies out there. read more

With most of their lunch menu being $15-17, it's not the cheapest place in town to dine. With that said, we did get a wonderful server who made our experience very enjoyable. I had the Al Capone with original fries and it schmacks the taste buds really well! Toppings on the burger are grilled onions, applewood smoked bacon, gouda & truffled horseradish mayo on a brioche bun. Also, service was super quick while it was a busy night. Our server was super nice and came back around when my buddy and I were still talking and forgetting to look at the menu. I'm huge on hot sauce with my fries, and they accommodated with a bottle of Tabasco, so i was a happy camper. Bottom line: highly recommend this grill! The food here is good - family friendly. We have been coming here for two years and had the most disheartening experience on Sunday afternoon. We arrived and there were about five people just hanging out at the host stand. They saw me - didn't care to greet us right away. Continued to chat. I had two young kids with me. One woman dropped a LOUD f-bomb. They did not care whatsoever about my kids. Thanks to them, my kids asked what it means. Bad enough. We were seated. Left there for 25 minutes without anyone coming to our table even once. We simply got up and left. We won't be back which stinks because this is our neighborhood restaurant. We came with friends, who frequent Timberwood Grill and rave about it. On this instance, our food was simply average. My friend recommended the Caribbean Salmon, which we both ordered. We both agreed that it was rather dry and tasteless. This was much different than the last time they ordered the exact same Salmon entree. Perhaps, it was an off night or a new chef. My other friends ordered the Fish Tacos and the Steak Salad, which they both enjoyed. The service was friendly and efficient. It was a rough weekend to visit c'ville- the end of the wahoo welcome, the first home football game, and the last Friday at Five. Needless to say, eating downtown was not an option. Ended up here and had the special of the night - a wonderful (though mild) curry and an amply loaded Perfect Salad. Both were terrific and foot the bill nicely for something that was not fried. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant was busy but we sat at the bar so we got seats right away. We were served drinks and order was taken very quickly for it being busy. There were a a good amount of TV's in the bar area and they had all the good games on. The bartender was very busy but took good care of us. I got the wings with buffalo and general tso's flavors sauces. The buffalo wings were not very warm but the gerneral tso's were which was odd but they were both very good. They have NO concept of staging delivery of food. Once again, on an evening when we want to chill, the appetizers preceded the mains by a scant 5 minutes. Mains will be cold, apps can't be savoured. I ordered the Mushroom Ravioli in Pesto Cream Sauce to go for $17.70. As soon as I picked up the bag, I wondered if they handed me an empty container. Tiny portion size for the price. The taste? Absolutely amazing. SO good! But, after a few bites, the richness gets to you and you need to break it up with another taste, but there's no veg or salad, just the ravioli. Now, to be fair, maybe it said a la cart and I didn't notice, didn't think about it, but for that price, there should be more on the plate. I think a salad or side should have been included for that price. As good as it was, I will not eat here again. A few pieces of good ravioli just doesn't justify the price. read more

Friendly staff and good lunch menu. We had a southwest wrap, Hercules, chicken salad, and a turkey croissant. Overall food was good, nothing spectacular but worth the stop. Prettt solid experience at timberwood yesterday! For starters we tried their general tsos cauliflower wings and they were great! They potentially the best cauli wings I've ever had - the sauce was light and sticky, the breading was crispy but also light and not too bready and the cauliflower was slightly crunchy still and not mushy, which can be the risk with cauli wings. They were absolutely delicious. For my lunch I had the eastern shore sandwich, it's a sourdough crab melt with two types of cheeses and it was great. My friend who's a vegetarian was really impressed with the options on their menu and opted for the artichoke tacos. They were also really good. The food was actually much tastier than I expected and I was really impressed. The only downside of our visit was the service was quite slow. The food totally made up for it though. I live nearby and have dined here many times over the past 9 years. The food is usually very reliable--tasty, served hot, and most of the time reasonably prompt. The waitstaff are usually very courteous. The exterior and dining areas seem to be kept up well. However, a recent visit for lunch for 6 of us was aborted because we received such bad attitude both with staff and the manager, because we asked for outdoor seating. For some reason that weekday was chosen to hose down the covered patio at lunch time and initially we were told we'd have to wait until the cleaning was finished. When we asked how long that would be, we were first told a few minutes, which then escalated to "maybe an hour, maybe more". We had tried to make advance reservations for outside but were told they don't take reservations. When we spoke directly to the manager (owner?), we were treated rudely, including some muttering under his breath. It became clear to us that cleaning the patio at that particular time was far more important to the restaurant than building customer rapport or even selling 6 meals with tips, so we left and took our business elsewhere. One person in our group was on a walker and no seating was even offered to her for our wait. What a lousy reward for years of customer loyalty! We won't be back. read more

Would go back just for that. The steak au poivre had a great sauce and yummy mashed potatoes but the steak was a little tough and more mushrooms would have been great. The crispy chicken finger salad(gotta get the honey mustard dressing!) is a classic choice!! It is perfect on every level! The crab dip appetizer is creamy and delicious! We can't go here and not get it! They also have a full bar and lots of different types of draft beers on tap-something for everyone for sure!! This is a family business-not a chain restaurant! First time here and it was good honestly. Not incredible, but I love that they're adding vegan options to their menu and trying to cater to the vegan community. My server was really nice and willing to talk to the kitchen to verify and confirm the new vegan options that aren't listed on the menu yet. I ended up with an avocado veggie wrap and fries. The veggies could use less oil and more seasoning but overall good! I live on the other side of Charlottesville and it wasn't so amazing that I'd rush back with the 20 minute drive but if I'm in the are, it's a good option. My mom got fish and chips and ordered what the menu called hand cut fries, but they didn't seem fresh at all. The fish, on the other hand was huge, crispy, and looked great. My wife and I just got into town, and we found this place close to our hotel. We called ahead to see if there was a wait, but all was good. When we arrived, the staff seated us promptly. Our server Molly was awesome, took our beverage orders, gave me a Stella alternative that was outstanding. Timberwood is our go to spot. We live close, the food is always good, and they always have a draft beer that we like. Every now and then, they get something special in. Tonight's treat, fitting for Halloween, was KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge. Brewed by Founders, it's KBS plus Mackinac Fudge and maple syrup aged in oak bourbon barrels. My dinner selection was the Perfect Chicken Tender salad with honey mustard. They increased the prices since reopening, about $1.00 per dish. I get it, just hope they can survive the pandemic. I recognize that the pandemic has taken a toll on businesses, so I try and allow some latitude when it comes to ratings. What is really strange for me is that this location is rated so much higher than the Merchant's Walk location in South Charlottesville, near where my kids used to live, and where we always seem to get a great meal. My wife ordered the classic burger and fries, which tasted like a frozen patty. I ordered the pastrami reuben, with onion rings. The fries and onion rings were soggy, like fishing solids out of a pool of grease. Overall we were disappointed, given our past positive experiences with the Merchant's Walk location. It has everything we need in a bar/restaurant. 1) Outdoor area so we can take the dog. 2) Great new happy hour specials **Played beer roulette yet?** 3) Good selection of sandwiches and specials 4) Nice salads when we feel the need to be "healthy" This time we came in for happy hour. $3 Bask DIPA is a great deal. We were meeting friends for dinner elsewhere, but this was a nice place for a drink after work. Thursday is my favorite HH day because of the nachos. If you haven't had the Timberwood Nachos, you are missing out. That is typically our #1 recommendation for first time visitors. It is a large portion of everything that makes nachos great. Beef, lettuce, black beans, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, etc. You name it, it's on these nachos. Typically the wife and I split nachos and a Crispy Chicken Tender Salad. Even with a split portion it still very filling. Side note: They offer a beer advent calendar every year. Great way to try some different beers throughout the holiday season. They pick and package the beers to make it a fun tradition. I'm sure we will be back at some point this week! read more
