Jackson is the founding place for coneys and the style of sauce is a thicker more dry type unlike Detroit's and other areas that use a runnier sauce. Virginia's sauce is thick but I've never cared for the flavor. To me their's is somewhat bland and greasier than a couple other spots in town that I like. I prefer Jackson Coney Islands and Andys over Virginia's. That being said they still use decent dogs and their breakfasts are quite good. Jackson and Virginia are in walking distance from eachother in the same building so you can sample them both similar to the way you can at Lafayette and National in Detroit. As I am still burping up my awful dinner from this place, do not bother. Just awful. Had burgers, fries, & onion rings(can explain the heartburn but this is like ate awful food digestion). The burgers-bleech. It is a frozen, then way over cooked burger with no flavor what so ever! The fries were fine, uncooked but we made do. The onion rings are not worth ordering-no flavor whatsoever & a very small portion-same on the fry portion. We were greeted by one person, then another person took our order---never to check on us again. And for two burgers/fries-it took 25 minutes so not sure what the long wait would be on a non busy Saturday afternoon. 4 staff members just lounging on their phones. But hey, it is par for the course. This is not a location in Jackson to stop. Don't let the other reviews fool you like they did us! Arg. read more

Hot dog tasted like its been on the oven all day. I asked for ketchup and got one small watered down line. Not going back.

I'll start this out on a positive note. This was the cleanest smelling Coney island I've ever been in. That being said, they were also having their ducts and fryers cleaned 30 minutes after we got there so I'm sure that was the reason. My first complaint was that there was nothing from the fryer available. Don't start your cleaning prep until you close! The most disturbing thing was the "Coney" itself (I use the term Coney very loosely here). What I received was as follows: a hot-dog looking substance that was rubbery and only luke warm, nestled in a slightly soggy bun. The meat(???) that topped the "dog" was said to be ground heart or some such concoction. I think it was actually ground swamp-a$$, rubbed with a dirty odor-eater, and slapped with an old dead catfish. Bottom line, it was AWFUL!!!! I actually thought a joke was being played on me. Throw in some slightly grilled slimy soggy onions, and third-rate mustard, and it was the WORST culinary experience I've had since I opened up a jar of Goobers and found ants inside (after I had started eating). Bottom line - Avoid this place like the plague, but if you must go make sure to order the side of extra-strength antacid. read more

Having been connected to the restaurant industry for many many years I can only say to an out of towner that this is not a BAD coney island but the coneys here are not the real authentic ones. The first Coney Island started in Detroit on Michigan Avenue before WWI, or the Great War as it was called back then. These were chili dogs and were named coney island hot dogs, nothing to do with coney island in NYC. A TRUE coney has chili, mustard and onions. That's it. George Todoroff never marketed on the SAUCE concept and that's why they cannot be classified as coney islands. New Yorkers call them Michigan hot dogs. The name originated in Detroit based on the hot dog that was sold in New York. Virginia coney island puts ground beef on their dogs and calls them coney islands. Absolutely false. There are only two coney island that make them this way and they are BOTH in Jackson, so what does that tell you? Virginia Coney Island has the best Coney dogs period. They are reasonably priced and the service has always been friendly and prompt. If you want chili dogs go to Detroit. This is the way Coney dogs are supposed to be made. read more

This is as old school and classic as a hot dog joint can be. This is a Jackson Michigan original and there is no better coney island hot dog on the planet. I just love my home town favorite! 1 coney island with extra onions, a order of mozzie sticks, and coffee with cream and sugar. Same order every time I go!! Pretty sad but this is the same place that I ate lunch with my grand parents at. My grand parents are gone, and Virginia Coney Island lives on!! This is Jackson inside and out! Love the staff! I have been going here ever since i was a little girl. Now i am almost 21. I loved going & i still do. I will not get coneys anywhere else besides here. I drive all the way across town just to go here. Also the fries with gravy are just amazing. I will continue to go here & only here! read more

Made a takeout order, was told 20 min wait... Get there and wait another 60 minutes when I'm told me they forgot to heat more coney meat?!?! How do you not have enough coney meat at a Coney Island????? Waited over an hour only to receive cold fries and soggy coneys with more onions then coney sauce! My wife and I have been driving from Lansing, MI to Jackson, MI for over 40 years to get coney island hot dogs as they are prepared in Jackson. We were once again @ Virginia's on Saturday and the place was really busy. We love their coney island hot dogs...and @ only $1.35/each you cannot beat them. Get this...Virginia's has been in business IN THE SAME LOCATION since 1914...so next year will be their 100th anniversary. Certainly they must be doing something right!! read more

I was born and raised in Jackson Mi. Have ate at all the coneys in Jackson for years. I moved north in 1997 and I always stop at one of them while I am visiting and make sure I stop there on way out of town to buy sauce and rice pudding. coney island even sends their sauce to people out of town/state. When my sons come visit I have them bring me coney sauce and rice pudding and a cup of the onions. Sure do miss having them close by. read more

My mom and dad grew up in Jackson Michigan and have grown up on these hot dogs. I have always loved them. We went there today with a trip from out of town.i I swear they always had Kogel hot dogs. But what we had today ways not.she said they have never had them. I clearly remember seeing a sign in the window. I only eat kogels. read more

Ordered a order of potatoes w sausage gravy. The portion was not the usual. I asked the server to to let the cook know. She advised the cook and the cook had a attitude right in front of me and then added more potatoes that turned out half way cooked on top. Having Attitudes and treating your customers like they don't matter will close the doors for places like this. Customers matter and how you treat them will affect your business more than you know ! Virginia Coney Island is a blast from the past. They still serve great coneys at a great price. I think their coneys are the best in Jackson but it is very dated which some will like and others not so much. read more

My boyfriend and I was just there to grab something to eat. The waitress seemed nice at first, but for some reason that quickly changed. I think she might have been having a bad day. So our food came and my boyfriends scrambled eggs were not throughly cooked. There was obvious white slimy parts in many different places she never came back to our table so we could let her know. We waited then finally my boyfriend just left to go to the car. I got up and located her to ask for a box for my coney and let her know about the eggs and she said "that's fine" and left it at that and I'm sitting there waiting for her to say something more and all that came was a horrible look. I went to the register to pay letting them know I wasn't trying to get out of paying (although he ate absolutely nothing) and I let the "person in charge" at the time know how rude she was being to us and really got no response from her either. We always go to Jackson Coney Island but I finally talked him into trying Virginia because I USED to love it there and the service. This upset me and as I left the girl gave me dirty looks again as I walked out. It was a very bad experience and unfortunately I will not be returning. I am a front office manager at a local hotel and would not have it if one of my employees handles a situation with one of our guest in such a manor I was having a good day. read more
