Basque cheesecake with orange gelato and caramel sauce

This is my second time here. I stumbled across it a few years back looking for gluten free food and came across this little place. I had the gluten free fish and chips last time and decided I want to come back here again for the fish and chips. I came in on a Sunday rainy evening and there were a lot of empty tables and was seated right away. The owner got my order for fish and chips. When it came out it was nice and hot. The fish was well cooked and crunchy on the outside and flaky on the inside. The chips were fresh and on the side was ketchup, tartar sauce and the tiniest thing of coleslaw I ever seen. It was all good but my only thing is I would love a little more coleslaw but I can't complain. Afterwards, I ordered basque cheesecake for dessert. It came with a small scoop of gelato and a caramel sauce. It was outstanding and enjoyed every bite. Definitely will come back for the fish and chips since it's gluten free.

First off the Virginia Inn is one of a handful of restaurants that has a significant GF menu. While not totally gluten free they have a lot of options and a dedicated fryer for GF choices which is rare. So they get star for that right away! On to the regular program, the service was solid. This is a small restaurant with a small staff that was working a fair number of tables so expect a wait if it's busy but in general the wait staff was pleasant and helpful. The food was good all around, I went for the fish and chips which was GF along with the calamari. My daughter hasn't had calamari for three years since being diagnosed with celiac disease. So that was a treat! Flavor and taste was good, a little different if you're use to flour based breading but still good. Hand cut fries were tasty as well and a little kick in the coleslaw! The cioppino was also a hit as well, good tomato broth and a full bowl of shell fish. General ambiance was a small old world slice with modern art all around. The Virginia Inn is known for its local art support and it's fun to see all around. Pricing is a bit high IMO but is definitely the Seattle trend these days. Averaged $32 per person so not terrible but on the higher side for lunch. All in all a good meal and a pleasant lunch with the family, I would recommend eating here if you're close by Pikes Place and looking for GF options.

Came here with friends as it was in the area and we were ready for some breakfast. Was seated and given waters. Our drink orders were taken along with food. I got the Shrimp and Grits. It comes with a couple pieces of toasted bread. I had to dump hot sauce on it to even add a sense of flavor. The shrimp was plump, but the sauce with the vegetables and andouille sausage bits was just lacking. The service also felt a bit off. Granted, there were 5 of us, but we asked for the check to be split evenly. It felt like we were hassling the waitress. Food is mediocre across what we ordered. Go to the biscuit establishment a few steps away perhaps.

Came to the VI on a Friday night and had dinner at the bar. The chowder and Brussel sprouts were probably my two favorite. The gumbo was decent and spicy and the fish and chips were what you'd expect. The location and vibe were the best part.

Lunch at Seattle's Historic Pike Place Market [Seattle WA] We stopped by VI for lunch. Inside has that historic and nostalgic ambiance including a full bar stocked with beer, wine, and cocktails. We waited to be seated which wasn't terribly long. We were seated by the window. We browsed through the menu and decided on the Steak & Eggs (for me) and Corned Beef Hash for the hubby. The meat was an 8-oz flatiron steak cooked medium, it was flavorful but not as tender as I would like. The home fries was good. Friendly and nice customer service. They have indoor and outdoor seating. VI is located on the corner of Virginia Street at First Avenue in Seattle, right next to the historic Pike Place Market and the only restaurant I know that close early for Super Bowl Sunday. Stopped in here for lunch on a weekday. This is a solid lunch spot. MB3 had the veggie sandwich with chips and I had the fish & chips with house tartar. Service was great and the food was delicious! We arrived as they were opening at 11:30 am. We were seated at the corner window, which was intimate and great for people watching. Since this is so close to Pike Place Market, there's lots of things to do and see in this area. I look forward to coming back for brunch!

It was a chilly windy day in Seattle, and a cup of Early Grey tea and a hearty meal of the Lamb Ragu was the best. The Tagliatelli pasta, rich sauce and lovely seasoned sauce on the Lamb Ragu - well...it was delightful and I finished every bit of it. Lovely little view seat by the front window was perfect for people watching and the waiter was kind and welcoming. I'd go back, for sure! Next time, I'll try to save room for the carrot cake!

Following up on the news that this long-time Seattle spot was throwing in the towel, I decided to make a final stop by before the lights go out. I went with fish and chips at lunch time since I'd had that on my mind. Must say I wasn't disappointed as the fish and fries were cooked to perfection. Virginia Inn was hopping as I was not alone in paying respects. The ambiance was great, not an empty seat in the house while I was there. I will hate to see this place leave after 122 years of existence. It's sad that the Market and restaurant ownership could not come to a compromise.

I love this place!! The food is top quality and delicious. And I appreciate that they have so many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. The service is super friendly, attentive, and accommodating. It also has such a cute vibe inside - the historical building, brick walls and tons of plants give it a really nice ambiance. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're ever near Pike Place or downtown Seattle! read more

Came here for dinner and had a good experience. Our server was great and personable. To start, we had the calamari. At first, we were a little surprised by the softness of the calamari rings but after we kept eating, we loved it and it felt fresh and tender. The accompanying aioli was excellent and we even saved it for fish and chips. For mains, we ordered the fish and chips (so excited because it was gluten free and the server also assured us that nothing with gluten goes in that fryer), and a Caesar salad. The fish and chips were excellent, so tender and well fried, and the sauces were all good. The Caesar was a little underwhelming, and to be fair, this might be a little pedestrian of me but I didn't love the overwhelming anchovy taste I got with some bites of the salad. We are so glad we stopped in the Virginia Inn. Food and service was wonderful. had the GF Beezer cheese curds which you'd never ever know are gluten free and really good. Also had the beet salad and added blackened salmon. Wish I could take the dressing home with me. Finished with chocolate martinis and overall a delightful experience. highly recommend read more

Gluten free heaven! So thankful to have so many GF options. I was craving fish and chips and found this place, but got so much more! We sat outside and enjoyed people watching while enjoying our meal. We started with drinks and a calamari appetizer. The calamari (gluten free) came with pickled onions and peppers that had the perfect kick to them. I got the fish and chips (gluten free) and my travel buddy got the steak salad. The fish and chips was amazing. I haven't found many places that successfully execute the gf fish and chips (normally the breading around the fish separates and breaks off when you bite into it) but they did an excellent job! The steak salad was more of a steak with a side salad, but it was so fresh and delicious (and who's Gona complain about more steak than expected?!) We finished with the cheesecake, it was good, but not particularly notable. Our server was fantastic. They were very attentive, but not overwhelming and kept our waters full! We also had pleasant interactions with other servers working, good vibes is always an added bonus. Hoping to visit again next time I'm in the area! read more

Do yourself a favor and take yourself to the Virginia Inn and sit in the corner booth (featured in the classic 1991 movie Singles) and order the raspberry lemon drop and either the steak frites or the fish and chips. Go with a friend, a parent, a date, or take yourself, it's always always a good time. I literally have never been sad with anything I've ordered and the staff are down to earth and nice. Love all the plants, love the floors, love the wood booths. Big Virginia Inn fan over here! read more

Wonderful dinner earlier this week with perfect service level provided by Tiarra. The evening started out with the hostess taking us to her favorite table which gave us a cozy location where we enjoyed the street scene and happy customers in the restaurant. Bowl of chowder was a wonderful way to start out the meal and things only improved when the halibut arrived. I recently enjoyed a pleasant brunch at this cute restaurant. After visited Pike Place Market, a cozy spot with some good food was just what I needed. The prices here are reasonable compared to other brunch spots near Pike Place Market. One of my favorites here is the salmon and clam chowder; it was so delicious! It was a creamy, perfectly seasoned bowl. Another favorite of mine here is the fried chicken and biscuits: freshly baked biscuits paired with crispy-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside chicken, alongside savory gravy and egg. The patio seating offers a delightful spot to enjoy sunny weather, while indoors exudes a cozy ambiance. Plus, this restaurant located right next to Pike Place Market is such a convenient location for whoever visits Pike Place Market. For visitors to Seattle looking for a relaxed breakfast or brunch place, this spot is a good choice. The service was prompt and attentive. Came in at around 3:50 on Saturday August 16th. 2025. Sat outside by the door. As I was sitting down I put my jacket on the chair next to me. The greeting staff turned around as if I was setting the place on fire and started berating me for putting it on the seat just incase someone else will sit on it. (Mind you, as you probably realized by the service, it's not packed, and that being the first interaction at this place really shows what they prioritize. They serve vita coffee which I got afterwards- the coffee was good- just not with the snapping behavior. Avoid unless they do some human interaction training. read more

The service here is attentive to a fault. It was honestly a bit overwhelming. We were in around 1:00 on a Saturday, so it was brunch time. The kids loved the French toast, though the serving was small for our seven year old. I had the fish and chips and found the fish a bit bland and dry. My husband enjoyed the burger. Overall, the fact that it was half empty for brunch on Saturday that close to Pike Place pretty much tells you what you need to know. read more

It's very much ok! If you're starving and there's not a wait, pop inside - sure. But nothing really stood out to me here except the history and feel of the corner restaurant. We had the Italian Sausage Frittata and the Fish & Chips. I wouldn't order either again. Frittata lacked flavor and spice although the large chunks of Italian sausage - it could've been crumbled more, remove the large potato wedges, and add some pepper, onions, and spinach for more flavor. Similar to other reviews, Fish & Chips is flavorless - not a juicy seafood fish chosen as the base. Tarter sauce was bland too. French fries were good. It just wasn't worth it for the price. Loved the historical feel but the place lacked cleanliness and had a weird odor. read more

I stopped in for a quick dinner around 8:30pm (they close at 9pm). They were courteous and accommodating even though it was so late and I was almost the last person in there. I ordered the Wild Mushroom pasta which was fresh, homemade pasta with at least 3 or 4 different types of mushrooms. And it was tasty and wonderful, and I had someone checking in on me every now and then. So what's the catch? NONE. They were pleasant and attentive and the pasta dish was really good. They were friendly and understanding, and I had a great meal with great service. I am pointing all of this out because it's so easy to complain about the littlest things. Yet this restaurant went out of their way to feed me a great pasta dish with no reservations and late notice. They could've told me they were closing but they said that they'd gladly seat me. I'll be heading back there again and I'll make a much-earlier reservation next time. But thank you for the great dinner. read more

My husband and I had lunch here as we didn't want to eat directly in the tourist section. It was about half empty so we were seated immediately. The service was quite fast and we enjoyed our food. I appreciated that they had gluten free marked on the menu and both of our dishes ended up gluten free so we were able to share. I would love to come back and try their brunch! read more

I had a really good Reuben Sandwich here, and also sampled my girlfriend's chicken sandwich. Solid good food food. As a rule of thumb, I believe you can test the quality of a place like this by sampling its Reubin. And this Reuben is really high quality. Great corned beef. Quality rye. Quality sauerkraut. I definitely approve. Also, a full bar with well-made cocktails. It's all a bit on the pricey side, but given the location (right new Pike's Place Market) I'm sure the rent is high. Also, given location, there may be a bit of a wait. This is a gem of an old school bar/restaurant in the heart of the tourist district. So if you want to get out of the crowd for a bit and check out a classic, it's well worth your time. read more

Wow! 3 of us are gluten free. We NEVER get fish and chips. My kids had never had fish and chips. Then I found Virginia inn while researching gluten free places to eat while visiting Seattle and found out the fish and chips at this place are gluten free!!!! The calamari is also gluten free. The ambiance inside feels like you're in the lobby of an old inn. Very cute. Our server was very polite and knowledgeable about gluten free. The food was very tasty. Even my gluten eating husband enjoyed the gluten free fish and chips :) my kids asked to go back again to get the GF fish and chips and GF calamari again. Highly recommend! No pictures because we devoured the food too fast. read more

At the Virgina Inn, the breakfast was solid and maybe close to 3.5 stars but there are a lot of good breakfast places in downtown Seattle. The menu is a bit limited but the charm of the place makes for a relaxing meal. read more

My family and I tried this historical establishment for the first time and it was unfortunately quite disappointing. Everything we ordered was overcooked and not under seasoned. (I usually eat bland food so this is saying a lot) I ordered the VI Classic off of the brunch menu. It came out without bacon so I informed a server that they it seemed like they forgot the bacon. She did ask if I wanted them to remake the bacon but had lost my appetite at that point and didn't want to order bacon I would not eat. Our party of 4 ended up here on a crowded Pike Place Friday afternoon as we wanted to sit down and not bump elbows with strangers while trying to eat. We were greeted quickly and sat in a booth. Atmosphere was pleasant enough, everything was clean. Upon looking at the menu, there wasn't a huge selection but simple means more in my opinion. We ordered two fried chicken sandwiches, one cheeseburger and one blue cheese steak salad. The burger was reported to be delicious and worth the $23. The fried chicken sandwiches, both who ordered were overall happy with their meal. For the steak salad, it was ordered without red onion and tomato, picky eater. No where on the menu did it mention cucumbers. Mini diced cucumber cubes throughout the lettuce and hardly any blue cheese. The steak portion of the salad was good but not worth $26. I am a firm believer you HAVE to mention all ingredients on the menu! Despite the busy night, our server checked on us regularly and was very personable, stopping to chat with us about the local sports scene. There's plenty to look at, inside and out. If you can snag a seat outside, you'll get to enjoy the waterfront. Inside, the decor is industrial but fun. Not sure if this runs all the time, but when we were there, the tvs were playing vintage beer ads, which was quite fun. They also sell some pretty good t-shirt designs. I recently had dinner at the Virginia Inn and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish! Kids Burger: The kids burger was a hit with my little one. It was perfectly sized, juicy, and came with a side of crispy fries that were devoured in minutes. The presentation was appealing, and it was clear they put thought into making it kid-friendly and tasty. Soup du Jour: The soup du jour was a pleasant surprise. It was a hearty and flavorful concoction that felt like a warm hug in a bowl. The ingredients were fresh, and the seasoning was spot on, making it a perfect start to the meal. Calamari: The calamari was cooked to perfection--crispy on the outside and tender inside. The accompanying dipping sauce added a nice kick, making each bite delightful. It was a generous portion, great for sharing. Shrimp and Grits: The shrimp and grits were the star of the show. The shrimp were plump and perfectly cooked, and the grits were creamy with just the right amount of cheese. The dish was well-seasoned, and the flavors blended beautifully, making it a comforting and satisfying choice. Overall, the Virginia Inn delivered a delicious and memorable dining experience. On our first night in Seattle, we were wandering around wondering where to go and stumbled on the Virginia Inn. I'm very glad we did! Truth be told, it's not the fanciest of places. Kinda like an old pair of jeans - worn but comfortable. But the food and service was terrific. We sat outside and shared the Penn Cove mussels and Tagliatelle with smoked salmon. Both were delicious. I will warn you that some toolboxes like to cruise up and down 1st Ave with their really loud cars and show off their exhaust systems so that was a bit annoying but that's not the fault of the Virginia Inn. Just know that if you want to have a nice conversation, you may find it difficult to do if you're outside. On our last night in town, we we're sure where to eat so what did we do? We went back to the Inn! Sure it was close to our hotel, but the quality and service made it worth a second trip no matter the distance. This time we has the pasta (again), but also some soups. The red pepper soup was damn good and helped on what was a bit of a cool and rainy day. If you find yourself in the market area, but don't want to deal with the crowds, walk a few blocks up 1st and eat at the Virginia Inn. read more

i came here on a saturday night after being rebuffed by the "meat markets" down on pike place. all in all, a great charming little, european style cafe/pub. the music was subdued and the clientele was a mixture of both young/trendy and old/neighborhoody. grab one of the few booths or belly up to the bar and have a nice conversation with your company. you wont have to fight the crowds (it was nearly empty, kind of a drag that night, but probably an anomaly) and the selection of beers was pretty decent. the only negative, im used to late new york bar closing times (4am), so when the bartenders started putting the stools up and closing down shop around 1:15 i was a little confused. i understand it was empty and the waitstaff wanted to peace out, but come on, 45 minutes prior to last call and your forcing out the patrons? i hate being rushed out mid beer. oh well. besides this inconvience, it was a nice place to go with friends for a casual drink. go early if youre not a last call guy like myself or youll be disappointed however. read more

I love the new, improved Virginia Inn! The food, the drinks, the beer, the people... did I mention the beer? They have everything I could possibly want - from Trumer Pils to Georgetown Brewing's new 9lb Porter! It's great! I was a regular years ago, but now that I don't live downtown anymore, I don't get to come in as often as I'd like... so this Saturday when I found myself downtown I couldn't resist heading to the VI to check out the remodel. My boyfriend and I got to sit at our favorite old table in the window (so happy they didn't change it!!!), and our waitress Andi was fabulous - she gave great recommendations when we ordered (we got the crabcake and the moules - both were delicious!) I'm kind of upset that I waited so long to come back - I've missed out on a few months of fabulous new food! read more

After a rocky year, the post-remodel Virginia Inn has finally hit it's stride. I was in about a week ago, and everything was great - just like the old VI I remember. My server, Andi - I finally asked her name after years of seeing her around, was friendly as always and made great recommendations. I had the Fried Duck Egg, which was just crazy - it looked nothing like I expected, and tasted way better than I thought possible. For dinner, I had the Pork Chop, and the risotto that came with it was worthy of it's own dish. Fabulous! I hear they have a new late night menu, which I will be sure to try out the next time I'm in the neighborhood after 10 pm! read more

The Virginia Inn - A Nostalgic Delight! I recently dined at The Virginia Inn with my son visiting from LA, and it was a wonderful, nostalgic experience! Years ago, I remembered this spot fondly, and it did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with perfect, amazing service. Our waitress was hilarious and added a lot of fun to our meal, making the experience all the more memorable. We ordered salads and chicken sandwiches, which were beyond the pale--absolutely delicious! The Virginia Inn remains delightful, and I can't wait to go back again. A must-visit for anyone seeking a warm, welcoming restaurant. read more

Finally! A late night menu I can get excited about! After a long night of drinking, the boyfriend and I stumbled into this place and were so excited to find that there was actual food available! The boyfriend had the fried duck egg, which looked ridiculously cool, and he said it was amazing (I'm not a fan of duck eggs, so I'll have to take his word for it. The fried ham that came with it was yummy though!) I had the Grilled Calamari, and it was outstanding. The bartender was great, very friendly and just talkative enough. I hear they have happy hour now, so I'll definitely be back - often! read more

Wife and I walked around Pikes Market, we were going to eat there, I stayed behind to take some more photos she went in to use the restroom and as soon as she came out she was berated by an ass clown, we're assuming the owner, about using the restroom like it was someone's "home", wouldn't even let her explain that we actually had plans to eat there. I wish she would've let me give him a piece of my mind but we will NEVER step foot in this establishment and will encourage anyone going to or in Seattle to do the same read more

In the summer, this place makes you feel like you might be in a little Viennese cafe in the middle of the first district. However, when you wake up, you are right smack in the middle of downtown on first ave, and the world is at your fingertips. If you can't get out to vacation this year, go to this place around 3-ish, get a gin and tonic, smoke a cigarette and find yourself drunk downtown in the daylight. read more
