Amazing food, great atmosphere & wonderful service! -- true Italian food. Highly recommended!

Visaggios has always been a personal favorite of ours. We have been customers for many years and we can honestly say the food has remained consistently delicious. As far as service goes, we have never had a bad experience. We have known and requested Mimi though for years now. She always makes us feel like family and such a fun time every time we dine there. They are only Visaggios in name and in no other sense. We have been going to Visaggios restaurant before the change in ownership for over 20 years. We are only on this side of the state a few times a year but previously Visaggios was a must stop, after tonight I don't believe we will ever go back. The new owners got rid of everything that made this place special. The entire menu has been changed so there is not one carryover from the previous owners. The menu prices for any entree other than basic pasta dishes are top tier pricing ($45 on average) for food that was lackluster at best. Nothing is homemade anymore, bread was store bought and flavorless, they do give an oil dressing to dip it which did have a good flavor. We ordered the formaggio which previously was a delicacy that was only available there and what they brought out was relatively flavorless fried mozzarella squares, pretty much akin to what you could find at a grocery store (and less flavorful than what a olive garden or similar tier of restaurant would provide). I will say the lobster bisque was excellent and meaty. The specialty Ragu Neapotano was tasty but literally was nothing special. Same with the Vitello Marsala which was unlike any veal Marsala I've had before (it had shrimp and prosciutto for some reason) wasn't bad tasting but it's almost as if they added that just for the sake of trying to be different for no added benefit. The portion on the Marsala was a little small for the price and the pasta seemed store bought. All the new desserts of the house are on display in a fancy dessert cabinet however they all appear to be the exact same store bought desserts you can find anywhere(peanut butter pie, perfectly cut carrot cake, generic chocolate cake etc.) also no tiramisu, what kind of self respecting "upscale" Italian restaurant doesn't have tiramisu. Now for the service we came in wearing shorts and Tshirts, nothing fancy because the restaurant has a casual dining side while the waitress was attentive initially after we put the food in we barely saw her it took over 20 minutes to get a drink refill (she only had 4 tables right next to each other including ours) and when asked for a refill she took the glass back in the kitchen, then forgot about the iced tea we asked for, joined a happy birthday song, checked on the other two tables, almost walked past us again before I was able to get her attention to get said drink. After that when we were done with our food and already had it boxed we watched her spend probably five to ten minutes making small talk to her 8 top 10 feet away (who were done eating) where we couldn't even get a glance our direction. We had to flag a busboy to get a waiter so we could get our check since we were long past ready to leave by that point. It kind of felt like we were being discriminated against due to our appearance however over the years we've spent thousands and thousands of dollars at Visaggios because we typically bring in our whole crew of 6-15 when we are in town and we always tip well 20% plus even tonight with our bad service. We even once brought in 37 people on one check so to be ignored for our appearance is your loss. So word of advice to the staff and waitress that were focused on the well dressed people, don't judge a book by its cover because usually it's the dressed down person who has the most money and an appreciation for the working man and good service. Also and sadly not a single face from the old staff was anywhere to be seen, I don't like that at all and it sets a precedent for what kind of establishment you must have become. I have eaten at Italian restaurants all around the world and I am not lying when I say this is akin to Olive Garden with a few more seafood options and fancier platings. Do yourself a favor save your money and go somewhere else. And to the new owners good job at taking something special and making it mediocre at best. read more

This is an overpriced, wanna-be italian menu, with a nursing home esthetic and the chef who seems to think pasta should swim in crisco and that $45 steak should be seasoned in soy sauce! let's add in being able to hear servers being literally cussed at in the kitchen?!! Last year, I noticed that Visaggios started charging separately for salads. Last night, we paid $ 90 for 2 veal dinners, water, and bread. Additionally, because there were 11 in our party, a 20% tip was included on our bill. For 20%, we got a waitress who spent '10 minutes' whining about how difficult it was to give us separate checks, only delivered our food and removed the plates, never checked on us, and never refilled our water glasses. Certainly not work a 20% tip. I understand that 'everything today' is more expensive. However, Visaggios used to serve a salad and nice dinner for one price. Now they serve an overpriced dinner with an overpriced salad (salads start at $ 5.95 and go up) with mediocre service. We don't intend to go back. read more

Met friends at this nice restaurant. Was my first time there. Very nice warm welcoming atmosphere. We had reservations and were seated immediately. Our server was very attentive and personable. My daughter got married at Visaggios last week. It was the most amazing and stress free event EVER. Julie and John were amazing to work with! Always available to answer questions, always reassuring the bride that it will all be perfect! and it was!! First of all, the FOOD. AMAZING. We are Italians. They are Italian. If you have money to waste it's a lot of fun, it's very similiar to a game show..... will we get the same amount of food we did last time or half as much this time around. My husband and I love homemade Italian food. Vissagios is hand down the best we have found in the Harrisburg area. We've lived in the area for over 30 years and we're still wondering what took us so long to visit. Food and service is outstanding. We originally ate at Visaggio's 40 years ago. We moved halfway across the country but never forgot this gem of a restaurant. On a recent visit to Pennsylvania we were amazed to find Visaggio's still open and being operated by the same family. It's been years since I've been here, but if my memory serves me correctly, it looks almost the same as it did prior to the fire. Someone referred to it as a supper club and I would have to agree with that statement. Our group of 13 was seated in a private room since we were celebrating a birthday. The table was perfectly set with pristine white linens. We had two servers to take care of our group and food orders were promptly taken. Unfortunately beverage service was not as prompt, and some of our group sat with an empty glass until one of our servers returned. Several in our group ordered an appetizer. Being a cheesaholic, I opted for the Formaggio in Carrozza. Those little pods of melted cheesey deliciousness with marinara on the side, took me to my happy place! Homemade bread was served with butter and also a hot pepper olive oil. I selected Arturo as my Entree, although the seafood was fresh and prepared perfectly, I was disappointed when it was served over spaghetti and not linguine as described on the menu. It was good but not something I'd order again. As a finale to our meal, our servers brought in a tray of homemade desserts that looked divine. I was too full to order anything but did sneak a bite of the tiramisu my girlfriend got, and it melted in my mouth. Typically their policy is one check for parties of 8 or more with a 20% gratuity added. Several of us asked if they could do separate checks with the 20% added to each. Initially they said that all they could do was divide our total bill up and run separate credit cards. Maybe it was because they weren't that busy, they finally agreed to give us separate checks. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED!! I had the nerve to bring my wife hear on our anniversary for a nice dinner, but due to her busy schedule we did not make reservations. Big mistake. It was a normal week night, The restaurant was not busy at all. It did not take long to seat us but then to our surprise the entire wait staff completely ignored us for a full 45 minutes. I have never in my life walked out of a restaurant, but this night I did. Never to return. The food came highly recommended and their website did not mention that reservations were required. The very least they could have done was told us immediately that reservations were required instead of ignoring us completely. read more

What a horrible experience. Our waiter was a nice young man, but seemed overwhelmed with the few tables he had. We waited patiently, and gave them every opportunity to provide us with a typical restaurant experience, however they failed miserably. The main issue for me was the quality of the food. It looked terrible, and tasted even worse. My wife had the veal, and it looked gray and unappealing. She ate it, but regretted doing so afterwards. I had a chicken dish hat was inedible. It looked disgusting and tasted even worse. I took one bite, and found the taste so offensive, that I immediately sent it back. At this point, I figured it was safer not to order anything else, and just let the nightmare end. But then it gets even worse. The cook comes out of the kitchen, comes right up to me, and basically starts explaining that he is a good cook, and he could have made me something else. His demeanor seemed intimidating and annoyed. I wasn't sure what was going to happen at this point, but I felt threatened and extremely uncomfortable. This was by far the weirdest, and most disappointing restaurant experience I have ever encountered. I could not recommend this establishment under any circumstances. read more

This is a great Italian place in Mechanicsburg. It has reopened after a fire and the food is still as delicious as I remember from past visits. I ordered the Zia Maria dish- filet medallions, shrimp, and scallops over linguine with a red sauce. The filet was seasoned well, but pounded into thin pieces, so it was well-done. The shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked and the sauce was classic Italian carbonara. My husband got the vitello cardinale- veal sautéed and topped with crab imperial. The veal was very lightly floured and cooked in butter and was perfect! The crab imperial had large pieces of jumbo lump crab and the sherry cream sauce was well-balanced. We shared a piece of their famous Italian wedding cake and we both loved it! Someone said they don't always offer it, so if you see it, get a slice! It is the perfect end to a very enjoyable meal. read more

The food was great and so was the service. We were in the ballroom for a holiday party and I was amazed by how beautifully they put it all together with a very short notice. The appetizers were delicious and I definitely spoiled my appetite by going overboard on the crab stuffed mushrooms and the fried gnocchi. The chopped salad was the real showstopper. I can't stop thinking about the sweet cranberries mixed with walnuts and carrots, perfectly paired with blue cheese crumbles. The meal was my main regret. I should have gotten the crab cakes but went with the servers suggestion of the Maria Elena, which was far too buttery and the steak was undercooked and unflavorful. However, my leftovers the next day were surprisingly more tasty than the night before. Next came the desserts which was probably the best piece of New York cheesecake I've ever had. Really bland, and has so much potential to warm this place up. The food was actually pretty good. Not the great stuff I can get on every block in South Philly but it was decent. Fantastic. No doubt we will return. The food was almost unbelievably good. I watched an 89 year old woman devour a plate of homemade ravioli. I've never seen her eat that much food all at once. I thoroughly enjoyed the "Elena Maria," which was medallions of filet mignon with jumbo shrimp served on a bed linguini with garlic butter and ramono cheese sauce. I planned to eat half and take half home for the next day's lunch. I did take half home, but I couldn't wait. I ate it as soon as I arrived home! I also had Italian wedding soup as an appetizer and cake for dessert - both delicious. Others at the table described similar happiness with their selections. Here are the negatives. It took a long time for my water glass to get filled. We ate in the informal dining area which was loud, and we felt oddly decorated. The worst part of all - it's expensive. $30 for my entree, which didn't include salad. Was it worth it? Heck yeah. So, if you are angling for a place to go don't be afraid to splurge. The food was good, but nothing that stands out to me as being exceptional. It is definitely WAY overpriced for the reality of what you are getting. Supper club chique. This place has an informal as well as a formal dining room. My. Wife had the seafood ravioli and my friends and I had the fruti Del Mar or linguini with shrimp, scallops clams and mussels in a wine sauce. The shrimp were very over done and highly suspect the minced clams were canned. However the wait staff were excellent and the dishes were piping hot. Our friends who live near by have been there several times with mention that each visit is a tad below the previous...and won't be back. In its hay day it probably was THE supper club to go to. It has been one of our favorites for more than 25 years, eating there several times a year although the level of food has lessened over the years. We ate dinner there last night. The service was attentive and good. The food (Veal, steak and crab cakes) were all disappointing. Although "lump crab" is listed on menu, it is now pureed crab. Crab cakes laced with nutmeg, veal and steak both very tough. Vegetables and salad now a la carte? Two out of three meals went 1/2 uneaten. Cannot recommend, won't be back. read more

I was surprised to read the negative reviews. I've always loved going to Visaggio's for special occasions. Its casual fine dining, and has an old school italian / romantic vibe. Its a perfect "nice" date place. For appetizers I would recommend the peppers and sausage as my fave.. then calamari, oysters, gnocchi, and stuffed mushrooms (haystacks). Don't waste your money on a salad... (comes with entrees but not pasta dishes.) All of the pasta is homemade and therefore amazing. they have the best gnocchi in the area by far. The Filomena is a great sampler of all the pastas. St Gabriel's Fire is my favorite entree (or WAS i should say, before i stopped eating red meat) It is filet mignon medallions with portobello mushrooms and fried eggplant with bacon and a spinach cream sauce... (get a side of gnocchi with it!) They make some killer veal dishes as well. Okay when it comes to desserts its pretty much heaven... I almost always get the Pots de Creme.. (which is like chocolate bliss) however it is imperative that you ask if they have their Italian wedding cake... i don't believe that its on the menu but i know they have it occasionally and it is the best cake i have ever had. I've driven by this place for years, and kept saying "one day I have to try it." I finally did tonight, and I'm regretful. Decent wine list. We chose Riesling by the glass...nothing stunning, but fair pricing and good options to choose from. The crusty bread was tasty. I think they must bake it fresh; while it wasn't "amazing," it was the highlight of the meal. The starter salad was a bit odd - mixed greens with a couple of mandarin orange slices and a half slice of canned pineapple. The fact that another reviewer raved about the Seafood Ravioli is an absolute statement about taste being subjective. I found it to be disgustingly overcooked, understuffed, and watery with a sauce that was nearly flavorless. At almost $30, this entree was a complete bomb. I ate a few bites, but it was too gross. What a bummer...I love ravioli, I love seafood, I love Italian food...this was a yuck on all counts, though. The server seemed nice enough, but ignored us to the point that I wasn't sure we were getting the check. What a mistake this place was...by its history, I have to assume this place might have been great at some point, but my opinion is that it's obviously resting on its laurels these days. Cosmopolitan - absolutely delicious. Bread with "hot pepper" olive oil - not so hot, but so tasty. Seafood Ravioli - so incredibly amazing I saved the last bite til after I wiped all the sauce on bread and ate that! The service - not so great, and the waitresses look sort of trashy. But the food is so good, you'll suck it up. This is a great place for a romantic dinner or a nice birthday with friends - or just a place to treat yourself. Throw the diet out the door and enjoy the delicious Italian cuisine in a beautiful setting. read more

Mixed review as two enjoyed dinner and two were less than satisfied. Also - service was friendly enough but SLOW. Started with appetizers - the gnocchi was good once we figured out the sauce was under and not on the actual gnocchi. Bruschetta good but skimpy. The pasta sampler entree was disappointing in that the meatballs were flavorless and the sausage had an odd texture. Lasagna was excellent. The Bobina was a huge hit. Every bite consumed of a very generous portion if crab and shrimp and filet. The Arturo was also a miss - red sauce bland. But the Frutti da Mare Julian was marvelous in spite of the gritty mussels. Rich creamy sauce over scallops and shrimp over pasta. Great dessert options - next time we'll skip appetizers and save room. So a mediocre review on the food. Went for the company holiday party with low expectations but the service was great, food was amazing, and the portions were just the right side of big. Definitely give the chopped salad a try, it was the all around hit at our table. And give up on saving room for dessert, just get it to go. read more

I have to write a review to bring up the score a little. It was nice to see the owner comment about her business, I'm sure she's worked very hard for many years to build its name. I've worked in food service when I was younger, and while I didn't work at this place, many things can affect service, food quality, and an experience on any given day. Both times I've been there, the food was delicious. I think the negative ratings may be more the exception than the norm. I went with 17 people once and everyone loved it. The atmosphere on my first trip with a group led me to bring my girlfriend there on her 30th birthday with a group of friends last February. I cannot say enough good things about the place, maybe we were a bit loud for the environment in retrospect. They were accomodating to my group size of 17 and I worked with the staff to offer a select menu for my guests. 17 people can get pricey :) That being said, the only down side was our drinks took awhile to get filled and replaced, but I attribute that to the packed house that night. The first time I was there I had lasagna that was legendary. I took my butter knife and with very little pressure my lasagna parted like the red sea. It was beautiful and so fresh tasting. The one other thing I remember from the first visit was the seasoned hot oil for the bread. It was surprisingly good! I live in York and I love Italian food. Sadly, there aren't a lot of great choices local to me for quality food, and less for a fine dining experience. Luckily, this led me to discover Visaggio's. It is a little pricey, but for me, this is keeping backwards hat guy out of the dining room. I'll pay the extra $5-$10 per plate to see everyone dressed to the nines instead of trucker bob wearing his flannel woofing down a ginormous plate of noodles and ketchup.
