At one point we ran a medication change the hospice doctor recommended past our hospital physicians who told us in no uncertain terms to NOT follow the hospice doctor's advice as there would be immediate health consequences to our loved one. After that, we ran all medications and care questions through our personal physicians only. In terms of the timeliness with which problems with medication refills and equipment orders/issues were dealt with we'd rate them a D. There was very much an attitude of "we can call tomorrow to get that...". The last time they gave us response it had to do with equipment that helped us monitor medication dosages - NOT something that can wait till tomorrow! We did have one care provider that was exceptional but I'm afraid that one person was not always our primary care contact. In addition, Capital Caring did provide medical equipment and checked our loved one's vitals 2-3 times a week (when we left the hospital we were told they'd come 5 days a week but that's another story). We went with Capital Caring because they were the only option the hospital gave us per our insurance. We hope that other families, given a choice, will have the opportunity to consider a wider range of options.

I feel so hurt that my sweet Mom who cared for people for over 30 years had a pain filled day on her last day on earth. They promised to make her comfortable but in the end when I needed them most they let her and my family down. We waited for them to find her a bed from 9:00 am to 3pm when the ambulance arrived in rush hour. My Mom died 1 hour after arriving in the hospice inpatient facility in Arlington this place was the only good thing about capital caring at least my mom had one hour of comfort on her final day Shame on you capital caring. So sad you called non stop until we signed up and then went into the shadows. I wouldn't wish you on my enemy. Feel totally disrespected

They were professional, dependable, knowledgeable, considerate and kind. I would love to commend them. however they could only perform their duties as well as the administrative operations within WHCH would allow. As for the administrative side of the company, If I could give less than 1 star I would. During a time when my family's hearts were breaking and my husband had a very short time to live, I was constantly faced with WHCH "back-office" issue after issue; beginning with his transition home from the hospital, all the way to the delay in his certificate of death. Because I was focused on caring for my husband, I feel somewhat that WHCH took advantage of my distraction to provide less than excellent service. The statement I am making now is to impress whatever impact I can on whomever may be considering using this company. And to either have The Washington Home & Community Hospices REMOVED from the resource books at local medical facilities or to have associated organizations implement some sort of rating/notification system that would alert families in choosing WCHC service, they may be putting their loved-ones final days of comfort in the hands of a company that is ill-prepared to meet the commitment. It is my desire that no other family has this same experience.

He was waiting and waiting for the food to arrive. We were on the phone with him, and his strength and mental capacity were deteriorating while he was on the phone. He was increasingly slurring. We could hear him ringing the call button for the nurse and the nurse was not coming. He kept getting weaker and weaker. Finally, a tech came in the room for something. We could hear my father ask her if the food was coming. We could hear her say that it was coming. He asked if she could tell him what time it would come. She said no. We asked him to put her on the phone so that we could talk to her. She said that she was not permitted to talk to us, that we would have to call the nurses station. We hung up and called the nurses station. My brother told the nurse to get my father some food. The nurse said to someone, "what is that tray still doing here, take that in" so the food was sitting right there the entire time. We waited a few minutes and then called my father. He was totally recovered, happily eating his dinner. We were unable to reach the charge nurse over two days of frantic calling. She does not return messages. We called the social work head person first thing this morning and she has not returned our calls. Bottom line: Don't send anyone here.

Instead, we were put in direct contact with the owner Josie that night. She could not have been more supportive and compassionate with us when we explained what we needed. She immediately sprang into action and came up with a care plan for us that enabled us to keep our family member at home. The quality of care that was provided was top notch and I cannot recommend it enough. I gave them 5 stars, as the top rating on this site but I would gladly give them 10. If you want to get top notch quality care for your loved one, please contact Josie and be assured that you are getting them the best care available.

Mom has Alzheimer's and I'm her primary caregiver; we live together. I've used 3 different agencies…read morewhen I needed additional help. My experience with the first two agencies was frankly terrible, and it drove me to put in a LOT of effort and time into finding individuals I could hire directly. But when my own knee surgery resulted in a short-term need, it seemed a good opportunity to try another agency. I'm so glad that I did! Assisting Hands is now part of my long-term strategy for making this care arrangement work as long as it possibly can. A geriatric care manager -- in a position to know about many different agencies -- recommended Assisting Hands to me. From the start it has been a significantly different and better experience than working with other agencies. They are large enough to truly have their act together, yet small enough to be incredibly personable and accessible. Their caring, responsiveness, flexibility and efficiency are truly fantastic. They get the big important things right: they ask smart questions and truly listen to your answers to try to find people ideally suited to your needs; they have a large pool of truly qualified people to draw from; they work really hard to have one caregiver cover as many of your requested shifts as possible even when it's a non-standard, changeable schedule; they don't pressure you for more hours than you need, nor pass you from one administrator to another every week; they don't artificially jack up prices when they hear desperation in your voice or shame and blame you when a caregiver doesn't fit your needs. They also get the secondary details right: they are always reachable, their response time is incredible, their nurse does an intake in the least obtrusive way possible and even then only when required by Maryland state law or the tasks involved, caregivers can login via an app that utilizes GPS for an efficient time card system, they can help with longterm care insurance reimbursement, and paying invoices is a snap online. I really couldn't ask for more. They get my highest recommendation...and my continued business!
