It is a privilege to write about Dr. Sang and her team. Not only is Dr. Sang an elite and amazing…read moredoctor, but she shows compassion and really cares. Sometimes, that makes you feel better and is more needed than the treatments! At a time when I feared losing my vision due to macular degeneration, she was reassuring and supportive , and always answers my never ending list of questions, and with patience. Another side of Dr. Sang that I recently learned about is her mentorship. There are a group of young college grads working there who are taking a gap year and preparing to get into medical school. She is so giving and proud of how many of these interns have gone on to great careers. Each time you go for an appointment, it's a "major production." There are so many steps in the process and I have come to understand why it takes so long -- they take no shortcuts! There is a huge staff that supports Dr. Sang and each one has a specialty, from the people who answer the phone and make appts. to the people who do complicated eye scans. I don't envy the appt. people as everyone seems to want a different time -- including me -- and it's hard to make everyone happy, although they try. I guess my only complaint is that I wish I could turn back Dr. Sang's clock about 25 years so that she'd be in practice for another 25+ years. While she is around, I feel incredibly lucky for her to be my doctor!

She is also extremely warm, compassionate and can explain complex problems in a very clear way. I have been seeing her for many years ever since she did emergency laser surgery on me after an accident. Yes, sometimes the wait is long, but you are told in advance how much time to allow for your appointment. It is absolutely worth the wait if you want the most comprehensive, experienced evaluation/follow up. All the staff are great. Monica is a gem and all the technicians and students revere Dr. Sang, for good reason. I always take Dr. Sang's recommendations regarding other aspects of my health as well. She looks at my general health and reviews all my test results and gives me solid, thoughtful advice.

Base on my personal experience from consultation to recovery:…read more Consultation appt was done in Milford closer to home. Location was great, staffs were really friendly, wait time can be long as it seemed that they were trying to fit in as many patients as possible. Dr Patel was pleasant and the assistants were all helpful and friendly. However, I felt rushed by my appointment. The following up email from the lasik team was always very efficient and helpful guidance to what to expect, videos of the procedure, the dos and don'ts for recovery and other additional information were sent out by email. The lasik team was able to answer questions via email. I felt a bit more at ease knowing what to expect from the surgery. A month before the surgery date, I was informed that my doctor won't be doing my surgery. I have had to reschedule my surgery. It was a bit unexpected since I have already taken those dates off from my workplace. Anyhow, I was able to get my surgery done a week before my original appointment. It was done by Dr Brenner instead. On Monday of my surgery week, I received my surgery time and more details by email. Parking can be a pain especially there isn't any designated parking lot for Boston Vision. Meters are everywhere so you can park on the street. Upon arrival, there was a bit of waiting time. Then more testings done. Met with Dr Brenner after one or two testings. They finalized and corrected something important in the contract regarding of my right eye being the distance eye and left eye to be the eye for reading since I was doing mono vision lasik. Dr Brenner was nice and easy to talk to. Answered a couple of my concerns and questions. From then on, they asked me to sit in the waiting area and to be called in for surgery. Then an assistant came back and ask me to re do one of the eye exams coz they didn't get the results or right readings. Went back to re do the test then I was being asked to sit in the lounge room to be called for the surgery. Snacks and water or drinks were provided. As I walked into the surgical room, lots of bright lights above me. I laid down on a flat bed and immediately the assistants put some numbing eye drops on my eyes. Everything kind of just went really fast. One after an other. My left eye definitely needed more numbing drops as I asked. So they went to my right eye and started there first. I could see the whole procedure. Tool to open my eye lids and kept them open. I think they said it took about 12 mins for both eyes. But the most traumatic experience I had was with the left eye, I could feel the pressure pressing against my eye, the blurred vision as they lifted up the flap, the smoking or burning smell of the lasik when I stared at the green dots or light, the tool they adjust the flap back on.... I could feel it all. But the right eye not so much, just the huge pressure and the blurry vision. After the procedure was over, I was guided to the other room, and out the waiting room already. I was given written instructions to follow up the day of, the day after to a week of what to avoid and what to do for recovery process. Eye drop medication to apply, Artificial tear drops, eye shields and protection sunglasses too all including in the take home kit. The first night was the hardest, no face wash and avoid water in the eyes. Slept with the eye shield and applied eye medication. I would recommend to stick with everything that they told you! It's been finally a week, my vision is still a bit blurry but 20/20 vision according to Dr Patel (from the one week follow up appt). Needs to be patient with the healing process. Overall, I am glad I did it despite the discomfort and inconvenience for a couple of weeks or months.

On top of this extraordinary wait, the patient workflow is very inefficient. I was seen separately by three different nurses, and registration-related steps were handled twice in separate interactions. There appears to be unnecessary duplication at a time when the hospital is telling patients that it does not have enough staff. I understand that hospitals can become busy and emergencies take priority. But being short-staffed is an operational problem that hospital management needs to address. Patients should not be expected to absorb the consequences by waiting an entire day for care. If staffing is inadequate, management should have a contingency plan and organize available resources more efficiently. The combination of an extreme wait, inadequate staffing, repetitive steps, and poor patient flow suggests a larger management problem rather than an unavoidable delay. My criticism is not directed at the individual nurses or frontline staff. It is directed at the system and management. Mass Eye and Ear is a major hospital, and patients should be able to expect far better organization, communication, and respect for their time.

Our experience at MEEI was horrible from rude staff, unreliability where they didn't return our calls, and more. This place was just above and beyond in comparison!! And felt as if we were at a "5 star hotel" for a private office compared to MEEI's 2.5 star hotel rating... Parking is tight at one of their office location (West Roxbury), but the medical center in Norwood and other place had parking which was helpful! And was free. After deciding to go with this specialist due to their experiences, knowledge, and care (unlike MEEI's), they were responsive to our questions and calls. We appreciated that a great deal. We absolutely adore Mary, one of their office staff in addition to the attending nurses (all were great) and the doctors too!

They were also very friendly and informative about the causes for my issues and suggested courses of action to deal with root causes. Overall these offices in Norwood and West Roxbury were outstanding in every way and I am lucky to have found them. Thank you all.

He explained the issue thoroughly, answered all my questions, and was overall very friendly and patient. No complaints. On my follow-up, though, I waited for an hour and a half to see him for less than five minutes for him to check my eye and give the all-clear. Fast forward to a year later, when I was truly apprehensive about another long wait time in the middle of a work day. This time, for an annual eye exam, I was in and out for about an hour, which wasn't too bad. The technician I saw before Dr. Kaufman was great - I wish I got his name. He was painstaking in making sure my prescription was right and going over what he was doing. Excellent bedside manner. So, all in all, I think this office has made improvements in reducing patient wait time. That said, one suggestion I have is to validate parking for patients. This is one of the few doctor's offices I've been to where they don't offer this and it bothers me - patients can wait up to an hour and the parking ticket (which isn't a flat rate) is one extra cost on top of the bill. The parking situation next to the office is also stressful. During peak times, the lot right next door is full or reserved for residents and you have to scramble to find another spot in the garage across the street.
