first time here and let me say, this place is amazing. we had the pork belly guac, a ceviche, the vochos roll, and hubs had bone marrow with octopus. food was phenomenal and their corn tortillas incredible. downside? my belly wasn't big enough to plow down more food. also their passion fruit pisco sour was legit. highly recommend. go hungry. the service was excellent as well. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with the modifications made to this building that were fresh, modern, and bold. The seating was comfortable and roomy. The building was light and airy. The menu was intriguing filled with new things. I must admit it was a little pricey, but what was being offered seemed to be worth it. I wasn't quite sure what the name of the building meant or what the cuisine truly was. It didn't appear to be regular Mexican. Our server was just delightful. He was ready to serve us and provide everything we would need. My guest enjoyed her sangria, and I enjoyed my water, although the cocktail menu was refreshingly new with lots of choices. We didn't decide to have an appetizer, good thing as the cornbread was more than filling, especially enticing with the jalapeno butter! After seeing lobster sushi on the menu I was even more intrigued as to what part of Mexico this menu might be from. The server indicated it was from Mexico City. I had watched several foodie shows that spoke of Mexico City and their foray into the modern food experiences. Wilmington is the beneficiary of this great new exciting eatery! I ended up taking home more than 2/3 of my meal, as did my friend. With that being said, I still inquired about dessert, just so I could report to you what was being offered. They had two things at this moment in time, Tres Leches Cake with fresh passion fruit, and a Choco Flan, It was not easy to say no to those, but I did. I believe I will go back there again very soon. The food was superior, the weight stuff. Excellent, the ambiance was fresh and I really liked it. Would be a mistake for you to miss this place. I think we need to support places like this that come to Wilmington. They're taking a chance on us, let's take a chance on them. Check out their menu. It is exciting and fresh. My wife and I finally tried Vochos last night. Overall, it was a great experience, and we'll definitely go back! The staff were all super friendly and attentive to us throughout our meal. The owners even came over several times to check in how we were enjoying our meal. The ambiance was really nice too, including the light fixtures and tables, and the bar area looked nice too. They even had a ceiling fixture outside of the bathrooms made from old hanging phone receivers, which was unique. The food was delicious. We tried the queso appetizer, with chorizo, which came out on a hot skillet, and was really good. We would've preferred to have had a fourth tortilla to eat the melty queso on, so we could each have two, but split the third tortilla. The entrees were warm, but not hot, and we went later in the evening, when the restaurant wasn't as crowded. Also, I would've liked a little more seafood in the paella, as there was more rice than seafood, especially for the price. Finally, the seafood in the paella was a little overcooked, making it a little dry and tough. But overall, a really nice meal, and we want to return to try some more of the items on the menu, like the enchiladas with mole, the salmon, or the tacos. read more

This might be the most important addition to the Wilmington culinary scene in several years. It offers a truly unique product. It says "Mexican" but it offers something much higher quality than the Tex-Mex you can find easily (and there are several good-to-excellent "Tex-Mex" restaurants in Southeast NC. ) It is pricier than any of the "competition", but the quality and experience justifies that. Two senior adults, we decided to beat the rush and arrived at 4:30 on Monday for our first visit. (We are part-time Wilmington residents...for 22 years. We had only just discovered a Vochos review.) We got to leisurely enjoy time with our outstanding personable server, Juan, who explained the owner's philosophy in setting up a higher-end, Mexico City-quality experience. Later, well into our meal, the Owner Alex Zaragoza visited our table and shared more of his philosophy and dream (he is from the family that owns the successful San Felipe Mexican Restaurants in Southeast.) He has taken a chance in an unsettled economy and deserves to be rewarded for "moving the bar" up in Wilmington. We had studied the online dinner and cocktail menus and knew "this was going to be different." Our challenge was to find the "easter eggs" for our first experience. Reading the menu descriptions, we knew the preparation would be unlike any we had experienced in the "Mexican" genre. Our first decision was "appetizer". We wanted Guac, but Juan suggested the Pork Belly Chicharrón version which includes pork belly bites. Scrumptious and almost a meal in itself (all portions are generous.) Next to the cocktail menu. Unlike many Mexican restaurants Vochos does not have a large selection of various Tequilas. It creates memorable drinks with a limited selection of liquours, including Mezcal. I am a boubon drinker and enjoy an Old Fashioned. Their "smoked" version using smoky Mezcal was a delight...and unique to me. Pat enjoyed the "El Diablo", their excellent version of the Rita. On to the main: I told Juan my decision was between the paella or the Chamorro Pibil slow cooked pork shank. He suggested the Chamorro which was fabulous (and generous enough for three meals.) Pat's choice was the Adobo Salmon with plantain cake. She raved about the plantains. We wrapped with Choco Flan de Cafe "impossible espresso coffee cake" flan. It was "big" and better than any flan we have enjoyed. The décor is upscale, a clear cut above any we have seen in other Mexican restaurants, including those in Northern Virgina/DC. As I noted earlier, the price point is somewhat higher than regular Mexican restaurants. But the value is clearly there, and Vochos has no real competition. We highly recommend it as a unique experience for the Wilmington market. We're going back next week. read more

This is a great upscale and modern Mexican restaurant. The interior of the restaurant looks great and styled well. The music was modern Latin and not too loud. The selection of craft cocktails is good and the food is delicious. We were there for lunch and I had the enchiladas with mole sauce and my spouse had the Wagu burger with these amazing fries that had a rosemary salt dust. Our server was great too. Maybe we were just there on an off night? Service was.... Awkward. The food was lack-luster. They do a lot for "show" but not for quality. We ordered the charred bone marrow....The octopus it came with was improperly cooked (rubbery and fishy). Really turned me off of the whole dish....I took it to go to use as fish bait cause I didn't want it to go to waste. We also had the rib eye chicharron guac. The rib eye was tough and chewy- and bland. I'm glad my husband and I ordered one thing at a time bc we couldn't get out of there fast enough. When we asked for a box the waitress came out with gloves and a whole tray of things to box our food up table side. It was a long (almost humorous) process and we ended up just asking to box it up ourselves because it felt.... Just weird. I don't know if it was the owner or the manager who came in while we were there? But he seemed to make his staff uncomfortable. It was such a strange experience. Will never go back. What a bummer! This was our first time here and we were impressed with the food, service and clean and upscale appearance. We are from Jacksonville and came to Wilmington to eat at the beach but the traffic was horrible so we were heading back and saw this place and decided to try. SO glad we did. We had dinner here and it was terrible. There were only 2 tables occupied at peak dinner time so that should've been our sign. We ordered Pork Belly Chicharron. The 'pork belly' was cooked well but tasted like hotdogs...ewww. We then ordered Peruvian Leche de Tigre and it was underwhelming. The calamari served with it was chewy and they served the body of a small squid. We did not try anything else after that. This was our second time in the restaurant and both times were not good. We will not be going there again. Disappointing considering their previous restaurant was so good. Seems like they're trying to be high end without the formal training. Try a deconstructed, delicious burrito instead of swinging for a James Beard award with this Asian fusion menu. read more

We went to Vochos to try it out after reading a number of very positive reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was not one of them! First, it looks like a large amount of $ was spent on decor. Nice bar a large dining area everything bright and comfortable. Our server was really nice, but had a tendency to disappear between drink and food orders, not great for a place featuring primarily tapas offerings. The drink menu features a list of "crafted " cocktails (Margaritas NOTon the list!), all in the $18 -$20 range. Order a cervesa! The most disappointing part of the evening was the food. Each table gets a few cornbread muffins that tasted reliably not produced on site. We shared 3 of the tapas plates that were most recommended. The Birria Bao buns disappointed due to the ratio of bun to braised beef. Also, there was only a hint of acid on each and no herb (cilantro). Very bready and not much else. The tuna tostada (raw) on guacamole tostada was very good. The Rajas con queso ( 4 cheeses) with chorizo (added) was hopelessly bad. We sent it back to be melted since it came out barely cooked. Even after being run through a boiler, it still was a gloppy tasteless affair. Our server at her insistence took it of the tab. Other complaint was the chips were the the commercially bagged ones served at every low end joint , and the flour tortillas same. Inexcusable for what is promoted as higher level dining . Price point (high) did not reflect the dining experience. NOTE:This is the first negative review of any restaurant that I have written since Covid. I believe that the industry had enough issues just hanging in there. read more

Terrible food, ambience and concept. Forget give them time, it has been under renovation for close to a year. The food is terrible, flavor , portions, price and quality all terrible. Ambience, the exterior and will trick you into thinking you are at a reasonably priced authentic place. You're in a mall parking lot next to a paint store, gas station and pet supply store. The creators of this place must have watched a travel special on Tulum MX for the decor and music inspiration. Inside they really think they are great everything from the hostess asking for last name and telephone number just to be seated to the table setting. None of it makes sense. The server we had was a nice guy who was either trained at Ruth Chris's or way over trained for this place. I've already texted everyone in my contacts that have mentioned this place while it was being converted from Ruby Tuesdays to let them know it's awful. I'm guessing it will be open for less than 6 months. Looking forward to the Rainforest Cafe or Planet Hollywood, they would be a better compliment to the indoor skydiving and Dave and Busters. read more
