i had just come back from belgium and was missing my time there already. as soon as my partner and arrived we smelled cigarette smoke and heard french at the outdoor area of the bar. it was a promising entry. we were specifically looking for gruit actually- just something i've wanted to try since learning about this old brewing method when i was in belgium. they didnt have any gruit beers. they actually hadnt heard of it lol. we got a glass of duvel green and the nightshade. both were good and as described. the duvel green was lighter with a foamy head and the nightshade was bitter as to be expected from darker beers. this is a pretty big space for a bar in nyc. there were some people playing chess in the indoor area and the outdoor area was quite big as well, like a patio. the interior had red lighting which was interesting and the wall along the bar area had beer glasses designed for Belgian beers. that made it feel all the more authentic! i would definitely come back read more

Quality: I loved the approach Vol De Nuit took towards its menu. They only serve iconic and delicious old-world beers, and make sure each one is poured as it is meant to be. I enjoyed a Delirium Tremens, as well as sips of a LaChouffe and a Saison Dupont during the visit. The Small Frites with some Aioli Garlic was a perfect compliment to the beers. Quantity: Pours are dictated by the specific glass for each beer. Value: $8-11 for Draft Beer. $6 for Small Frites. Ambiance: Vol De Nuit is a beer bar located in Greenwich Village. The entrance has you walk through a small passageway and into a patio. The patio has a fair amount of seating. Venture further to get into a darkened indoor space, which utilizes neon red lighting. The bar area is small and highlights all the old-world beer available. The many corners inside all offer seating with a level of privacy. The space has a very intimate and European feel. Lovely little hidden nook, that I can only hope I continue to find when in the Soho area, over and over again. It's a bit offset from the street/sidewalk, but a business associate assured me it would definitely please the foodie, beer/wine pallete of mine...and boy were they right. From the cozy feel of grabbing a seat at the bar, to a wonderful selection of IPAs listed on boards overhead, to neatly, clean handles to draw the golden pour. I opted to give the La Chouffe a try and it hit the spot, so much so I snag another to go along with a small fries with garlic aoili dipping sauce on the side. All were great happy hour snacks after a long work day. Can't wait to go back and try a bit more of their menu. Bartender was super sweet and attentive, cleaning glassware prior to each pour and making sure that any excess foam was rid of before served. Every time I give a bar/lounge a subpar review, I always preface with...maybe it was an "off" night. Let's hope so. We were looking for a bar to get a drink before a comedy show in the surrounding area, and Vol de Nuit popped up as a beer-centric and cool place to kick it. My boyfriend and I walked over and immediately liked the entrance. It reminds me of those small towns in Italy with their cobblestone floors, where some customers sat (outdoors) chatting in privacy. We walked indoors and the famous "red lights" made the ambiance feel very intimate and warm--so far all great signs! The old school wood and older walls could use an update, but that's the vibe of the place. The beertenders that night weren't very friendly or responsive. We looked up at the beers on tap that are handwritten up above the bar, and were sad to see that they really weren't a "beer bar." There were only 5-6 selections on tap, with options like Blue Moon, Chimay, and Delirium. I could find any of those at my local dive bar, but I thought Vol de Nuit was different. Apparently not. That's fine, we went with two beers on tap which came out too foamy and a bit colder than lukewarm. There were zero sweat drops on our glasses even when we sat down. I guess that was the beer snob in me, but I expected more from a "NYC favorite" according to other reviews. Plus, the two ladies did not seem like they wanted to be there (on a Wednesday night) which was a shame. A light smile or a "you're welcome" would be enough. Unfortunately i don't get to hang out with my friend Corrie that often, but when it happens it is usually at a place I like. Tonight she picks Vol de Nuit, which is one of my favorite places in the city. Awesome, awesome way to spend a Thursday night! The place is pretty packed, a bit more than I would have expected/liked for a Thursday night. It's ok, since we manage to score two seats at the communal table at the back, right in front of the bar. Palm on draft is a nice, recent addition to Vol de Nuit's beer menu. Unfortunately they were out of it tonight. Ok, I haven't had Leffe Blond in a while, that will do. For the second round I feel like a Corsendonk[1]. Unfortunately they're out of this one too. I get a Leffe Brown instead. you could do a lot worse than a Leffe Blond and a Leffe Brown. Still, being out of two out of two of the beers that I wanted to order, that is not going to impress me. On the way out there's a group of people by the door, one guy is blocking the door with his chair. "Excuse me..." "EXCUSE MEEEE...." Finally the guy notices Corrie, apologizes and moves over. "I am sorry, my friend is a bit of an asshole" says one of the guys in the group, jokingly. "I know", I reply jokingly. "Fuck you guys", says the "asshole" friend. I've always enjoyed this bar. It really is a great place to go solo and have drink in the courtyard or inside at the bar. I went recently and was a bit peeved. I ordered a beer that was $8. the bar tender charged my $9. Didn't let it bother me. Maybe the menu was outdated. Second beer- same thing, but a different beer. I asked why they were charging me (cash) an extra $1. They replied tax. I said, huh that sounds like an oddly square, disproportionate percentage (not to mention fraudulent statement.) What can I say, I love bars. I've never experienced this anywhere. If a beer is $8 and you're paying cash, it's $8. Super shady and lame. read more

This place is nostalgic for me... been coming here since college days at NYU - 10+ years. The great thing about it - atmosphere and drinks\food are always awesome. The bad thing - it's popular and can get packed pretty fast. Why I love Vol de Nuit - this is a great place to get with friends, have some beers and chill. The beer selection is excellent and they do a great job with Belgian classic - Leffe or Chimay is my usual go to beer. They use proper glasses for different beers. With few Chimay Rouge glasses - you will get happy :) The food is also great (granted there is just 2 food items). Fries are well executed and come with multiple sauces (like done in Belgium) - classic Mayo and Ketchup are both good simple choices. Mussels are excellent and usually what I order with beer. Prepared in a nice hot pot, mussels infuse the flavors of stock and taste delicious. My only complaint - sometimes they don't have food (run out of mussels early in the evening). In those cases - I can usually bring food from outside (there is a pierogi\pelmeni cart on 6th ave around the corner). Been here a hundred times and will be here a hundred more (although at some point I may look out of place and old compared to all the NYU kids here) read more

Dimly lit bar in the Village with an average beer selection. Great for a date night, music isn't loud at all so you can actually have a conversation. They lost my credit card here, I think they gave it to the wrong person. After leaving it at the bar the night prior, I come back the next day. They spend 10 minutes looking for the card - it was evident they recall seeing it at some point - but told me they couldn't find it. They then printed me a receipt with an auto-charge tip. This is standard if you leave your card behind at a bar... but, they fully admitted to losing my credit card. I was a bit shocked that they thought this was in any way acceptable. After complaining they removed the entire charge, which I appreciated. However, there was no apology for losing my card. read more

Vol de Nuit is a hidden Belgian bar in the West Village. It's got that dim, red lighting that most other NYC Belgian bars have. It's also got the pricey drinks. But with this price tag, you do get quality Belgian beers. You also get the comfort of a seat and no crowds, which is hard to come by at bars in this neighborhood. It wasn't packed for a Friday night, but I imagine it's because a majority of the population frequenting the bars in this area are broke NYU students looking for Off the Wagon type places. Belgian bar is one of the best bars by NYU. I say Belgian bar, because until I saw this listing I had no idea what its real name was; that's what everyone I've ever spoken to has called it. You go in on there's an outdoor area with seating and a bar that's closed unless they're packed, and then there's a dark, indoors area with more seating and a full bar. All the beer is from Belgium or is Belgiam-style, as you could expect: Hoegaarden, Chimay, Lindeman's, etc. Some of the beers are fairly common in the city now a days, some are more rare. Between the tap and their bottle selection, if you're a beer enthusiast you should be satisfied. Prices are good considering that these beers are much stronger in alcohol content than normal beers--and more satifying. I've their frites a few times which are good for bar food; I wouldn't try anything else. Service is good at the bar, less so if you're at a table outside. This place definitely has that cool "craft" bar vibe to it if that's what you're looking for. I've had some great times here in college just hanging out, and it says something that I continue to come back when I'm in the area. Good beer + relaxed atmosphere = win. read more

I've been going to Vol de Nuit for years and still really enjoy stopping by when I'm in the neighborhood. My friends and I typically saddle up to the bar once we're inside. I STILL don't understand the point of the "atrium" random outdoor area at the entryway, though, if I do remember correctly, the building beside it used to be an outpost of the main bar -- so I think it used to serve the purpose of a communal space. Either way, there's ZERO ambiance to it, so I highly recommend just going inside. That being said, I prefer to come here in the winter, since the atmosphere is dark and cozy. Beer selection on draft is impressive and there's always something there that I want to order. Prices are pretty typical for the beer type (high-end, high alcohol Belgian beers), and they always serve in the proper glasses. Bartenders aren't always responsive, but they get the job done. One major pitfall is the fact that they stop serving their infamous (and amazing) pommes frites by 10pm. BOO. When coming here at the end of the evening, I want my greasy, horribly unhealthy frites, goshdarnit! And I know I'm not alone. When I expressed my extreme disappointment to the unsympathetic bartender, I heard two other groups of people ask him the same exact question and were similarly disappointed. One other downside would be the bathrooms. One bathroom does not a good bar make. The line can sometimes get crazy stupid long here. read more

Vol de Nuit is one of those bars that if you walk in with your backpack right off the Wide Eyed Express to Penn Station when you're 22, for your first drink as a citizen of New York City, it will probably hold a special place in your heart. I know that for me, it was a haven for good beer at a time when you couldn't just walk into any mediocre bar in the city and order a world-class Belgian ale--a feat that, these days, seems more and more banal. I don't think you have to be an NYU grad student to enjoy it, but I do think that's when VdN will leave the deepest dent in your memory. More the a decade later, this dark bar still holds up and is somewhat of a throwback, serving the same fine Belgian ales and tasty fries it did 15 years ago. Girls still giggle in dark corners, recounting their weekend exploits, and groups still huddle at that big table just off the entrance, enjoying the halcyon days of youth. You can't smoke indoors anymore, but it still feels like it can. And, best of all, it's still just hard enough to find to keep it from being overrun by objectionable types. To the steadfast Village institutions like Vol de Nuit and Old Rabbit Club, I salute you. read more

During the few times i come to NYC each year I always make a point to visit this place nightly. When it comes to Belgian beers, I've not had a purer spot to taste more on tap than Vol de Nuit. It is pure because this spot is all about the beer. I reckon there's dozens of draft beers available. Its inner layout is also conducive to meeting friends. It's fairly small, often congested, with a few tables and an open patio add a lil more space (for smoking mostly). I usually eat something before visiting - you really have to. The high alcohol content of belgian beer will dispose of you quickly if there is nothing else in your stomach. So drop in and try the "Houblan Chouffe" blond ale on tap. It's perhaps the best beer ever. Just stop at 2 or 3 glasses. Warning: more than 3 and your night could become a blur! ;D read more

3.5 stars. Years ago, this was the first Belgian Beer Bar that I'd ever been to (or heard of, for that matter). I was brought by a friend, a Belgian, no less, and I was smitten. The grunge, red lights, the way it's hidden behind a little alley, has a little courtyard, frites, and some of the most famous Belgian beers, were all a big turn on for me. That being said, now I'm old and have been around the world, and to Belgian beer bars far and wide. Vol de Nuit (just called "The Belgian Beer Bar" by everyone I know...) just has the most famous of the beers (albeit, famous for a reason), nothing crazy or terribly difficult to find. But perhaps that's because Vol de Nuit has been there all along, and what was exotic and extraordinary has now become more well-known in the US after years and years. I presume Vol de Nuit had something to do with that. I don't know how long it's been there, but it seems like a while... There's definitely no fancy-schmancy snobbery here. Belgian beer rocks.
