Definitely a dark pocket of this part of town - but I really like it. You feel like you've happened upon a chill and hidden bar. It's perhaps the divey-ish Belgian bar I've been to in the city. Great Belgian beer selection, of course. The bartender was no frills but definitely was able to pick out the best beer for me given my interests. Plenty of seating. The coveted five star rating is being granted to Vol de Nuit because of the unmatched selection of Belgian brews. To those non beer drinkers (I, being a former one until last year), this is one establishment that has the potential to change your view. It's a Belgian beer sampler's delight with many taps and bottled selections from which to choose. On a warm summer afternoon, the backdrop of W 4th street bball/handball courts was a complete contrast to the Belgique beer feast going on just behind the brick wall. Try the Lindemans Franbois, you'll never expect beer to taste like this with its fruity essence of raspberries that give the beer a totally unique taste and composition! Move on to the Maredsous, with subdle flavors of coffee and chocolate that you can even smell! Then try the Chimay blue that's smooth, spicy without a heaviness typical of many beers. Save the best for last...Delirium Tremens. If you like Stella, I think you'd LOVE DT. It's a light bodied, clean finished beer with hints of spices and dried fruits...almost a raisiny taste. It is really hard to describe, but I would certainly recommend you trying it. Finally, the wait staff were very friendly, and surprisingly, when I asked our waiter what he knew about Belgium, he replied that he lived there at some point in his lifetime.....and since I am going there in a few months...he was not at all, resistant in asking where we were staying and confirmed that it was a good choice location wise...and we would really enjoy ourselves...but just be ready for the classic Belgium past time...eating and drinking. He also confirmed that a trip to Bruges and Antwerp were worth the time and money. Finally, they serve food....classic Belgium frites and mussels. Vol de Nuit is a Belgian beer bar that's a little bit on the divey side. It's easy to miss as the entrance is pretty nondescript. Look for the wooden sign shaped like a coat of arms or a shield. You walk in, and you're still outside, but keep walking and you get to the inside area (reminds me of Mission Dolores bar in Brooklyn). There's a long communal table as well as some high tops. There's table service, but it's best to just go up to the bar. Bartender is soft-spoken, but he'll have a cure for what ails you (sobriety). Good amount of beers on tap and in bottles (though no prices on the menu). I went with their house saison, which was as refreshing as I expected. Of course, they also have Delirium Tremens, which has been the cause of many a rough morning, as well as La Chouffe. Several Duvel's and Chimay's as well. Definitely worth stopping in for a lowkey drink, though it can get loud. read more

Such a random gem in the middle of the mess that is NYU west village! After walking through the tunnel entry way, you enter an open European-type patio / courtyard littered with plastic chairs and tables. As you continue inside, you enter this airy loft with exposed brick walls, furnished with random victorian plush sofas and red light bulbs. I felt like I found a secret passageway to the Carroll Gardens in BK or something. I came on a Friday night around 11pm and it was not that crowded, we easily snagged a table for our group of 10 people. The Belgian beers were delicious and the ambiance was very chill and relaxed- well, except for the blasting techno music. That I could have done without but I suppose it wouldn't really have the Euro feel without the trance rave music. Despite the music, I'd definitely come back! read more

This definitely should not be labeled a lounge. I don't know how to describe this bar, but my best attempt is a mix of an Irish Pub and a German Beer Garden. They serve beer and wine, but honestly, I don't think they serve wine. You can say red wine or white wine, they won't ask what kind, so they're really just "appeasing" to the masses by offering overpriced, low quality, undrinkable wine. Ok, fine, I'll let you slide, you're a beer place. Well then, please do it right. My Hoegarden was not served with a lemon and it became room temperature in minutes. Flattering lighting, a pseudo-rustic wooden interior, an outdoor area where you can get away from the noise on a crowded night, splendid beers including my favorites leffe blonde and delerium tremens at mid-range prices in very nifty glasses. The staff is friendly, classy, and stylish. The patrons seem to be all of these things as well, although that may be due mostly to the flattering lighting. The fact that places like the Belgian Beer Bar are only open to people of legal drinking age is perhaps the sole reason why it is worth giving up the joys of childhood. read more

I was expecting a bit more out of Vol de Nuit. The frites... sounded better than they really were. Honestly -- absolutely nothing special about them, and with all the delicious beers they have on tap or bottle.. you're better of just sticking to them. Kwak served in the kwak style glass - awesome. Corsendonk served in Corsendonk glass - awesome Orval (botttle) - in they type of glass its supposed to be servied - not good -- and very surprising as it's rated 100/100 on Beer Advocate If you're in the mood for Belgian beer, especially on tap... then head to Vol de Nuit. The ambiance of Vol de Nuit... at least to me is non-existent. A bit.. "too divey" for me in all honesty. If you wanna just come enjoy some great beer before dinner, then it's a great spot, but more of an in & out type of place. read more

The staff is knowledgable and can offer many suggestions. The bar is beer and wine only, with obvious emphasis on the beer. The wine is incredibly limited and not what I would ever drink otherwise, but for a place that specialized in beer, it was good. For wine, the Pinot Noir is the best option. For beer, there are many selections depending on what you like. The atmosphere is like a divey pub. It's a place you can hang out in groups with friends. While it is casual, it is pretty quiet, much more so than I expected from a beer bar which is a plus. On the bad side, it is so dark in here to the point where you can't even read the menu. read more

If you want a place to get Belgian beer, this is your spot. The menu isn't huge and the place is dimly-lit but it's very appealing. There is a small bar and they also have table service. We went with a large order of fries (so good) and a few beers. The service was fast and very friendly. They also have a large outdoor area in the front, which seems like the perfect place to hang out during the summer. Came here for DINNER AND BEER with my boyfriend. When I sat down, ordered, they only had frites. Where the bleep are the mussels?????? I was very disappointed. We ordered a medium size Frite. It was 7pm, and a waitress came over and said that she charged us for a small because it was the last of the batch, wasn't close to a medium. I thought this was DISGUSTING. We didn't even have strips of fries. It was the cold ends. We shouldn't have even paid for this. Very hot inside and outside. A lot of flies inside and outside (can't be a good sign). I decided to order a beer out of my comfort zone. It tasted like an EMERGEN-C packet you pick up in a pharmacy. We asked to close out, and added a drink to have the check with the beer. My partners wallet was stolen from this place a few weeks ago when a homeless man walked up to our table and swiped in. Cameras couldn't see it and the manager was insanely unhelpful. Prior to this, the manager (also our server) explained to me how food works. We asked for aioli which he wouldn't provide even though they had it. We offered to pay for it and still he wouldn't let us order it for dishes not having it already. I asked him about the beer selection and he stared at me with a look of contempt. Then immediately pushed me to order, so I had a glass of red. A little annoyance? Fine. Not everyone was born with a winning personality. However, when my partners wallet was stolen and he was hardly helpful? Ignoring my concerns along with those brought to the conversation from other tables? Unacceptable. No security at the door and was unfazed this happened. We won't be visiting again. Wasn't a fan before or after our night took a turn. For some reason, this place induces a strong nostalgia in me. Maybe it's the soft red lights or the warm summer air-- somehow, it almost feels like being on the front porch of a Texas ice house. Feels like a locals-only spot without being too divey. Beers aren't cheap here, but they are Belgian and not an insane markup. I had a Lindeman's Framboise for $9, and bottles of that (maybe double the size) are usually $12. Order at the bar and take it outside. Snagging a table at 9:30 pm on a Saturday was no problem, although it was decently populated, mostly with a mid-twenties and older crowd. Great place to escape the sometimes fratty atmosphere of Greenwich. Overall, a very pleasant place for a beer, with a unique patio situation. read more

One of the spots I would visit again if I were to come back to NYC. For everyone whose been to/experienced Downtown LA it reminded me a lot of Wurstkuche, some sausage place in with a bunch of Belgian beers and good fries... except this place is much better. The ambiance and atmosphere is great. The wooden tables and the red lighting just make this place look so grungy. We ordered some food and I asked for a light, refreshing beer. The guy gave me something good and the mussels and fries were freaking amazing. They came in a giant bucket which 4 of us shared, and it took us a while to finish even though we were devouring them. So go here and enjoy some beer and food with your friends. The entrance doesn't look like much but walk in and you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

After 3 or 4 Delirium Tremens it hits you.... you need food. No need to wander outside just order the mussels and fries. Not the normal afterthought bar food, the mussels here are fantastic. Nice meaty mussels and a delicious garlic (?) broth, it's a perfect accompaniment to fine Belgian beers. While I polished it off myself, it could be shared by two people with normal appetites. Vol de Nuit was actually the first bar I went to when I first moved to Manhattan 5 years ago. After my first visit, I kept thinking "Wow, I really hope all bars in NYC are like this." Unfortunately, Vol de Nuit set a very high expectation that would not be met by many of the bars in this city. The place can be a little hard to find, but once you see the crest at the top of the doorway, just make your way in. The chill vibe and divey atmosphere is something very hard to find in the West Village. What's even more difficult is finding a place that always has a decent amount of people but never feels "crowded." Vol de Nuit manages to achieve this time and time again during every visit. There's usually seating available, and it's never shoulder-to-shoulder near the bar. Such excellence should not be taken for granted. They have an outdoor and indoor space, which is great for those summer nights. You might not want to bring a huge group here, but you can always try your luck. Best party size would probably be 4-6. Prices are a bit higher than you might expect for a divey place, but they have a decent selection of beers and the service is always pretty attentive, but not in your face. I haven't tried the pomme frites or any of the food in that matter, but whenever they bring out the dishes, it always looks really good. So, yeah, I really do have to try it one of these nights. Overall, definitely a great place for low-key nights. Note: they don't have liquor, but they do have Belgian beer. So that's good. read more

"Did you just say you don't like FRIES?" I get the appeal of this place. It has a pretty decent selection of taps and bottles. They serve fries. With beer. They're hidden and all, and yet have a (sort of) outside patio. The whole place is bathed in this strange reddish tinge of light, if you're into that (for some weird reason). Overall, it's a perfectly acceptable bar. I've had plenty of good times here with friends, and sometimes it's an easy option on a weeknight, but given a choice I'd go for the tiny 124 Rabbit Club anyday. And if they won't let me in, I'd stumble into Vol De Nuit for some of that bottle of St. Bernadus 12 or the Lambic on tap. read more

Word of mouth travels far and wide, and sometimes it picks up so much momentum and speed that you just 'Have to Try It!' I'm not naming names however; I won't shy away from using air quotes... "You gotta try Vol de nuit, some of the best fries around." "How have you not tried vol de nuit yet!" Ok, whomever said that the frites here are great must have been drunk, hammered, twisted, or dunzo! And, when they wrote their review, maybe they were smashed, plastered, or totally shit-faced. Perhaps, said person even woke up totally naked, lying in a dark alley next to a transvestite, but I digress.. The frites (here-forth-to referred to as fries) here are passable. I should've retracted my wallet after I discovered that they only serve two dishes here, (1) mussels (2) fries. But, dammit, they offer their fries with garlic aioli. I'm such a sucker for garlic (I think it's love). It's a mixture of average sized fries, and itty-bitty bits of fried potato, some fried well, and some over-fried. At times, I felt like I was just throwing scoops of potato crumbs into my mouth. I hate it when places serve up such unevenly sized fries. I've had better fries from other bars. And, I've tasted better garlic aioli before. Two stars for the fries. The venue is however, very nice & cozy. You walk through a small underpass that opens up into a patio area that's great to situate during a cool breezy night. Or, on a hot n' humid day, step into the bar for some strong ac and some of the best german drafts available. Four stars for the venue. Average out to three stars. AS THE YELP TURNS, Episode 1: It was getting to be that time. The time to leave and go deal with my responsibilities. But I was having fun. We were having fun, my new friend and me. Who would have thought that a stranger and I would still have interesting things to talk about after already spending two hours sitting in the park discussing various old Seinfeld episodes and the age old question of what actually makes a cookie, a good cookie? Something made me want to linger, and lingering further meant I'd have to find someplace soon that served food as well. I wasn't going to make it through the night (much less the next ten minutes) without eating something. Breaking all self-imposed female dietary restrictions, I led us a block away to the Belgian beer and pommes frites of Vol de Nuit. I hadn't been there in awhile, but it hadn't changed much. Time had been kind to Vol de Nuit (not so kind to the restroom though, but oh well, you can't have everything) and my new friend loved it. He had the Chimay and I had the Leffe Blond. Fries were ordered and consumed. Devoured, is more like it. And even though at one point I got so wrapped up in describing a point so passionately that I forgot what the point I was trying to originally make was, he seemed to be just as entertained & intrigued with what I had to say. I could see it in his eyes. It was nice. But then, the train! I had to leave--immediately, I was already late, what was I doing staying this long? What was I thinking? I'm never late when it's time for responsibilities. What was wrong with me? Before I could even finish my beer and with an embarrassed smile, I said goodbye, apologizing for my fast exit. It was okay, he said. He got the check. A quick hug and I was gone. I made it to Penn Station in record time, but my thoughts were still lingering...it'd be nice to see this Mr. X again before he leaves town tomorrow. Nothing ventured, nothing gained--so I let him know via text that I'd be around later if he was still up for hanging out after his swanky dinner, and then... Seeing as how this is the top rated nightlife spot on Yelp, it was only a matter of time before I got here. There were a few things keeping me from it, though. First, I'm not a beer person, so I don't tend to seek out places known for their beer selection. Second, this seems more like a place you stumble into rather than a destination (all evidence to the contrary, I realize), so since I dont' live down here, I rarely get the chance to stumble into it, but last night, after realizing that this place is literally two doors down from one of my best friend's apartments, we stopped in for a drink. All of what you've read is true - it's cozy and red inside with a lovely and interesting selection of Beligian beers. I also imagine this is what a bar in Belgium is actually like - not that I've ever been. We did have a little trouble reading the menu (a common problem I'm sure), but it's a great cozy place to stop in for a beer. When I have any beer-o-phile friends in town (that's not likely to happen any time soon), I will take them here to show them I know where to get good beer, and they will smile upon my wisdom and grace for their inferior tastes in alcohol. ;) read more

I had an unofficial Yelp event here last night. When I contacted the staff last week, they were very accommodating of my request to have a table reserved off for about 15 attendees. I arrived early yesterday to be sure I could secure the table, but there was no worry in that as there was a sign already in place on the table when I arrived indicating that it was reserved. Our bartender, Suzanne, was just incredible. She had a wonderful, outgoing personality and truly aimed to make sure that all of our needs were met -- just perfect. I highly recommend this place as a venue for small to medium-sized parties. And you can never miss with the wonderful selection of Belgian beers. read more

Atmosphere reigns supreme at this mecca for Belgian beer. You slip past an unmarked monastery-style overhang on West 4th and into a quiet courtyard. Through the door to Vol de Nuit, you're greeted by a pervasive darkness pierced with dozens of flickering candles. The beer list is exclusively Belgian, with hard to find (and harder to pronounce) brews ranging from Lindemann's venerable fruit-based lambics to abbey ales like Corsendonk, Chimay, and La Chouffe. They even have familiars like Stella Artois and Hoegaarden thrown in for good measure. The devotion to Belgian beer and the atmosphere do not come cheap: the average glass is $8 and bottles run much more. Just took a friend here last night who was in town from Buenos Aires for just the night and he was like... this is great, its just like my favorite bar back home. Always a good place to show the visitors to the city because its sneaky and cool and lets face it... Its so low key and great that they will enjoy resting their tired feet as they sit at the comfy leather sofa and you will love it just as much as you will enjoy not getting bumped and shoved like a piece of meat at most other places. Yes new yorkers need a little refuge and this place serves it. It also serves yummy belgian fries but get them early as they stop serving munchies after 11pm, So yeah I never get to eat the fries here sadly. On to the Belgian Beers!!! Who doesn't love beer brewed by trappist monks? No one. They have devoted their lives to god, and making a fine brew. props trappist monks. props. Also I am a Leffe kinda girl. blondes, browns... I dont discrimate they are all unique, complex and flavorful and sure to hit the spot. For a good time read the tastefully written, nobel laureate quality beer descriptions aloud to the group in a sultry sexy voice while playing with said friend/victim beside you's hair. Example: "..... Leffe Blonde has a clear, golden body with a thick, dense and rocky head. It's nose is fully of bananas and sweet spice. The mouthfeel is silky and the beer sweet. It tastes much as it smells - like liquid banana bread and a nice snap at the back. A lingering sweetness becomes almost cloying..." wowza... and that children is why I Love this place. read more

As soon as I walked through the little corridor and entered a small outdoor patio that was sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the Village, I realized that I had been here before. Vol de Nuit was my first introduction to the real New York. Not the cheap tacky New York of tourists and garish lights, but the New York that New Yorkers live. It's a NY that magically disappears in the craziness of bright lights and lost lives. About five years ago, it was the first time I actually knew someone living in the city. She met me at the stop and led me to Vol de Nuit. I marveled at how by a few feet we were hidden from the crowded sidewalks. Nonchalantly she answered, "There are lots of places like these." I had forgotten the name, but not the place. I fondly recognized Vol de Nuit like an old friend with whom I had lost touch and serendipitously ran into on the street. After a few minutes wait, we scored a cozy table for two by a corner. I'm rather fond of lambics and Vol de Nuit has all of the different Lindemann flavors. I tasted Kriek and it was too sweet. It unfortunately reminded me more of the cherry flavored cough syrup that I had as a kid. So far, I still think Peche (peach) is the best flavor, followed by Framboise (raspberry). We wanted mussels, but they had already ran out by 8 pm. We made do with the fries, which were delicious. Nothing like an indulgent night of beer and fries. Vol de Nuit is a nice casual hang out spot for couples and friends. I saw girls chatting with their girlfriends, friends catching up on their lives, men stopping in for a drink or two after work, and couples on dates. There's a relaxed, casual, and slightly rough feel about Vol de Nuit. I can definitely recommend this for a casual first getting-to-know-you date. Or if you're single and looking for eye candy. If you're there with someone you really like, then you won't notice anything else at Vol de Nuit. read more

Oh the "Belgian Beer Bar". One of the first places I ever went out in New York when I started college (man, I'm getting old). The honeymoon is over-- I've gotten tired of the francophiles and Beckett-toting film kids that seem to love this place; the ownership changed sometime in '04 and service kind of sucks now-- but the beer always delivers. It's like an ex-girlfriend you hook up with every once in a while for old time's sake, minus the annoying phone calls the next morning. Go, just don't expect to be amazed. read more

Whenever my friends say that they don't like beer (especially females), I bring them here. I start them off on a light-as-white-wine Hoegaarden, trick them into the raspberry koolaid-like Framboise, then finish them off with a Chimay Triple. By the end of the night, I'm guaranteed to have converted another to the dark side...of ale, that is. Pros: ~The second bar. In the summer, the smaller front bar is open, which is amazing if you're a drunken klutz like me and don't want to walk up the three stairs for the bigger bar, lest you break your face. ~Laid back atmosphere. No drama, no fighting, just warm red lights, pulsing downbeat music, and rickety old benches and couches to perch on. The clientele is always comprised of unpretentious mid-late twenties types, making VdN one of my favorite places; after work, during a 'big night out,' on a first date, catching up with a friend, whatever...Oh, and how can you not love the semi-hidden entryway? ~Outside. Call it what you want; "the patio," "the courtyard," "the entrance". But there's nothing I love more than sitting outside (weather permitting,) sharing a smoke and conversing over my beer. Cons: ~One bathroom. One smelly, singular, graffiti-marked water closet...and the line is always insane. Everyone should use hand sanitizer or at least dip their hands in beer to inhibit the spread of MRSA, which you might catch from this bathroom. (And girls, make sure you've got tissues in your purse, because depending on the time of night you go, they may be out of TP.) ~The kitchen closes at 10 (or is it ll?) Truthfully, unless I've got a death wish, I'm not up for eating steamed muscles (or any type of seafood) beyond 9pm. But it kinda makes me sad, because nothing says loving like late night pomme frites and beer. Vol de Nuit is unique in its way where it is labeled as a Belgium Beer Bar. This spot is great for Belgium beer enthusiasts as there are many selections of drafts and bottles to choose from. The bar itself is dark and intimate with great service and attention. The brick entry kinda hides the bar itself so watch out for its sign! You have about a good 2 handfuls of tables in the back side and an outdoor patio also for those hot days. Surprisingly, I can imagine this place as a good date spot for those beer lovers also. Their food selection sounded great with the mussels but maybe next time as I was too full from my cheesesteak sandwich that night. We tried to Chimay, Leffe Brown and Triple karmeliet. Went here on a Friday night for some Belgian beer. I was not disappointed. I haven't had a Lindeman's framboise in years, and it was nice to reunite again with this semi-sweet, semi-tart, beautifully-red tap beer. The thing is though, my taste buds have changed, and now its a bit too sweet for me. It was nice to consort with a long lost lover though ;) My second was a Palm Ale and that hit the spot. Amber and light, just what I like. My BF had a Chimay and it was a bit too much alcohol; he then tried a Leffe Brown and liked it. I was curious about the frites, but had already eaten! Maybe next time... BTW, the waitresses are cute, so it was a nice view ;) The ambiance was nice, with Middle Eastern/Indian/Gypsy type music, loud but still bearable. I came here for the first time yesterday (Wednesday night) with a new friend. She suggested this place and boasted about their awesome atmosphere and the great selection of drinks. She definitely sold me with the outdoor seating because, God knows, I LOVE to smoke my cigs when I have a little alcohol. Walking in, it's very dim and kind of feels like a little artsy, secret place but it's so cool and chill. We of course sat outside and our waitress, who was super friendly and definitely did not have that NY attitude....I think she was from Wyoming of all places haha, took our orders and got us our drinks right away. I actually have no idea what my drink was, my friend ordered us both this Belgian beer served in these big round glasses. It definitely was the best tasting beer I've ever had....and I HATE beer! So thumbs up for that! I wondered inside to check out the digs, it was very dark and filled with chill groups of people having quiet and mature conversations....definitely a change from the bars surrounding this one filled with stupid frat boys and loud people and sluts who are all over said frat boys. I think this bar definitely belongs somewhere cooler than W4th Street, but I like how it gives people a break from the crazy, college-y bars surrounding it. I don't know how this place is on a weekend, but I'd definitely keep coming back here on a weekday after work or to catch up with an old (or new) friend. It's super chill, very great if you want a break from the real world for an hour or two. read more
