The room was lovely, the town fun to stroll around, the food tasty, the autumn tinged trees picturesque, and the prices good. Luckily, she hopped back in the car the next day and came home with me... I'm guessing it's because I had the kids strapped in the car seats as I revved the engine. Okay, I am diverging into a 'Volcan the town' review, but the Union Inn made it happen for us. My son, niece and I stumbled into this hidden treasure. The atmosphere was lovely they had both indoor and outdoor seating. The food was done thoughtfully and the presentation was superb. I highly recommend the mushroom toast as the richness still lingers in my mind. Our waitress was completely accommodating and pleasant I even left my credit card by accident and called them later on and asked if they could mail it back to me. They did with a thank you card. No! Happy hour on Sunday 2 to 5 pm. Only thing offered was a discount on draft beer. No discount on food or wine although the prices werent bad to begin with. $5.75 for a glass of barbera. Snacks were great and plentiful. The grilled vegetables were just salty enough and the bruschetta was more of a meal! The patio was closed but the bar area is cozy with very helpful staff. I've dined at the Volcano Union Pub + Inn 3 times now. Each time there's been one glitch or one dish that falls flat and that's a shame. We want so much to have a flawless dining experience, but it never happens. The vibe/decor/dress code is somewhere between casual and business casual, not that anyone is checking. A rustic interior with hand-tinted photographs on the walls. 80% of the time the meals are great (and we'll talk about the 20% later). Friendly service. Bright spots: - $4-5 craft beers on draft. Usually 3 standards and a rotating 4th beer. - Lamb Burger (one little comment about the pita bread further down the review) - Union Burger Here's where I have some issues. - Burnt gnocchi. I haven't seen this on the menu recently. I'm not sure how the chef missed the obviously brown and black burn marks on the underside of the gnocchi, but it happened. It was a crowded dinner service, so maybe that was it. At least they remedied the situation with another entree on the house. - Incorrect orders. Somehow the Vegetarian Burger became a Chicken Burger. By the time the replacement order appeared, we were 3/4 the way done with everyone else's meal. Again, the server was very apologetic, owned up to the mistake, and we were comped that entree. - Fresh Fruit Cobbler (peach on this day). Not a winner according to those that ordered. The peaches were not quite ripe enough yet. - Affogato (espresso & vanilla ice cream). Expected more for $4 than a shot and a scoop of ice cream. - Lamb Burger. (superior farms lamb, cucumber, olive tapenade, tomato, tzatziki, mixed greens, house-made pita, $13). Don't get me wrong, I love the Lamb Burger. My issue is with the handmade pita that serves as the bun. It's either too small or not the proper "bun to hold such a juicy burger. It's almost not possible to handle the burger without things slipping or falling off the bun. Maybe make the pita a tad larger. - Grilled Flank Steak (Yeung's farm tomato, house-made creamed corn, herb butter, $20). Two people ordered this recently and neither thought it was anything special. Both said they expected more. I really do like this restaurant for some very specific reasons (craft beer and Lamb Burger for one) but don't want to have my eating companions have the occasional sub-par meal. I also did find it interesting that the restaurant was not full AT ALL on a recent Saturday visit. We are used to waiting a little bit on Saturdays, but not recently. This is one of our favorite restaurants. We used to travel up from the Bay Area just to eat here. After moving to the foothills we were able to visit more often. In fact, we had our last "Hoorah!" meal there just before the pandemic arrived. We visited again a year later once things eased up and were pleased to discover we could still order some of our favorite dishes including mac and cheese, fried chicken and romaine salad. They always have a wonderful selection of local wines to enjoy with dinner and service is always good. Even Johnny, a restaurant regular, was sitting at his usual bar stool under his portrait hanging on the wall over the bar. Our only disappointment was the dessert selection. First of all, it was limited to three options and all were quite heavy (cheesecake, chocolate cake). We really missed the bubbling, cinnamon laced summer fruit crisps/cobblers so much that we passed on dessert for the first time. Hope they bring back some of their fruit desserts before the summer season ends! Still, the restaurant remains one of our favorites. read more

Well we went there for a birthday Lunch party and the prices were way too high. Well I didn't think so at first. 25.00 for salmon I thought ok.. well when I got it, the piece of salmon was about 2 inches square. With 2 pieces of cauliflower. I mean not two florets. I mean two pieces., and ground up cauliflower. Ate it in 2 minutes. No salad, no bread.. had to go home and eat. The bill for lunch was 79.00 for two. Really? They added 20% to the bill. The waitress was kinda rude. So she got a tip way more than I would have given her.. I'm not a cheap skate.. but really? We had no choice for food other than pasta, steak, salmon. My daughter and I planned a weekend getaway from Reno. The pub closed at 9pm and we drove in a little before 10pm. Someone came out and greeted us and brought our bags to our room. We got a goodie bag with an inspirational quote written on it. The gentleman Eric??) asked if we were hungry and we replied, "your kitchen closed at 8". He said, "i'm the cook and am here preparing for a wedding tomorrow so I can make you something"! He prepared their Pasta Carbonara, salads with glasses of wine. We settled in and came downstairs to a delicious meal. The breakfast menu was amazing; from bear claws, cinnamon rolls, avocado toast, frittata's, french toast, fresh fruit, parfaits... A couple of years has gone by since we popped in here. We had dined at their more formal sister restaurant, Taste, in Plymouth (very excellent) the night before and thought we'd make the visit complete by dining here too. The pub is warm, cozy and service is friendly and efficient. Since it was over 100+ degrees we opted to dine inside instead of in their pretty garden. We started with Grilled Figs (with prosciutto, gorgonzola, toast, local honey), and also Braised Pork Belly (served with seared peaches, arugula, pickled red onion, corn puree), both appetizers were excellent. I couldn't pass up the Lamb Burger and enjoyed every last bite, and that's saying something because it's huge! The Seared Salmon I sampled was very good and the Pulled Pork sandwich, a daily special, was said to be good as well. Our server was very sweet and mentioned that were might be a surprise if I used their wi-fi and checked in on Yelp. Sure enough, you receive a free sweet upon check-in. This is the only area that could use some improvement. We ordered both the Local Pluot - housemade sweet buttermilk biscuit, and whipped cream and a Peach Cobbler a la mode. I ate all the tasty pluots but left most of the dry biscuit. Would have preferred it in a crisp form or maybe with a real shortcake accompaniment. Mr. S was good with the cobbler but I thought it was a bit too sweet for my taste. It could have just been an off day for sweets. Very nice bed and breakfast. Comfortable room. The breakfast is superb. Deb and I stayed here before. We are staying here again. The dinners in the dining hall are the best. There is also a nice outdoor patio to sit at and eat. The employees here are very hospitable and kind. Volcano is a cute town to visit. When in Volcano make reservations at the Union Pub and Inn. This place gets 4 stars just because the waitress knew the difference between vegan and vegetarian! When I ordered my veggie sandwich, she made a point to tell me the bread had eggs in it, and recommended the pita instead. Not what I was expecting from a tiny little restaurant in a tiny little town. Pita was a bit tough to eat, so I just ate the veggies out of the sandwich instead. It was pretty tasty. My relatives ended up having the special, which was some type of fish. They didn't complain. My Dad got the fried chicken, with bacon & broccoli mac 'n cheese, and he seemed very pleased. I was also really excited that they had Angry Orchard cider, which is my favorite! Bathroom in the restaurant is pretty cool! Had to visit, based on the reviews here & we were not disappointed. Got here on a Sunday at lunch time & cozied up to the bar which we like to do to schmooze it up with the locals. We ordered a lamb & a beef burger & were not overly impressed, but the bartender was great & even poured us a freebie - black & cider to try. Had a delicious glass or two of the sangiovese - Yummy! They have a fantastic local wine selection. We came back late afternoon to sit outside & listen to the great trio, ordered the tempura & it has to be the best I have ever eaten! read more

We had the best dinner here on Monday night. The food was definitely four star but the prices were two. Our waitress was awesome, giving us advice (on our request) throughout the night. The atmosphere is casual and homey, a really great warm feeling. This place is really a gem in the middle of no where. I'm going to have dreams about my veggie lasagna. We decided to take a drive out to Volcano and have an early dinner. We have been there many times before and it's such a great place to relax and eat. We were greeted with friendly service and we took a table outside on their patio. Their patio has such a country charm and they now have portables heaters for the cooler days ahead. We started with their mushroom bruschetta...a real winner! Lots of great flavors with the hint of fresh herbs. I may have to have an order or two for my entree the next time I dine there. I ordered the fried chicken, since I had never tried it before. That was the only item ordered that was not spot on. The chicken was a tad bit dry and I had hoped for a little more crispy coating. The 38 Stout I had really hit the spot. The BF wanted fish 'n chips but they were sold out by late afternoon. So, he ordered a hamburger and it was delicious. The fries that came with it were also good and the homemade pickle topped it off. I had a lamb burger the last two times I visited and those are exceptionally good. Volcano is a small country town. Take your time and walk thru the stores and chat with the shop owners. It almost takes you back to another time in history. During another visit, Tracey showed us some of the rooms in the Volcano Union Inn and they are very nice, yet done with simplicity. It would be a nice place to stay if you are in this area. Volcano Union Pub is also the sister restaurant of Taste which is in Plymouth. That mushroom bruschetta and maybe a dessert next time is now on my "To Do" list! read more

Ever been to Volcano? My advice is to stroll the town's two main streets to work up an appetite and then head straight for the Union. Very nice food, a pleasant outdoor dining option, and good local beers and wines. I suspect that the menu and bar offerings might be a little constrained this year, but no matter. Tiny Little Town, Amazingly GREAT Food! We eat out a LOT and live in the SF East Bay Area. We can rarely say that EVERYTHING we eat during a restaurant meal is the best we've ever had, but this was the case at the Volcano Union Inn. We were referred there by a local businessperson in Sutter Creek and were told to expect an informal, relaxed setting and excellent, well-priced food. So, we weren't expecting anything more than a nice meal in a VERY small, but quaint town. That we were impressed is understating how much we enjoyed the place, the food, the ambience. Staff was excellent (attentive, knowledgeable, professional) the place filled up quickly as the Friday evening dinner hour progressed (we were glad we got there for an early dinner as there were people waiting to get in by 6:30) --- but it will be worth the wait if the place is full when you get there. Have a drink at the bar and anticipate your meal --- it'll be great! Next time maybe we'll stay the night! read more

Went here with my mom and sister after hearing about it for a while. It was a sunny late spring day so we sat outside. The service was super friendly and there was plenty of tables to chose from (some in the sun, shade, both). We ordered: Burger, Veg sandwich, Fried chicken, and a side of pickles. We went here for an early Mother's Day dinner with my mom and dad who live in the area. The food was great and the service was amazing! I had the asparagus lasagna, dad had the ribs, and mom and hubby had the fried chicken with mac & cheese which they both said they would go back for. My parents are looking forward to returning on a Sunday for live music and libations. We drove up the winding 12 mile road from Sutter Creek to the odd and mellow little historical settlement of Volcano. Here's what we had: a craft beer and glass of Amador County Barbera, an order of (5) duck wings that were fall off the bone delicious, a half order of terrific mushroom bruschetta, a crisp romaine salad to split, and a fried chicken entree to split with bacon/broccoli mac n cheese. Although it's been a year since my visit- I remember it clearly because the experience was amazing. The back deck outside at night was magical. The chef custom made my dinner AND desert special to accommodate food allergies. I told the waitress my allergy & she spoke to the chef & then informed me the chef would prepare something special,, and I was not disappointed. Furthermore I wasn't made to feel like a difficult guest because of my allergy. We were greeted upon arriving while waiting for a table and thanked upon leaving. Then days later I was surprised by a handwritten thank you note in the mail in response to the positive note on the service card at our table. My parents and I stopped by the Inn after our trip to Daffodil Hill this past Saturday. We were welcomed warmly by three waitresses at the bar, who suggested we may seat ourselves wherever we'd like. Since it was a nice day, we chose to sit in the charming secluded backyard area. We arrived early (around 4pm), so only two other tables were taken. After "trying on" several tables, we finally chose one and sat down. Our waitress came over almost immediately, brought water and menus, and when we expressed interest in having some beers, recommended to us the ones on the tap. We placed the order - grilled beat salad with a side of beef, grilled halibut with asparagus and a regular salad, also with a side of beef, plus an appetizer whose name I cannot recall, but it was toasted bread with mushrooms - and waited, sipping the delicious tap beer. While we waited, we read various facts off the back of the menu, such as that the town of Volcano used to be home to 10,000 (!!) residents in the 1920s, a surprising fact for the now small village of a 103. The food, when it arrived, was worthy of a cooking expo in presentation and of the Queen in taste and quality. The beef was cooked just right, the dressing in the salad was neither too runny nor too thick, and tasted so good, they must've added a touch of magic! Even the beets tasted delicious. The opinion of the halibut was likewise - it was soft with a light crispness on the outside, and mouthwateringly delicious. The portions, too, were perfect - enough to satisfy yet not overwhelm, with just the right amount of room for desert. The desserts are also worthy of mention. We ordered a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the butterscotch creme pudding and a strawberry shortcake. Each dessert came with a small biscotti that was soft, fluffy and unlike any we've ever tried. The shortcake and ice cream were delicious - the ice cream seemed to be homemade - but it is the butterscotch pudding that deserves all the praise! If that one hasn't won some plethora of awards for taste, texture and quality, I'd be really surprised! We left completely happy and satisfied. I hope to return one day soon! By the way, they will be having an Easter brunch next weekend from 3-7pm, and anyone going to that may well consider themselves extremely lucky! read more

Wow. My husband and I have stayed in all kinds of places in our many travels but Volcano Inn will always have a special place in our hearts. Upon arrival we were treated to various snacks and tea/coffee in the common area upstairs. Additionally there was a wide variety of movies and books. We loved the absence of cell service since it provided a romantic, peace-filled stay far away from the barriers of technology. The rooms were quaint but quite lovely with modern touches. They were very clean and well kept. The very definition of romantic and swoon-worthy. In the morning we were treated to a beautiful breakfast on the patio with the babbling fountain. It was no continental breakfast, let me tell you. No sir. This was a huge homemade breakfast: egg scramble, fresh fruit, yogurt, muffins, coffee, OJ. The lady who made us breakfast was delightfully chatty and friendly and only added to the charm of our stay. My husband and I were just thrilled with the price, room, food, and atmosphere, which the Volcano Inn has in spades. We can't wait to come back someday! read more

What a delight! We came here on a recent wine-weekend. We were seated on the patio as it was a lovely early fall evening. As we often do, we decided to share courses. Our first course was the amazing duck wings. They were crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. There was a nice Asian glaze and a bit of tasty slaw. Five good sized wings made for a good split. Next we has the lamb burger and an order of the Union Mac and cheese. The lamb burger was tasty and was accompanied by a nice little side salad. The mac and cheese, with smoky cheese, bacon and broccoli, was delish! Also enjoyed a bottle of local wine. All were reasonably priced. We look forward to our next visit! read more

We were in the area and looked for some place to get a bite to eat. There is not too much to pick from in the area, and didn't want to do the casino thing. The road was dark and winding, but we carried on through and suddenly came upon this very small town that seemed to be a couple of blocks long. It was a busy night, and it seemed people had reservations which we did not. The hostess was great having us step aside a few moments to wait on the line of people behind us to see what she can do. She managed to squeeze in a table for us in this busy restaurant, and we were grateful as we were starving. The place is not huge, but decorated with paintings by local artists available for purchase, and good size bar, and a great fireplace to add a comfortable feel. I ordered the Spicy Crispy Chicken Sando, hubby had the Union Burger, and we ordered a simple salad to share. That simple salad was truly very simple. Basically just lettuce which I think would be more eventful with at least a little bit of fixins on it. It took forever on this night to get our food. I know they were packed, but it really was a long time. A couple of beers and drinks later...we could have eaten anything. Some chips and salsa or even popcorn to hold us over was needed! BAD! My Chicken Sando was delicious with the Fresno Chili that gave a surprising kick at times. Loved that. The Union Burger was good...no complaints. We ordered some baked apple thing for dessert...sorry...forgot the name. It had a very small scoop of vanilla on it. Nothing exciting there...was dry in fact, and we didn't really detect much if any apple in it. It was a very small dessert, and we were thankful for that little bit of ice cream to moisten up the cake part that reminded me of Bisquick. We would come back again. The ambiance is nice, staff is friendly, and the food was alright. It's not fall off my chair good, but it's good enough if you are way out in these parts. read more
