Great food great service great hospitality. Yesterday the Ferrari Club of America did a drive to Gold Country and had the pleasure of a great lunch at Volcano Union Pub and Inn. They have really good food, drinks and a great place for large parties on the back patio (which is very private). They were able to handle our large party of 30+ with no problem at all. An amazing and unexpected experience in Volcano, Ca. After a day of wine tasting we went to this testaurant with our Santa Cruz friends who have a vacation home here. Two in our party ordered rack of lamb and it was cooked to perfection. Substituting fingerling pptotatoes for macaroni on the fried chicken was a breeze. I highly recommend it. read more

Thank you to Chef Erik! Amazing cauliflower steak meal with lentils: wonderful mix of flavors, beautiful presentation. I will want to come back a second time just for this dish. (So sorry I didn't get a picture.) We enjoyed chatting about the dish with Erik when he stopped by after the meal. We are impressed with his creativity and attention to the smallest details. Our server was also very nice and very knowledgeable about the menu. She took time to find answers to our questions about sourcing the ingredients. Went the other night for the first time, for my birthday. We live in Fiddletown so we are somewhat close. Usually frequent "Taste" in Plymouth but wanted something different. Food was good, however, the squash my wife had was not editable. One was raw and the other over cooked. Service was fine at first but our servers time was split between the tables and the bar. So, service fell off. Might return, but not for a special time. This event was a 3 out of 5. Maybe better next time. read more

Review for both lodging & restaurant... Friendly, caring staff cannot be beat. My rating is 5 stars first and foremost because of the wonderful women we met who work both the Inn and the restaurant (Mitzi, Amanda, Kathryn, Denise and owner Tracey). I planned a long weekend for my husband's birthday, and we arrived on Friday afternoon. We were warmly greeted and shown to our beautiful room. Please keep in mind, the Union Inn was a boarding house in the 1800s. All four rooms have been updated and they are modern and beautiful, but this is a historic building, with a pub operating downstairs. At mealtimes, it's not quiet in the rooms, but after 9pm, it's incredibly peaceful. Back to the staff...I became very ill within a few hours of our arrival, and these women were so helpful and kind to us throughout the entire weekend, catering to special needs and requests with so much caring. I wish I could say I ate more at the restaurant, but my husband really enjoyed his meals! We also went to Taste, the owners' restaurant in nearby Plymouth. My husband thought it was wonderful, and I'm sure if I was eating, I would have agreed! Back at the Inn, the breakfasts were absolutely beautiful, and any special requests considered. Each morning, special food was prepared for me because I'd noted at the time of reservation that I don't eat onions. Incredible service, incredible town. We plan to make an annual pilgrimage to Amador County and only stay at the Union. read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant but I am not a fan. The food was just okay and definitely not worth the cost. We ordered a vegetable sandwich, a burger and the hanger steak. Again, nothing noteworthy to say on the food and the staff was not the friendliest and honestly felt I was bothering them when we requested something. I really enjoy Taste (the owners other restaurant) but will not be returning to the Union Pub. read more

Alright, I'm going to get the negatives of this place out of the way first. I had made reservations earlier that day to sit on the patio. When I arrived, I was seated inside, and when I asked to sit on the patio like I had MADE RESERVATIONS TO, the guy seating me refused, saying that area was too full. He didn't even make an effort to apologize. Not a huge deal, but not the greatest way to start a meal, either. The patio of this place is gorgeous, featuring a beautiful garden and plenty of space between tables, among other wonderful things. The inside seating, however, is noisy and somewhat cramped in areas. You can see why I wanted to sit outside. OOOKAY. Enough negativity. Other than that, our waitress was friendly, and the service was pretty decent, despite the large crowd that was present. I got the Union Burger with a side of the Union Mac & Cheese. Everything was delicious. For dessert, I ordered the Union S'mores, which was fantastic, in terms of both flavor AND presentation. It was like everyone's favorite campfire dessert was served in a gourmet restaurant. It was both creative and delicious. :) Overall, this place is alright, save the little, ahem, *incident* we had regarding seating. If you're from out of town and in the area, and have an appetite, definitely give this place a shot. I doubt you'll be disappointed. As for the locals who have never eaten here, I strongly suggest it. You might just find a new favorite place. read more

In the small, sweet town of Volcano, Ca lies this gem of a restaurant and small hotel. I love springs and summers on the patio or winters by the fireplace. The food is amazing and some of the seasonal specials take local products and make them into mouth watering entrees. As a local I wish I had an excuse for an overnight stay (still working on that) but so fortunate to take a quick and scenic drive through the gold country to find my quiet and lovely town ready for me with a good meal or amazing cooking class. I feel fortunate to be close enough to dine at such talented chefs and staff and always look forward to the next class offered. A definite destination for the gold country!! read more

We stayed in Volcano June 10-12, which was my first time back in about six years. In the past, the Union Pub was fine for lunch but I preferred to eat at other places. But this weekend... WOW. We had the MOST delicious food and met friendly and amazing people, both employees and fellow patrons. The first evening there we had just arrived after spending almost six hours driving a 2.5 hour trip through traffic. The bar staff took great care of us, and recommended some fantastic wines. Two other guests gave us more recommendations on where to visit, and the bar tendress (Marissa) gave us a lot of advice on places in Sutter Creek to eat and go wine tasting. We ended up staying for dinner and had the Grilled Veggie Sandwich which was way beyond expectations. It was absolutely delicious! When we went back to the Whiskey Flat Saloon later, Marissa showed up with another bottle of wine from home that she poured for us! It was a great first evening. On Saturday night we decided to go back to the Union Pub for dinner (after wine tasting all day) and had one of the best meals I've ever had. We started with the Shaved Squash Salad, and the Grilled Apricots with mozarella, cherry tomatoes and pesto. AMAZING. We move on to the Roast Chicken and a dish of homemade Gnocchi with grilled corn, tomatoes and pesto cream. We were just expecting a nice meal but once again the food was SUPERB. My friend raved about the chicken, and I have never tasted gnocchi so delicious. After dinner we were stuffed, absolutely stuffed to the gills, but our waitress Mitzi convinced us to have Apricot Cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert. We only got halfway through it, but it was only because it was so delicious that we got anything down at all. I don't know how we managed to get up and walk back to our Inn. When the weekend was over we agreed that some of the best times we had were spent at the Union Pub. Six years ago I never would have spent more than one meal at the pub, but now it's a wonderful place filled with very friendly employees and seriously some of the best food I have ever had. Our family had burgers all around. They were insanely delicious. And for the Gluten-Free--- it's a perfect place for us. The menu is clearly marked with Gluten-Free items (or vegetarian, if that's your preference). A delicious, locally made Gluten-Free bun made this even better (that and the homemade pickle!). Fries are made in a separate fryer, so they're safe as well. I haven't had steak fries in forever-yum. My husband also got a very non-GF, delicious (per his description) homemade peach cobbler. How did we know he was a regular? A water color painting of same gentleman on the bar wall in virtually the same spot! Delicious appetizer of smoked salmon ,avocado,aioli,housemade pickled veggies.they should sell the pickled veggies as well, incredible....fried chicken was boneless, done to perfection and so moist and flavorful, did I mention I could cut it with a Fork????macaroni and cheese sublime with Gouda, and the smoothest roux ever tasted. Great wine choices, and beers too. My husband had homemade gnocchi with roasted veggies. Sweet and fresh....could have used a touch more salt in the water for the gnocchi. Dessert was a pear crumble, and a little too bland , could have used a squeeze of citrus to bring out an otherwise flavorless pear. Service fantastic...warm and friendly. Prices super reasonable. We did a quick quiet local get away at the Volcano Union Inn. We had dinner here as well. We noticed a lot of locals we're eating and drinking here. The place is rustic and old, but it was clean, the service was great and the food was fantastic. We shared a New York Steak with mashed potatoes and veggies. I also had a yummy strawberry asparagus salad. We were too full for dessert so we took a piece a cake up to our room to enjoy later with some local wine. We will definitely return to the Inn and want to try everything on their menu. Everything that passed by our table looked delicious! We have stayed at their sister inn Rest in Plymouth. While Union Volcano is older, rustic and lacks a few amenities I think we prefer it because it's charm, remoteness, and quiet read more

Menu has been reduced due to Covid. Diners place orders at the bar and receive a number to put in their table. Meals and drinks are paid for at that time. Food quality is consistently great even though service is limited. I will enjoy more variety on the menu in the future and special individual iced service from the waiters after the pandemic is over. Second visit here yesterday and another home run. We stopped in here last spring for their delicious mushroom bruschetta and some tasty wine. We've been dying to come back but it's a two hour drive, finally had the time yesterday. The patio is gorgeous, lots of beautiful plants and very tranquil. Since it was two hours there and back, we basically moved in for a couple of hours, wasn't too crowded so they didn't seem to mind our long lunch. Service was fantastic, very friendly and just perfect, not too much and not too little. Food is delicious! Started with the Crispy Duck Wings, super tasty, tender and crispy. Hubby had the Bolegnese which he enjoyed very much, said it had several layers of flavor. I had the Romaine Salad with Prawns, really delicious sauce on the prawns and cooked perfectly. They had a Pear Cobbler with Lemon and Rosemary a la mode, sounded so interesting I had to try it for dessert. I really wasn't sure the flavors would work, but I was so wrong! It was one of the best cobblers I've ever had. And I have to mention the decent wine list with the extremely reasonable prices. Really wish I lived closer and can't wait to go back! read more

I'm a local who has eaten here numerous times. While the food has usually always been good, yesterday the service was terrible. I had made reservations for a group of ladies for lunch. Colleen, our waitress, was not one who I recognized or had seen before. Her service was so poor. Once seated it took 20 minutes for her to come to our table. She poured water and left. Another 15 minutes to come back for our order. I ordered bread and asked we get it before our meals. She brought drinks twice to the table next to us and both times, before she ran off, I had to remind her about our bread order. Bread finally came, but lunch order took another 20-25 minutes to be delivered and everyone had only ordered salads! All at our table were so disappointed in what should have been a nice lunch. read more

Definitely the nicest and cleanest place to dine in town but I prefer something a little bit more authentic where I can meet some of the local people and get to know the town. This place is mostly full of uppity bay area tourists. (This is proven by the amount of Yelp reviews as compared to the other places to eat.) I was disappointed with my first try. The food was very bland and service was not good. I had expected non-frozen fries, although steak cut fries are best of the frozen options. Our waitress failed to check back at any point in our meal and we had to aggressively flag her after drinks were empty for 10+ minutes. Food needed salt and had very little flavor or taste, and I had lamb. Lamb was tender but Demi was dull and had very little flavor. My risotto was a bit crunchy and dull. I know most locals really love this place and I'm not sure if it is due to the lack of options or we just came on the wrong night. Manager was very polite and apologized for my less than happy experience. No excuse for bad service though as we arrived before 5pm and it was nearly empty until after our food arrived. read more

I had to write first thing this morning about my Valentine dinner experience with my husband and another couple last night. First let me say we had reservations and arrived promptly at 5:00. There were only a few tables already occupied, however, the young man who greeted us, sat us immediately in front of the door right in next to the bar. Right away I requested we be seated at one of the empty tables in the fireplace room. He said no they were reserved. I went on to tell him we had reservations also. He didn't flinch, so much for that! Our waitress came and told us the special. Rib eye steak. Two of our party chose that. While the food is always great, can't say so for the staff. The waitress neglected to tell us that the rib eye cost $32. We didn't find that out until she brought the bill. Everything else on the dinner menu was half that price! I would expect filet mignon to be $32, but not rib eye. It wasn't worth $32. The service was also very slow. I understand Valentine's Day makes for a busy schedule, however, it took us over 2 hours to get out from in front of the very cold drafty door. Please ask your staff to be more professional and courteous to your guests. Based on the bill when we eat at the Union Pub, servers get good if not excellent tips. Tell the waitress to quote the price of your specials. Ask the staff who seat guests to accomodate their requests when it's obvious they can. Don't wait for your guests to say WHAT THE . . . .? After reading the stellar review in the Sacramento Bee my husband and I decided to give the Union Pub a chance. We have been through Volcano many times but had never stopped to have lunch or dinner. I ordered the Fettuccine and my husband had the Risotto Jambalaya. The food was delicious but portions were small. Nothing was included with the entrees, not even bread. We ordered a side order of sourdough and butter for $1.50. Salad, soup, etc. were also side orders. For the price of dinner it was very disappointing. We were also asked by three different people whether we would like dessert, which we politely declined. At that point all I really wanted was the bill. Also our table was situated directly next to the restrooms, bad idea. Constant banging of the doors, should have asked to be moved. read more

We are great fans of Mark and Tracy and their restaurant in Plymouth, go there often. We had great expectations but were quite disappointed at our meal yesterday. My greens with a shallot vinagrette and herbs were lacking the herbs and the shallot vinagrette! Tasted like a little oil and salt were tossed and that was that. Pork cutlet was okay and the spaetzle was tough, like reheated. My partner's beet salad should have been sent back to the kitchen. The golden beets had black spots and were not marinated as desbribed, the pecans were forgotten. Our fault for not sending it back. The fish was okay and in general, we could never imagine this food leaving the kitchen if we had been in the Plymouth restaurant. Maybe they were having a bad day but it is not worth the trip to try it again. We'll stick with Taste! read more
