Lovely atmosphere! We sat outside on the patio. The place was pretty full but didnt feel crowded so the setup for seating/tables was well done. It was not too noisy - more like the quiet buzz of everyone enjoying the afternoon. They have a yummy selection of beers too. My husband and I had burgers which came with several options for sides. I had salad, he had fries. My mother-in-law is a vegetarian and she had a salad that was delicious too - made with fresh fruits that were in season & leafy greens. The chef was our server and he never let us know! Eric is amazing! The romaine salad will blow your mind. We had no reservations and showed up at 6pm on a Saturday. We were seated at a window high top and tended to by the incredible staff including the chef. They have great wines and good beer. But the romaine salad! Is is a play on a Caesar and absolutely amazing. We wish the gnocchi with pumpkin had a bit more butter and salt, but loved that they were home made and SO tasty. We live roughly two hours away from Volcano, and still make a point to come here at least once a year. The food is absolutely scrumptious, and the servers while sparse are all top notch--friendly and attentive. My favorite dishes are the Union Mac, and the burgers. It's helpful to know in advance that the hours are limited, and you need to place your order at the bar, but if like me you absolutely can't find good quality American fare to save your life, believe me, it's 100% worth it. The staff are extremely professional and friendly and the food is unmatched. I am hopeful that they will continue to flourish and be my favorite restaurant in the whole of Nor Cal. read more

We've driven by here numerous times and decided to check it out. The servers were very friendly and accommodating. Not sure why some reviews were low....as the food is out of this world. The lamb burger was perfectly cooked. Fried chicken was crispy and juicy. Their ginger beer is very refreshing and delicious. And I normally hate ginger beer. Honestly, a place is reviewed on food and service. If you're gong to complain about going to the bar to order food, go back to the city. If you're complaining about paying too much for a vegetarian meal, go home and cook your own veggies or stop by BK and order a vegetarian whopper for $8 since that seems to be more "budget friendly." Considering this gem is in a remote area, it's definitely worth the food. If you need to be catered to and spoon fed, this is not the place for you. A little gem tucked away in the quaint little town of Volcano. Stopped here after a failed attempt to ski at Kirkwood. Got a wagon wheel burger and the fries. Well the burger was huge and delicious with cheese, bacon mushrooms lettuce tomatoes and a pickles. The fries were bear battered and perfect. We also had the butternut squash soup which was great. The staff wonderful. Ask for Bailey a gem and very kind person. When we asked about the history of the town she gladly told us and provided us a walking map. Our dinner at Volcano Union Inn was the culinary highlight of our vacation. We like to go here on special occasions, and this was no exception. We got to the restaurant quite late, and the staff was extremely accommodating and kind and sat us despite a nearly empty dining room at closing time. Although the red wine selection is great--some local Barbera and Zinfandel--I ordered a wine cocktail, the Heart's Content (sparkling wine, house made grenadine, and chocolate butters). A little sweet for my taste (which I should have realized from the description), but nevertheless delicious with beautiful presentation. Our food was off the charts. The salmon entree is a must: perfectly prepared, served on top of risotto, carrots, and a spinach cream sauce, which pairs really nicely. My family members ordered the lamb burger, meatloaf, and spaghetti and meatballs, and raves about all of them. Came across this place and was so impressed starting with the cute little patio and then the young man that went over the menu and gave us the detail on how everything was prepared and lots of things from scratch. My husband and I love this place. We are local but it is always our first choice on a date night! Last Saturday we went for a last min date night. When we arrived we were greeted and give a great table. We both ordered the special which was a homemade fettuccine pasta with shrimp and cherry tomatoes in a lemon cream sauce. If you are anywhere near Volcano, this place is worth a stop for sure. Everything was amazing from their salads all the way to dessert. Personal favs included the mac and cheese, meatloaf and salmon. Confusing entrance. Should either have a host always there, or something that tells me to wait more clearly. Instagram really built up high standards of the quality of the meal. The gnocchi was too big and had a rough vs pillowy feel. The arugula was not massaged and over peppered. There were tons of employees so I find it unwelcoming to have to get up and go to the bar to place my order with only one bartender. The mac and cheese was just okay even with the addition of the broccoli and salty bacon. The place was packed and service was friendly. Prices are reasonable, especially the special they were having that night (which I didn't have), a sandwich and beer for $10! Now for the 4 room historic hotel... The building is historic and some of the interior decor is and isn't. The biggest turn off for me at this historic hotel was the flat screen tv. I know, I know, you don't have to watch it, but it just takes away from the historic feel. The bedding was very warm, especially because it was cold at night and I loved all the pillows. The shower was nice and hot, which can sometimes be a problem in historic hotels, but not this one! The carpets really really could use a cleaning! My room had a nice balcony and view. We didn't feel rushed although we came in 20 mins before closing. Sorry I don't remember his name...young guy, brown hair with a ponytail. Food: Fresh, quality ingredients. Presentation is delightful. I ordered the spicy chicken samo and garlic fries. Flavors were good, but I think the slaw on the samo may have been too much...the bun was drenched. Next time, I'd probably order it on the side. Price/Value: Average. I didn't feel that I was paying too much; the prices were very reasonable. Apps less than $10. Entrees $15-$20. Portions were adequate. Overall experience: Very pleasant. I'd come back to try lunch and stay at the inn. I'd recommend this restaurant to small groups and those without children. Almost hate to post a review, because I would love to have it all to myself. The overnight stay is always very comfortable, with snacks right outside your door. The bar restaurant downstairs are delicious. But the best is the breakfast in the morning... Yeah, bring your 4 legged fur friend and dine in the backyard where it's the best place to be after sun set. Get water melon salad with pickled bean sprouts. Don't share with anyone, it's the best. Gnocchi is super fresh and tender. Fried chicken with union mac is perfect dish to share if you find yourself tummy space challenged. Desserts are wonderful. The peach cobbler is sweet, warm and tasty. Very fresh. You make new friends with fellow diners when you are out with your cute puppy. Just simply can't stop getting people coming by to pet your companion, next thing you know the evening is upon us. No one rushed us. Service was perfect. A nice doggie bag for your pet, crunch fried chicken is best next day as a special treat for a certain 4 legged. Wine is incredibly reasonable here. You can get a glass for $6, local bier on tap too. It's a wonderful place, and only 2.5 hour away from the bay area. I would totally come back here to dine. Really reasonable price to boot.
