Gabby in Bakery! -- Gabby in Bakery went above & beyond her duty to help me. I normally shop at Gelson's and WholeFoods in Playa Vista & Marina del Rey area over 8 miles away. We're big fans of Tres Leche cake and have tried all the top tres leche producers all over Los Angeles and have up to $40 for a 9" cake. I recently bought a full sheet from Pavilions on 3rd & Vermont and had the entire company (many Latinos who are familiar with tres leche cakes) ask me for the bakery address & price. They were shocked at the tastiness. Unfortunately, only the Von's stores that serve a Latino customer base sell tres leche cakes. Thus, I had to drive 8 miles from my house to this store. I called about it yesterday & was told that plenty was in stock & didn't need to reserve one. Gabby overheard the call. She's in charge, but with 1 person who didn't show up, they didn't get to make the cakes. She felt bad for me so she stopped stocking and asked me when I'd be using the cake (because part of the cake was frozen). She proceeded to make/complete my cake! I saw her running back & forth to grab the fresh fruits for decoration, frosting, etc. The cake was more beautifully decorated than I was used to. She really saved the day for me as the birthday person specifically requested the tres leche cake. If it wasn't for Gabby, I would have had to drive another 10 or 21 miles to the stores that usually carry Tres Leche cakes, which is better than any other famous bakeries I've gone to, including El Salvadoran, Mexican and other specialty bakeries. Gabby saved the day! And, we get to enjoy the most milky, tasty tres leche cakes for a few days (everyone fights to take the leftovers). I'm busy today, but I had to do this for Gabby! read more

I highly advise against using Von's grocery delivery. If you decide to use them let this be your warning. You will likely not receive your entire order, especially if you want fresh fruits and vegetables. My delivery is usually short 4-6 items because they are not in stock. Also, expect to receive rotting produce. My last order included slimy and decaying Persian cucumbers, French green beans and mini sweet peppers. What's worst is that customer service has yet to reply to my email asking for a refund of those items. The email was sent 4 days ago. Good store...nothing special and tends to have longer lines than most grocery stores in the area. But again, overall a good store. One thing to note for my fellow smokers: cig prices are way to high...a cheap brand like Paul Mall or L&M are still over $6!!! My brand of choice, Parliament, are almost $8!!! Way too expensive!!!! This is my neighborhood store, but for about the last year I have been having lots of problems with the meat & seafood. It spoils way before the expiration date. When I return it, I don't get much of a response from the employees. Spoiled meat is a very big deal! Long lines & not enough cashiers has always been a problem here. I hate going here. Everything about this place is usually okay but no matter when I go there is always a dreadful line that takes like 15-20 min to get through. They have at least 10 cashier spots and there is always only 2 workers working the cashier. It's insane!!!!!! Every time I go, I get so frustrated I leave without buying anything and just curse this place mentally. They don't even have a self checkout so people could do it themselves. I am never going back because this never changes. I mean hire a few more cashiers because you are really pissing off your customers. One time we were in a long line (there is only one cashier working and it was on a weekend) and one of the customers in the front was trying to pay with coupons. So for the next 15 min, I know I checked, we waited as the cashier went about checking and talking to this person who was giving a hard time because they needed to pay with coupons or something. I was in a rush that day and I needed to buy a card and I was so disgusted with the long wait that I left without buying the card. I mean what the hell is up with this place? Awful awful awful! My groceries were never delivered and I did not receive a phone call until the following day apologizing. They did say they would be happy to reschedule for today. I routinely shop at this Vons but don't buy meat here. I tried today but they do not stock the meat in the weekly ads. It's not like they sold out. They didn't even have a space or price for the NY steak. I asked and was told to wait a few minutes. I waited and waited and then was told to come back after finishing shopping. The manager could learn a thing or two about customer service from the lowest paid employees in the store. The dairy section is full of expired products (be sure to check the dates!), and the wait time in the checkout lines is out of control. Don't bother complaining to "corporate" - they're just as incompetent!! I should've driven the extra mile to Ralph's. This place is a joke. read more

I have been shopping at this Vons for over 13 years and never once had a bad experience. This store is my other happy place. I feel like Norm from Cheers! Lol Everybody knows me. The customer service is absolutely the best.... well I witnessed someone who says she is a supervisor and new to the store Ms. Liz Torres call the police on two teenage boys. Two smart mouth teens. They were rude and I'm not condoning their behavior but NOTHING they did warranted calling the police. She claimed she has been in the grocery industry for over 30 years but couldn't figure out how to deal with some kids. Calling the police on teen boys of color for a smart mouth is ridiculous and in this climate -smh. Customers in the store and another supervisor said it was unnecessary and she was doing way too much. Another manager talked to the teens and they left: Liz Torres stayed on the phone with the police after the kids were gone. She new what she was doing and that is what bothered me. This is a great store and Liz Torres is getting the 1 Star! The store and everyone else is 5 star and more! read more

Went to get some food from the deli area and the woman helping me was moving very slowly and gave more attention to the conversation she was having with her coworker in Spanish. Do people not realize how rude that is when they are suppose to be helping their customer? After they rand me up, I noticed that something was missing and came back and I tried to explain what happened and didnt blame them but they got defensive focused on the fact that I wasnt charged and blamed me. They seemed more interested in finding out who to blame than how to resolve the issue. I have worked in similar jobs so I know what its like, this was so unprofessional. The manager seemed understanding and embarrassed and offered a gift card but I just wanted to inform him of what his employees are like. And while I was talking to the manager, the lady from the deli walked all the way over and pretended to do something while eaves dropping then she argued with me lol. What a joke. read more

I have had so many problems with this Von's I don't even want to shop here anymore but I love the service at the Von's on Manchester. The manager is very rude and doesn't want to help customers. I rarely ever bring up the race card but him and a cashier, I think with the name Jane to me are racist. As I was standing for help she clearly saw me waiting and did not once care to ask for help, if anything she gave me a dirty look and I see the manager helping out a customer who isn't of a colored race being very nice but once he saw me and my husband waiting at customer service he immediately asked rudely, "what do you need." I have been shopping at this vons for years. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I have been saving $$ using my just 4 you and club card. The crew at Starbucks always greet me with a smile. The bakery makes the yummiest goodies. My only complaint is the lines are way too long. Not enough cashiers. If the employees were not so nice I would go to my nearby Ralph's. For the employees 5 stars for who makes the schedule 1 star. A customer should not have to wait 20 min in line to make a purchase in the express lane. read more

Conveniently next to in-n-out. I would give this 3 stars but will subtract 2 stars due to their crappy jalapeño bagel quality. In years past, this Vons had wonderful bagels, but the last few years, they suck. Instead of jalapeño slices, they now use jalapeño bits. And in the past where the cheese was so plentiful as to cover the hole, there is now barely any cheese on it. My toes make more cheese in September than what's on their jalapeño cheese bagel. Don't believe me? Look at the photos. Now, this isn't happening across ALL Vons. The Vons in West LA on National and Sepulveda has some of the best bagels I've seen. See my review of that store coming shortly after this review. The Hermosa Beach Vons jalapeño bagel is hit or miss though. However, I will never pay for bagels here until they start looking more tasty. Is it the area? Are the people here not as picky? This apathy for the Jalapeño bagel must end now! This used to be a great store, but the last few times I have gone here the lines are stupid long! And to top it off they have 2 express lines open and 1 regular...considering there were more than 10 people in one line they need to do something. I remember when there were never more than 3-4 in a line and they would open another until it was in check. Last weekend was the last straw and I may not go back for actual shopping just for small items due to convenience. matter of fact it was so bad last time we left and went to Ralph's in el segundo, there were at least as many people in the store ( ralphs ) but they had enough lines open to handle it...for that matter there we're even extra employees available to help the customers. Von's may need to go check it out and see what they are doing wrong. I have been shopping in this Von's since it was smiths! And lately it's just gone way down hill, kinda disappointing. read more

My all time favorite Vons. I wil go out of my way to shop at this store. Yes the shopping center can be a little hectic with car and so forth but what popular desitination doesnt have traffic? I like everything about this store: good selection, good prices, great discounts, clean, roomy isles. If none of that were true I would still go there due to the wonderful pharmacy. Everyone who works there is knowledgeable, efficient, friendly, and very helpful. Their pharmacy tech is outstanding. I shop at Trader Joes and Costco, too, and I can always find what I want at Vons that the other stores don't carry or the volume is too great. read more

This place is quite consistent. I come here often and over the years it has held its own against the other stores where I go from time to time, getting things that they don't stock here. Plus, I use the pharmacy here and really like it. Also, I bank using the bank service in here and that is very convenient. This would get another star but for two gripes: The check stands are always with a slow moving line and there aren't enough of them open, and the choke point at the entry makes entering and leaving the store sometimes difficult (there is a Starbucks inside blocking the entry/exit). Attempted to shop at Albertsons this morning and that bad experience made me realize just how great this place is. read more

Will never shop here again!!! It began in the deli - both service people had their backs to me while chatting for about 5 mins until finally one turned to see if I needed help. Then could not get my order correct, did not ask which brand of deli meat I wanted. As I pointed to D&W, she gave me the Vons brand. Moved onto the meat department and wanted to order some shrimp from the service counter. Only one service helper and his back was turned washing pans in the back. And was so far away with the loud water spray, I did not think he could hear me yell for assistance. I waited patiently for him to finish but he never did and not once looked back to check on customers. I gave up and picked up some pre-packaged shrimp. Finally in the check out line....no baggers (even the cashier complained that they never have enough baggers) I proceeded to bag my own groceries and finally when one showed up I had one bag left. He tried to assist but worked so slow a the last bag, I finished it myself. He didn't seem to care. Will return to Ralph's for my grocery shopping, Vons has lost a customer! read more
