The cashier's and bagger's customer service needs an overhaul at this store. The young women and men who have the above mentioned jobs need to be retrained on eye contact , greeting a customer at the start of check out and thanking them at the end of check out. Also, for bagging groceries retrain them to properly fill the bags so that they are not too heavy and to load all items into the customer's cart and to not expect the customer to load their cart. I had the worst experience, beyond the usual rudeness, this past Saturday in four years of shopping here and will be discussing it with the manager. Nine times out of ten I will choose the self check instead of this one rude young woman however I had to purchase wine for an upcoming party so I could not use self checkout. read more

Don't order curbside. The one time I order curbside and I never get my groceries. The website allows pickup times until 8pm , but the workers said that the online order people leave at 7:30pm. This isn't stated anywhere. I was met with rude and uncaring workers. I ordered online for a reason and I was there at the curbside spot before 8 pm like my pickup time ( anytime between 6-8pm). There were two workers that didn't even care and said they can't do anything. They just said come back tomorrow. I needed groceries today that was the whole point. I paid for my groceries. read more

I frequent this location due to the close proximity to my home. I managed many years in the grocery business and this location needs to clean up. The outside area is constantly a mess. There is overflowing trash cans and paper and trash on the ground. Many employees walk by and not one will pick up the trash. This is the first impression you are leaving your customers. I have also noticed that ALL employees park in the spots closest to the store when there is a very large parking area further out. The employees should use the parking area further out and leave the in close spots for your customers. As a manager the first thing that I did before opening my store was to police the front of my store so that my customers saw only a clean and inviting entrance. read more

I usually buy everything and anything at this store and spend $$$ a week. Unfortunately, I recently went there to buy a light bulb for my new table lamp and as I was not sure about the right voltage or kind of bulb I needed the cashier who helped me suggested that I buy different bulbs, try which one works best and return the rest if need be. To my surprise when I went back there to return the extra bulbs that were in their closed box and clearly never used, I was told that the sale was final and that cashier did not give me the right information. Although the price is very minimal, the fact that this person made a mistake or gave me the wrong information on purpose is simply wrong as it is misleading and dishonest. I just came to this location for the first time and I was overcharged for the dragonfruit that's already really expensive. It was supposed to be $7.99 a pound and I was charged $9.99 a pound. I realized when I got home, so I called. They offered to refund me the difference if I come back in with my receipt. Since it's out my way, I asked if I could just get it refunded to my rewards card or something; but apparently the only option for them overcharging me is to inconvenience me again by having me go out of my way to the same Vons location. It appears I previously gave it the one star due to long wait times... this changed long ago and everyone that works at this store is amazing and like family - all the managers and also the daily staff. However, what really made me come back to change my yelp is the extraordinary service in the deli counter by Emma. I am particular how I slime my deli meat sliced and not only does Emma do it perfectly, but she goes out of her way to provide rockstar service every time she sees me. If someone is there and all goes well, she just checks in. If there's an issue, she will drop what she's doing to make sure that my order is correct. As I shared with her this evening ... after a particularly stressful weekend of work - I can't think of anyone who goes out of her way for me and makes sure I'm happy like she does. Attendants that work in the self checkout area are so MISERABLE and rude. I have asked for help very politely and they look at you like you are the scum of the earth and don't say anything to you. Like im not asking you to take care of my first born child im literally asking you to just scan your badge so i can finish checking out. Thats it. Not hard work at all. I rarely find produce in poor shape unlike other stores I have shopped. The one thing I dislike is, and it sounds funny, is the WIDTH of the doors for entrance/exit. Here are some reasons why. 1. 90% of the staff doesn't care why you're there, what you're looking for, or knowledge of general products. Most cashiers just talk shit on each other and YOU while you're in front of them. There ARE a few that are amazing, and I feel bad that they have to be surrounded by these people. 2. I gave this store two stars simply because I like the cashiers here. I personally shop here because it's my neighborhood store and then I do majority of shopping for Instacart. The produce guys are absolutely the best and most helpful. The deli usually seems understaffed and long waits, but the staff is very friendly as well. Cashiers have always been cool, and I love Katie. Not sure the main cart attendants name, but he has always been helpful. Managers have been helpful to me in past as well. My big grip and problem is the Butcher and his department. The main morning guy is so full of attitude, unfriendly, unhelpful. You ask him a question related to a cut of meat and he is belittling. Example.. I say to him that my customer is asking for a specific cut on a pork chop, and I get... "So, you're basically asking me for?" Listen dude! I don't need your sarcasm as to if it's my question or the customers question, I just need the product, or simply a yes or no! If this was the first time of an encounter like this, believe me I wouldn't be writing this. But it's every time. If I did this back in my retail days I'd get warnings and then I'd be written up. This jerk also watched me walk all the way up to the door, just to then tell me I needed to use the other side. Like it's a game to see how many people walk up all the way, so then they can tell us to go to the other door? Then other night I was in shopping and another guy in the butcher department looked stoned out of his mind. It took forever to get a cut of salmon, and when I did get it, it was under weight for what I asked, but I wasn't going to deal with trying to ask for another piece. VONS on Bristol gets five stars mainly for the skill of their bakers, but for other reasons as well. One of my goals, during my three years of residency in Costa Mesa, was to explore and take photographs of the nearby deserts, usually Joshua Tree National Park, Anza Borrego State Park, and Death Valley. For some of my photography in the desert, I needed a decorated birthday cake. My attached photographs show pictures of the decorated birthday cakes from VONS, used at two different birthday parties at Joshua Tree National Park. VONS bakery department was wonderfully helpful, because they inserted several long and thin wooden sticks inside the cakes, to make them sturdy during the four hour drive to the desert. Also, I needed these birthday cakes to remain intact while I carried them to special locations in the desert. Also, VONS did a great job at decorating my cakes with writing. Once, a different person with poor handwriting added the writing, and I asked for my cake to be re-done by another decorator, and VONS personnel cooperated happily and redid the writing. Also, VONS did a great job at cooperating with my schedule, and finishing the cakes on time, because my photography also required the simultaneous purchase of 15 helium balloons from the party store located across the street on Bristol. There are other reasons to like VONS. Their onion sandwich buns are yummy and inexpensive. Trader Joes across the street does not carry onion buns. Also, I like the pop-top cans of jalapenos, Trader Joes does not have these either. Moreover, VONS has cases of TWINKIES, unlike Trader Joes. I love Twinkies. Twinkies were invented long ago by James Dewar. Additionally, I bought Peet's coffee from VONS. This is only a small gripe. VONS keeps your name in your system, and the checker reads your name to you, when she hands you the receipt. But VONS inputted the wrong spelling for my name. And so, it is always the case that the checker pronounces my name wrong. And there is no easy way to correct the name's spelling in the computer database. Oh well, just a minor gripe. read more

If I could give no stars, I would. It the second time I buy bad seafood there. First it was some crab claws, second time, a huge piece of salmon. I bought the salmon yesterday , today I opened to cook and the smell was just putrid. I called the supermarket and talked to someone in costumer service asking if I could bring the piece of salmon back or the package. I told her it was in the trash. Family came in on Monday night just to buy some frozen food, snacks, etc. we come home, open one of our packages of frozen food to find mold growth. Fantastic. Guess what? We opened another package of our frozen pasta and boom. Mold, just growing. The expiration date for these packages weren't until another month, but it just shows the negligence of incorrect food storage. We came back 30 minutes later, came to cashier Terri (or Kerri)and wanted to speak to the manager. Seems like she was really adamant about us not talking to the manager. She had us sign a receipt and I was about to complete it as she promptly just grabbed the receipt out of my hand. Not to mention, no apologies whatsoever about our purchase. So tonight I went in to pick up some odds and ends and some wine for dinner. I always go with 6 btls as they have the discount for buying 6 or more. I bought 7 bottles... 6 under $10 and one $16 for dinner tonight. All budget wines to try out, daily drinkers etc. can't be spending much since times are a tad tight. Anyway, paid walked out. Thought about it for a second and went back to look at the receipt. One bottle was $44.99!!!!! What the heck, so I go back in thinking I must have grabbed a wrong bottle or something. I go back to the aisle to check and the wine is there ON THE BOTTOM SHELF. So I go talk to the manager Jordan. She tells me I can't return the bottle because Cali law doesn't allow it. I can only exchange. What the heck! So I go back to the wine section and grab 5 bottles to make the equivalent amount (which I already didn't want to do...there goes the budget.).... She tells me I have to grab a 6th bottle to get the discount. NOW I'm even more annoyed. Not only did your mistake make me have to buy more than I wanted to, but you won't even give me the 6 bottle prices because of this whole fiasco?!?! She wasn't even really apologetic about it. REALLY POOPR CUSTOMER SERVICE. The stock boy in the wine aisle apologized to me 5-10 times and thanked me over and over for showing him where the mis-stocked wines were. I used to buy sandwiches for lunch here as it was close to where I worked. On one occasion, some of my coworkers asked me to pick up lunch for them -- 4 sandwiches in all. I got there before 11:30pm, well ahead of the lunch rush. At the time, there was no line and one worker. I had a list and told her what I wanted with some minor modifications. After the second sandwich, her boss began helping. They both seemed a little irritated that I had a list. After wrapping everything up and handing me a bag, the boss, who looked annoyed at the task, told me to call ahead for large orders. I replied, "Oh sorry, it was just four sandwiches. I didn't know I needed to do that." She responded, "Yes, for large orders." How about, "Hey thanks for coming by, but could you please call ahead for group orders?" I could have given our hard earned money to any other business, but I chose this location. Politeness with a "please" and "thank you" would have been nice. If there was an actual line, I would have better understood their annoyance, but I was the only one there. On another occasion while buying lunch, there was a homeless person in front of me asking the employee behind the prepared foods counter to heat up some food he had. That's fine. That's not what annoyed me. Everyone needs to eat. I can wait. What bothered me was the employee was cleaning before the homeless guy asked for help. Then afterwards, he made my sandwich without washing his hands. So after using cleaning products and then handling someone else's random food, he then proceeded to make my lunch with no regard to hygiene. Yum. I took the sandwich and left it on a store shelf. Next time, and there won't be one at Vons, I'll be more assertive about asking someone to wash up before putting together something I'm eating. It's a health concern. read more

Part of my love for this grocery chain is that I grew up with it; consequently, childhood nostalgia is a big part of my 4 stars- bias as it may seem, ultimately, it's a testament to Von's doing a good job in providing positive experiences, even for this kid who dreaded being stuck with her mom on long shopping ventures. (I was a tomboy. :) Anyway, I digress- bias aside, what I like most about this store is the quality and quantity it carries. Even the cheapest brands, usual the Von's brand, is most always good quality. I also appreciate the savings I find on the Von's app. The 'just for you' prices are pretty darn good; by utilizing the app, I have saved a lot. The interior is more calming than most other stores - like those whose interiors are as starch white as hospital walls and more flood-lit than Alcatraz. Along with a better interior, People who work at Von's are nice and helpful. In regards to this particular location, my only complaint is the long line that can form a little later in the night. I've been stuck in some lines ..a mean one line, as in the only line open in the entire store. It's occasionally taxing. read more

When I tell you worst decision ever they give you expired groceries that are 50% off because they're expired (disgusting) or they substituted items in your order with no warning so you don't get what you need!!! Also don't even try to call the store to fix the problem because you will be on hold for 20+ min waiting for a answer and they hang up on you!!! Is it me or are the most common times to grocery shop is Sunday or Monday? I came in on a Sunday evening to shop for the week and there are never enough checkouts open and produce isn't stocked up. If it wasn't for sales on frozen entrees I would skip this grocery store. I also get flowers there as no other florists are in the area. Not having fresh bananas pissed me off the most as it's such a grocery staple that most people get!! Errr!! It's true what everyone writes about in the reviews about the customer service here. It's HORRIBLE!! You are LUCKY if you get a good cashier. The cashiers are rude, talk to other employees and don't acknowledge you. I've even complained to corporate about this Von's about the customer service and the "store manager" called me to apologize but he wasn't really professional about it. You will NEVER really find anyone in the customer service desk. Oh, and forget it with the Starbucks girls! They are so rude and look like they hate their life. The bakery.... My God!! The women that work there are so rude. As if they don't know the meaning of customer service. The flower shop area never has anyone at the station to assist you. The lines are always long since they usually only have 2 lines open. This Von's is pretty much a "do it your self, good luck!" Type of grocery store.
