Joseph Micheal's 3.5 Stars Vesna at Joseph Michael's 5 STARS!. After my former hairstylest went Hollywood on me (literally I called to make an appointment and was told he was booked at the MTV movie awards) I decided it was time to stop flying to Ohio just to get my hair cut. The first two years was like bad dating with an ok couple first dates only to land in disasterous second of third dates. That was until I found Vesna. I starting going to Vesna's in my early 20s and have continued into my 30s. Having a very conservative job but never wanting to look like I was 26 going on 50 Vesna has helped me manuever the trends to keep me current while always looking classic and professional. She is also a master at color teaching Aveda color classes to other professionals. Tired of highlighting Vesna has helped me find an all over color combination that works, which no other stylist has been able to do without me ending up looking like the great pumpkin. The best part is she is patient and listens. Over the years I've had one or 2 cuts or colors I have not loved (by no technical fault but by my own preference of wanting to "try something new"). One call and she's had me back in her chair with solutions to address the issue with me always walking out happier then ever. Instead of me flying to Ohio I know have my mom flying to Chicago to see Vesna. As for Joseph Michael for the most part the salon is very nice. The drink bar is a nice extra. There are a few stylist and receptionists that have come and gone who sort of had that "salon" attitude (no thank you) but the owners seem very aware of the situation and seem to make adjustments when needed. Their prices are a little high but not out of this world and if you have a car you can suprisingly usually find street parking right out side during the week. If you can find a stylist you work well with its a good choice. read more

I can't believe I haven't raved about Megumi on here! Megumi does haircuts/styling/coloring and does the best job of anyone who's tried to defrizz me yet. I think the first time I walked in (several years ago), I was like, "do something with this" and let her at it - I'm still a fan to this day! And she didn't even yell at me for getting a $5 "bang trim" at a chop shop close to home - and fixed the damage! She's pretty much the only person I would trust to razor cut my hair... My five stars is for the hair. I've only had one other service here - a facial (deeply discounted for a charity event or groupon or something like that, I believe). It wasn't stellar, but my face didn't fall off either. It's typical Near North pricing, and hurts my wallet, and takes me forever to get there....but I'll continue to go because my hair just rocks! read more

For beautiful hair color and styling, I recommend Stacie - she is really talented, friendly and knowledgable. I have always been hesitant to color my hair and have stuck to my natural color. It's hard to find a good hair stylist. I've been going to Joseph Michael's Salon since 2005 or 2006. This is the longest relationship I have ever had with a salon or stylist in my life! Megumi is great and she encouraged me to go with my hair's natural waves. I used to spend so much time blow drying and straightening my hair. Megumi has showed me how to manage my wavy hair with different techniques and products. My routine is so much easier now! The best part is that I can completely trust her. We've followed Ronnie Brooks from his student days. He does a great job with color, highlights and low-lights. He can get the job done within your time frame but never make you feel rushed. He is also considerate and tends to your needs by getting you drinks or fetching your coat from the closet. Small details but part of the whole package. He is respectful of your wishes but will make suggestions for a great new look. The "we've" part of this review comes from the fact that my daughter also goes to Ronnie. He cut her long hair off so she could donate it to "Locks of Love". He has seen her through color changes (blue, pink, platinum). He has corrected some colors that her friends tried on her. He also did her hair and makeup for her prom. She was stunning and I overheard many people wanting to know who that gorgeous girl was. Did I mention eyebrows? I was looking for a simple haircut and I did not know that I have made appointments for a total look makeover. Vesna did an amusing work. It took her about 20 minutes and during that time Vesna managed to give me a new short haircut that framed my round face, hid my high forehead and complemented my large cheeks and my wide ear to ear smile :) A couple of weeks later, I decided to address my roots. Char decided to take on the challenge. I was looking to cover my roots and grays. I also wanted to go back to my natural hair color. Char did a remarkable work. She matched perfectly my natural color and added some high and low light on the front to give me a young, funky and fresh look. There is truly no day that I would not get a complement or two about my new look. My friends, told me that I look 10 years younger. They also commented that my new hair color complemented my green eyes and made them "pup up". Some of them told me that I should never go back to long hair. On top of it, the hair cut is almost maintenance free and so easy to take care of. Nice place, needs better staff and less "stuffiness". When the place is in Gold Coast, and the prices are high you expect nothing but excellence.... Char is a great colorist! Very talented and well established. A bit pushy, but trust her - she knows what she is doing, and - more important in some cases - what needs to be done. I tried 2 other colorists there but I think she is the only one who can make the right color on any hair from the 1st try. I tried pedicure with one girl...and will never do it again. OMG! Gregory is back in Chicago! I couldn't be more pleased. Gregory has been cutting my hair since I moved to Chicago 6 years ago. I was completely heartbroken when he moved to Miami. In his absense, I visited several so-called "top notch" salons only to be utterly disappointed. The work by their wannabe hairstylists sucked. I've scoured throughout the city and surrounding suburb, only to be left disappointed. This is partially due to the fact that not everybody can cut Asian hair because of its coarse and thick nature. After countless searches and reading reviews, I decided to take a chance with Joseph Michael. The salon has a serene ambiance as you enter. From lounging to a large selection of complimentary drinks, each client is welcomed in an inviting manner. I'm always impressed by the level of attention and detail my stylist takes to cut my hair. Though it can be time consuming, the entire experience from start to finish exceeds my expectations every time. Considering I'm on a college budget, the haircuts and services are more on the pricier end. But for the quality and consistency of the haircut, I highly recommend it to those who are very particular about their cuts. However, I would definitely recommend checking out their website to find a hair dresser that best suits your needs. Whoever you decide to go with, the level of experience and talent they have to offer won't disappoint you. That being said, making an appointment prior will ensure you a spot, especially since it can get extremely busy on weekends. I got married October 1st 2016 and booked Ronnie to do my bridal hair along with my bridesmaids. We secured him for the wedding and reception. I paid for a trial in advance through the salon and confirmed the night before. Sadly, by 7am he had not shown up- I wondered if he was ok. After several text messages there was no answer. We checked social media and he had de-friended/blocked us from his professional and social networks. I share this because I don't want anyone else to experience what I had to. I got signed as a model at a Chicago agency, but my forehead and face would not stop breaking out no matter what products I tried. People compliment me on how clear my face is now, I barely ever wear make up, and I haven't had a zit in like 2 months. Emilia is so sweet too, the massages are great and so are the products. The service here was great! They offered a beverage right away, I was taken care of quickly, and while getting my nails done, we had great conversation. The reason for a 3 star is because of how my nails turned out. The polish did not go to the edges of my nails. The color was discomforted within two days. And my thumb chipped in a day and it is gel. Best hair color in town. Patrick Russo, hands-down, does the best job on hair color in Chicago. He is creative, personable, and up-to-date on current styles and trends. He has fixed my hair when I, in a drunker stupor allowed someone else to color it, and he has fixed the problems of many other people I know. On top of that, he is great at just giving you a "new look" or a "summer style." I could not be happier. (Note: Patrick now has his own salon in Arizona. I had a facial with Charmaine and it was wonderful! The moment I stepped in to the Spa, I was greeted with a bottled water and offered delectable snacks. I was ushered back to a gently scented, softly lit area, outside of the spa rooms where I was to relax prior to the facial. Charmaine, the esthetician, was obviously very knowledgeable, beginning with a thorough skin analysis followed by a discussion about my daily skin care routine. She then began a facial treatment customized for my skin type, explaining each phase of the facial, and while the mask dried, I received a gentle head and shoulder massage~ it was all very relaxing! Although previously I have had good experiences at this salon, and I used to buy all my hair and nail care there, the most recent experience had left me VERY disappointed. My 2 best friends and I booked Mani/Pedi appointments to celebrate one of the girls graduation from Grad School. Everything was fine until 2 days before the appointment the salon called and said they were sorry but one of the nail techs had an emergency and they would be be able to accommodate us. I called back and spoke with the manager, and while she was apologetic, she said there was nothing she could do and that we could have 2 appointments or none. She never even offered to make amends or other arrangements for us. There are WAY too many quality places to got your nails done with out the poor attitudes and unprofessional behavior. I will never recommend this place to anyone nor will I ever step foot inside again! read more

I have mixed reviews. I get my hair cut there and love my stylist (Leland) so I thought I would branch out to some of their other services. I booked a massage/facial package. Overall, I was pleased with the experience. My first facialist (Nicole) was helpful to explain things and guide a newbie like me through the process. She even tried to relax my sensitive red skin before walking out looking like I was beat up. Even a tad bit of makeup which I very much appreciated. I have since booked 2 facials with a different person leaving me with the mixed reviews. First facial with Renata was nice, spot on and man does she love doing extractions! The second appointment was rushed, not prepared and in the end left me red and splotchy with no kind attempt to soothe my skin (even if it was in my own mind and nothing was gonna help). The appointment did not last the full time. We even had interruptions that she in no way tried to make up for or fully apologize for. I am continuing to break out after this facial and feel that a few areas were due to improper extractions. I don't believe I will be going back for facials. I do not feel cared for as a client and it's definitely not worth the price in the end for that service. read more

I live in the neighborhood and was looking for a color appointment short notice. I called and scheduled an appointment with Katie. I'm very picky about my color since I am a "blonde" and have had some very orange hair in the past. Katie was great. She listened to my neuroses with patience and concern. She suggested doing a highlight instead of my normal balayage to brighten up and blend my existing color. It turned out beautifully! I normally avoid highlights in fear of the 90's streaks but they turned out gorgeous, blended, and totally natural. I will absolutely be returning to Katie. My friend referred me to her after getting a haircut from her in NYC (Megumi was then auditioning with Bumble to style for NY fashion week). This is my third time going to her at Joseph Michael's, and she has been super meticulous every time. She works that razor and textures like nobody's business. (No clippers! Even for my short guy hair, which I really appreciate.) I knew she was a definite keeper when I went in today for a quick, complimentary neck-trim/clean-up (which typically takes 15 minutes or less), and she ended up giving me a near full cut since she had extra time. She's an amazing stylist and incredibly generous with her time, and I'll definitely be back! read more
