    Wes B.

Its been roughly 10 years since I've been to the Waffle House. Why did I allow so much time to pass? Well Dennys, IHOP and other breakfast based restaurants were more appealing during that time. But having grown tired of going to those same places over and over again, I went out on a leap of faith and decided to visit the Waffle House. Being that I did not go during a time when the night clubs in RVA had closed for the evening, my overall experience couldnt have been that bad. So how did my experience go? Read below to find out. The Good: Service- Once I walked into the restaurant, i was directed by staff to sit wherever I wanted and that a server would be by to take care of me. Since the menu's were already located at the table, I quickly saw what I wanted prior to my server arriving. The server was very charismatic and had a down to earth personality. She took my order and in less than 10 minutes my food came out. It was impressive because the restaurant was near capacity. Price/Portion- I ordered the Ham and Cheese Omelet which came with Toast, Hash Browns and I ordered a side of bacon. The total cost of my meal was a little over $7. The portion for what I paid for was very reasonable too. I felt somewhat full after finishing my meal. The Bad: Flavors- Do you know the saying "you get what you pay for"? Well it surely applies to Waffle House. The food was not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it did not contain the flavors you may find at an IHOP or Brickhouse Diner. The omelet tasted like it had Kraft sliced cheese in it, hash browns were very bland and bacon was nothing to write home about. Once again, for the price paid for the food, one cant be too picky. Overall- Waffle House is known for its low menu prices and... ITS WAFFLES. I did not order the waffle because I'm not much of a waffle person. But the service was good, food was cheap and I was full. I could see myself going back to this Waffle House but it would not be my first choice of breakfast places. THREE STARS.

Several servers came over right away to ask our drink orders and give us menus. My husband ordered the country fried steak with gravy and eggs, and I got the chicken and waffles and a side of grits. Everything was very tasty. This might seem like a small thing, but the iced tea was fresh brewed and very good. I cannot stand iced tea that comes out of a machine or that is powdered. This was clearly fresh and they served it in big mason jars. This is one of my key things with a restaurant. If they don't have freshly brewed tea, I really don't enjoy my meal as much. I was thankful that this place had great tea. The server checked on us throughout the meal. We would definitely go back again.

Mimi ordered the fried pork chop (4.5/5, thin cut but seasoned and fried well)meal with mashed potatoes (2.9/5) and collard greens (a bit dry...leave the "pot liquor" thats where the flavor resides, lol). The family vibes all through out the venue made us feel welcomed and the love shown to the staff by the patrons sealed the deal! If you want a good home cooked meal head over #southerntastediner!

If I could I would have given it 4 1/2 stars, because it was good but not great but definitely well enough not to drop it to a 4. Let's start with the location: very nice and everything seems real clean and cared for. Even the men's room was decent at 6:00 pm at night. Now our server: Sidney was very attentive to us. She took very good care of us during our stay. Now the meal: Again it was good. The wifey had the Blackened Chicken Alfredo. She tells me the sauce had a nice flavor but the chicken really had no flavor. Certainly not a Blackened flavor you would expect. The chicken itself was good and tender. As for me I had Shrimp and Grits. It also was good. It had onions and peppers in it and again the flavor of the onions and peppers just want there. Who knows. We also had the Brick Oven Brie. There was a really nice amount of Brie. So much that the toasted bread ran out way before the Brie. So as I said this was a good place and meal despite my small hits in this review. I firmly recommend this place because I do expect you to have a nice meal. Ps. To the owners: your link to your website doesn't work via Yelp. To potential customers: you will have to go your search engine and find the Charred site.

He had been involuntarily assigned to transport supplies to Washington, D.C. for government-related work despite not even working for the government. He was completely exhausted and just wanted a meal before finally getting some sleep. He placed the order on the restaurant's website, which automatically redirected it through DoorDash. The order was confirmed, had an order number, and had already been assigned a driver. Then, out of nowhere, the restaurant canceled the order. Since my husband was exhausted, I called on his behalf. The first employee told me their DoorDash tablet wasn't even on, they never received an order, and they didn't cancel anything. Then another employee admitted they did cancel the order because they weren't working with DoorDash. During this process, I was hung up on twice. I then contacted DoorDash. Their customer service was polite and confirmed there was a valid order, a driver had been assigned, and the restaurant canceled the order. Unfortunately, because the order was placed through the restaurant's website, DoorDash couldn't issue a refund and advised me to contact the restaurant. When I called the restaurant back and explained what DoorDash had told me, the employee began speaking to someone else in Spanish while I was talking and completely ignored me. Every time I tried to explain the situation, she talked over me. I repeatedly said that all I wanted was our money back. Instead of helping, she denied everything and then hung up on me again. After that, they stopped answering the phone altogether. I was polite at the beginning of every conversation. It wasn't until I was repeatedly hung up on and ignored that I became frustrated. Mistakes happen, but the way this situation was handled was completely unprofessional. Hanging up on customers instead of trying to resolve the issue is unacceptable. If you're going to take orders through your website that are routed through DoorDash, then you need to honor those orders or at least communicate professionally when something goes wrong. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Save yourself the frustration and spend your money somewhere that values its customers.

I'd describe it as "Central American"; Honduran, El Salvadoran, Costa Rican. But they have a lot of dishes one associates with Mexico: Gorditas, Tortas, Tacos, and Sopes. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but don't let that deter you. The food is muy sabroso, muy rico. The portions are very generous, and the prices are right on target. (I was also very pleased that the staff didn't embarrass me one tiny bit as I haltingly practiced my gringo Spanglish; they gently corrected me when I needed it, and they were happy to repeat themselves whenever I asked.) I've already forgotten about that other place a mile west. This is my new favorite "latin" restaurant when I'm in the RVA!

The staff were polite, but we had to ask several times to get items we were missing or things we wanted extras of. They checked in on us a fair number of times, but they still forgot to return to give us what we had asked for. By the time we were ready to leave, we still haven't gotten our dressings or our condiments. I also had asked for my burger to be well done, but I got a burger with quite a bit of pink in it. I didn't want to ask for it to be placed back on the grill because I didn't really want to wait longer for my food. Although I wanted my burger to be well done and I didn't get it that way, it was still pretty good. The fries though, I think was the best part of it. The fries were perfectly seasoned and crunchy! I also ordered a coke. Just a heads up, they don't do free refills on the sodas, so each cup is $4. My party also ordered salmon l'orange and a romano salad with salmon. My friends really enjoyed their main dishes, but we did ask for extra dressing. The restaurant is decorated in a boho-style vibe, and it was cute. We found the lighting on the side dining area to be a little bit too dim once the sun went down, but I do think it would've been perfect for a date night vibe. Overall, we had an okay experience.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Riverside Tavern on Forest Hill Avenue…read more I ordered the grilled salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus to go for $23.00. When I opened the container, I was shocked to find that the salmon portion was barely larger than my finger. It looked more like a sample than an entrée. I have attached photos because words alone don't adequately capture how small it was. What makes this even more frustrating is that I have ordered this exact meal before while dining in with my family, and the salmon portion I received then was easily three times larger. So this isn't a case of unrealistic expectations--I know what this dish normally looks like. I called the restaurant to express my concern, hoping they would make it right. Instead, the bartender responded with, "The portions are cut how they are cut," as if that somehow justified charging full price for such a tiny piece of fish. When I asked to speak with the owner, I was told, "You won't be talking to the owner. I'll just give him your information." There was no apology, no offer to replace the meal, no effort to address my concern--just complete indifference. If portions have been reduced, customers should be informed before paying premium prices. If this was simply an inconsistent serving, then quality control is seriously lacking. Either way, charging $23 for what amounts to a nugget of salmon is unacceptable. I used to enjoy Riverside Tavern and specifically ordered this meal because I had a good experience previously. Unfortunately, this visit--and especially the way my complaint was handled--has left me questioning whether I'll be back.
