Virginia Kitchen is our go-to breakfast spot whenever we're in the Herndon area. It's a classic fast-turn diner with generous portions, great service, and reasonable prices. I ordered the 8 oz. Angus Country Fried Steak Combo, which came with home fries, two eggs, and a biscuit. Everything was fantastic. The country fried steak was huge, and the biscuit was light, fluffy, and perfect for soaking up my over-medium eggs. My wife went with the Kashmir's Sterling Combo, which included golden-brown French toast, two eggs, hash browns, and bacon. The hash browns and bacon were both perfectly crispy. Jennifer was our server, and she was incredibly friendly. We hadn't visited in a while, and she filled us in on all the improvements since a car crashed into the building back in May 2025. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The renovations look great--the new flooring brightens up the dining room, and relocating the check-in counter has made the space feel much more open.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We arrived around 10 a.m. on a Wednesday, and it was pleasantly quiet. Our meals also came out very quickly. There were a couple of minor stumbles. Several of us ordered tea. The water came out lukewarm - the right temperature for drinking, but the water should have come out slightly warmer for steeping first. I ordered the Belgian waffle with berries - this should have come out with berries and whipped cream, but instead it came out with berries and syrup on the side. I mentioned this to the waiter, he apologized profusely, and within 60 seconds I have a large bowl of fresh whipped cream. I'm this area at least once a year, sometimes more. Tables are fairly close together, but if you don't mind being close to strangers you won't mind. Food was amazing. Everything was so good. I had a maple turkey bacon platter. 3 strips of bacon, eggs, hash browns and biscuit. You can also choose home fries instead of hash browns and toast or an English muffin instead of the biscuit. I was least impressed by the biscuit, you can tell they're home made, but they lack flavor, even with butter to me (I don't eat jelly often). Love...love...I love Waffle King's Virginia Kitchen. As soon as you step inside, you are warmly greeted and quickly seated. The staff is awesome. I have visited 3 times and no matte4 how tempted I am to try something different, I always go with, Grandpa's Breakfast, no eggs with a side of country sausage and coffee. Sausage gravy over the biscuit is delicious, I could down a bowl of the sausage gravy by itself and be a very happy camper. The accompanying potatoes are good coffee os ok but the huge piece of country sausage is super fantastic. It has the exact breakfast diner atmosphere I was looking for - classic, old-fashioned diner vibes. The service was very friendly, and there were a lot of regulars. My over easy eggs and sausage were very good. My toast was nothing to complain about. The hash browns were very okay. The classic waffle was disappointing... it was super thin and not very crispy, but the strawberries I ordered on top were good quality. We came here on a Saturday morning and we were able to get a table quickly. The service was attentive and fast. The food came out rapidly and that was the first sign of quality. This place is on the level of a Dennys, not just in the vibe but the food too. When the best thing is the toast then that is a problem. After finishing your food, you can get the check and pay up front. We were taking a flight out of Dulles and planned to leave our car at the Marriott Suites, so we picked Virginia Kitchen to try for lunch. We were very warmly greeted by Lincoln. He set the tone for a great experience - he was so welcoming and friendly. He took us to a table in the rear dining room. Maria was our server. She also was very friendly. We ordered two coffees, which were hot and delicious. My husband tried the daily special of chipped beef, hash browns, scrambled eggs, and a biscuit. I was delighted to see that they had Country Fried Steak on the menu. I had to try it. It was a generous portion of Country Fried Steak with Country Gravy. I asked if the mashed potatoes were real and was told they were not. So, I ordered French fries and green beans. I really like the taste of steak and fries not so much the green beans. First time back since the start of COVID. In summary, it was a great experience. Many of the former staff are no longer here, but the new staff seems fine. The staff is cleaning tables between each seating of customers and all staff are wearing masks. I ordered Doris's Special (i.e., Virginia (salty) ham, eggs, hash browns, biscuit and a side of sausage gravy plus coffee). The ham was less salty than before COVID and they seem to have a new item to fry items in as it all tasted great and was less greasy than before. My wife had the Turkey Reuben and took half home as always. Only real difference was that we had to ask for the check this time and previously, the check was always brought with the food. Not too shabby. While in the DC area, my brother and I were looking for a classic diner for breakfast, so we found Waffle King's Virginia Kitchen. We decided to give it a try, as we were craving a home-style, hearty breakfast. Located in a business strip in Herndon, it was easy to find and parking was plenty. We were seated immediately and service throughout our entire time was efficient and friendly, just what you'd expect from a diner. I ordered the chicken fried steak plate, which came with two eggs to your liking, potatoes and a biscuit. The chicken fried steak was tender and a good portion, with just a pour of gravy, so it didn't smother the steak, like at other diners. Scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked, as they were slightly under-cooked, which is how I prefer my scrambled eggs. The potatoes were the best part of the plate though, as they were hand-cut and seasoned well with a hint of spice. Not like typical hashbrowns. Overall, this is a fine place for a classic breakfast, serving all the favorites and more. The place is spacious, so accommodates groups and was easy to get to, which isn't always the case around northern Virginia. Glad to have checked it out. read more

Several years ago, before I became a big shot on here, I wrote a piece on Yelp called, "The Ten Commandments of Diners". Now some of you may have read it, and some of you may have not, but the general idea of the piece was aimed at an audience that might have been ordering the wrong kind of food at diners. One of my commandments was specifically, "Thou shalt not order anything that takes more than ordinary effort to make." Which is what I did here. I also wrote, "When in doubt, thou shalt have a breakfast menu." which this diner does. In my opinion, if you are ever unsure about what to order at a diner, stick to the breakfast menu. While you can easily screw up chicken, or a burger, it is harder to screw up eggs, waffles, French toast, and pancakes. Not to mention the prices are generally lower and you tend to get better deals. Anyway enough of my rambling. I got there and had the Annette's Combination. As you can see in my photo it comes with a lot of food! Eggs, a waffle, hash browns, and two pieces of Canadian bacon. All of it was about $10, but then I got a small cranberry juice which was a big mistake. Too expensive, too sweet, and too small. The food itself is what I expected, that "greasy spoon" flash in the pan taste that makes you wake up on an early Saturday morning. I should have asked for another waffle, but that is for another visit. You are not going to be blown away here, but as long as you do not order anything out of the ordinary, you will be fine. We were dying to try this place and finally had the chance this morning! The BF ordered the country boy platter and enjoyed it. I got the Belgian waffle with strawberries, and a side of hash browns. Sadly, my waffle was rubbery and dry, and nearly impossible to cut through. The menu indicated it would come with whipped cream, which was not included in our to go order. Luckily we had butter in our hotel room from the day before, so added some of that to try and counteract the dryness. The strawberries were not fresh, just droopy and sad looking. Super disappointing as the waffle was a struggle to eat, I ended up tossing most of it (and I hate wasting food). The hash browns and home fries were ok, but underseasoned. I guess the key here is to skip the waffles and maybe opt for one of the egg and meat plates? Or just skip this place entirely. Will definitely give it a pass in the future. read more

Most of us wanted to go somewhere else, but my boss insisted we try this "gem of a place" and I'm not sure if he was being serious or funny (now that we've eaten here). They sat us right away, a rather large party and our drinks came out quickly. My boss' cup was cracked, the OJ was incredibly watered down and even his milk glass was chipped...the server took the OJ back and said that it was from concentrate and the machine might have been messed up...but no comment/correction for the chipped milk cup?! I don't get it. The food was not good...I wouldn't say terrible because breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, but I opted for the biscuit (if you can call it that, it was a square flour-y item) with my country fried steak...and was soooo dissapointed. This place seems divey and I thought for sure the food would be great! The country fried steak was bland, had no flavor and even with hot sauce needed something else. My over-medium requested eggs came out over easy (extremely runny) and I had home fries, onions and peppers also on my plate (none of which I ordered, I suspect it came from being cooked closely with another person's breakfast). The food prices were average for a breakfast place, but definitely not worth the food that I ordered. If you're in the area looking for a breakfast joint...better off trying something else.
