Had a great time having lunch here the other day. It was a rainy day and we had our dog with us so we decided to come to Faneuil Hall and were positively surprised that Wagamama was also dog-friendly. They were very sweet with our girl and immediately brought her a water bowl. I wasn't hungry enough for ramen (which is usually my go-to) so I finally got to try some other menu items: the miso sweet potato bao buns, bang bang cauliflower and edamame. Wagamama in the UK is a guilty pleasure for me! We don't have many of them in the US, so we were excited to try this one in Boston. After finding a spot we liked, a server came over to us to say they'd be taking care of us. We placed our order of Edamame (with sea salt), Bang Bang Cauliflower, and two Yasai Katsu Curries. They said, "I'm sensing a vegan vibe, but unfortunately the Yasai Katsu dish isn't vegan." I pointed at the menu where it said it was vegan (the big green VG symbol). They said, "Oh, I've never seen that before. I'll have to check with the kitchen, because our katsu isn't vegan, so you'll probably want to order Avant Gard'n instead. Should I put that order in or should I check with the kitchen?" We had them check with the kitchen. Many, many, many moments later they came back to say, "I guess it is vegan. Did you still want that?" And then we never that server again. Our order was brought out sporadically by random other people who never spoke to us; they just dropped things off and walked away (except for the person who tried to tell us we definitely ordered the chicken dumplings and was so confused when we tried to tell them we definitely had not). + The Edamame was great; how can you go wrong with this salty little snack?! +/- The Bang Bang Cauliflower was good; wish there had been a few more bite-sized pieces of cauliflower instead of the little crumbles. Loved all the chilies on top and the fiery sauce at the bottom that could drizzle on our katsu! +/- The Yasai Katsu was okay; it was four disks of sweet potato and eggplant (a bit soggy), the famous Wagamama sauce which is always lovely, and a good little salad. It doesn't compare to the Vegatsu though! Also... why are there no spicy options here? - The drinks were terrible; both the Dark & Stormy cocktail and the Arnold Palmer tasted the same - so, so, so acidic. TL;DR: if you love Wagagama in the UK, you probably won't here in the States (and if you don't love Wagagama here in the States, you probably would in the UK as it's a totally different experience). While the vibe is similar(ish), the menu is dramatically different offering less vegan/vegetarian options, less spicy options, and - in general - less options all around. Typically I don't preferentially dine at chain restaurants, but I do like new experiences, and I do like ramen, and I was in Boston for a conference with limited options within walking distance of my hotel, so we ventured over to wagamama for dinner. This was a good idea. Because: - Bang bang cauliflower: this stuff rocks. The crispy cauliflower definitely steals the show, but the supporting players of onions, scallions, chilis, and cilantro only serve to make it better. - Kare burosu ramen: the curry veggie broth has a kick and the spinach and carrots are fine. But the noodles. Oh the noodles. These udon noodles are unbelievably thick, which is a good thing. The chew, the texture - yes yes yes. The mushrooms are also cooked perfectly, and the shichimi-coated tofu adds just the right crisp. If I were to be nit-picky I would request a little more salt on the tofu and a little more depth to the broth, but overall a truly inspired dish. Pricing is what one would expect for downtown Boston, and the outdoor seating was perfect for a warm June evening. My first experience with Wagamama was over 20 years ago in London, and it was an amazing meal. I'm glad to say the tradition of great food continues at this location -- everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and just as satisfying as I remembered. It was a rainy Wednesday night, so the restaurant wasn't crowded. It didn't have the normal atmosphere. Our server was friendly but not very attentive. They never came back to check on us; I finished my sake and wanted another, but had to wave them down just to get the check. That definitely took away from the experience. I also really miss having chili oil and soy sauce available at the table. I understand not leaving condiments out post-COVID, but it would be nice if they at least asked or brought them out with the meal. I was actually in Boston last around the time I saw signs this place was coming so I kept it in mind, the next time I visited the city, I had to come here. Over a decade and one cruise with Toby later, I finally got the opportunity. It was well worth the wait. I'm not the biggest connoisseur of ramen, but I appreciate when the broth is flavorful, the noodles are plentiful, and the meats just fits right into the meal. The spicy pork version I had had all those components and more. I love the singular rainbow table and the location is quite perfect for tourists. While this is not my favorite ramen place in Boston, it's my favorite easily accessible one (aka not in Chinatown where there are fewer hotels). The ramen is great here - no doubt about it. Cute Asian fusion shop! When walking in we were seated immediately. Fun fact: they write down on your placemat what you are ordering. They also promote plant based eating which is a great option for vegetarians /vegans or anyone curious of plant based meals. To eat/drink we had the following: Lemon Ginger Tea: the little pot was enough to give you 2.5 cups of tea. The tea had hints of the lemon and ginger. Personally I hoped it would of been a little stronger of a taste but that's my preference. Bao: it was Korean bbq beef with red onion. Never tried Bao before- it is like a bread but feels like a cloud on the outside it's a little sweeter of a taste but not overpowering. The beef was tender and red onion paired very well with it. With adding cilantro made it the best ever. Pork Ramen: this was my husbands plate. He said it was very good. I did try the broth and it was very flavorful. I was a big fan of the spoon they give you (yes you actually use it when you eat the ramen) Chicken Pad Thai: so this is your standard pad Thai. I never knew this place existed despite the countless number of times I have visited the Boston area. If you are exploring Quincy market from the interior you will miss this place unless you walk around the perimeter. They are located in the same building as all the other vendors, just on the exterior portion. They have interior and exterior seating depending on your choice. The interior is primarily long tables where you can have large parties or they could sit two parties by each other, but they usually try to provide some room by only seating one part at the long tables. The tables can seat 8 family comfortably with bench style seats. They do allow sharing of meals and accommodate with additional bowls and plates. We were a party of 4 and we ordered 3 meals, one of which was shared. I ordered the Steak Bulgogi from the teppanyaki side of the menu. It's marinated sirloin steak and miso-fried baby eggplant, served on a bed of soba noodles, dressed in sesame and bulgogi sauce. It is finished with scallions, kimchi and half a tea-stained egg. This is one of their spicy dishes so if you can't handle spice, don't choose this. I love spice and it had a nice heat to it. The Kimchi was subtle, soba noodles nicely dressed, but the steak was a bit on the dry side and the sauce was minimal. I loved the dish, but it would have been a 5-star had the steak been cooked less and more of the bulgogi sauce included. My girlfriend and her kids ordered two bowls of the chicken gyoza ramen. It is chicken, or pork gyoza. chicken stock. noodles. shichimi. bok choy. chili. scallions. This is also a spicy dish as they add chilies and a chili sauce on the top to mix into the ramen. They loved it, but did say it certainly challenges their spicy tolerance especially the chilies. We enjoyed some of their Mint tea and one of their power juices, both of which hit the spot. They provide ice water as well. Overall, I was impressed with the professionalism of the staff, the quality of the food (minus a few things), but had a great experience that I would return to do this again. My friends didn't like Quincy Market very much, so we decided to check out this place. Since I already partially ate somewhere else, I didn't get much, but what I got was very impressive. The Bang Bang Cauliflower was spicy, crispy and delicious. The cauliflower melted in my mouth and had a generous amount of onion and ginger. The matcha cheesecake had a perfect balance between the green tea and cheesecake flavors and the punch of the ginger in the ice cream paired perfectly with it. I wish it was a bigger portion, though. This is for wagamama- Faneuil Hall in Boston. The food was good but the service was beyond terrible. Probably one of my worst service experiences ever. We had dinner there at 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 16th. Our server took the order and then her shift ended and left without letting us know she was handing over the shift. Totally understandable but nobody picked up the slack and we were basically left unattended to after then despite there being plenty of servers and restaurant not even half full! Nobody even brought us the water. Had to ask 4 times to get the water and then they brought room temperature water. The servers were milling around and talking right there next to us but no one asked if we needed anything or refilled the water. My wife had to give my Son her water. Random people as another reviewer pointed out dropped off food and not a single person smiled or smiled back. When I complained the horrible service at the end, the manager Alex instead of apologizing at the end instead seemed to be arguing that things were "not that bad." Also had his arms crossed when hearing my feedback. If the manager is that lacking in basic customer service, I guess you cannot expect any better from the attendants. Had a great experience at Wagamama! Went on a Friday night with reservations for 7:45pm. Parked at a nearby parking garage and walked over. We sat indoors because it was a bit too chilly for night time outdoor seating, though it was available. We were promptly seated and attended to for drinks and appetizers. We ordered a few shareable plates, starting with Chili Calamari, then Korean BBQ and Red Onion Bao buns, and finally Tokyo Fries. The service was very well paced with each plate coming out after the other was finished. Service was fast but not rushed and accurate. The chili calamari was very well spiced and flavorful, delicate and crunchy without being too breaded, and tender inside. The dipping sauce was also nice to compliment the dish without being too sweet or overpowering. It cut the fattiness of the fried calamari perfectly. Next, the Korean BBQ and red onion Bao Buns were so savory, sweet, and spicy. Truly a great balance of all the flavors you'd want. The beef was perfectly spicy, savory and tender, the red onion was sweet and caramelized, the bun was light as a cloud and perfect to deliver the bite. Finally, the Tokyo Fries were also a delight. The bed of fried shredded sweet potatoes is something I personally haven't had and it was the best version of sweet potatoes I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Nothing boring or soggy about them!! Perfectly crunchy, and enough to balance the delicious meat, onion, sauces and herbs on top. They were generous with the sweet potatoes and the toppings were the perfect amount to share and balance with the fries. Overall the food was fresh, fast, shareable, and delicious. The ambience was nice. 4 stars instead of 5 only because my choices were on the more rich and fried side, so all together the meal was less balanced but this was entirely my choice.
