I have been eating at Wah-Kue's since I was a little girl - over 69 years. Loved the food! However went there yesterday and the egg foo young was terrible. The gravy was changed and it was a thick orange sauce. Not a light chicken broth, sherry and soy sauce. Every thing else chow mein, pork fried rice and sweet and sour chicken was fantastic. To start off I was very scared to come here. I hadn't been in forever and wasn't sure of the new owners. This is legit old school American Chinese food. It seems to me that everyone that grew up eating here absolutely loves this place and the people they bring seem to hate it. Maybe they slipped something in our food? My grandma loved this place took us whenever she was in town. I now take my mom when I am in town. I love everything they have on the menu (except the egg rolls while monstrous in size I think mine were a little over cooked and didn't taste that great). It is expensive but most dishes you order are enough to feed 2 and still have left overs. I absolutely love the pork fried rice. Each meal that you order also comes with rice and they will be happy to substitute pork fried rice for the white rice that normally comes with it. Sometimes they forget to mention it so be sure to ask. The size of the dish makes it worth every penny. As for the service. Sometimes they hover and sometimes they don't It doesn't really bother me. How long you wait for your food depends on how busy they are but still worth the wait. Is it authentic? No clue, I'm a red blooded blue collar american. As for the lacquered fish on the walls, the "tired" gold wall paper and the cracked red vinyl booth? I love it... Adds character. I love that the decorations are unique and no place else will ever look like this. My family has been eating here for years since my grandmother owned a business in burien. good food before when I've ordered with my family but WTF is going on here right now? I recommended it for dinner tonight after seeing it on my grubhub and after ordering my bf noticed how many bad reviews there are..... when the order was ready My bf went in to get the food and told me the workers were yelling in an argument when he walked in. We got the food after an extra 5 minute wait and when we got home we are missing one of our sides and I'm pissed off this (and one other medium container) is what I spent $50 on tonight. These small containers are the smaller than my palm. What I did try was not very good and I haven't touched my food after the first few bites I tried when I got home 40 mins ago. OK, I know what Chinese food is and what Americanized Chinese food is. I've worked in two different Chinese places as a bartender and, even with what I know, I'm a sucker for that almond-fried chicken with the the salty gravy, the bright red sweet & sour, and breaded/fried everything. My gf and I had been to Wah Kue several times, though not in about 4 years, so we knew we were getting bad, but tasty, Chinese food. However, this time, was really fucking bad... The almond fried chicken managed to be both dry and greasy at the same time, the sweet & sour pork was overly chewy and was a weird brown color, and the Mongolian beef had this bizarre texture like it was fried fat and had a nasty flavor/aftertaste. The chicken fried rice was OK. Seriously, it was not only nasty, but overpriced, too. We'll never be back. read more

Let me start with saying that I am not very fond of Chinese food. For the same reason I don't like spaghetti. I have been forced to eat it too often growing up. With that, even I must say this place is pretty darn good. It's a bit on the expensive side, but I figure food is one of those places where it's OK to splurge once in a while. The last time I was there, the food was great. Especially the almond fried chicken. Oh yummy! Also, the little old lady who is there sometimes is the best. My mom mentioned once that I was the only person she knew who ate and LIKED fortune cookies. The lady told me to wait and brought me an entire small paper bag full of fortune cookies. Ok, my first complaint is that their food is RIDICULOUSLY overpriced for what it is. An order of fried rice and sweet and sour spare ribs comes out to about $40. I think the only reason that I keep coming back is because authentic or not, their fried rice is delicious. And I don't even like pork in general, but I always find myself craving their sweet & sour spareribs. I really don't care to try anything else. Also, you'd think that a place charging $16 for an order of fried rice would be able to afford a remodel or at least buy high chairs that don't make me fear for my child's safety. This place just plain makes me happy! My family has been going here since, well to be honest, before I was born. I remember being so small all I could see was the front glass case at the register full of all kinds of things, but my favorite was the Botan Rice Candy and I had to have a box every time we went there. Over the years we have always gone here for birthdays, graduations, it was a gathering place for our family. I have ALWAYS loved their food! For me, this was comfort food. When my husband moved to the area from The Bay Area I took him here a few times. He comes from a large Chinese family on his dad's side so I wanted his take. He was not really excited about it and so we stopped going there as much. I just didn't want to hear him say anything bad, so I quit suggesting it. Then about a year ago we came back and much to my surprise he really liked it! His mom moved here a few months ago and I had been thinking of suggesting we all go there. We did and I am so glad. She loved it and so did we! I have always thought their food was good, but we ate here a few nights ago and I have to say, it was some of the best food we have had in quite some time! So much so that we came back again tonight for the 2nd time in less than a week! We are hooked! Add to the delicious food that the place looks like it hasn't changed in 40-some years so it has a kitschy feel, but authentic, and the staff is so great! Since Johnny retired we always sit in Tim's section and he is always such a gracious host! I highly recommend the Chicken Subgum Chowmein (super fresh and full of crispy veggies), the bbq pork (you have to try not only the hot mustard but also the hot "ketchup"- it'll knock your socks off), and the sweet and sour pork. Their sweet and sour sauce is the best! It's brown and full of flavor! It's the same now as it was when I was a kid! I am giving this place a 3 because my husband and his family have been coming here for ages. They love it however I am not really fan of this place. They recently changed owners and have changed some of the recipes. I find the food here to be really bland and flavorless. Most of the deep fried dishes are really really greasy and dry. There was only 1 restroom so each sex has to use the same bathroom WTF!!! Also they had no hot water... Overall I would not ever step foot in this place if my husbands family didn't like it but they grew up eating at this place. Just gross!!! read more

The only flavor to their food is salt! Most of it looks like it comes from Costco. Their egg rolls used to be the size of a plate and now they can fit in a tea cup. Bar staff is slow to serve and is less than pleasant. Tables are sticky. Ventilation goes from hot as hell to Antarctica in a few minutes time. Food is stuck in the padding on the bar top. If it could be run as it was 3+ years ago, it may be rescued. Or, a visit from the health inspector. read more

I really can't stand this place but my grandparents (rest their souls) loved it and used to take us here. It's a lot like the area it's in: probably great 30 or 40 years ago but has gone way downhill since. Oy, where to start? old-school chinese-american restaurants are becoming a thing of the past and it's getting harder to find a good place when an old favorite closes down for good. there are 2 things i look for, does the place offer bacon fried rice, and how good is their almond fried chicken/egg foo yung gravy. wah kue has a decent bacon fried rice but i wish they included egg in it and cut back on the peas and carrots. their gravy is good but has just a bit too much 5-spice powder in it and maybe not enough oyster sauce. prices are high, but it is seattle so you have to expect that. read more

This Chinese restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite for over 60 years. My family and friends have gone here for years. The new owner has returned the menu and recipes to the original. We recently decided to give it another try. And all I can say, it is the best Chinese food around. The new owner has brought it back and done a fine job. You do not need a time machine. Just go to this place and you will be transported to a Chinese restaurant of the 1950's. The greasy food is the super-Americanized version of what white people think greasy Chinese food is. There are only a handful of places like this still in existence. for example, the chow mein is the gooey bean spout and celery version with the crispy fried chow main noodles you can find at Safeway. Do not get this for take out. since old school chinese is nearly all fried stuff with sayce, everything gets mushy on a drive home. This was a family favorite of my inlaws growing up 20 or 30 years ago but I have not been all that often since moving out. On a whim tried it out last night. Still have the old school no smoking signs and initially sat in a boot that cushion really needed to be replaced. The waiter was not that engaging at all, hard to hear what he was saying. On the positive the food was very good, although seemed a little pricey for me. Ordered the beef and brocolli, a number 1 and a number 2. Had many leftovers which is always a nice treat. read more
