Kauai Shrimp. Not normally a fan of shrimp with the full body, but this was exceptionally good.
    Jeff W.

Was able to get reservations here on a whim on a Saturday night in Waikiki. As a person who has been to Tokyo before, one of the great things about Waikiki is that you get a taste of the Japanese culture given the large Japanese influence and populous. Shokudo has a great Tokyo style vibe, and the food was on par with some of what you'd be able to get on the streets of Tokyo. The staff was welcoming and attentive. Perhaps the highlight for me was the Kauai shrimp. Forgot that Japanese cuisine usually includes the entire shrimp, which I'm not a fan of. However, the shrimp were excellent, and I enjoyed them immensely and was not bothered by the fact that it was the full body. Our son who is just exploring his food pallet thoroughly enjoyed trying everything we ordered. We definitely come back again next time we are in town.

This place was recommended by someone who is Japanese so I had a high expectations and they definitely met it. I felt like I was back home. I was so lucky to get there before it got busy and was able to sit at the counter. Everything my friend and I ordered were great! The server at the counter was so sweet and pleasant. Their happy hour menu is good value for sure.

Yakisoba and Jidori Chicken (with salt)
    Allie N.

Was looking for dinner in Waikiki and was mesmerized by the photos of the yakisoba here so came to try it. The entrance to the restaurant starts with stairs so be forewarned that this place does not have a handicap entrance. Once I reached the top of the stairs, I was quickly greeted by staff during a busy and bustling night and was quickly seated at the bar. I started with the lychee martini which I ended up not liking as it tasted more like yuzu. For food, I ended up ordering a variety of dishes. I had ordered the Miso black cod, Hamachi carpaccio, Agedashi tofu, jidori chicken, and Yakisoba. The best dish out of it all was the jidori chicken. As simple as it sounds, order it with salt because the yuzu pepper paste it comes with is phenomenal. The Hamachi was incredibly fresh from the carpaccio. Everything else tasted pretty standard. The tofu needed grated ginger and daikon, which I normally find that they include at other restaurants. Yakisoba was fire and really a good amount for two people If sharing a bunch of dishes here. Even though this place stays open late, I found service to be lacking. After ordering, it was kind of rare to see my server pop-up. Even when people would leave, tables or places at the bar would have dirty dishes on it for a while. At times, even my dishes weren't taken away, so I would just stack them on top of the other dirty dishes next to me. The next time I had seen my waiter was when they were making drinks for other tables or when they gave me the check. It was only then that I was able to tell him that I had never gotten my black miso cod. Overall, would come back and hope for the best from service.

This place is such a hidden gem. The food was fantastic and the prices are great. We ordered 8 dishes and it was only $80. This is considered a steal coming from the Bay Area. The butterfish, ahi katsu, and the pork belly were my faves. The Yakisoba was also a highlight. I will definitely be back again. The service was also so fast.

Happy hour date night. Made reservations on OpenTable and parked a block over at the Hyatt Centric. Ordered from both the HH menu and the regular menu. Great flavors and attentive server. We were one of the first to arrive, and the staff was ready. Definitely adding this to the rotation for HH. Under $100 for 7 plates and 3 drinks.

We went to Waikiki Shokudo for a date night and absolutely loved it! The interior of the restaurant is modern with dim lighting inside and we had a table right by a window. We ordered a variety of things such as Agedashi tofu, chicken karaage, the mermaid roll and yakisoba. Everything was quite delicious! My boyfriend's favorite was the mermaid roll and I really enjoyed the Agedashi tofu and chicken karaage. The yakisoba had the right amount of sauce and we also got the chicken karaage at a happy hour price! For dessert we got the honey toast and that day's flavors were strawberry and vanilla. A classic Shokudo dessert that you can't go wrong with! Service was good and food came out pretty fast. Since it's in Waikiki, parking can be tough but we parked nearby at the Royal Hawaiian Center since we planned to walk around there afterwards.

Enjoyed some small bites in a relaxed izakaya-style setting on a Thursday night. Wasn't bush so service was fast and it was relatively quiet inside. Everything we ordered hit the mark. Only downside is I wish the portions were a bit bigger, because it was all so good. Perfect for a lowkey night out though. Definitely recommend checking it out!

In the heart of Waikiki and with parking ramps nearby, it is a must-try for Izakaya. The restaurant layout and design immediately makes you believe you have transported to Japan. Lots of seating areas make for quick service. The server was very patient and explained how their menu works, recommendations, and even mixing the rice for us! We went looking for good Yakisoba, which we found, but left craving more of the garlic pepper rice, which was a very pleasant surprise! The plates are served family style, which allows you to try a little bit of everything. For the location, I found it to be fairly reasonably priced, with an exceptionally high-quality of food.

celebrated a friend's birthday this past weekend at one of her favorite restaurants, Waikiki Shokudo! this was actually my first time. ive only been to the old kapiolani and the kaimuki location. everything was delicious and their cocktails are simple but very tasty. my favorite thing on the menu was the mentai mochi cheese, but i forgot to take a pic of it cause it was so damn good (oops). this was also the biggest honey toast ive ever seen in my lifeeee. so yum would definitely come back!! follow my foodie ig page: smolgirlfatass

Honey Toast (best dessert ever!) - VN

We ate at their Ala Moana area location years ago and really enjoyed it. I was happy to see that this location was close to our hotel (Lay Low) and was open late (till 1am). ATMOSPHERE: Located on the second floor of a multi-tenant building, the cozy izakaya has no decor, warm lighting and can get a bit loud. Seating is spacious along with a bar setup. RESERVATIONS: I made them on OpenTable for 9:30pm on a Friday night, which was a good decision as they were pretty busy even at that late hour. PARKING: Street or in nearby garages. MENU: They were out of several items and still had 3.5 hours till closing. Strong list of Japanese apps, handful of sushi styles, stir fried, grilled and rice dishes. Definitely get their infamous Honey Toast for dessert. BEVERAGE: Sake Lychee-tini Perfectly sweet with bold lychee flavor. FOOD: Tako Karaage Ugh, sold out! Tataki Cucumber Refreshing & crunchy, with savory sesame & bonito flavors. Highly recommended. Miso Butterfish Nice sized filet with not a single bone in it! Flaky, moist, and perfectly seasoned. Highly recommended. Shokudo Roll Thin ring of rice (a plus for me) with a trio of fresh fish, drizzled with a sweet and savory sauce. Highly recommended. Yakisoba They were out of pork, instead replaced with thin slices of beef. This was such an enjoyable dish! The chewy noodles and crunchy veggies were stir fried in a tasty seasoning and sat on a thin layer of scrambled egg (pics make the egg look like a pool of sauce). Highly recommended. Jidori Chicken We got it salted with the teriyaki sauce on the side. The chicken slices were juicy but unevenly seasoned and lacked texture from the grill. Still, a good dish. DESSERT: Honey Toast How can something so simple be so heavenly? Thick buttered and toasted Japanese white bread with a cubed out center, two scoops of vanilla ice cream sitting on top, all drizzled with honey. SERVICE: Host greeting was immediate and friendly. We arrived right on time and our table was ready. Male server was mainstream. Waters were constantly topped off. TIP: Maybe dine early to avoid dishes being sold out? OVERALL: Good food, fair pricing and open late.

Waikiki Shokudo is such a cute little izakaya! We ordered small bites: miso butterfish, motsuni, and the horumon stir fry. All of the dishes were great! The miso butterfish was buttery, fresh, and not fishy at all. The motsuni had a very nostalgic taste and the intestines in both this dish and the horumon stir fry were very well cleaned and not smelly at all. The horumon stir fry was by far our favorite dish. The slightly sweet marinade and the char were perfect touches. Unfortunately we waited a really long time for our dishes almost an hour and the server came around each table multiple times to apologize for the wait (I believe they only had one chef that night as the kitchen was open-facing), but the taste really made up for it.

This time back and our second trip was not as memorable as our first. The food didn't taste as well prepared as the first time. The Agedashi Tofu (3 pieces) was party cold, and only warm cause of the broth, but the sofa itself didn't have a good fry on it and it wasn't buttery smooth tofu inside Okinawa Sweet Potato Salad - we enjoyed this because of another yelp recommendation. It was served cold and tasted great with all the fixings on the perfect bite. Miso butter fish was easily delicious Mentai Mochi Cheese Gratin - I took one bite and couldn't eat this anymore. It was a textural thing for me that prevented me from enjoying it. The taste of warm mochi with melted cheese just wasn't for me. Shokudo Roll was one of my favorites of the night. But this place isn't for sushi as they only had 4-5 rolls as an option Hamachi Carpaccio was good but I felt like the presentation wasn't there, all the fish was buried under the mass amount of onions, and the pieces were uneven Gyutan - this beef tongue was what we were looking forward to most and it didn't deliver. It just wasn't as good as before Jidori Chicken with salt - we mainly got this for the baby but we had a piece and it just tasted like char chicken. Simple and basic. Not overly dry. We came early at 530pm, plenty of seats for a Saturday night but by the time we left, it was a full house. The servers were very attentive and friendly.

Had a great dinner at Waikiki Shokudo. We've been to their Kaimuki location before and enjoyed it as well. We happened to come during happy hour and were able to take advantage of some discounted appetizers. Everything we ordered was tasty and fresh. We, in particular, enjoyed the hamachi shiso roll and the cucumber appetizer. Service was very friendly and attentive.

"Jenny I've got your number...I need to make you mine...eight, six, seven, five, three oh nine..."…read morealthough this song and lyrics have nothing to do with 855 Aloha, that was the only thing upon my entry into this mysterious yet somehow still welcoming restaurant that kept playing over and over in my head. 855 Aloha is hip and trendy restaurant in the Waikīkī area of Honolulu that serves both the local community and tourists alike thanks to their buzzworthy mashup of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and European influenced cuisine that represents the Hawaiian islands rich cultural melting pot. Located on the ground floor of the Romer House hotel, which itself had been recently gutted and remodeled in recent years, along Nāhua Street, 855 Aloha proudly establishes itself as a restaurant that has its roots engrained with a sense of nostalgia from a time when things moved a little slower, even in Hawai'i where things have always moved a little slower, so diners can gather, stay a little longer, which upon my visit I happily did so. Named for Hawaii's once-ubiquitous payphone number, 855 Aloha is a celebration of local history and a bit of an homage to the humble payphone, where a handful of change could connect people back to the mainland. What brought me here was the fact that on a previous journey to the Hawaiian islands, I stayed at the Romer House and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but never got around to visiting their main restaurant on the ground floor lobby. Upon a recent visit to Waikīkī, with the rain coming down in droves, I made it my mission to finally make it one of Waikīkī's most intriguing restaurants. Not having reservations for 855 Aloha was not a problem, as I made sure to call in advance and they said they were taking walk-ins this evening. Being sat in one of their large booths made me appreciate solo dining, and take in the ambiance of a dimly lit dining room. Beyond the cocktail and beverage section of the menu, the dinner menu at 855 Aloha is separated into categories including Sushi Rolls, otherwise known as Roll Call; Salads, otherwise known as Fresh Talk; Shareable Pupus and Appetizers, otherwise known as Party Line; Large Plates, otherwise known as Main Line; Sides, otherwise known as What's Your Extension; and Desserts, otherwise known as Sweet Talk. To start my meal I ordered their Hello Goodbye cocktail which featured Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Honey and Lemon. A sultry cocktail that was deep in texture and flavor, this was a nice start to my meal. To eat with my cocktail, I ordered their Cali Roll which was filled with Snow Crab, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame. This was your traditional sushi roll elevated in an only-in-Hawaii sense of mind. Since I was famished for food, I knew I wanted something hearty, and their Chinatown Chili Crisp Chicken which was served with Gai Lan vegetables, as well as Charred Lemon, and topped with Cilantro. To pair with my entrée, I ordered their Furikake Rice. As I sipped on my cocktail I enjoyed my Cali Roll piece by piece and knew that the food at 855 Aloha was truly elevated and I knew for the rest of my evening I was in for a real treat. My chicken entrée and bowl of steamed rice topped with furikake seaweed and sesame seeds would come out next and I would not be disappointed as it was juicy and flavorful with every bite. The chicken entrée was not the largest dish so sharing this one entrée seems doubtful the side of steamed rice definitely fills up any diner. I didn't think I had any room for dessert but changed my mind when I reviewed their menu, and their Chocolate Haupia Pie topped with Toasted Coconut and Whipped Cream was simply too good to ignore. My total bill for this visit to 855 Aloha was $90.06 that included tax and was before grtuity was added in, which was higher than most, but well worth the price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 855 Aloha, as it represented the true diverse cultures of Hawaii, thanks to the energy and kindness of the Japanese hospitality that this restaurant represents. Seeing my fellow diners, both large parties and couples enjoy themselves, in such a place where people were clearly bonding over their meal and drinks in such a laid back yet still dynamic social environment was a real treat. "I got it, I got it, I got it...for a good time, for a good time call...855 Aloha!

As it was my first night in Hawaii and we didn't have dinner yet, sure why not try it? While waiting to be seated, I had asked the staff at 855 Aloha if the 15% discount would apply for guests at the hotel, and quite oddly, she said she didn't know. Upon being seated, I asked our server and strangely, she also didn't know and said she would ask someone. Sort of made me confused and gaslighted that I'm being told two different things. As it's our first time dining at 855 Ahola, we tried a few entrees and I would say that it's flavorful and delicious; much better than I would have expected. $12 for sparkling water, a little pricier but the food was good. I did enjoy my late meal / dinner. My only complaint would be that when the bill arrived, no discount was applied. I had told three servers that I was a guest at the hotel, had my key card and ID as well. The server came back and she applied 10% off. At that point, I just paid for the bill and left a 20% tip for gratuity. Being in Hawaii, especially after a long flight and it being our first meal which happens to be very late and it's dinner, would have liked for the hotel to have just honored the 15% discount without having to ask about it so many times. 15% discount won't break my wallet but it's more about the principle and fairness -- it is actually listed on the website as well. It made me feel like 855 Aloha wasn't very honest. The food itself was good but I would probably just skip this one next time.

We ordered a bit too much food and spent a little under $200 for two people after tax and tip. Some dishes we ordered: 1. Spicy tuna and salmon with garlic roll ($26.50) - massive roll and quite heavy...this was the last dish to come out and we were STUFFED by then. It's good, but I would have preferred to start the meal with this roll, not end with it. 2. Atsuage natto ($9.50) - ordered to hit my protein macros. It's literally fried tofu topped with a generous serving of natto. 3. Eggplant in dashi sauce ($6.50) - light appetizer, and seemed fairly healthy. 4. Miso chilean sea bass ($30) - very flaky and fresh. I was already getting full by this point after our apps and nigiri came out. 5. The nigiri and rolls were all fresh and ranged in pricing. We each got 3 pieces of nigiri and split a couple small rolls in addition to the aforementioned spicy tuna and salmon. Service was decent. We sat at the counter and the chefs were all very nice.

Best service, even when we showed up right before last call. Thank you!…read more Most places don't look too happy when you walk in right before last call. We are always looking for a quick night cap after UH games and Bozu has both good drinks and quality sushi and sashimi.
