What a DELIGHT! After a weekend staycation in the KC Arts District, my wife and I decided to enjoy breakfast before heading back to the routines of home. We had some out of town friends who discovered this place (the location in Lee's Summit) on a recent visit to our area and they told us we simply had to check it out. Our mini-getaway seemed like the perfect time to do so. Walking through the door immediately takes you away from the present to a simple and slower place-- it almost feels like a trip to Andy Griffith's Mayberry. We were seated immediately,and our server introduced herself within minutes of our arrival. The menu held no surprises; it was exactly what you'd expect at this kind of restaurant... breakfast/lunch/burgers/pie... I ask our server about recommendations, and she gave us a couple minutes to make our choices. She came back moments later, bringing us some complimentary cinnamon rolls along with my coffee and my wife's hot tea. They were warm and delicious. When our meals arrived, they were perfect. The over medium eggs had bright runny yolks with completely cooked white. The biscuit was good (not exceptional) but the gravy was OUTSTANDING-- and I'm a bit of a "gravy snob." I enjoyed the bacon and my wife said her sausage patties were really tasty. There was also a waffle involved... Crispy and tender... May it Rest In Peace. Our mugs were never empty. The staff was pleasant and efficient. Even the other customers seemed happy to be there! We had unsolicited waves and smiles from children in 2 different family units during the duration of our visit. (Perhaps the fact that I look like Santa contributed to this, but still, it was so sweet!) We haven't visited the location in Lee's Summit, yet, but we will, and we'll be keeping The Neighborhood Cafe in the rotation for our Saturday morning Date Days! read more

We have eaten at neighbors in lees summit. We're you're greeted right away., asked how many and put on a list. We ate at waldo cafe..talk about some rude waitress! We waited a while until we were seated. When seated we waited a while..A man said "I'll bring cinnamon rolls. We waited started to leave and a waitress said "you're leaving? I can get your drinks, but I'm not your waitress!" Then a waitress came by and Saud "Sorry you had to wait a couple of minutes" She didn't see how long we waited. She was sarcastic and rude. Long story short: This diner-like restaurant is a neighborhood gem and my absolute favorite location for breakfast in the city of Kansas City. From the orange juice, to the omelettes to the oh-so-delicious, complimentary Cinnamon Rolls... this diner should deffo be on your bucket list! Long story long: This restaurant is nestled in the corner of Waldo Plaza, and starts serving customers as early as 6:00 AM. The menu is so extensive that there's honestly something for everyone (yes, that includes you vegetarians too!) My favorite thing about this restaurant is the cost-to-value ratio. You get a boatload of food for the price you pay, and you will most likely find yourself taking a box home. We went for lunch the other day. The service was great, our server was super friendly and very attentive! Also, the complimentary cinnamon rolls are the bomb. You should know that it's not like bread at other restaurants, you get one for each person for free and then pay for them after that. (This may be obvious to some, but I wanted to make it clear for anyone who might be confused.) I think the lunch/dinner food is a little overpriced for what you're getting. I had the chicken strips and fries, which were definitely under-seasoned and the fries were undercooked. We also waited a while for our food, but they were pretty busy at the time, so I understand the wait. Also, for anyone with sensory/noise issues, it can get a bit loud in there with people talking and some noise from the kitchen. It wasn't too bad, but I can see how it would be overstimulating. Customer service is terrible, food is below average and over priced. If I'm paying $5 for a small cup of oatmeal I'm expecting it to come with toppings, sugar, cinnamon or fruit. Instead I got a small cup of plain boiled oatmeal. The French toast was terrible. The hash browns was ok but who can mess up hash browns.... The atmosphere gives a "get out" feeling. I'm afraid management is slipping here... the staff certainly is! We've came in now three times in the past three weeks. Each time seems to be getting progressively worse. The hostess is horribly disorganized. She doesn't exactly greet you but rather just points to a table and says "I can put you there." - she doesn't even walk you to a table. Half the time people are forced to wait at the door while visibly open tables sit empty. After about five minutes of waiting the hostess drops off two cold and stale cinnamon rolls - old enough that they were pretty much inedible. We wait and wait and wait. I finally resort to asking a random employee for some water - she was kind enough to provide. We wait and wait and wait. Finally some lady shows up (I guess she was the waitress???) and abruptly asks "has someone taken care of you?"... uh, no. The obvious lack of coffee or food on the table could be a good indicator of that. She asked if we wanted anything to drink - we quickly interjected that we were ready to order. She hastily takes our order and leaves. 10 more minutes for coffee.... 30 more minutes before a "warmish" meal shows up. Mediocre would have been an improvement. I could go on about the multiple failures that seem to be happening with this place... overall, they seem to be slipping quickly... too bad, Waldo needed a good and reliable breakfast place. For now, we're going to decide to give them a break and see if they can figure out their shortcomings. read more

This place gets very busy around 11-noon so get there early if you don't want to wait to long. However, we didn't mind waiting plus the wait time went by really fast. I was craving chicken and waffles and this meal definitely satisfied my cravings. The waitress was also very prompt and accommodating. read more

Cute place and cute staff. I was bummed though because I read they had mimosas and they don't. I also asked for my hash browns to be crispy and they came back burnt and dry. And be sure to ask how much meat you get with the platters, because they definitely gave one sausage per customer. Always torn giving a hidden gem a great review, I mean as the Red Lion in Lawrence used to warn you, "Don't tell anyone about the Lion, the seat they take may be yours!" Neighborhood cafe is probably another example of a three star in giving four stars because as much as I want to find something a bit higher quality, they are reliable and priced right. I love breakfast burritos and the options for those in KC seem oddly limited. Outside of fast food breakfast and fuzzy's tacos this is the the only place I've found that has a good one. They serve it with gravy and I wish they'd add a breakfast salsa option instead when ordering for delivery. You get a ton of food at an average quality but a fantastic price. I honestly intend to go somewhere like the big biscuit or even ihop when I start to leave to get breakfast but usually end up here instead because of the price and how close it is. read more

The fact that they provide free cinnamon rolls almost makes me feel guilty for this review, but mediocre food, with hit or miss service, sticks with me a lot longer than their tasty, breakfast starter. It's not hard to cook eggs, but in the 10+ times I've been to NC they've struggled to make my eggs over easy - hard or broken yolks mean you're simply doing it wrong! Maybe scrambled eggs is their thing because the omelets are pretty damn good. If you're into the lighter side, they make a pretty nice oatmeal too that comes with toast for only $3.99! I've been on a quest to find the best biscuits & gravy in KC, and although I haven't found it yet, their take on the dish isn't too shabby (it should be noted they have tasty sausage patties as well). I haven't given up on this place yet, mostly because I'm cheap, love nearby breakfast places, and they offer a pretty decent Groupon deal, so there is that. I think if management gets more engaged to ensure better service and food quality, Neighborhood Cafe can be the great local diner we all want it to be. read more

Great food, great service and great value! A large group of us stopped in on a Saturday morning for breakfast. After pushing some tables together, we were promptly sat and served fresh cinnamon rolls right away. They weren't the prettiest I'd ever seen, but they were still warm and super sticky...so very good! The service was prompt, friendly and very accommodating to substitutions and odd requests. I had coffee and the Country Benedict-- biscuits topped with sausage patties, sunny side up eggs and sausage gravy with a side of fruit. It was VERY good! My son had a pancake that was huge and also very good. My husband had one of the skillets with eggs, meat, hash browns, cheese and gravy and a biscuit on the side...all of the portions were huge! Since my last visit was my third visit to Neighborhood Cafe, I obviously like the place enough to write a review. Let me just start by saying that this place is always packed when I go on a Saturday or Sunday any time between 9am-Noon. I feel like that comes with the territory for a good brunch establishment. Walked in to several groups of people waiting to be seated. However, the hostess said their was room at the bar if we were interested. For sure! The bar stools were decent and it meant I'd get my coffee that much quicker! I'm always impressed with the meal options. If I'm feeling a little more health conscious (Yes, I would like a 1/4 order of biscuits and gravy) or I just want to go all out with the greasiest, cheesiest possible - Neighborhood Cafe has plenty of options. Not to mention a complimentary cinnamon roll. Talk about a breakfast appetizer! Or even just breakfast! I've seen many people simply order a cup of coffee and get a cinnamon with it. Very underrated place for breakfast! Both the Waldo and Lee's Summit locations provide a great experience and the food is A1. Do not be overwhelmed with the wait time. It's worth the wait and 9/10 times they'll get you in quicker than what was said the wait time was. With every meal you get a cinnamon roll and no additional cost. They're is always warm and brought out before your meal is brought out. I did the country breakfast and it was more than enough food. The biscuits & gravy stole the show. Some of the best I've had! I wasn't impressed the first time but have them another chance. The one thing they had going for them want even right this time. The rolls tasted like they were left over from the day before and heated in the microwave. They had the odd chewiness that you get when microwaving bread. I ordered the corned beef scramble. The potatoes were horribly overcooked. Crunchy to the point I felt a tooth might break. I ate the eggs and corned beef, but the potatoes were inedible. The today with the dish was opposite, extremely undercooked, just earned bread. They did offer to rebook my meal. I didn't have time nor faith that it would be much better. The cook already felt it was except to put a bad dish up and the waitress felt ok bringing it to the table when it was obviously bad looking at it. They did give me 50% off, not sure the horrible food warranted any charge, but the effort was appreciated. There won't be a third try. Classic Midwest Diner Fun friendly service and consistently great breakfast and comfort food. They start out by comping everyone to a light fluffy delicious yeast sweet roll. Kitchen is very competent. I have never had an egg that was not exactly as requested. "Over easy" really is not easy to pull off, and this chef and line get it right every time. This morning I requested my American Fries be extra crispy, and the kitchen met my request and mmm, crunchy glory. Servers are always attentive and friendly; that just right attention to their patrons and you feel like part of the family. These are hard working people and deserve to be tipped well. Good service and friendly staff. I ordered a "cheese lovers omelet" and a biscuit. The biscuit was a bit dry but the omelet made up for it. Most likely one of the best omelets I've ever eaten. The only reason it isn't 5 stars is because our table was quite wobbly and it felt like we were eating breakfast on a boat. The staff were really nice and offered us a different table though. We are celebrating our 36th wedding anniversary & decided to come to Waldo Cafe for breakfast as we have many times before. Food & service is always great, however today, after the hostess, Dia seated us in a booth we asked to be seated near the window instead & she let us know we could sit there but our waitress, Robin, didn't like people being seated there. It was what we preferred & she obliged us. Dia took our drink order & Robin brought them to our table & asked if we were ready to order. We were not ready & Robin stated she'd be back in a minute. My husband needed some milk with his cinnamon roll & tried several times to get Robin's attention. He even put his hand up & she never came to our table. He did get Dia's attention who walked over to Robin who had been at another table for over 10 min, to let her know we were ready to order. She still didn't come, she kept talking to the same table. So i got up & asked Robin for some milk & she brought it right away. My husband was so upset with Robin & voiced it to Dia, who stated she would take our order & let the manager know what was going on. My husband was ready to leave but Dia & the manager convinced us to stay, which we did. Robin never came to our table to apologize but she kept looking at our table several times while waiting on other tables. Apparently Robin has been working here so long she doesn't think she should be accountable for her actions & arrogancy towards her customers. If we ever come back, we will make sure Dia or someone else waits on us. read more
