Wally's is such awesome comfort food. I love the roast beef and the soft, chewy rolls the sandwiches come on. The cheese fries are awesome - nothing is too greasy, and you only wait a couple minutes for fresh hot food. Three words my friends. Blue Plate Special. This place is a diamond in the rough. Tucked inside a busy office building I would never have imagined this simple cafe was a delicious gem. I will premise my review with saying I have only ordered the Blue Plate Special, because it is THAT good. The options are great and the prices are fitting. They do roast beef well, but they have a number of other options available making this cafe appeasing to many palates. Remember they do breakfast and lunch only, but its definitely worth swinging by during your break. They have seating inside, which is fairly limited given the demand. Never would have found this place without Yelp! It's hidden on the first floor of an office building. At 12:30 on a Saturday there was a pretty good crowd. The daily special was 2 roast beef sandwiches for $5.99, and that's what I ordered. My wife ordered a hamburger and said it was "above average." The roast beef dipped in au jus was good. The guy who took our order wasn't very friendly, but it was ok. Loved the feel of the place - throw back to an old diner. Even has a real jukebox. I thought about rating it a 4-star, but the truth is, it was fun to try something different, but I won't seek it out again. But don't let that stop you from trying it. Its worth a try, and if I lived in the area, it'd be a place I came to when in the right mood. read more

Walk into Wally's and you'll be transported back to the 60's and 70's. Part of an office building, Wally's is a little bit hard to see from the main street. Once you're there, you'll find a classic dinette decor with green and white colors. Staff is friendly and helpful, in a neighborly kind of way. Everyone comes here for the roast beef sandwiches, so that's what I got. Also decided to add some Swiss cheese and au jus. Got cheesy fries and an IBC root beer to go along with the lunch. While my order was almost instantaneous, it took just slightly longer for my friends' orders to come out. I'm assuming this is because my sandwich was already made, and someone before me decided to not want it anymore? Anyway, the sandwich itself was lukewarm-ish, and the cheese had signs that it had sat on the kitchen counter for a bit longer than "just ready". In any case, it tasted just fine, and paired up with the au jus, it was an old-school sandwich experience. The au jus was just salty enough but a bit lacking on depth of flavor. The fries were quite excellent. Overall, Wally's is a place where you go maybe once in a while to get that old-school beef sandwich kick. Damn this place is hard to find!! It's tucked away in an office building and kinda had a cafeteria feel to it. So everyone on Yelp said to try the Roast Beef sandwich, so I did.Its the namesake for crying out lout. SO, the best way I can describe it was like an Arby's sandwich but with real meat! The BBQ sauce and creamy horseradish condiments was eerily similar to Arby Sauce coincidence?!? You decide? I also ordered the daily special which was the pulled pork sandwich. This was a homerun!. Had the roast beef and cheddar au jus, potato cakes and an A&W...$6.86. Now the potato cakes aren't what I expected. They're those "hash brown" type potato patties; having said that, they were good. Crispy outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich was solid and tasty, the au jus had plenty of flavor and with the horse radish, it was a filling meal. Next time I'm having the Blue Plate special. With all of the raving reviews, I was expecting something more wow. I had thought the roast beef was going to be served warm, but as another poster mentioned, it was room temperature beef. Unfortunately, this made me question the meats safety somewhat, as I asked how it would be prepared. it was supposedly held "warm" and then sliced for service. I wished I had just brought it home so I could have microwaved it before I ate it. The roast beef itself was very good. The bun, swiss cheese, horseradish, and bbq sauce complemented it well. Located in the Southtown Office Building, this is a great neighborhood place. Hours are limited, but it has become my Saturday go to when running weekend errands. I recommend the roast beef sandwiches, but the turkey and the pork tenderloin are really good also. I asked if there was a lot of roast beef and he said Yes on the full..well half the sandwich had plenty of beef but the other half was pretty lame. The roast beef is real and had a good taste. It said 'open face' sandwich but this wasn't an open face and to be honest that white bread was pretty bad. My mouth tasted like glue. The mashed potatoes are real and the corn is good...but they dump a bunch of tasteless canned gravy over the whole thing. With a drink it cost 10 bucks. I'd steer clear of the blue plate but next time will opt for the 4 dollar roast beef sandwich. In order to have good food you need a good cook in the kitchen. I once worked at a hospital and there was a janitor there who did his job with unbelievable dedication and thoroughness. Very few noticed and he certainly wasn't promoted or celebrated - he just did a very simple job, incredibly well and it was inspiring. This is Wally's. Nothing pretentious, nothing extreme, nothing earth-shattering but everything very, very good, and pulled off flawlessly. You won't find any breast-fed, yoga farmed, freely messaged Kobe organic beef here - just very good beef and sides. GREAT roast beef sandwiches and great au jus. The fries I got sucked... but that isn't what I was there for and I probably wouldn't ever order them again... stick with chips. You have seriously got to stop by here though... the roast beef is that good, thin and tender, spiced correctly on the edges. The au jus is cery flavorful and complex in taste, not too salty and well balanced. The only tip I have is get those fries under control. Decided to stop in while me and my family were in the area.The inside of the restaurant looked very nice, in a classic diner kind of way. We didn't expect much when we walked in, but we walked out amazed with what excellent food we just had. I ordered a plain Roast Beef sandwich with a side of Au jus, and my mother and father ordered the blue plate special. At first bite I was blown away with how tender the roast beef was, like none I have ever tried before,also the spices they rub on the meat is an amazing flavor. My father and mother loved their blue plate special, It was kind of like a beef commercial, but better with the homemade mashed potatoes and tasty gravy.We were blown away and we will definitely be back for more. I work very close to Wally's, and have been meaning to stop there for several years. I finally made a trip there with my father last week. My dad and I both agreed: this is a nice restaurant with good food and decent prices, but it's not one that either of us would rave about or go to great lengths to go to again. The atmosphere is inviting and models the old-school diner, complete with green faux-leather seats. This is somewhat incongruous, as Wally's sits on the bottom floor of a low-rise corporate building. I never saw the original location, but understand they tried to emulate it here. Lunches are very busy; we arrived at 11:30 and were able to order right away, but within 10 minutes the line was back to the door. Our order-taker was friendly and efficient, and I think I paid somewhere on the order of $12 for my classic roast beef sandwich and cheese fries along with my dad's "Blue Plate Special" (half roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy). We got our water (in a plastic cup from a pitcher) and sat down and our food was brought to us within a few minutes. The service was speedy and done cheerfully! My roast beef sandwich had high-quality ingredients. You can see the roast-beef slicer in action behind the counter, so you know it's fresh. The beef was very tasty and served on a fresh and light bakery-type bun. I lathered it with Wally's horseradish sauce, which has a nice flavor without being overpowering. You will not be overwhelmed by the *amount* of roast beef on the sandwich; I honestly expected to have a little more meat on my sandwich, and other people I've talked with have said the same thing. I saw multiple other reviews online that raved about the cheese fries. I was not impressed. The fries themselves are pretty solid, although I would rank Culver's fries higher. The "cheesy" part is merely a side cup of liquefied cheese product that probably instantly increases your heart-attack risk 17%. The same "cheese" that you get on the packaged nachos-and-cheese at a ball field. Not worth it. My father enjoyed his roast beef, potatoes, and gravy, but shared the same basic sentiments as I: solid, enjoyable, quality, but not outstanding. The small storefront is packed with people waiting to get in and order one of their scrumptious roast beef sandwiches. I went on a Saturday morning and ordered their 2 RB sandwich special with the Au Jus sauce. The roast beef is sliced in front of you from a just out of the oven roast beef. It isn't the artificial, pre-packaged lunch meat, type of roast beef you would find at Arby's. So now I'm 0 for 2 with Yelpers in the Twin Cities. What a disappointment, really. There was a line out the door, so I was quite hopeful that the fare was going to be good. So after waiting about 10 minutes to order, I got the Blue Plate with the beef barley soup. Ordered, sat down and was served pretty quickly. Looked at the soup.... looked like a carrot and celery soup more than beef and barley. Spoon plunges in, large chunk of beef. Horribly dry and tough. Enough of that. Waste of $2.70 on that one. Open face sandwich is next. Lots of gravy and potatoes. Gravy was non-exciting, potatoes just OK. Beef was also dry and flavorless here too. I'd had enough.
