Best place for buying my 6pack veggies and milkweed for my Monarch butterfly friends. All 6packs are 4.99 and the selection is good. They have literally everything you could need as a gardener. I got great advice from a team member on my pest control issues and the recommended products worked great. Walter Anderson is a bit like my ex-girlfriend. I used to love them, they were fun and new, surrounded by a fence, but over time the they stopped trying, they let themselves go, got too expensive and ultimately left me infested with bugs. I used to frequent Walter Anderson for its selection especially when it comes to succulents. The variety justified the higher price. Over the last year the selection has decreased dramatically. More problematic is the quality of inventory. I purchased an overpriced agave that was completely infested with ants and mealy bugs, knowing that I could save the plant. I let the cashier know that the remaining agaves were also severely infested. I came in a few months later and saw the same agave and same mealy bugs. They are no longer a SUCCess, now they more or less suck. read more

I needed fencing to block my little blind monster from getting in the dirt on my patio. Because she is blind, she doesn't see a fence. She pushes and tests it like a friggin velociraptor until she finds a weakness. Anyway, the staff at Walter Anderson were exceptionally helpful. They have great variety of healthy indoor and outdoor plants The people their are very helpful in directing you or answering your questions regarding plants. After a long and exhausting search for juniper plants all over San Diego finally came across Andersen Nursery in Point Loma. They didn't have the Juniper plants I was looking However, Antonio told me he would reach out to other nurseries and try his best to find them. I am writing this review due to the improvements they have made in customer service over the past couple of years. They have always had an excellent plant selection, but their customer service was poor in the past, the place had the snobbish atmosphere catering to the rich people of Point Loma. Now, they have hired a more diverse and friendly staff, and so it is a pleasant experience to go here now. They are friendly and helpful to everyone. They have a good selection of drought tolerant plants, like different types of salvias. Plants are healthy, with strong root systems. The staff are knowledgable enough not to overwater plants. Good selection of seeds in Spring. The bulbs they carry are good quality. read more

We came here to learn how to start container gardening, because they were supposed to have helpful and knowledgeable staff. The first person we got was terrible. He answered all questions with the word "yeah," in a slow, surfer's drawl, regardless of whether they were yes-or-no questions. But then we found our way to Olivia's care. Olivia was incredibly knowledgeable and thorough, guiding us to the purchase of several appropriate citrus trees, helping us understand what we'd need to pot and plant them, and helping us acquire several other plants for our deck as well. On a return trip, we got another helpful person (alas, I didn't get her name) who helped us diagnose a series of minor ailments with our tree as well as learn how to plant wildflowers. It took a little while to understand the rhyme and reason of the place, but if you get the right person (ask for Olivia!) you'll be in good stead. read more

If you want a one stop shop nursery, this is the place to go. They have a lot of plants and supplies to choose from. Most noteworthy is their large selection of aquatic plants and variety of bamboos they offer. They also have a fair amount of bedding plants and sub-tropicals to choose from. They are an established nursery that has been around for quite some time. They even have their own newsletter filled with useful information. the newsletter has some good coupons. I have only been disappointed once by this place. I called them to see if they had a specific species of plant I wanted to purchase. The guy who answered didn't know what I was referring to and took down my number, but I never got a call back. I got better phone service from Armstrong Gardens. When I visited the nursery the following weekend, I found the species of plant I was looking for. I guess the worker that answer red my call was either a newbie or just plain lazy. They have another location in Poway. Prices are moderate. Parking is plentiful. read more

The behavior of the employees & the clear inability of management to navigate the premises for consumers during this time has ended my patronage to the San Diego city nursery. I was told a variety of shopping and purchasing procedures from different employees, making the purchasing process & the subsequent support of this local business impossible. The employees were rude, ill informed, and most had no idea how to go about purchasing plants from the outside & fertilizers & supplies from the inside. They seemed to want to go the extra mile to make me and other customers with the same questions and issues feel unimportant. My locally based businesses are now opting to support other local nurseries and business for gardening needs and would advise the same. I received a response from Kenneth A., and appreciate his response. As a thirty year veteran of an essential business and a professor of Education here in Southern California, I certainly understand how situations become confusing, especially with continued changes and re-adjustments we all must make in order to adapt and keep all stakeholders safe. I also understand the tireless commitment of employees who are also successfully adapting to ever changing rules, while at the same time, risk their/our safety to provide essential services. Perhaps a higher commitment to communication from all would be most beneficial. Thank you again Kenneth, and you were right about those other LOVELY garden centers. All I can say is wow!! I loved the selection here. They have a grand variety of outdoor and indoor plants. So many to choose from. Prices are super reasonable, especially for the area! Even the nicer pots weren't an arm and a leg like they typically are at other nurseries. I really enjoyed my time here, and even though I'm not from the area, I will make a trip back just for this place. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Flatout the best for hundreds of miles. these guys are consonant plant professionals with public customer service at their core. Got a weird sick yellow Branch or Leaf bring it in and let these guys tell you what's wrong. Probably needless to say this Nursery is an institution and has not just stood the test of time but Excel past all the chains and other weird little plant shops around the county. If you're looking to save money you better shop the garage sales or Craigslist or something but if you want a healthy plant everything you need to take care of it I would not recommend anywhere else.. period. I bought vegetables chain stores... but it seems like sometimes those plants come home with diseases already infected. The plants at Walter Anderson's have such high turnover there's two seem to be always fresh young veggies ready to slamming your garden's soily holes. Over the 30 years I've been going to Walter Andersen, I've discovered it wandering around their Garden any time of year is better than any park just go and enjoy the fragrant citrus trees blooming rub your hand through the mints and Savory herbs. All the best seeds from around the world suitable for California sale anyway. Lots of great local supplies for hummingbird feeding made by locals and hummingbird nesting! make sure to join their hedge fund Rewards program for some additional tax rebate savings... We ordered a tree yesterday from Walter Andersen. We have purchased from them many times, but this was the first time we ordered since Covid. Odd location in an industrial zone of San Diego, this nursery has a smaller selection but great prices. Many plants were retailing at about 50% less than competing nurseries such as Anderson's (confusing). This is really the only nursery I know of in this area of San Diego. I was mostly interested in desert plants, which is where their selection could really use some work. But even with their limited selection, there were still quite a bit of cool finds. Plus, the plants looked well taken care of. The staff were also friendly and willing to help. read more

I am a longtime customer, and have always been impressed with the quality of the plants and service at Walter Anderson Nursery. Today, for the first time, I took advantage of their call-in and pickup service. The representative on the phone was knowledgeable and helpful. Ordering was extremely easy, and my purchase was ready when I drove through the parking lot. As usual, everything was perfect. The plants are strong and healthy. I also needed pots and soil, and they stock everything I could think of (and at great prices, too). I can't wait to enjoy the fruits of my garden in the coming months! I do miss not being able to wander the nursery and enjoy the variety of offerings. I have always found the staff to be friendly, professional, and so helpful. I look forward to the days when we can all safely return to some semblance of normalcy. I've found so many wonderful plants at Walter Andersen! I really love this locations cacti and succulent selection. They always have some unique finds. Haven't found any house plants that were hard to find at this location, but they have a huge selection of classic house plants. They also have tons of herbs and vegetables, you can always call ahead to check for a specific vegetable or herb. read more

My husband and I recently moved to San Diego and realized there isn't as much greens compared to the East Coast. So we decided to have our own little garden of succulents for the time being (would eventually like to grow a garden filled with vegetables and a nectarine tree). So we were looking up nurseries to go to and we found this precious place. This place is simply amazing. They have so many different types of plants and the staff is helpful. One of the staff helped navigate around the area and pick out which products would be best to start a mini succulent garden. I'm not sure whether or not if the prices are good as this was our very first nursery we've been to.. We signed up for a membership here and will definitely be coming back to buy more plants, soil, rocks, pretty much everything! read more

I have been shopping at Walter Andersen for over 25 years. Today's experience was awful. The plants were limp and in need of water. Other plants did not look healthy. Did buy a few bedding plants and a house plant. When I watered the house plant a worm came out of the bottom of the pot. While I would expect this sort of thing from outside plants, not a house plant. Also could not get service. Was looking at other house plants, but got ignored from the sales person who was playing personal shopper for someone. When I asked her the price of a plant I was interested she said they were knew and she would have to look them up. Later she still hadn't looked them up. So we paid for what we had and left. Will probably never go back. While they have always been a bit higher, I felt like I got a quality product. That is no longer the case. There are closer nurseries to me that I will use. read more

James at Walter Anderson was a star - I came in with a cutting from a plant hoping to buy one. He knew at a glance that it was a Vitex, they had it in stock, that it would do well where we live, as he was familiar with our climate. I asked for 3 different plants, and they were all in stock. The customer service here is so wonderful, I really don't find that at any other nursery. There have been a couple times when getting a fruit tree and fruit tree not blooming I have take it back and they replace it, so I can be happy . They know how to treat old clients !! Great place to buy plants for outside yard/inside home! I love it that they have a lot of native plants and sell those for a great price. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly, feel free to ask them a lot of questions. We bought plants for outside: creeping sage hybrid, woolly blue curls and island snapdragon. Plants themselves were really healthy and showed little/no signs of diseases or lack of nourishment. This is now our go-to nursery! read more

From the staff getting a cart for me when my hands are full, to watching them help guide a customer out of the parking lot. The staff makes this place! Generally a much better experience than the big box store nurseries, though there's room for a lot of improvement: -it's often hard to find help - the pottery prices are way overpriced A staff member recommended a particular type of palm, which I asked if they had, and she said they hadn't seen it in stock for a couple of years. She then offered to "add my name to the book," which is a wish list of plants and customer names and contact information. I asked if this meant they'd be ordering said palms from a supplier, to which I was told their supplier of these palms was dead/out of business or something to that affect. So basically their solution wasn't to find a new supplier but to simply write my name in a book in case one magically appeared, and somehow remember to contact me. As luck would have it, I used the magic of Google and found another retailer in San Diego county who had a huge inventory and I was actually able to make a purchase. read more
