It's nice to know the food, environment, service and music are just as good if not better than 2019. I brought my family since they are visiting New York and they love it also. Sake from Brooklyn Kura, Seafood ceviche ramen, a speakeasy in the back? You couldn't really think up a restaurant more apt for my predilections. I started my meal with a quinoa salad and fried oysters. The salad was zesty, light and fresh. Fried oysters are hard to mess up, and these were just as good as I expected them to be. I love ceviche and I love ramen, but never thought to put the two together in one dish. I'm glad Wanpaku did. The medley of avocado, tuna, shrimp, onions, parsley and squid made for a most delicious summer meal. I was so pleasantly surprised to find they serve Brooklyn Kura, my favorite sake, made right here in Brooklyn. I have not been to their speakeasy the Hidden Pearl but my experience at the bright and airy Wanpaku space is a harbinger of good things to come for everything they do. read more

This is a cozy casual spot with attentive and unpretentious staff to match. It doesn't seem like it from the photo, but the fries were salted and rightly crispy (just the way I like it). The pairing of the potato bread with the buttermilk chicken made it tasty as well. I dined alone and was not rushed during a weekend visit (it was also one of the hottest days so that could be the reason why the place was not as filled). Tried their pork katsu over rice and squash croquette. Both were just okay (katsu texture + croquette flavor) so we'd recommend getting their sliced beef curry or ramen instead. I really like this place. We happened onto it by chance. Well, we opened Yelp and closed our eyes and picked, kinda, sorta. And it was exactly what we were looking for, a casual Asian fusion restaurant with a cool vibe and pretty delicious food that wasn't too filling and reasonably priced. To begin with, it's absolutely adorable. It's on the small size, but doesn't feel that way with it's open, spacious layout and quasi-family style seating. There's also a secret bar in the back that gives it a hip, and rather cutting edge vibe. It was almost like a speakeasy. Even though we don't drink, I gotta admit, my curiosity was piqued. I mean, who doesn't want to go to the hidden gem hidden deep inside the cute Asian eatery, right? The food was absolutely delish. We started with the karaage appetizer, which is tender chicken fried. Yummy. Then I had the seared tuna, which was so good. Jayson had something (see photo) that neither of us can remember the name of, or can find on the menu. But it wasn't particularly good. We think it was some vegetarian thing. But, of the four balls, we had one and a half. It was blah. Still, everything else was great. And the service was delightful and attentive. It's sad to say when coming back to Wanpaku we were really unhappy with our food. We are still unsure why the food here is lukewarm. We had ordered the 20 dollar ramen and the meat in this dish was super rubbery and inedible. It seemed it was more of a roast beef. It was cold, and old tasting. It had a layer of cold fat on the top of the soup that was unappetizing. We also ordered the beef short rib ramen. The short rib itself was amazing but the ramen and soup was unpleasant. Again, the soup was lukewarm and it felt like two different dishes that didn't work well together. We also ordered two pork buns that were just okay. They were basic and nothing really special. Overall, after a second try with no real improvement in food quality we will not return. read more

Another covid-era delivery review... I've lived in NYC long enough to know that ramen is kind of a thing here. I'm not sure I've had a bad bowl to be honest. That said, I'm probably a bit jaded and so all of these ramen spots are probably deserving of 5-stars. Solid ramen. The BBQ beef rib ramen bowl felt fusion-y, but was tasty and pretty good value bowl for the amount of food there was in it. There's actually a lot of noodles in it for one person, and I had trouble finishing the bowl (but that's a good thing if you come hungry!). However, other than the presentation of the large beef rib bone in it, I didn't find the dish very memorable. Towards the back of the restaurant there's a cocktail bar called the Hidden Pearl. It was a cloudy cozy day in the city today, so of course: a day for ramen. I've eaten ramen like 3 times in my lifetime including this time, so by no means am I an expert, and clearly a newbie to the game. HOWEVER, I am SOOO glad we came here today. The Spicy Karaage? I saw it on someone else's table and the second I sat down and they dropped the water, I ordered it to start. The chicken was perfectly cooked. It is a Japanese fried chicken with Wanpaku homemade spicy sauce, scallions, and dried chili. The sauce was not too spicy, but spicy enough. SO FLAVORFUL. I love a saucy wing/thigh/chicken. Super saucy. Like very. Not in an overwhelming way though. 10/10 As for Ramen, I got the Shoyu Ramen, which is chicken with marinated egg, arugula, scallions and bean sprouts. I added fried tofu and spicy chili oil. Wow. The other two times I got ramen, I couldn't finish it. At OTHER places, the broth was too bland and spicy, the noodles were too thick, or not enough noodle to topping ratio. HOWEVER HERE, perfect ratio, delicious broth, GOOD NOODS. Like the perfect noodles. I told the young woman serving us that I had an amazing time and clearly enjoyed it because I honestly never finish my food. This bowl was CLEAN. And its a healthy serving. I'm bloated as F writing this, but so worth it. 10/10 Next time (because there WILL) be a next time, definitely want to try a different ramen and try a drink. The bun was great too. Wanpaku is one of my go to ramen spots in north Brooklyn! Their chili chicken ramen is the perfect amount of spicy and will warm your soul. Although I've never been to the speakeasy in the back, I always order a lychee highball with my meal. The drink is light and delicious- even my friends who describe themselves as NOT whisky drinkers end up loving it. I recently visited for outdoor dining on a cold night and the staff was so attentive and accommodating. First time dining here but declaring one of my favorite ramen places in NY! We ordered the pork shoyu ramen and spicy miso ramen. Both very hearty with piping hot broths and topped with generous slabs of tender chashu. The soft boiled egg topping was cooked and marinated perfectly. Noodles were nice and chewy. We also ordered the Katsu Sando as an appetizer and the bread was nicely toasted and buttered with a thick crunchy layer of pork and lined with spicy mustard and katsu sauce. There's only three small tables for outdoor dining but the service was excellent! We were sitting at the end table without a heat lamp. The waitress was very attentive and offered us some complimentary tea. Without even asking, she already prepared a lid for me to take my highball cocktail to go. Updating the review again and hope anyone who order deliveries (especially via Postmates) can be aware of this issue. We ordered tsukemen, beef curry and karaage on Postmates because we really enjoyed our meal when dining in here last time. However, the soup for tsukemen was completely spilled and nothing was left in the bowl (see photos) - which was really sad for us because the soup was so delicious and it was why we ordered tsukemen. Unfortunately Postmates declined to offer any refund, and there's nothing we can do. This is definitely not Wanpaku's fault. But it would be great if the restaurant can offer more protection (such as changing the packaging, wrap the bowl with more layers etc) in the future. read more

The ramen here is delicious if youre a fan of clear broth. Their shoyu ramen is clean, rich, and salty. Personally I prefer tonkatsu broths more, but this is really delicious. We also got their tuna crispy rice which sounded like a great idea, but I wouldn't get again. The crispy rice is drowned in butter, and the bottom of the bowl is filled with oil. The tuna was okay, it didn't have much flavor. The sauce it came with was delicious but there was only a little bit. Overall I like the ramen but I wouldn't get the tuna again read more

Most great Ramen places are kind of dark and low key - so I was worried when we walked into Wanpaku - but I had no reason to worry! Went at lunch so it was mostly empty, so the server was right there and super responsive. Had the shishito peppers and the tofu with Ikura and Uni to start. Both were real winners. The waiter talked me into trying the beef rib ramen. It was delicious, but maybe a little hard to eat so next time I will try a different one. My friend had vegetarian ramen and she was really happy as well. Enjoyed both the food and drink. Got the vegetarian butter miso ramen. It wasn't spicy enough for my liking and doesn't include a ramen egg so I got a side of chili oil and an egg. With those two additions it was genuinely one of the best vegetarian ramens I've had. Veg ramen broth is often thin and bland but the addition of the butter definitely helped, as did the chili oil. The noodles had a great bouncy, chewy texture. I loved the toppings of tofu, corn, and scallion. The ramen egg was soft-boiled to the perfect gummy, jelly-ish consistency. I had the spicy tofu butter ramen and it was soooo good. I recommend the egg and black garlic oil add on! The noodles were not too soft with the perfect amount of chew and the broth is just perfect! A nouveau take on Japanese. Seating is benches but comfortable. This place is a drinking den as well as a a restaurant, and the layout and crowd reflect that. I found the service a little fussy -- my server couldn't help rearranging my dishes while I was eating which left me bemused. The dishes: Tezukuri Oshinoko was a variety of lightly pickled vegetables. Fresh tasty and delightful. The beef curry with pork katsu added... lovely rich and deep curry sauce. I was impressed by it so much it didn't register till nearly done that it wasn't spicy at all (which to me is required). I asked the staff afterwards about the lack of spiciness but I kept using the word "hot" which they kept confusing with temperature so -- don't expect spicy. But again the curry was so rich I barely cared. Finally the other server reeked of cigarettes. As an ex-smoker that's especially repugnant to me. So in closing: four stars as the food was excellent but dinged the one star on account of the fussy and tobacco-y service. read more

What a surprisingly delicious ramen spot! Everyone must order the spicy fried karaage, tender chicken fried perfectly then generously coated in a sweet and spicy sauce. On top of that, it was a healthy portion size. For ramen, the bbq beef rib is a must. Huge beef rib with meat, most places just give you a bone for decoration but not here. The broth was creamy in all the right ways. Next the noodles were cooked perfect and that's really important for a good ramen. For a small spot in greenpoint, they do it right here. Definitely come during happy hour to take advantage of the tasty highballs (about $6-$7) that come in flavors like ginger, lychee, and yuzu. They're very easy to drink (I had 3 of them over the course of a dinner) and the refreshing flavors nicely complimented the tapas I shared with my group. We shared the karaage and the squid tempura. Both of them were nicely breaded and had a tasty mayo-based sauce for dipping. However, the chicken karaage was a bit oily for my tastes, and the breading a bit aggressive. I had the BBQ Beef Ribs Ramen as my entree, and they were quite generous with the meat (good, considering the bowl is $20). It isn't a traditional bowl--the ribs are dressed in some BBQ sauce and the greens consist of arugula and bean sprouts. Despite the unconventional ingredients, I feel that the bowl is middle-of-the-road for ramen in NYC. Not bad, but not great. The back room is the speakeasy The Hidden Pearl. It was a nice space, with some ok-priced cocktails. I didn't get to try their special, the Kariyushi Club Cocktail, which is meant to be shared, but I would like to come back!
